Abstract:Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide doped titanium dioxide (WOx-TiO2) powders were prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis and characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-Vis absorption spectra and TEM. Results showed that WO, not only hindered the growth of TiO2 particles but also greatly increased the transformation temperature (>800 degrees C) from anatase to rutile during sintering; the dominant fraction of tungsten oxides was non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WxOy) with Wn+ (4<n<6), which could easily substitute Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2. The light absorption band of TiO2 changed from the near UV to the visible light range (2.68 eV in 1.0 %WOx-TiO2) because of the tungsten impurity energy level induced by WxTi1-xO2. The photocatalysis experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully degraded within 1h using WOx-TiO2 with an optimal WOx dosage of 1% under visible light irradiation.
Enhanced Visible-Light Photoactivity of CuWO4 Through a Surface-Deposited CuO

Abstract:Several papers have shown that CuWO4 is active under visible light for water oxidation at an applied potential bias and for organic degradation in an aerated aqueous suspension. In this work, we report that the observed reduction of O-2 on the irradiated CuWO4 is a multielectron transfer process with the formation of H2O2. More importantly, the surface modification of CuWO4 with 1.8 wt % of CuO can increase the activity by approximately 9 times under UV light and by 5 times under visible light, for phenol degradation in aerated aqueous suspension. The catalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal reaction between Cu(NO3)(2) and Na2WO4, followed by thermal treatment at 773 K. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that triclinic CuWO4 (40 nm) was covered by monoclinic CuO (4 nm). Through a combination of photo- and electrochemical measurement, a plausible mechanism responsible for the activity enhancement is proposed, involving an interfacial electron transfer from CuO to CuWO4 and an interfacial hole transfer from CuWO4 to CuO.
Improved Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity of WO3 Through CuWO4 for Phenol Degradation

Abstract:Development of a visible light photocatalyst is challenging. Herein, we report a significant activity enhancement of WO3 upon addition of CuWO4. Reaction was carried out under visible light for phenol degradation in aqueous suspension in the presence of H2O2. A maximum reaction rate was observed at 1.0 wt% CuWO4, which was 2.1 and 4.3 times those measured with WO3 and CuWO4, respectively. Similar results were also obtained from the photocatalytic formation of OH radicals, and from the electrochemical reduction of O-2. A possible mechanism responsible for the improved activity of WO3 is proposed, involving the electron transfer from CuWO4 to WO3, followed by the reduction of H2O2 over WO3. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Bi2WO6@TCNQ visible light photocatalyst with a core-shell structure was synthesized by adsorption methods. The core-shell structure results in the fast transfer of photogenerated carriers, reduced carrier recombination and photogenerated holes on the HOMO level of TCNQ can be injected into the VB of Bi2WO6 under visible light irradiation, resulting in the direct oxidation of organic pollutants. The photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6@TCNQ was gradually enhanced with an increasing proportion of TCNQ. When the mass fraction of TCNQ reaches 0.5%, it exhibits the highest visible light activity. The apparent rate constant k of Bi2WO6@TCNQ-0.5% is almost 2.2 times as high as that of pure Bi2WO6.
Photocatalytic Degradation of the Reactive Brilliant Red and Its Mechanism over Nano-sized TiO2-Cu2O Under Visible Irradiation

Abstract:A series of TiO2-Cu2O mixed oxides were prepared by the hydrolysis of titanium butoxide and reduction of copper acetate with hydrazine.The photocatalytic degradations of the reactive brilliant red X-3Bover the TiO2-Cu2O were investigated under the irradiation with visible light.The effects of composition,amount of catalyst and the diluted oxygen as well as H2O2 were studied.In addition,the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of organic compounds over the Cu2O and TiO2-Cu2O was discussed.The results showed that the complex oxides exhibited higher activity than single Cu2O due to the synergetic effect between TiO2 and Cu2O.The oxidative species in Cu2O were believed to be free radical·OH and electric holes.·OH free radicals were originated from the super oxygen anions,which were produced from the reduction of oxygen absorbed on the surface of Cu2O by photoelectrons.The holes produced through light excitation could not oxidize OH-to·OH directly.
Efficient Degradation of Organic Pollutant with WOx Modified Nano TiO2 under Visible Irradiation

Abstract:Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide-doped titanium dioxide (WOx-TiO2) powders were prepared by a sol-mixing method. The photooxidation efficiencies of WOx-TiO2 catalysts were evaluated by conducting a set of experiments of photodegrading Methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully degraded using WOx-TiO2 under visible light irradiation, especially when the pH value of the solution was over 6. It was found that an optimal WOx dosage of 1% in WOx-TiO2 achieved the highest photocatalytic activity in the conditions of this experiment, on which MB was photooxided completely within 1h. Powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis absorption spectra, transmission electron micrograph (TEM) measurements. These results showed that tungsten oxides not only hindered the growth of TiO2 particles but greatly increased the transformation temperature (>800°C) from anatase to rutile during sintering; the dominant fraction of tungsten oxides was non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WxOy) with Wn+ (4<n<6), which could easily substitute Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2 because of the similarity in the ion radius of Wn+ and Ti4+ to form non-stiochiometric solid solution of WxTi1−xO2. The light absorption band of TiO2 changed from the near UV to the visible light range (2.98eV in 1.0% WOx-TiO2) because of the tungsten impurity energy level induced by WxTi1−xO2.
Improved photocatalytic activity of WO3 through clustered Fe2O3 for organic degradation in the presence of H2O2.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of organic substrates over WO(3) in an aerated aqueous suspension is very slow due to the difficulty of O(2) reduction by the conduction band electron on WO(3). In this work, we report on H(2)O(2) as an electron scavenger significantly accelerating the photodegradation of phenol and azo-dye X3B in water under UV or visible light. More importantly, an iron-containing WO(3) (FeW) synthesized through thermal decomposition of a ferrotungstenic acid displayed a much higher activity than pure WO(3) (HW) prepared in parallel. As the sintering temperature increased, both FeW and HW showed an exponential increase in activity. The maximum rate constant of phenol degradation obtained with FeW at 400 °C was about 2 times larger than that with HW at 600 °C. Sample characterization with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and other techniques revealed that ferric species (0.3 wt % Fe(2)O(3)) were mainly present as clusters on the oxide surface at 120 °C and then they diffused toward the lattice sites of WO(3) at high temperature, which was detrimental to the photocatalytic reaction. 5,5-Dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide spin-trapping EPR showed that the production of hydroxyl radicals was greatly enhanced upon the addition of H(2)O(2), the trend of which among different catalysts was the same as that of the rate of phenol degradation. The catalysts after excitation at 350 nm displayed a blue emission centered at 469 nm, the intensity of which varied with the catalyst activity nearly as expected. A possible mechanism for the improved photoactivity of WO(3) is proposed involving the electron transfer from WO(3) to Fe(2)O(3) and the reaction of the reduced oxide with H(2)O(2) to generate hydroxyl radicals.
Oxygen vacancy engineering of ultra-small CuWO 4 nanoparticles for boosting photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation

Abstract:Nanomaterials have attracted great interest in the field of photocatalytic degradation due to their larger specific surface area and efficient charge/mass transfer ability, which are beneficial for enhancing photocatalytic activity. However, the bandgap of photocatalysts would increase with the size reduction, weakening the photoabsorption ability. Thus the relationship between the size of catalysts and photoactivity should be balanced to achieve optimal photocatalytic performance. Herein, ultra-small CuWO 4 nanoparticles ( ca. 39 nm) with moderate oxygen vacancies (CuWO 4 –OVs) were synthesized by the cascade strategy (ligand confinement@fast calcination). The introduction of oxygen vacancies offset the deficiency of light absorption ability caused by the small size effect. Besides, oxygen vacancies could provide more reaction active sites, conducive to the adsorption and activation of dye molecules and H 2 O. Degradation experiments reveal that the optimized photocatalyst CuWO 4 –OVs 350 shows outstanding photocatalytic activity, and the removal ratio of methylene blue (MB) reaches over 90.26% in 70 min, exceeding that of pure CuWO 4 –air (37.66%). Additionally, the degradation performance of CuWO 4 –OVs 350 surpasses most of the other CuWO 4 -based photocatalytic systems. More importantly, the photocatalytic degradation activity of CuWO 4 –OVs 350 could remain at 88.26% even after five cycles, and high photostability was achieved. This work affords constructive inspiration for synergistic photoactivity enhancement and increase of catalyst reaction active sites to achieve eminent photocatalytic degradation performance.

Abstract:An oxide photocatalyst Bi2WO6 with corner-shared WO6 octahedral layered structure was synthesized. Its band gap was determined to be 2.69 eV from UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The photocatalyst showed not only the activity for photocatalytic O2 evolution with the initial evolution rate of 2.0 μmol/h but also the activity of mineralizing both CHCl3 and CH3CHO contaminants under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, wavelength dependence of CH3CHO decomposition was observed, which indicated that the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst was in good agreement with its light-absorption ability.
Improved Photocatalytic Activity of Tio2 on the Addition of Cuwo4

Abstract:Various methods that aim to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 have been reported in the literature. Herein, we report that addition of CuWO4 into the aqueous suspension of TiO2 can result in significant enhancement in the rate of phenol degradation. As the amount of CuWO4 increased, the rate of phenol degradation increased and then decreased. A maximum rate of phenol degradation observed with 2 wt % CuWO4 was about 2.83 times that in the absence of CuWO4. A similar result was also observed with CuO. However, six consecutive tests showed that CuWO4/TiO2 was much more stable than CuO/TiO2, due to the very high stability of CuWO4 against photocorrosion. The improved activity of TiO2 is not due to CuWO4 and CuO themselves and also does not match their solubility in aqueous solution. Moreover, for the generation of OH radicals, and for the decomposition of H2O2 in aqueous solution, CuWO4/TiO2 was also more active than TiO2. Through a (photo) electrochemical measurement, a possible mechanism is proposed, involving electron transfer from the irradiated TiO2 to CuWO4 that facilitates the charge separation of TiO2 and consequently accelerates reactions at interfaces.

Abstract:With an attempt to extend light absorption of the TiO2-based photocatalysts toward the visible light range and eliminate the rapid recombination of excited electrons/holes during photoreaction, new photocatalyst (WOx-TiO2) powder was prepared by a sol–gel method. The photooxidation efficiency of WOx-TiO2 catalyst was also evaluated by conducting a set of experiments to photodegrade methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The photocatalytic activity of WOx-TiO2 was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–VIS absorption spectra, X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence spectra (PL), surface photovoltage spectra (SPS) and electron-field-induced surface photovoltage spectra (EFISPS). The experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully photodegraded using WOx-TiO2 under visible light irradiation. It was found that an optimal WOx dosage of 3% in WOx-TiO2 achieved the highest rate of MB photodegradation in this experimental condition. It has been confirmed that WOx-TiO2 could be excited by visible light (E<3.2eV) and the recombination rate of electrons/holes in WOx-TiO2 declined due to the existence of WO3 doped in TiO2. The order of its photoactivity from weak to strong had a good agreement with that of PL intensity and that of EFISPS intensity from strong to weak.
Improved Photocatalytic Activity for Phenol Degradation of Rutile TiO2 on the Addition of CuWO4 and Possible Mechanism

Abstract:Rutile is much less active than anatase and brookite for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution. In this work, we found that addition of a trace amount of CuWO4 greatly accelerated phenol degradation in an aerated aqueous suspension of rutile. The increased rate was not only much higher than those of anatase and brookite, prepared at the same temperature (600 degrees C), but also increased continuously with the sintering temperature of rutile from 150 to 800 degrees C. These observations indicate that the high intrinsic photocatalytic activity of rutile produced at a high sintering temperature can be exploited by using co-catalyst CuWO4. Furthermore, as the amount of CuWO4 added to the suspension increased, the amount of H2O2 produced in the presence of excess phenol increased and then decreased; the trend was similar to that observed for phenol degradation. The observed positive effect of CuWO4 is mainly caused by solid CuWO4 rather than Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution. A (photo) electrochemical measurement showed that interfacial electron transfer occurred from the irradiated rutile to CuWO4. This would improve the charge-separation efficiency, and consequently increase the rates of O-2 reduction and phenol degradation.
Incorporating W cations into ZnO nanosheets: an efficient method towards ZnO/ZnWO4 photocatalysts for highly effective degradation of organic compounds under UV and visible-light irradiation

Abstract:In this study, novel ZnO/ZnWO4 nanocatalysts were synthesized for the removal of organic compounds under ultraviolet (UV) and visible-light irradiation. ZnO was prepared by a homogenous precipitation process followed by an impregnation technique for the formation of ZnO/ZnWO4 photocatalysts with different percentages of tungsten. The resulting photocatalysts formed a mesoporous network of ZnO nanoparticles, with a size of 18 nm, and modified by tungsten, according to X-ray diffraction and N2 sorption analyses. Their morphology and composition were studied by transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. According to optical studies, the absorption edge of the ZnO nanomaterials revealed that the red-shift with augmented tungsten concentration resulted in a decrease in the forbidden energy gap (Eg) from 3.25 eV to 2.95 eV. Therefore, the ZnO/ZnWO4 compound absorbed light in the visible-light region, which probably indicates that the developed photocatalysts may be active in this region. The presence of surface hydroxyl groups was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and these hydroxyl groups play a significant role in the photocatalytic activity of the compounds by catching the formed holes in the valence band under irradiation to create the hydroxyl radical, thus improving the photocatalytic property. Zn–ZnW0.2 showed the best photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB), with a rate constant Kapp = 0.095 min−1 (98.5% degradation) and Kapp = 0.04 min−1 (91% degradation) after 30 and 60 min of irradiation under UV and visible light, respectively. This improvement was rationalized by the effective separation of photogenerated electron–hole (e−/h+) pairs due to the formation of a heterojunction structure between ZnWO4 (ECB = +0.165 eV; EVB = 2.885 eV) and ZnO (ECB = −0.365 eV; EVB = 3.115 eV). In addition, results confirmed that holes (h+) and ˙OH radicals are the major reactive species involved in the photodegradation of RhB dye. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed for explaining the photodegradation of RhB over the ZnO/ZnWO4 photocatalyst. The Zn–ZnW0.2 photocatalyst retained its high photodegradation rate and good photostability over four consecutive cycles with no changes in its morphology.

UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O composite as an enhanced visible light photocatalyst for decomposition of organic pollutants

Abstract:UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O composites with different loading amounts of UiO-66-NH2 were successfully synthesized by using a facile impregnation process. The photocatalytic performances of the composites were measured by the methyl orange (MO) degradation. It is found that the developed UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O composites possessed better photocatalytic behavior than the pure Cu2O, and the 20 wt% UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O photocatalyst showed the excellent photodegradation activity, by which 98.6% of MO could be decomposed within 50 min. In addition, it showed an excellent reusability since the severe photocorrosion issue of Cu2O was suppressed significantly by combining with UiO-66-NH2. The excellent photodegradation efficiency of 20 wt% UiO-66-NH2/Cu2O should be due to the synergistic effect between Cu2O and UiO-66-NH2, in which efficient interfacial charge transfer improved the separation effect of photoinduced electron-hole pairs within the Z-scheme heterojunction The active species trapping experiments indicated that the photo-generated h+ and O2 − radicals were the major active species involved in the MO degradation under visible light.

Abstract:Due to environmental pollution caused by organic pollutants, there is an urgent need to develop renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. In this study, N-doped graphene-based CuO/WO3/Cu photocatalyst (CuO/WO3/) was prepared for degrading organic pollutants by using Cu(salen)PW12 complex as the precursor and GO as the substrate. The CuO/WO3/ photocatalyst not only solved the problem that CuO/WO3 heterojunction easily expands into powder and causes poor recyclability, but also effectively promoted the separation of photoinduced e- and h+ and inhibited their recombination. The catalyst can effectively catalyze the decomposition of 4-nitrophenol, and the cycle test confirmed that it has good cycle stability. Under UV–Vis light irradiation, CuO/WO3/ can effectively degrade four kinds of organic dyes and the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes was deduced. It is worth noting that N-doped graphene regulates the band-gap of the material, leading CuO/WO3/ to generate hydrogen in the photocatalytic process. This study is expected to provide a promising way for effective degradation of organic pollutants.

Preparation of organic porous materials-TiO2/cu composite with excellent photocatalytic degradation performances toward degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater

Abstract:Organic porous materials-TiO2/Cu composite (OPMTC) were readily fabricated through two steps, which included the formation of organic porous materials (OPM) and the in-situ synthesis of TiO2/Cu composite (TiO2/Cu) in the pore of OPM. Furthermore, the photocatalytic degradation behaviors of the photocatalysts toward organic pollutants were also investigated under simulated and nature sunlight, respectively. Finding showed that OPMTC allowed methyl orange, phenol, and methylene blue to be decomposed under simulated sunlight by the rate of 91.6%, 98.6%, and 100%, even to degraded DMF with a rate of 74% that revealed excellent photocatalytic degradation properties toward organic pollutants. Interestingly, OPMTC still kept the photocatalytic degradation ability after 6 time reuse. These results indicated the potential applications of OPMTC in the treatment of wastewater. Besides, the measurements of free radical intensities including superoxide free radical (O2·), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radical (·OH) of photocatalysts attributed to understanding the mechanism. The tested finding indicated that metallic copper doped TiO2 are beneficial to produce more free radicals thereby increasing photocatalytic degradation performances TiO2/Cu. OPMTC also had absorption ability measuring by BET that increased the contract area between photocatalyst and organic pollutants, thus, combining the two advantages thereby resulting in improving photocatalytic degradation properties.

A Novel Heterojunction CuWO4/g-C3N4 Photocatalyst for Removal of Organic Pollutant under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:In this study, a series of CuWO4/g-C3N4 composites were synthesized using a facile construction method. The structural characteristics of the composites were examined using various techniques, including XRD, SEM, SEM-EDS, FT-IR, and UV–DRS. The photocatalytic performance of the CuWO4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites was evaluated in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The findings revealed that the CuWO4/g-C3N4 composite with a mass ratio of 10% CuWO4 displayed the highest efficiency (89%) in degrading MB during an 80-minute photodegradation process, which was consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetics. These results clearly demonstrate that the formation of a Z-scheme CuWO4/g-C3N4 heterojunction significantly improves the photocatalytic efficiency by promoting rapid separation of electron-hole pairs and enhancing the redox capability. Additionally, the photodegradation efficiency remained above 85% even after four cycles, suggesting the stability of the catalyst.

Abstract:As competitive photocatalysts, Cu2O nanoparticles meet with severe photogenerated carries recombination and insufficient light absorption, leading to the poor photocatalytic performance. Herein, the truncated Cu2O-Au (CA) binary and Cu2O-Au-TiO2 (CAT) ternary octahedra with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs), preferentially supported on the (110) and (100) planes of Cu2O, are synthesized for efficient photocatalytic degradation reactions. The photodegradation rates of MO of CA1 (Cu2O-Au containing 1 wt % Au) and CAT are as high as 95.61% and 96.5% under 60 min of visible light irradiation, respectively. On the one hand, the synergistic function of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au NPs and Schottky barrier accelerate the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. On the other hand, a Z-scheme electron transfer system is constructed in CAT to promote the photodegradation performance. According to the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulation result, there is a strong electric field enhancement at the contact sites between Au, Cu2O and TiO2, which accelerates the electron transfer to a large extent and separates the electron-hole pairs. Therefore, this work may provide an approach for the synthesis and applications of multiple heterostructure catalyst.

Abstract:In this study, a series of CuMo1-xWxO4 solid solutions (CMWO) were prepared by adjusting the ratio of Mo to W. The morphology, phase, specific surface area, and valence state of the catalysts were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, BET, and XPS analysis. The photoelectric characteristics of the CuMo1-xWxO4 solid solution materials were analyzed in detail using Mott-Schottky, EIS, PL, and UV-vis DRS analysis. The experimental results show that the energy band structure of the CMWO solid solutions can be tuned to inhibit the carrier recombination under light excitation, thereby facilitating effective electron-hole pair separation. This significantly enhances the performance of photo-assisted PMS activation for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The solid solution material CMWO-3, with a Mo/W ratio of 7:3, achieved a TC degradation rate of 88% at pH 5. After five cycles, the TC degradation rate remained at 86%. Throughout the reaction process, photocatalysis and PMS activation exhibited a synergistic effect, generating reactive species such as SO4·-, ·OH, 1O2, and ·O2-.

Abstract:In this work, highly dispersed and low-metal loading CuOx@BiVO4 nanocomposites were fabricated via a multistep method. The fabricated samples exhibited excellent stability and a dependent tetracycline hydrochloride photocatalysis degradation efficiency on CuOx loading ratio, among which 0.4 %CuOx loading sample displayed best photocatalytic performance under visible light illumination. The loading CuOx significantly broadened the spectrum absorption range, enhanced the photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation and facilitated the formation of ·O2 – and ·OH in CuOx@BiVO4. Moreover, the trapping experiments proved the crucial roles of h+, ·OH and ·O2 – in the photodegradation process. Finally, a plausible photocatalytic mechanism has been proposed based on all analytical results.
