Abstract:Here, porous grapheme oxide (GO) gel deposited on nickel foam was prepared by using polystyrene (PS) colloidal particles as spacers for use as electrodes in high rate supercapacitors, then reduced by Vitamin C aqueous solution in ambient condition. The PS particles were surrounded by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets, forming crinkles and rough textures. When PS particles were selectively removed, rGO gel coated on the skeleton of Ni foam can formed an open porous structure, which prevents elf aggregation and restacking of graphene sheets. The porous rGO-based supercapacitors exhibit excellent electrochemical performances such as a specific capacitance of 152 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), high rate capability of 53% capacitance retention upon a current increase to 100 A g(-1) and good cycle stability, due to effective rapid and short pathways for ionic and electronic transport provided by the sub-micrometer structure of rGO gel and 3D interconnected network of Ni foam. Synergistic Effect of Fe3O4/reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites for Supercapacitors with Good Cycling Life

Abstract:Fe3O4/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites were prepared through a facile hydrolysis route and subsequent annealing process and used as the electroactive materials for supercapacitors. The asprepared Fe3O4/rGO composites exhibit much higher specific capacitances than either pure rGO or pure Fe3O4, meanwhile, the electrochemical performance of Fe3O4/rGO composites with different amount of AGO has been compared. The optimized Fe3O4/rGO composites (FG-0.8) exhibit the highest specific capacitance of 350.6 Fg(-1) at 1 mV s(-1), 157.6 F g(-1) of the specific capacitance can still be retained when the scan rate increases 100 times to 100 mV s-1, indicating a good rate capability. These Fe3O4/rGO composites also show excellent cycling performance without any decrease of specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles. These fascinating performances can be attributed to the positive synergistic effect between Fe3O4 and rGO. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Facile Synthesis of Graphite-Reduced Graphite Oxide Core–Sheath Fiber via Direct Exfoliation of Carbon Fiber for Supercapacitor Application

Abstract:A graphite-reduced graphite oxide (rGO) core-sheath structured fiber was synthesized through chemical exfoliation of graphitic carbon fiber. The graphitic carbon fiber was oxidized to form a graphite-graphite oxide core-sheath fiber and followed by thermal exfoliation to form a graphite-rGO core-sheath fiber. The core-sheath fiber with a three-dimensionally (3D) structured rGO sheath possesses a high surface area and pore size around 5.5 nm. A two-electrode supercapacitor constructed with this core-sheath fiber-based paper exhibited a high specific capacitance (140 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1)), high power density of 45 kW/kg, and good cycling stability (10% capacity loss after 3000 cycles). The surface area normalized capacitance reached as high as 59.4 μF cm(-2), indicating the effective use of surface area. The low equivalent series resistance value of 0.45 ohm in the Nyquist plot indicates an extremely small resistance between the graphite core and rGO sheet sheath. The hierarchical three-dimensional structure enables one to maximize the advantages of both graphite and rGO sheets. The 3D-structured rGO sheets sheath with regular pore structure is favorable for ion diffusion due to its interconnected porous system, while the graphite core provides an electron transport pathway with high conductivity.

Self-assembled Reduced Graphene Oxide Films with Different Thicknesses As High Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Graphene-based materials have attracted considerable attention as the electrochemical energy storage and conversion material due to their high electronic conductivity and large ion-accessible surface area. Herein, a series of self-assembled reduced graphene oxide (rGO) films are facilely prepared via a scalable vacuum filtration method, whose thickness is regulated by changing the concentration of the filtering rGO solution. The effect of the mass loading (thickness) of rGO film electrodes on its electrochemical performance is investigated. These rGO film electrodes with mass loading of 6.7 mg cm(-2) exhibit a high specific capacitance of 173.4 F g (- 1) (1.16 F cm(-2)) at 1 A g (- 1) and show high utilization of the active material due to their large specific surface area and uniform pore distribution. Moreover, a quasi-solid supercapacitor fabricated with the as-prepared rGO film electrode shows a high area capacitance of 1.03 F cm(-2) and large specific energy of 0.073 mWh cm(-2) at the specific power of 3.3 mW cm(-2), as well as excellent cycling stability of 85.6% retention after 10,000 cycles. Such remarkable performance suggests that this rGO film is promising electrode material for supercapacitor application.

Abstract:In this work, we successfully prepare binder-free reduced graphene oxide/poly(aniline-co-toluidine blue) (rGO/ PANTB) electrodes. The surface of graphene oxide sheets is efficiently coated with PANTB nano-protrusion structure through in -situ oxidative polymerization. The uniform distribution of this structure efficiently facilitates electron and ion transfer during the charge/discharge process. In addition, rGO is easily and gently obtained by immersing in hydrazine hydrate solution. The prepared rGO/PANTB-4 electrode shows maximum specific capacitance of 809.8F g-1 at current density of 1 A/g and satisfactory long-cycling stability (93.1 % capacitance retention after 5000 charge/discharge cycles) in 1.0 M H2SO4 electrolyte. Additionally, the assembled quasisolid-state symmetric supercapacitor exhibits high energy density of 26.2 Wh kg -1 at power density of 600.8 W kg- 1 in PVA-H2SO4 gel electrolyte. In summary, the construction of copolymer offers a novel approach to enhance the stability of conductive polymer, while incorporating copolymer and rGO represents an effective strategy for enhancing energy storage performance.

Abstract:We propose a novel and facile synthesis approach to a porous carbon/graphene composite. Graphene is obtained from room-temperature expanded graphite (RTEG), not involving the use of graphite oxide (GO). Porous carbon is acquired by carbonization and KOH-activation of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which is used to exfoliate RTEG into graphene and inhibit the restacking of the resultant graphene in the present work. The prepared porous carbon/graphene composite has a high specific surface area (SSA) (3008 m(2) g(-1)) and a hierarchical micro-and meso-pore structure (dominant pores in the range of 1-5 nm). Electrochemical measurement demonstrates that the as-prepared porous carbon/graphene composite can deliver an outstanding specific capacitance of up to 340 F g(-1) at 5 mV s(-1) in 6M KOH electrolyte. This specific capacitance is among the highest reported so far for porous carbon/graphene materials. Moreover, the prepared composite as an electrode material also exhibits excellent cycling stability (94.4% capacitance retention over 10 000 cycles). The as-fabricated symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 10.9Wh kg(-1) (based on total mass of electrode materials) and an outstanding energy density retention, even at high power density. Compared with conventional preparation routes for porous carbon/graphene composites, the present approach is significantly simple, convenient and cost-effective, which will make it more competent in the development of electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:A binder-free hierarchical porous N-doped graphene directly anchored on carbon fiber cloth was manufactured by a simple and practical two-step process, in which polyindole/graphene oxide (PIn/GO) composites were prepared by in-situ oxidation polymerization of indole on the surface of GO, and then PIn/GO composites coated on the surface of carbon fiber cloth was activated with KOH at 700 °C. By adjusting the contents of PIn, GO, and KOH, a hierarchical porous P7G-K-2 electrode with N content (4.98 at.%) was obtained and showed lager specific surface area and low interfacial contact resistance. The electrochemical evaluation showed that the P7G-K-2 electrode had a maximum specific capacitance of 451 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and excellent rate performance. Moreover, a simple supercapacitor consisting of two symmetrical P7G-K-2 electrodes, P7G-K-2//P7G-K-2, was assembled, the specific energy of 21.8 Wh kg−1 can be obtained at the specific power of 75 W kg−1, and it had excellent long-term cycle stability (maintaining 92% initial specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles). The excellent performance indicates that the P7G-K-2 is a promising candidate for supercapacitor electrode materials with high energy output. And this work provides a strategy to fabricate supercapacitors electrode with high specific power and specific energy.

Abstract:In this study, a 3D reduced graphene oxide modified CoS2 composite electrode (CoS2/RGO) is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal approach. The dimensions of the CoS2 nanoparticles in CoS2/RGO are effectively reduced due to the geometric confinement of RGO, and a novel, large-scale wave-like structure is formed. This leads to an enlarged specific surface area and improved conductivity and could thus be favourable for both fast electron and ion transport. As a consequence, CoS2/RGO displays better electrochemical properties than the pure individual components. When the mass ratio of CoCl2 center dot 6H(2)O and GO as the raw materials is 1 : 2, the obtained CoS2/RGO composite electrode (CoS2/RGO-2) delivers the highest capacitance of 930.3 F g(-1) 1 at 2 A g(-1) and retains a capacitance as high as 677.9 F g(-1) as the current density increases up to 20 A g(-1). Moreover, in order to obtain high energy and power densities, a high-voltage asymmetric supercapacitor has been designed and constructed using the optimized CoS2/RGO-2 composite electrode as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode material. Such a device with an operational voltage of 1.6 V can achieve a remarkable energy density of 45.7 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 797.0 W kg(-1), in addition to the superior rate capability and prominent stability towards long time charge-discharge cycles.
Highly Conductive and Porous Activated Reduced Graphene Oxide Films for High-Power Supercapacitors.

Abstract:We present a novel method to prepare highly conductive, free-standing, and flexible porous carbon thin films by chemical activation of reduced graphene oxide paper. These flexible carbon thin films possess a very high specific surface area of 2400 m(2) g(-1) with a high in-plane electrical conductivity of 5880 S m(-1). This is the highest specific surface area for a free-standing carbon film reported to date. A two-electrode supercapacitor using these carbon films as electrodes demonstrated an excellent high-frequency response, an extremely low equivalent series resistance on the order of 0.1 ohm, and a high-power delivery of about 500 kW kg(-1). While higher frequency and power values for graphene materials have been reported, these are the highest values achieved while simultaneously maintaining excellent specific capacitances and energy densities of 120 F g(-1) and 26 W h kg(-1), respectively. In addition, these free-standing thin films provide a route to simplify the electrode-manufacturing process by eliminating conducting additives and binders. The synthetic process is also compatible with existing industrial level KOH activation processes and roll-to-roll thin-film fabrication technologies.
Facile Co-Electrodeposition Method for High-Performance Supercapacitor Based on Reduced Graphene Oxide/Polypyrrole Composite Film

Abstract:A facile co-electrodeposition method has been developed to fabricate reduced graphene oxide/polypyrrole (rGO/PPy) composite films, with sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate as both a surfactant and supporting electrolyte in the precursor solution. The introduction of rGO into the PPy films forms porous structure and enhances the conductivity across the film, leading to superior electrochemical performance. By controlling the deposition time and rGO concentration, the highest area capacitance can reach 411 mF/cm2 (0.2 mA/cm2) for rGO/PPy films, whereas optimized specific capacitance is as high as 361 F/g (0.2 mA/cm2). All of the composite films exhibit excellent rate capability (at least 175 F/g at the current density of 12 mA/cm2) compared with pure PPy film (only 12 F/g at the current density of 12 mA/cm2). The rGO/PPy composite exhibits excellent cycling stability that maintains 104% of its initial capacitance after cycling for 2000 cycles and 80% for 5000 cycles. The two-electrode solid-state supercapacitor (SC) based on rGO/PPy composite electrodes demonstrates good rate performance, excellent cycling stability, as well as a high area capacitance of 222 mF/cm2. The solid-state planar SC based on the rGO/PPy composite exhibits an area capacitance of 9.4 mF/cm2, demonstrating great potential for fabrication of microsupercapacitors.
A Rapid Heat Pressing Strategy to Prepare Fluffy Reduced Graphene Oxide Films with Meso/macropores for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Among the various graphene-based macroscopic architectures, paper-like graphene films exhibit outstanding superiority such as high power output, good malleability and scale-up production. However, the two dimensional graphene nanosheets can easily restack to form dense lamellar microstructures especially in paper-like film, which lose most of the accessible surface and fade the performance of films. In this study, a simple yet high efficient heat pressing method is successfully developed to prepare reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets with crumpled topography, which can weaken the p-p and van der Waals interactions between nanosheets and inhibit the restacking of nanosheets. Therefore, the resultant RGO film exhibits fluffy layered and meso/ macroporous structure (this RGO film is named as f-RGOF). Additionally, the chemical reduction combined with iodine doping reaction endow f-RGOFs with high conductivity of 3000-3300 Sm-1. Electrochemical studies demonstrate that the f-RGOF exhibits a high gravimetric capacitance (CM) of 238.4 F g(-1) at current density of 0.5 A g(-1), and similar to 67% retention (158.8 F g(-1)) with a small IR drop (0.16 V) even up to 80 A g(-1). Moreover, the electrochemical performance of f-RGOFs only shows a slight decay (85% CM retention and almost no decay for rate capability) with the increase of areal mass loading, indicating the high utilization rate of electrode material. For practical applications, the flexible solid-state supercapacitors (FSSCs) based on f-RGOFs are also fabricated, which exhibit comparable volumetric energy density of 1.7mWh cm(-3) to 4 V/500 mu A h Li thin-film batteries as well as excellent mechanical flexibility. These results demonstrate that the strategy can be potentially applied for fabricating restacking-inhibited and high-performance RGO films using in flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) anchored carbon-coated Fe2O3 core-shell nano-particles (Fe2O3@C-rGO) has been developed successfully through a simple one-pot hydrothermal process followed by a further annealing treatment. The 3D Fe2O3@C-rGO nanocomposite consists of carbon-coated Fe2O3 nanoparticle clusters (Fe2O3@C) and rGO nanosheets. The homogenously distributed and intercalated Fe2O3@C nanoparticles between rGO nanosheets form a highly conductive 3D carbon network with rGO, and present a hierarchical pore size structure, enabling fast ion and electron transport, as well as remarkable specific surface area. The electrochemical performance in supercapacitor has been characterized, and the as-prepared Fe2O3@C-rGO electrode shows a significant high specific capacitance of 211.4 F/g at 0.5 A/g and 177.2 F/g at 20 A/g with no visible performance decay even after 2500 cycles testing. In-situ Chemical Reduction Produced Graphene Paper for Flexible Supercapacitors with Impressive Capacitive Performance

Abstract:For practical applications of graphene-based materials in flexible supercapacitors, a technological breakthrough is currently required to fabricate high-performance graphene paper by a facile method. Herein, highly conductive (similar to 6900 S m(-1)) graphene paper with loose multilayered structure is produced by a high-efficiency in-situ chemical reduction process, which assembles graphite oxide suspensions into film and simultaneously conducts chemical reduction. Graphene papers with different parameters (including different types and doses of reductants, different thicknesses and areas of films) are successfully fabricated through this in-situ chemical reduction method. Meanwhile, the influences of the graphene papers with different parameters upon the supercapacitor performance are systematically investigated. Flexible supercapacitor based on the graphene paper exhibits high areal capacitance (152.4 mF cm(-2) at current density of 2.0 mA cm(-2) in aqueous electrolyte), and excellent rate performance (88.7% retention at 8.0 mA cm(-2)). Furthermore, bracelet-shaped all-solid supercapacitor with fascinating cycling stability (96.6% retention after 10 000 cycles) and electrochemical stability (an almost negligible capacity loss under different bending states and 99.6% retention after 4000 bending cycles) is established by employing the graphene paper electrode material and polymer electrolyte. Abstract:Graphene derivatives have great potential in the field of energy storage, because of their high specific surface area, great electrical conductivity, and stable electrochemical properties. For the graphene-based electrodes with a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure, the interlayer stacking of the graphene sheets largely limits their capacitive performance, and thus hinders their wide applications. In this work, we successfully developed a lightweight, freestanding and 3D porous reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite aerogel by incorporating the conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS into interconnected rGO networks through a facile, low-cost and all-water-processable two-step synthesis route. PEDOT:PSS covering on the rGO sheets was found to not only prevent the stacking of rGO sheets, but also greatly improve the ion accessibility and mechanical stability of this highly porous spongy meshwork. Due to the synergistic effect of rGO and PEDOT:PSS, the aerogel electrodes delivered a high gravimetric specific capacitance (471 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1), an excellent rate capability, and a remarkable capacitance retention (98.71% over 20,000 cycles at 20 A g−1). Furthermore, the aerogel-based symmetric supercapacitor exhibited a wide potential window (0–1.4 V) and an excellent energy storage performance. A high energy density of 48.18 Wh kg−1 with the power density of 1.4 kW kg−1 at 0.5 A g−1, or an energy density of 32.67 Wh kg−1 corresponding to the great power density of 14,000 W kg−1 at 5 A g−1 was achieved. These results demonstrate the great potential of the rGO/PEDOT:PSS aerogel as an excellent electrode material for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Scanning positive column of atmospheric-pressure glow discharge (AGD) plasma is proposed as an eco-friendly and cost-effective strategy toward the instantaneous (∼2 s) reduction of graphene oxide (GO) paper, further leading to a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) paper with unimpeded liquid permeation for high performance supercapacitors. Unlike previous finding that AGD plasma has no effect on GO, a well-designed AGD plasma containing scanning positive column region is demonstrated to be capable of converting GO paper to rGO paper. With the synergy of energetic electrons (electron density 1.03 × 1016 cm–3) and surface touch heating (translational temperature ∼800 K), restoration of graphene’s excellent electrical properties is realized, evidenced by a substantially (5 orders of magnitude) improved electrical conductivity. Abstract:The porous flower-like microsphere structure composite of gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3), tricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared on the nickel foam (NF) substrate by the hydrothermal synthesis method and annealing process, which can be directly used as an electrode material for supercapacitors without any conductive adhesive or binder. This porous nanostructure not only improves the conductivity of the electrode, but it also shortens the migration route of ions and electrons. The innovative electrode of Gd2O3/Co3O4/rGO/NF has a high specific capacitance of 3616 F·g-1 (1 A·g-1). And the supercapacitor is assembled, with a specific capacitance of 442.5 F·g-1 (0.5 A·g-1) at room temperature (20 °C) and strong multiplicative performance (current density from 0.5 to 20 A·g-1, specific capacitance retention of 65.9 %). At a power density of 300 W·kg-1, the energy density reaches 88.5 Wh·kg-1, and the performance stays relatively stable across a large working temperature range of 0 to 60 °C. The specific capacitance is 368.3 F·g-1 even at temperatures up to 60 °C and 415.0 F·g-1 at temperatures below 0 °C. Even after 40,000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A·g-1, the capacity retention is 93.3 %, suggesting exceptional cycling stability. This study demonstrates the potential practical application of Gd2O3/Co3O4/rGO/NF electrodes in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Because of the superior hydrophilicity of graphene oxide (GO) originated from its rich oxygenic species, assembly of graphene GO to a porous carbons have long been a hot-topic, however, most of them focus on preventing the occurrence of restacking of GO so that an open-accessed nanostructure could be attained. Herein, at a just the opposite way, we developed a strategy using potassium citrate mediated evaporation induced self-restacking of GO to fabricate porous carbon nanosheets. The resultant products (PCG- x ) owns a nanosheet morphology, richness in microporosity, abundant oxygenic functionalites (8.96–9.49 atom%), moderate surface area (683–833 m 2 /g) and high packing density. Systematically electrochemical investigation show that the resultant PCG- n fabricated with optimal potassium citrate/GO ratio based electrode and devices attains superior both gravimetric and volumetric supercapacitor performances to its counterparts of rGO and PCG based ones due to the features of high microporosity ratio, moderate oxygenic functionalities and high packing density. Concerning PCG- n based device, a considerable energy density of 33 Wh/kg@900 W/kg (34.7 Wh/L@945 W/L) was achieved, the value is higher than that of rGO, PCG and some recently reported carbon based supercapacitors, offering great potential for energy storage.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) as binder-free electrode attracts enormous attention due to its favorable structure, which is advantageous for the improvement of supercapacitor capacitance and rate capability. In this paper, texture controllable HPC binder-free electrode with high capacitive performance is successfully prepared by polymerization induced phase separation method. Solvents with various viscosities and hydroiodic acid with various amounts are used to regulate the texture. The desired hierarchical porous structure endows the carbon material with a high specific surface area and ideal transportation paths. The optimized HPC binder-free electrode reaches a high specific capacitance of 180.6 F g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) in a two-electrode configuration in 6 M KOH. Surprisingly, the capacitance of the electrode still remains 79.1% (142.9 F g(-1)) at 100 A g(-1). Furthermore, energy density of the supercapacitor device ranges from 6.27 Wh kg(-1) to 4.23 Wh kg(-1) with the power density ranging from 100 W kg(-1) to 46195 W kg(-1).
