Abstract:The effect of ferric nitrate on microbial community and enhancement of stabilization process for sewage sludge was investigated in autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion. The disinhibition of volatile fatty acids (VFA) was obtained with alteration of individual VFA concentration order. Bacterial taxonomic identification by 454 high-throughput pyrosequencing found the dominant phylum Proteobacteria in non-dosing group was converted to phylum Firmicutes in dosing group after ferric nitrate added and simplification of bacteria phylotypes was achieved. The preponderant Tepidiphilus sp. vanished, and Symbiobacterium sp. and Tepidimicrobium sp. were the most advantageous phylotypes with conditioning of ferric nitrate. Consequently, biodegradable substances in dissolved organic matters increased, which contributed to the favorable environment for microbial metabolism and resulted in acceleration of sludge stabilization. Ultimately, higher stabilization level was achieved as ratio of soluble chemical oxygen demand to total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) decreased while TCOD reduced as well in dosing group comparing to non-dosing group.
Achieving Nitritation by Treating Sludge with Free Nitrous Acid: the Effect of Starvation.

Abstract:Side-stream sludge treatment using free nitrous acid (FNA) is a novel strategy to achieve nitritation in mainstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To optimize nitritation, the effect of starvation on this strategy was investigated in this study. The results showed that pre-starvation, which is the starvation before FNA treatment, enhanced the resistance of sludge to FNA. This led to a decrease in the nitrite accumulation rate (NAR), which dropped from 70% to 27% after aerobic pre-starvation. This was further confirmed in the FNA treatment using the sludge collected from the secondary settling tank (anoxic pre-starvation) and the aerobic zone (without starvation) of an Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic system. The post-starvation, which was the starvation after FNA treatment, decreased NAR from 63% to 14%. To obtain a higher NAR, the sludge used for FNA treatment should be collected from aerobic zone, and be returned to aerobic zone after treatment to avoid pre-starvation and post-starvation.

Abstract:The effects of ferric nitrate additions in thermophilic, mesophilic and psychrophilic conditions were investigated in aerobic digestion for sewage sludge. The results showed that the addition of chemical could significantly enhance the volatile solid (VS) removal by shortening 7 days of stabilization time, and increasing 5.52% and 2.12% after 21 days of digestion at 55 degrees C, 35 degrees C and 15 degrees C comparing to the control, respectively. Higher efficiency of removing excessive volatile fatty acid (VFA) was achieved at higher temperature of digestion with ferric nitrate, which resulted in the different orders and changing tendencies of individual VFA. Thus, greater rate of biodegradation of organic substances and higher level of stabilization were obtained for sludge with ferric nitrate at higher temperature, with lower total chemical oxygen demand and soluble chemical oxygen demand. Acceleration of protein disintegration with higher pH, and lower oxidation reduction potential but lower total phosphorus was also acquired by addition of ferric nitrate. VS concentration with chemical is well fitted by an exponential decay function over a temperature range of 15-55 degrees C, which represented that the improvement of stabilization of sludge with ferric nitrate was almost independent of temperature, but the chemical itself. Abstract:This study investigated the effect of ferric nitrate on mitigating the inhibition of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during the initial phase of sewage sludge composting amended with rice bran. During the 34-day lab-scale composting, the supplementation of ferric nitrate enhanced the degradation of VFAs by up to 3 times as compared to the control. The organic matters loss (OML) rate in the treatment reactor was almost doubled with supplementation of ferric nitrate as compared to the control reactor during the initial phase. Eventually the treatment reactor achieved a 39.0% OML by the end of composting, which was 22% higher than the control. Ferric nitration addition mitigated the inhibition of VFAs by stimulating denitrification which consumed protons and VFAs. Ferric nitrate addition also decreased the electrical conductivity by 23% in the final compost product, reducing the possibility of phytotoxicity issue upon soil application. In summary, the results demonstrated that ferric nitrate addition could be an effective strategy for enhanced sludge composting.

Abstract:Since excessive volatile fatty acid (VFA) inhibits microbial activity at the beginning of aerobic thermophilic composting of sewage sludge,ferric salts were employed in this study to disinhibit excessive VFA and accelerate the process of composting.Results showed that both ferric nitrate and ferric chloride were effective.Thereinto,the removal efficiency of sludge volatile solid (VS) by ferric nitrate treatment achieved 28.0％,increased by 28.4％ compared to the contrast.The addition of ferric nitrate also resulted in better temperature rising rate and maximum temperature than those of the contrast.Additionally,concentration of total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) was less than 15 g/kg DS (Dry Sludge) during the composting process,which was significantly decreased.Lower soluble COD (SCOD) and soluble NH4+-N were obtained by the treatment.Furthermore,the removal efficiency of VS by ferric chloride treatment achieved 26.0％,increased by 19.3％ compared to the contrast.However,the VS removal,temperature rising rate and maximum temperature by ferric citrate and ferric sulfate treatment exhibited no obvious increase,or even lower than the contrast,indicating the inhibition during composting process.
The Influence of Aerobic Sludge Retention Time on Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Dyeing and Printing Wastewater and Sewage Sludge

Abstract:Two pilot-scale activated sludge systems comprising anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and aerobic plug flow reactor (PFR) were operated aiming to minimize excess sludge output of the activated sludge process through coupled alkaline hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion. Variations in the effluent total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and NH4+ -N concentration proved that the process not only could minimize excess sludge production but also guarantee the effluent TCOD well below the discharging limit (150 mg/l) if the inverse ratio of the aerobic sludge recirculation to anaerobic reactor did not exceed 60% for system A with 10 d aerobic sludge retention time (SRT) and 40% for system B (SRT was 25 d). The sludge activity at aerobic SRT of 25 d was evidently lower than aerobic SRT of 10 d. Those differences of sludge characteristics affected the inverse sludge ratio obviously. Aerobic bacteria after internal and external decay were converted to anoxic or anaerobic biomass. The distinct differences in sludge yield of aerobic and anaerobic/anoxic processes could explain how aerobic SRT decided excess sludge activity which consequently affected anaerobic codigestion of printing and dyeing wastewater and sewage sludge.

Abstract:The mechanism of newly prepared alkaline ferrate (NPAF) on the process of sludge aggregates disintegration and combined with anaerobic digestion to enhance the efficiency of reduction and dewaterability of excess sludge was investigated. The results showed that under a NPAF dosage of 70 mg/g total suspended solids (TSS), the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) structure of the sludge aggregates was disintegrated, and the sludge disintegration degree (DDSCOD) reached 22.5%. The microbial cells in the sludge aggregates were not oxidized, and the direct anaerobic digestion of pretreated sludge could realize the rapid release and degraded of organic matter in the sludge and favor enhancement of the sludge settleability and dewaterability. Compared with the original sludge, the MLVSS of the sludge treated with ferrate pretreatment combined with anaerobic digestion decreased by 40.6%. NPAF exhibited oxidation and flocculation functions rather than phosphorus removal during the pretreatment process. Compare with direct anaerobic digestion of pretreated sludge, inoculation of the raw sludge during anaerobic digestion did not accelerate the release of organic matter, but could effectively enhance the sludge dewaterability and ensure the subsequent treatment of the sludge.
The Influence and Mechanism of Influent Ph on Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Sewage Sludge and Printing and Dyeing Wastewater

Abstract:Two pilot-scale activated sludge systems consisting of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and an aerobic plug flow reactor (PFR) were operated with the aim of minimising excess sludge output of the activated sludge process through coupled alkaline hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion. Variations in the effluent of total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD), NH4+-N and TP concentration proved that the recirculation ratio of aerobic excess biomass recirculated to ABR could obtain 60% of theoretically total aerobic excess sludge production, under aerobic conditions with effluent TCOD concentration well below the discharge limit of 150 mg/l. After hydrochloric acid addition in the influent to neutralise high influent pH, the solubilisation of alkaline hydrolysis was obviously damaged and the effluent concentrations exceeded the discharging limit. High influent pH could promote the reduction efficiency of excess sludge production during co-digestion of printing and dyeing wastewater and sewage sludge. A possible mechanism of influent pH acting on anaerobic co-digestion was put forward.

Enhanced Dewaterability of Anaerobically Digested Sludge by In-Situ Free Nitrous Acid Treatment

Abstract:As the protonated form of nitrite, free nitrous acid (FNA) is a renewable chemical that can be produced on site from the anaerobic digestion liquor by nitritation, and has been widely employed to improve the fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS). However, it is not clear whether and how FNA improves the dewaterability of anaerobically digested sludge (ADS). This work therefore aims to provide such supports through comparing the dewaterability of ADS treated by nitrite at different concentrations (0-250 mg/L) under three pH values (5.5, 6.3, or 7.2). Environmental results showed that nitrite was completely denitrified within 12 h, and its addition improved the dewaterability of ADS in all the cases. The optimal normalized capillary suction time of 18.0 +/- 0.4 s L/g VSS was obtained at nitrite 50 mg/L and pH 5.5 (equivalent of 0.35 mg/L FNA) in comparison with corresponding value of 23.2 +/- 0.4 s L/g. VSS at pH 5.5 (equivalent of 0 mg/L FNA). Under this scenario, 80.5% +/- 2.0% of water content was obtained in the FNA-treated sample after press filtration while the corresponding value was 88.5% +/- 1.7% in the control. The mechanism investigations showed that FNA treatment reduced surface negative charge of ADS flocs and caused disruption of extracellular polymeric substances and release of intracellular substances, which enhanced the flocculability, hydrophobicity, and flowability, but decreased the bound water content, fractal dimension, and viscosity of ADS. Additionally, FNA treatment altered the secondary structure of proteins through destroying the hydrogen bond, which led to a loose structure of protein, benefiting the exposure of hydrophobic sites or groups in EPS proteins. The findings obtained deepen our understanding of FNA affecting sludge dewatering and provide strong supports to sustainable operation of wastewater treatment plants. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) plays an important role in anaerobic wastewater treatment processes, and the dosage of conductive materials can enhance DIET. In this study, tryptone and starch were used to acclimate anaerobic sludge with different microbial communities. Then, the effect of ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) dosage on batch anaerobic treatment of synthetic wastewater was examined. During methanogenesis for the tryptone acclimated anaerobic sludge, the lag phase was shortened, and the maximum methane (CH4) production rate was increased with the dosage of Fe3O4. While for the starch acclimated anaerobic sludge, the CH4 production was less affected by the dosage of Fe3O4. Furthermore, the dosage of Fe3O4 had limited effects on both hydrolysis/acidification of tryptone and methanogenesis of acetate for the tryptone acclimated anaerobic sludge. Methanosarcina (66.28% of archaea) and Methanosaeta (19.56% of archaea) were detected methanogens in the tryptone acclimated anaerobic sludge, which could accept electrons via DIET. While Methanobacterium (92.80% of archaea) was mainly detected in the starch acclimated anaerobic sludge. Therefore, the effect of Fe3O4 on anaerobic treatment performance was significantly dependent on the organic carbon acclimated microbial communities.
Enhancing post aerobic digestion of full scale anaerobically digested sludge using free nitrous acid pretreatment

Abstract:Post aerobic digestion of anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) has been extensively applied to the wastewater treatment plants to enhance sludge reduction. However, the degradation of ADS in the post aerobic digester itself is still limited. In this work, an innovative free nitrous acid (HNO2 or FNA)-based pretreatment approach is proposed to improve full-scale ADS degradation in post aerobic digester. The post aerobic digestion was conducted by using an activated sludge to aerobically digest ADS for 4 days. Degradations of the FNA-treated (treated at 1.0 and 2.0 mg N/L for 24 h) and untreated ADSs were then determined and compared. The ADS was degraded by 26% and 32%, respectively, in the 4-day post aerobic digestion period while being pretreated at 1.0 and 2.0 mg HNO2–N/L. In comparison, only 20% of the untreated ADS was degraded. Economic analysis demonstrated that the implementation of FNA pretreatment can be economically favourable or not depending on the sludge transport and disposal cost.
Free Ammonia Pretreatment to Enhance Biodegradation of Anaerobically Digested Sludge in Post Aerobic Digestion

Abstract:In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), sludge reduction was implemented via sequential anaerobic-aerobic digestion. However, the performance of post aerobic digestion for anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) is limited. Free ammonia (FA)-based pretreatment technology is proposed in this study as an innovative method to enhance the degradation efficiency of post aerobic digestion for ADS. Pretreatment using FA at >440 mg NH3-N/L for 24 h significantly increased ADS solubilization. The highest solubilization was reached at 1030 mg NH3-N/L, which (0.12 mg COD/mg VS) is 6 times that (0.02 mg COD/mg VS) of no treatment. The batch experiments of post aerobic digestion demonstrated unpretreated ADS over the 8 days post aerobic digestion was degraded by 18.4%, whereas 31.3-33.6% of the pretreated ADS with FA at 440-1030 mg NH3-N/L was degraded, representing a relative increase of 70-83%. Accordingly, inorganic nitrogen production increased in a similar way. Model analysis results revealed the enhanced ADS degradation was because of the increase in both hydrolysis rate and degradable percentage of ADS. Capillary suction time (CST) tests demonstrated FA-based pretreatment was able to generate ADS with greater dewaterability, as revealed by the decline of normalized CST from 77 s for ADS without pretreatment to 63-74 s for ADS with FA pretreatment at 65-1030 NH3-N/L, with the best ADS dewaterability at 1030 mg NH3-N/L of FA. Economic assessment showed that this FA pretreatment technology could be economically favorable.
Pilot-scale Test on Sludge Stabilization by Using Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion Process

Abstract:In a pilot test system, the self-designed autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) process was used for treatment of urban sewage sludge, with semi-continuous operation. The study was made on the sludge stabilization effect at different solid retention time (SRT), dewatering performance of digested sludge, variation in pH values, and kinetic decay coefficient (K_d). The result shows that the optimal sludge stabilization effect was obtained at SRT of 10 d, the temperature in reactor can be kept at 54-58 ℃, removal rate of volatile suspended solid (VSS) reaches 44.3%, inactivation rate of pathogenic bacteria is 100%, activity of dehydrogenase (DHA) decreases by 88.48%, and outlet sludge comes up to the U.S.Class A sludge standard. The dewatering performance of digested sludge is deteriorated, while pH is increase. It is because that the transformation of organic nitrogen to ammonia nitrogen results in too high concentration of ammonia nitrogen in sludge supernatant; when K_d is 0.329 d~-1 at SRT of 10 d, the concentration of non-degradable VSS is 15.09 g/L.

Abstract:A pilot technological facility of Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) and a two cylinder reactors in series was designed for stabilization of the biosolids, and effect of aeration rate on biosolids stabilization was studied based on on-line Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) monitoring by the way of batch operation. The results showed that too high or too low aeration rate would cause VSS removal rate lowering due to the former leading to heat dissipation to make the reactor's autothermal temperature lowering and the latter affecting the activation of microorganism to make the reactor's temperature lowering. It was discovered that 0.6～1.0m3/h aeration rate had better effect on the sludge with VSS concentration of 46.6g/L, VSS removal rate could reach to 39.2%, trending to stabilization.

Abstract:The rupture of cytoderm and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and competitive inhibition of methanogens are the main bottlenecks for medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production from waste activated sludge (WAS). This study proposes a promising ferrate (Fe (VI))-based technique to enhance MCFAs production from WAS through accelerating WAS disintegration and substrates transformation, and eliminating competitive inhibition of methanogens, simultaneously. Results shows that the maximal MCFAs production attains 8106.3 mg COD/L under 85 mg Fe/g TSS, being 58.6 times that of without Fe (VI) pretreatment. Mechanism exploration reveals that Fe (VI) effectively destroys EPS and cytoderm through electron transfer, reactive oxygen species generation (i.e., OH, O2- and 1O2) and elevated alkalinity, resulting in the transfer of organics from solid to soluble phase and from macromolecules to intermediates. Generation and transformation of intermediates analyses illustrate that Fe (VI) facilitates hydrolysis, acidification and chain elongation (CE) but suppresses methanogenesis, promoting the targeted conversion of intermediates to MCFAs. Also, Fe (VI) pretreatment provides potential electron shuttles for chain elongation. Microbial community and functional genes encoding key enzymes analysis indicates that Fe (VI) screens key microorganisms and up-regulates functional genes expression involved in CE pathways. Overall, this technology avoids methanogens inhibitor addition and stimulates vivianite synthesis during MCFAs production from WAS.
