Abstract:An outdoor model test was carried out to study the long-term performance of the capillary-barrier cover with an unsaturated sand layer in the humid climate of China. The cover, being inclined by 1V: 3H, is composed of 15 cm vegetation layer, 20 cm silt layer, 10 cm sand layer, and 10 cm gravel layer. The size of model is 2m in length by 1m in width by 0.55m in thickness. The model has been subjected to the natural climate conditions of Hangzhou for two years. Surface runoff, lateral diversion, and percolation through the cover were recorded. The monitoring shows that the percolation rate through the cover is in the order of several mm per year. The percolation happened only after continuous heavy rainfall in summer. About 90% of the annual rainfall was removed by surface runoff, evapotranspiration, and lateral diversion. The amount of water removed by the lateral diversion through the unsaturated sand layer is about 16.87% of the annual rainfall. The monitoring data indicated that the capillary-barrier cover with an unsaturated sand layer performed much better than the conventional capillary-barrier cover in the humid climate of China.
