Abstract:A simple approach was developed to synthesize carbon nanotube (CNT)-ZnO nanosphere heterostructures by chemical reaction of zinc chloride and triethanolamine at 90 degrees C using CNT as a matrix. The morphology and structure of the CNT-ZnO nanosphere heterostructures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The photoluminescence (PL) analysis of the CNT-ZnO nanosphere heterostructures exhibited a relatively decreased and broadened emission at 390 nm due to the charge transfer from ZnO nanospheres to CNT. Moreover, the CNT-ZnO nanosphere heterostructures were applied as ammonia gas sensors at room temperature, which exhibited promising performance due to their high surface-volume ratios and good conductivity of CNTs.

Abstract:Sensitive H-2 gas sensors are highly desirable for the prediction and early-warning of H-2 leakage. Low-dimensional nanostructures of metal oxide semiconductor emerge as promising materials candidates, but it remains a challenge to preserve the nanostructures in the real sensors. In this work, we demonstrated highly sensitive H-2 gas sensors based on porous network of SnO2 nanowires that exhibited ultrasmall diameter similar to 2 nm. Colloidal SnO2 nanowires synthesized via a solvothermal process were drop-coated onto the commercial alumina substrates, followed by in-situ annealing treatment at 350 degrees C to remove the surface ligands. The sensors exhibited sensitive response with linear dependence on the H-2 gas concentration ranging from 2 ppm to 100 ppm when operated at 250 degrees C. Typically, the sensor had a response of 13 toward 40 ppm of H-2, with the response and recovery time being 15 s and 31 s, respectively. To further improve the sensor performance, Palladium doped SnO2 nanowires were thoroughly investigated. It's shown that, the operating temperature of the sensor decreased from 250 degrees C to 150 degrees C after Pd doping, and the response and recovery time decreased to 6 s/3 s. The superb sensitivity was attributed to the enhanced gas reception, electron transport as well as utility factor owing to the network nanostructure of ultrathin SnO2 nanowires and catalytic activity of Pd, according to theoretical calculation and adsorption kinetics studies. Combined with the excellent solution processability, the colloidal SnO2 nanowires are potentially attractive for next-generation gas sensors with lower power consumption and integration with silicon-based substrates.

Gas Sensing Properties of ZnO Nanowires at Room Temperature

Abstract:We report the electrical properties of a gas sensor constructed from mats of ZnO nanowires grown on sap-phire substrate that shows a reversible response which is unique to CO exposure. The sensor is a two terminal design, where the terminals consist of two 25 µ m diameter gold wires laid parallel on the nanowire mat. The individual nanowires have an average diameter of 50 nm with lengths of about 10 µ m. The nanowire mat is about 20 µ m thick and extends over an area of about 1 cm 2 . When exposed to Ar, CO 2 or H 2 no signiﬁcant changes in the current-voltage behavior of the mat are observed. CO exposure results in approximately a three-fold increase in current. The response is reversible after evacuation. Typical currents when exposed to pure CO under room temperature without prior introduction to any other gas are in the range of 40 nA compared to non-exposed 15 nA. Growth technique of nanowires and comparative work will be discussed.

Abstract:In this work, sensors based on the ZnO nanowire arrays/CuO nanospheres heterostructure were prepared by using the simple low temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) were used to characterize the crystal phase, structure and surface morphology of the as-prepared samples, respectively. The sensing characteristics of the as prepared samples were systematically measured. Obviously, the sensors based on the ZnO/CuO heterostructure exhibited excellent sensor parameters than pure CuO nanospheres. The response value of the ZnO/CuO heterostructure sensor with the growth time of 5 h (ZC-2) to 100 ppm of ethanol gas is up to 55.4 at 122 °C, which is about 8.8 fold and 3.4 fold more than that of pure CuO nanospheres (R = 6.3) and ZnO nanowire arrays (R = 16.4), respectively. In addition, the ZC-2 sensor exhibits the excellent selectivity for ethanol compared to other test gases. Significant improvement of the gas sensing characteristics was related to the formation of n-p heterojunction. The prepared ZC-2 gas sensor exhibits broad application prospects in the detection of ethanol.

Abstract:In this study we report the enhancement of UV photodetection and wavelength tunable light induced NO gas sensing at room temperature using Au-ZnO nanocomposites synthesized by a simple photochemical process. Plasmonic Au-ZnO nanostructures with a size less than the incident wavelength have been found to exhibit a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) that leads to a strong absorption, scattering and local field enhancement. The photoresponse of Au-ZnO nanocomposite can be effectively enhanced by 80 times at 335 nm over control ZnO. We also demonstrated Au-ZnO nanocomposite's application to wavelength tunable gas sensor operating at room temperature. The sensing response of Au-ZnO nancomposite is enhanced both in UV and visible region, as compared to control ZnO. The sensitivity is observed to be higher in the visible region due to the LSPR effect of Au NPs. The selectivity is found to be higher for NO gas over CO and some other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with a minimum detection limit of 0.1 ppb for Au-ZnO sensor at 335 nm.

Abstract:A strategy for improving the sensitivity of a sensor for detecting CO and NH3 gases is presented herein. The gas sensor was fabricated from ZnO metal oxide semiconductor nanostructures grown via a vapor–liquid–solid process and decorated with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles via a sol–gel process. The response was enhanced by the formation of an α-Fe2O3/ZnO n–n heterojunction and the growth of thinner wires. ZnO nanowires were grown on indium–tin–oxide glass electrodes using Sn as a catalyst for growth instead of Au. The structure and elemental composition were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The gas sensing results indicate that the response value to 100 ppm CO was 18.8 at the optimum operating temperature of 300 °C.

High-performance gas sensor based on ZnO nanowires functionalized by Au nanoparticles

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanostructure has been widely used for gas sensor devices. In this work, a high performance gas sensor based on Au-functionalized ZnO nanorods was fabricated. Au nanoparticles were successfully immobilized onto the surface of ZnO nanorods to serve as a sensitizer by a facile solution reduction process. The hybrid Au/ZnO nanorods have been systematically characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM and optical absorption spectrum. Gas sensing tests reveal that the Au/ZnO sensor has remarkably enhanced performance compared to pure ZnO. It could detect ethanol gas in a wide concentration range with very high response, fast response–recovery time, good selectivity and stable repeatability. The possible sensing mechanism is discussed. The superior sensing features indicate the present Au/ZnO nanorods are promising for gas sensors.

Abstract:ZnO-based heterogenous nanostructures are considered as excellent active materials for fabricating highly sensitive and selective gas sensors. In this work, nanocomposite WS2/Au/ZnO nanorods were synthesized by covering WS2 thin coatings on the surface of ZnO nanorods and embedding Au nanoparticles between the WS2 coatings and the ZnO nanorods, and the light activated sensing performance of the sensor using the WS2/Au/ZnO nanorods as the sensing material was evaluated. With an average ZnO nanorod diameter of 60 nm, WS2 coating thickness of 10 nm, and Au nanoparticle diameter of 5 nm, the WS2/Au/ZnO nanorods present high photoactivity because of widened photoresponse region, increased light absorption, and quenched photoluminescence. The performance for sensing NO2 gas of the WS2/Au/ZnO nanorod-based sensor under 365, 455 or 655 nm light activation was compared with that of a bare ZnO nanorod-based sensor. The WS2/Au/ZnO nanorod-based sensor exhibits better sensing performance than the bare ZnO nanorod-based sensor under 365 or 455 light activation, with the response to 20 ppm NO2 of the former 40% higher than that of the latter. The improved sensing performance is attributed to the co-sensitization of semiconductors and metals.

Abstract:Light-driven technology had been explored to study high-performance CH4 sensing materials, which worked a low operating temperature at room temperature. Experiments were accomplished with facile solvothermal method. Noble metals silver was used to modify metal oxides (MOS) in order to effectively strength photoexcitation activity and improve gas-sensing performances. The impact of Ag nanoparticles on the morphology, microstructure, chemical valence, surface analysis and optical properties of the composites was investigated. It confirmed that pristine ZnO microspheres and Ag/ZnO microspheres with various silver concentration were favorably synthesized. Compared with pristine ZnO, Ag/ZnO nano-composites exhibit obvious visible light absorption and lower PL emission intensity under sunlight simulation. Particularly, the 1.5 at.% Ag/ZnO composites have reached a satisfactory response of 3.43, that is about 206% compared with pristine ZnO. The enhanced gas sensing mechanisms were discussed and illuminated. It serves some contributions to develop room-temperature methane sensors.

Abstract:A one-step microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthetic approach was used to synthesize CuPc-loaded ZnO nanorods. Several characterization techniques were applied to analyze the compositional, structural and morphological information of the products, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV vis spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Both pure ZnO and CuPc-loaded ZnO were characterized in terms of their gas sensing performances towards various gases under light illumination. The results indicated that CuPc/ZnO sensor delivers excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards ammonia, accompanied with rapid response/recovery rate, remarkable humidity resistance and a low detection limit down to 0.8 ppm at room temperature under red light illumination. This work will open-up new vistas in the development of room temperature gas sensors based on wide-band gap semiconductors with visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:A novel room-temperature (RT) resistive-type NO2 gas sensor was developed by utilizing ZnO nanowires as sensitive materials and metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (m-SWCNT) as electrodes where both of them were fabricated by spray deposition process. The ZnO/m-SWCNT sensing devices showed better sensing response to NO2, as compared to traditional ZnO/Au sensing devices, which possess opposite sensing response. This can be attributed to different Schottky junction barrier characteristics at ZnO/m-SWCNT interface. This work paves the way to explore effective sensing and electrodes for future novel NO2 gas sensors in practical and rigid gas sensing system applications. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:In this work, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors based on zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) decorated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) working under visible-light illumination with different wavelengths at room temperature are presented. The contribution of localized surface plasmon resonant (LSPR) by Au NPs attached to the ZnO NRs is demonstrated. According to our results, the presence of LSPR not only extends the functionality of ZnO NRs towards longer wavelengths (green light) but also increases the response at shorter wavelengths (blue light) by providing new inter-band gap energetic states. Finally, the sensing mechanism based on LSPR Au NPs is proposed.

Design of P–p Heterojunctions Based on CuO Decorated WS2 Nanosheets for Sensitive NH3 Gas Sensing at Room Temperature

Abstract:Tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets (NSs) have become a promising room-temperature gas sensor candidate due to their inherent high surface-to-volume ratio, tunable electrical properties, and high on-state current density. For further practical applications of WS2-based gas sensors, it is still necessary to overcome the insensitive response and incomplete recovery at room temperature. In this work, we controllably synthesized high-performance ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on CuO decorated WS2 NSs. The optimized p-p WS2/CuO heterojunctions improve the surface catalytic effect, thereby enhancing the gas-sensing performance. The pure WS2 NSs-based gas sensors showed a low response and an incomplete recovery in the case of NH3 sensing. After the functionalization of CuO nanoparticles, the WS2/CuO heterostructure-based gas sensor exhibits an improved response value of 40.5% to 5 ppm NH3 and full recoverability without any external assistance. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the adsorption of CuO for NH3 is much superior to WS2. The p-p heterojunctions strategy demonstrated in this work has great potential in the design of sensitive materials for gas sensors, and provides useful guidance for enhancing the room-temperature sensitivity and recoverability.
High-Performance Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Au-Loaded SnO2 Nanowires under UV Light Activation

Abstract:Optical excitation is widely acknowledged as one of the most effective means of balancing sensor responses and response/recovery properties at room temperature (RT, 25 °C). Moreover, noble metals have been proven to be suitable as photosensitizers for optical excitation. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) determines the liberalization of quasi-free electrons in noble metals under light irradiation, and numerous injected electrons in semiconductors will greatly promote the generation of chemisorbed oxygen, thus elevating the sensor response. In this study, pure SnO2 and Au/SnO2 nanowires (NWs) were successfully synthesized through the electrospinning method and validated using XRD, EDS, HRTEM, and XPS. Although a Schottky barrier led to a much higher initial resistance of the Au/SnO2 composite compared with pure SnO2 at RT in the dark, the photoinduced resistance of the Au/SnO2 composite became lower than that of pure SnO2 under UV irradiation with the same intensity, which confirmed the effect of LSPR. Furthermore, when used as sensing materials, a detailed comparison between the sensing properties of pure SnO2 and Au/SnO2 composite toward NO2 in the dark and under UV irradiation highlighted the crucial role of the LSPR effects. In particular, the response of Au/SnO2 NWs toward 5 ppm NO2 could reach 65 at RT under UV irradiation, and the response/recovery time was only 82/42 s, which far exceeded those under Au modification-only or optical excitation-only. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism corresponding to the change in sensor performance in each case was systematically proposed.

Abstract:Au-loaded ZnO were successfully prepared by means of seed-assisted solvothermal methods. The vertically ordered nanorod arrays are uniformly grown on the Al2O3 substrate. The sensing properties of ZnO and Au-loaded ZnO sensors toward HCHO were investigated. Remarkably, the sensor based on 4 wt%Au-loaded ZnO nanorod arrays exhibits high response, short response and recover times, excellent selectivity, as well as low HCHO detection limit at 70 degrees C. After the incorporation of Au nanoparticle, the detection limit decreases from 10 ppm to 0.25 ppm, and the response increases more than 20 times under 100 ppm HCHO at 70 degrees C. Moreover, the mechanism of HCHO sensing with Au-loaded ZnO was explored by the calculations obtained from the first-principle studies.

Abstract:Highly sensitive room temperature gas sensors consisting of ultraporous ZnO nanoparticle networks decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by nanoparticle aerosol self-assembly and sequential sputtering. Optimization of the AgNPs loading and the thickness of ultraporous ZnO networks lead to a sensor response, defined as the ratio of resistance change, of 1.8 and 7.4 at 0.1 and 1 ppm ethanol concentrations, respectively, at room temperature under light irradiation. This is similar to 10 times higher than that of pure ultraporous ZnO film under the same experimental conditions. Furthermore, the optimal AgNPs-decorated ultraporous ZnO films can detect as low as 5 ppb of ethanol gas at room temperature under light illumination. The high sensitivity of AgNPs-decorated ZnO film can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the ultraporous nanoparticle network morphology, AgNPs sensitization and light-assisted photo-excited gas-sensing process. These provide directions for the design of high sensitive metal-oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors capable to operate at room temperature.
Cu2O induced Au nanochains for highly sensitive dual-mode detection of hydrogen sulfide

Abstract:Colorimetric and chemoresistive gas sensing methods have aroused great interest in H2S monitoring due to their unique merits of naked-eye readout, and highly sensitive and rapid detection. However, combining these two methods for gas detection, especially utilizing one material as their common sensing material is a grand challenge because they are inconsistent in sensing mechanism. Taking advantage of the strong chemical affinity of Cu2O for H2S and the excellent performance of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au nanoparticles (NPs) in the visible regions and its ability as a noble metal to enhance gas sensing property, the Cu2O-Au nanochains (NCs) were prepared for dual-mode detection of H2S gas. The Cu2O-Au chemoresistive gas sensor shows a 5-fold higher response than Cu2O sensor at room temperature with a low detection limit of 10 ppb. Such good performance is attributed to the spillover effect and catalytic activity of Au NPs, and the enhanced H2S adsorption after Au loading as revealed by density functional theory calculation. Test strips containing Cu2O-Au produced for gaseous H2S detection show superior color gradient changes (blue, yellow, and brown). Finally, the practicability of the method was validated by real-time monitoring H2S released from cell culture.

Abstract:In this paper, using RF magnetron sputtering, we first demonstrate a UV-light enhanced high sensitive hydrogen sensor based on spherical Au nanoparticles on ZnO nano-structured thin films. The response of the sensor is highly dependent on UV light illumination. In the sensor, nano-structured thin films of Au/ZnO have been synthesized by RF magnetron sputtering on pre-interdigitated alumina substrates. The spherical Au nanoparticles have been successfully formed on the surface of the ZnO film by varying/controlling the post-annealing temperature (600 degrees C) and environment (N-2). The thin films have been systematically characterized by XRD, SEM, Raman, and XPS. As revealed by the Hydrogen gas sensing results, the N-2 post-annealed Au/ZnO thin film sensor has remarkably enhanced the sensing performance under UV light illumination of about 172% at 1000 ppm of H-2 concentration-two, times higher than when it was without UV light (80%). The gas sensor under UV light lowers the gas detection limit to 50 ppm from 100 ppm (without UV light). We discuss the detailed mechanism of the gas sensor under dark and UV light with the help of different theoretical models such as spillover and band bending mechanism. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V.
