Abstract:A series of chromium(III) complexes ligated by tridentate ligands of 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolines, LCrCl3 (L=2-(ArN=CR)-1,10-phen) was synthesized and characterized. Upon activation with MAO, these complexes exhibited high activity for ethylene oligomerization and moderate activity for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:The dinuclear chromium complexes [Cr-2(N,O)(3)Cl-3] (6) (N,O = 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolylmethanolate), [Cr-2(N,O-Me2)(2)(EtOH)(2)Cl-4] (7) and [Cr-2(N,O-Me2)(2)(H2O)(2)Cl-4] (8) (N,O-Me2 = 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolyldimethylmethanolate) have been prepared and characterized, including by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 6 is unsymmetrical, with two chloride ligands terminally bound to one Cr atom, whereas 7 and 8 (in 8 center dot C4H8O) which contain two molecules of coordinated ethanol or water, respectively, are centrosymmetric. These chromium complexes are paramagnetic, and the magnetic properties of 6 and 7 in the solid state correspond to antiferromagnetic behaviour, which was confirmed by DFT calculations of their electronic structures. Complexes 6-8 were evaluated in the catalytic oligomerization and/or polymerization of ethylene with different aluminium-based cocatalysts, and MMAO proved to be the most effective one. In the presence of MMAO, the influence of different reaction parameters, such as the Al/Cr molar ratio, reaction temperature and ethylene pressure, was investigated. Complex 7 showed the highest activity for ethylene polymerization at both 1 atm and 10 atm of ethylene pressure, up to 620 000 g mol(-1)(Cr) h(-1) in the latter case.

Abstract:Organometallic hexahapto chromium metal complexation of single layer graphene, which involves constructive rehybridization of the graphene pi-system with the vacant chromium d orbital, leads to field effect devices which retain a high degree of the mobility with enhanced on-off ratio. This hexahapto mode of bonding between metal and graphene is quite distinct from the modification in electronic structure induced by conventional covalent sigma-bond formation with creation of sp3 carbon centers in graphene lattice and this chemistry is reversible.
Correlated Electron Effects in Chromium Trihalide Hetostructures with Graphene: A Tight-Binding Model Perspective

Abstract:In this study, we present an effective tight-binding model for an accurate description of the lowest energy quadruplet of conduction band in a ferromagnetic CrX$_3$ monolayer, tuned to the complementary \textit{ab initio} density functional theory simulations. This model, based on a minimum number of chromium orbitals, captures a distinctively flat dispersion in those bands but requires taking into account hoppings beyond nearest neighbours, revealing ligand-mediated electron pathways connecting remote chromium sites. Doping of states in the lowest conduction band of CrX$_3$ requires charge transfer, which, according to recent studies, can occur in graphene(G)/CrX$_3$ heterostructures. Here, we use the detailed description of the lowest conduction band in CrI$_3$ to show that G/CrI$_3$/G and G/CrI$_3$ are type-II heterostructures where light holes in graphene would coexist with heavy electrons in the magnetic layer, where the latter can be characterised by Wigner parameter $r_s\sim 15-20$ (as estimated for hBN-encapsulated structures).

Thermally Induced Hex-Graphene Transitions in 2D Carbon Crystals

Abstract:Resourceful beyond-graphene two-dimensional (2D) carbon crystals have been proposed/synthesized; however, the fundamental knowledge of their melting thermodynamics remains lacking. Here, the structural and thermodynamic properties of nine contemporary 2D carbon crystals upon heating are investigated using first-principle-based ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Those 2D carbon crystals show distinct evolution of energetic and Lindemann index that distinguish their thermal stabilities. There are two or three critical temperatures at which structural transformation occurs for non-hexagon-contained 2D carbon allotropes. Analysis of polygons reveals that non-hexagon-contained 2D carbon crystals show thermally induced hex-graphene transitions via mechanisms such as bond rotations, dissociation, and reformation of bonds. The study provides new insights into the thermodynamics and pyrolysis chemistry of 2D carbon materials, as well as structural transitions, which is of great importance in the synthesis and application of 2D materials in high-temperature processing and environment.
Organometallic Hexahapto-Functionalized Graphene: Band Gap Engineering with Minute Distortion to the Planar Structure

Abstract:Motivated from experimentally realized Cr-chemisorbed graphene, we have systematically explored the electronic properties of organometallic complexes of graphene with covalent monohexahapto-TM (TM = Cr, Fe, Ni) bonds using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that besides Cr, Fe and Ni can also bind strongly with the graphene. At the experimentally suggested coverage ratio (TM:C = 1:18, TM = Cr, Fe, Ni), our calculations suggest that the computed band gap of perfectly arranged networks of (eta(6)-graphene)-Cr(CO)(3), (eta(6)-graphene)-Fe(CO)(2), and (eta(6)-graphene)-NiCO can be enlarged to 1.08, 0.61, and 0.29 eV, respectively. The inconsistency between the computed gap (1.08 eV) and the experimental gap (similar to 10 meV) for the (eta(6)-graphene)-Cr(CO)(3) is explained, which is possibly due to the existence of regions with relatively lower coverage ratio, in view of the much smaller band gap for (eta(6)-graphene)-Cr(CO)(3) with Cr:C = 1:32 (54 meV) and with Cr:C = 1:50 (20 meV), respectively. Both band gap values are much closer to the measured band gap (similar to 10 meV). Yet, the functionalized graphene shows little structural distortion from its original planar structure. The notable features of the direct band gaps along with the planar structure render the TM-functionalized graphenes quite appealing for applications not only in nanoelectronics but also in optoelectronics such as the infrared detector and solar cell photoanode.

Abstract:The field of two dimensional (2D) materials experienced a surge of discoveries after the isolation of graphene. Among these, the transition metal compounds of Molybdenum and tungsten have been the most extensively studied materials after graphene. More recently, their group member chromium has only recently come to the limelight after the discovery of its exciting magnetic properties. As such the body of work surrounding 2D chromium-based materials is growing. Here, we present an up-to-date summary of the chromium 2D materials showing the latest advances in their experimental synthesis, characterization and the applications of 2D Chromium-based compounds. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on the future of 2D chromium-based materials. We believe that this study will be helpful to understand the field of chromium-based 2D compounds.

Dodecagonal Bilayer Graphene Quasicrystal and Its Approximants

Abstract:Dodecagonal bilayer graphene quasicrystal has 12-fold rotational order but lacks translational symmetry which prevents the application of band theory. In this paper, we study the electronic and optical properties of graphene quasicrystal with large-scale tight-binding calculations involving more than ten million atoms. We propose a series of periodic approximants which reproduce accurately the properties of quasicrystal within a finite unit cell. By utilizing the band-unfolding method on the smallest approximant with only 2702 atoms, the effective band structure of graphene quasicrystal is derived. The features, such as the emergence of new Dirac points (especially the mirrored ones), the band gap at $$M$$ point and the Fermi velocity are all in agreement with recent experiments. The properties of quasicrystal states are identified in the Landau level spectrum and optical excitations. Importantly, our results show that the lattice mismatch is the dominant factor determining the accuracy of layered approximants. The proposed approximants can be used directly for other layered materials in honeycomb lattice, and the design principles can be applied for any quasi-periodic incommensurate structures.
Structural Determination of a Graphite/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Superlattice Observed in the Experiment.

Abstract:A previous study reported an observed unidentified graphite/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) superlattice structure in special multilayer heterojunction devices via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy [Haigh S. J. et al., Nat. Mater. 2012, 11, 764-767]. In this letter, we designed and confirmed two possible graphite/hBN superlattice structures (AA and Ab), which were probably the structures observed by the aforementioned experiment. The formation enthalpies of both structures were negative, indicating that they could be successfully synthesized as the previous experiment reported. The results also showed that both structures possessed dynamic stability and elastic stability. Importantly, the theoretical interlayer distances of AA and Ab were 3.34 and 3.30 angstrom, respectively, which were consistent with the experimental value of 3.32 angstrom. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of both structures were simulated to aid in distinguishing them. This study on the atomic structure of the graphite/hBN superlattice lays a foundation for further research and application of this material.
Anomalous Hall Crystals in Rhombohedral Multilayer Graphene I: Interaction-Driven Chern Bands and Fractional Quantum Hall States at Zero Magnetic Field

Abstract:Recent experiments on rhombohedral pentalayer graphene flakes with a substrate induced moiré potential have identified both Chern insulators and fractional Quantum Hall states in the absence of an applied magnetic field. Surprisingly, these states are observed in strong displacement fields where the effects of the moiré lattice are weak, and seem to be readily accessed without fine-tuning. To address these experimental puzzles we study an interacting model of electrons in this geometry, first within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock (SCHF) approximation. We find an isolated Chern band with Chern number $|C|=1$, that moreover is relatively flat and shows good quantum geometry. Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods at fractional filling establish the presence of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states. The $|C|=1$ band in SCHF is remarkably robust to varying microscopic parameters, and is also found in the $N_L=4$ and $N_L=6$ layer systems. Remarkably, it appears stable even to switching off the moiré potential, pointing to spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry. We term this topological crystalline state the ``anomalous Hall crystal" (AHC), and argue that it constitutes a general mechanism for creating stable Chern bands in rhombohedral graphene. Our work elucidates the physics behind the recent rhombohedral pentalayer graphene observations, predicts the appearance of the same phase in other systems, and opens the door to studying the interplay between electronic topology and spontaneous translation symmetry breaking.

An Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Chromium Dimer

Abstract:The chromium dimer (Cr2) presents an outstanding challenge for many-body electronic structure methods. Its complicated nature of binding, with a formal sextuple bond and an unusual potential energy curve, is emblematic of the competing tendencies and delicate balance found in many strongly correlated materials. We present a near-exact calculation of the potential energy curve (PEC) and ground state properties of Cr2, using the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method. Unconstrained, exact AFQMC calculations are first carried out for a medium-sized but realistic basis set. Elimination of the remaining finite-basis errors and extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit is then achieved with a combination of phaseless and exact AFQMC calculations. Final results for the PEC and spectroscopic constants are in excellent agreement with experiment.

Half-Metallic Chromium-Chain-Embedded Wire in Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We present a density-functional-theory study of chromium-chain-embedded graphene and carbon nanotubes with a line defect consisting of octagonal and pentagonal carbon rings. It is shown that chromium atoms can be spontaneously adsorbed at octagonal sites and form an atomic chain along the line defect in graphene and carbon nanotubes. This chromium-chain-embedded line defect in carbon systems exhibits a local spin band gap and acts as a quasi-one-dimensional half-metallic wire. The half-metallicity results from the hybridization between d orbitals of the chromium atoms and p(z) orbitals of carbon atoms, which resembles the well-known p(z)-d Zener exchange-type mechanism. Moreover, the spin-dependent electronic properties in nanotubes can be controlled by the tube diameter. These results open a new route to explore spintronics in carbon-based nanodevices.

Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of four neutral chromium(III) complexes bearing N,O,N′-tridentate ligands, [LCrCl3], (L=2-[(2-pyridylmethoxy)methyl]pyridine, 1; L=8-(2-pyridylmethoxy)quinoline, 2; L=8-[(2-pyridylmethoxy)methyl]quinoline, 3; L=8-(quinolin-8-ylmethoxy)quinoline, 4). Molecular structures of 1–3 have been determined by X-ray crystallography, which show that L1 and L3 exhibit facial configuration in 1 and 3 while L2 adopts meridional arrangement in 2. The ethylene polymerization experiments show that complexes 1–4 are moderately active precatalysts for ethylene polymerization with activation with MAO.
Stability of Anomalous Hall Crystals in multilayer rhombohedral graphene

Abstract:Recent experiments showing an integer quantum anomalous Hall effect in pentalayer rhombohedral graphene have been interpreted in terms of a valley-polarized interaction-induced Chern band. The resulting many-body state can be viewed as an Anomalous Hall Crystal (AHC), with a further coupling to a weak moiré potential. We explain the origin of the Chern band and the corresponding AHC in the pentalayer system. To describe the competition between AHC and Wigner Crystal (WC) phases, we propose a simplified low-energy description that predicts the Hartree-Fock phase diagram to good accuracy. This theory can be fruitfully viewed as `superconducting ring' in momentum space, where the emergence of Chern number is analogous to the flux quantization in a Little-Parks experiment. We discuss the possible role of the moiré potential, and emphasize that even if in the moiré-less limit, the AHC is not favored (beyond Hartree-Fock) over a correlated Fermi liquid, the moiré potential will push the system into a `moiré-enabled AHC'. We also suggest that there is a range of alignment angles between R5G and hBN where a $C = 2$ insulator may be found at integer filling.

Infrared Photodissociation Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study of Homoleptic Dinuclear Chromium Carbonyl Cluster Cations with A Linear Bridging Carbonyl Group

Abstract:Infrared spectra of mass-selected homoleptic dinuclear chromium carbonyl cluster cations Cr-2(CO)(n)(+) with n = 7-9 are measured via infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region in the gas phase. The structures are established by comparison of the experimental spectra with the simulated spectra derived from density functional calculations. The Cr-2(CO)(n)(+) cluster cations are characterized to have the (OC)(5)Cr-C-O-Cr(CO)(n-6)(+) structures with a linear bridging carbonyl group bonded to one chromium atom through its carbon atom and to the other chromium atom through its oxygen atom. The cluster cations all have a sextet ground state with the positive charge and the unpaired electrons located on the Cr(CO)(n-6) moiety. The formation of the linear bridging structures without Cr-Cr bonding can be rationalized that chromium forms strong Cr-CO bonds but weak Cr-Cr bonds.
Anomalous Hall Crystals in Rhombohedral Multilayer Graphene II: General Mechanism and a Minimal Model

Abstract:We propose a minimal "three-patch model" for the anomalous Hall crystal (AHC), a topological electronic state that spontaneously breaks both time-reversal symmetry and continuous translation symmetry. The proposal for this state is inspired by the recently observed integer and fractional quantum Hall states in rhombohedral multilayer graphene at zero magnetic field. There, interaction effects appear to amplify the effects of a weak moiré potential, leading to the formation of stable, isolated Chern bands. It has been further shown that Chern bands are stabilized in mean field calculations even without a moiré potential, enabling a realization of the AHC state. Our model is built upon the dissection of the Brillouin zone into patches centered around high symmetry points. Within this model, the wavefunctions at high symmetry points fully determine the topology and energetics of the state. We extract two quantum geometrical phases of the non-interacting wavefunctions that control the stability of the topologically nontrivial AHC state. The model predicts that the AHC state wins over the topological trivial Wigner crystal in a wide range of parameters, and agrees very well with the results of full self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations of the rhombohedral multilayer graphene Hamiltonian.

Low-Dimensional Metal–Organic Coordination Structures on Graphene

Abstract:We report the formation of one- and two-dimensional metal–organic coordination structures from para-hexaphenyl-dicarbonitrile (NC–Ph6–CN) molecules and Cu atoms on graphene epitaxially grown on Ir(111). By varying the stoichiometry between the NC–Ph6–CN molecules and Cu atoms, the dimensionality of the metal–organic coordination structures could be tuned: for a 3:2 ratio, a two-dimensional hexagonal porous network based on threefold Cu coordination was observed, while for a 1:1 ratio, one-dimensional chains based on twofold Cu coordination were formed. The formation of metal–ligand bonds was supported by imaging the Cu atoms within the metal–organic coordination structures with scanning tunneling microscopy. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements demonstrated that the electronic properties of NC–Ph6–CN molecules and Cu atoms were different between the two-dimensional porous network and one-dimensional molecular chains.

Abstract:Numerous experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted to explore the bonding models and relative stability of Cr2,Mo2,W2 groups within chromium family.This paper reviews the current research trajectory and recent advancements,specially focusing on their bonding configurations and strategies for further stabilization.The analysis suggests that the instability of Cr2,Mo2,W2 groups results from the electron repulsion in tightly packed electrons between the two individual atoms.Thus,approaches to stabilize these molecules fundamentally aim to reduce electron density and mitigate electron-electron repulsion.
Topological analysis of the electron density in the chromium–manganese chalcogenide clusters, [E2CrMn2(CO)9]−2 (E = S, Se, Te)

Abstract:The nature of the chemical bonding interactions in the trigonal–bipyramidal chromium–manganese chalcogenide clusters, [E 2 CrMn 2 (CO) 9 ] −2 (E = S, Se, and Te), has been studied using two methods of the quantum chemical topology analysis: electron density q(r) and electron localization function (ELF). The evaluation of these properties reveals important details about chemical bond interactions within the clusters. According to the results, it has been confirmed that the bonding between Mn–Mn and Mn–Cr is absent in all three trinuclear clusters 1–3 . The presence of bridging chalcogenide atoms (S, Se, and Te) concerning M–M is a key factor in determining the distribution of electron densities. This factor has a significant impact on the formation of bonds between these transition metal atoms. Calculations of the non-negligible delocalization index for clusters 1–3 confirm a 5c–12e bonding interaction that is delocalized over the five-membered CrMn 2 (μ−E) 2 ring. In clusters 1–3 , the M–E bonds between Mn and Cr metal atoms and E ligands (S, Se, and Te) exhibit similar topological parameters that are comparable to that of pure covalent single bonds between nonmetal atoms. Furthermore, the source function calculations reveal that the bonded E atoms contribute the most at each Mn–E and Cr–E bcps, with a small contribution from the bonded metal atom and OCO atoms. Interestingly, non-bonded transition metal atoms act as sinks rather than sources of electron density. The M...OCO delocalization indexes and SF calculations indicate significant CO to M π -back-donation. This work aims to provide insights into the interactions between Mn–Mn and Mn–Cr, and the changes in bonding interactions across the di-bridging chalcogen elements series. It also aims to examine the role of carbonyl groups in M–M interaction within the clusters.
