Abstract:According to the anatomy of cerebrovascular system and the theory of hemodynamics, a lumped parameter model describing the flow in the Willis circle was set up. Considering the electrical equivalent circuit of this model, the governing equations and the method to calculate the dynamic index were proposed. Comparing with the clinical data from Huashang Hospital, most calculating results agreed with the clinical diagnoses. That showed this calulating method may help doctors to confirm their diagnoses.

Abstract:There were some different characteristics between the human cerebral and systemic circulation. The cricle of Willis was a network system with four inputs. In present study, according to Willis anatomical structure, we devised a lumped paramenter model of the circle of Willis with steady flow and its governing equations. After simulating human normal state and some cerebrovascular diseases, we found the results predicted by the theoretical model were in good correspondence with the physiological phenomena. MATHEMATICAL MODEL BASED MOTION VECTOR ESTIMATION OF FLUID FIELD IN ARTIFICIAL HEART

Abstract:We elaborated a mathematical model of motion vector estimation of artificial heart and studied its significance. Based on the physical characters of fluid field, the model presented algorithm model of approximation in limited region, which replaced the classical fluid dynamic equation with the low-order dynamic model. A complete algorithm model was therefore formed through study of the feature of DPIV (Digital particle image velocimetry), in which the optical flow equation was associated with low dynamic model. It overcame some deficiencies in traditional DPIV correlation algorithm, which were time-consuming and liable to false correlation peak values. Furthermore, detail variations of fluid field of the artificial heart could be detected using the first-order approximation method. And all these were difficult to be obtained by the traditional algorithm. Besides these advantages, the motion vector of artificial heart could also be obtained. Finally experimental results of motion vector estimation of artificial heart were shown by use of this model.

Abstract:Dynamics index, which plays an important role in cerebral circulation, will be changed significantly compared with their normal range in many cerebrovascular disease. The geometrical parameters must be calculated by building hemodynamics models. A hemodynamics model with the lumped parameters to describe the cerebral circulation has been set up. The governing equations were obtained and a new method was put forward. The hemodynamics indexes in clinical application were calculated.

Abstract:Based on the lumped parameter model (LPM) of the cardiovascular system, an analytic method is developed to derive its hemodynamics theoretically. As soon as the LPM (a series of differential equations) is solved, the hemodynamics would be obtained immediately. However, because of time-varying ventricular elastance and high order, it is difficult to solve analytically. Through simplifying the LPM, the original biventricular system with continuously varying elastance becomes a single ventricular system with discrete elastance which keeps constant during the systolic or diastolic phase. As a consequence, the original time-varying and high-order system becomes a time-invariant and first-order system during each phase. From the analytic solutions of the simplified system, a set of algebraic equations is carried out. Then the hemodynamics are obtained from the solutions of the algebraic equations. The nature of the algebraic equations is an integral form of the differential equations. A connection between the equations and PV loop is established. All of these equations are deduced based on the idealization of replacing the continuous elastance with the discrete elastance. However, there exist algebraic equations, that can be derived directly from volume conservation, still hold for the case of continuous elastance. As a preliminary application, the method is utilized to deduce the hemodynamics of left heart failure (LHF). The results show that the theoretical hemodynamics of LHF are coincident with simulated results. The analytic method can be generalized to investigate biventricular system. A program for developing a more general framework is presented in the last part.

Abstract:A bond graph model for simulating cardiovascular haemodynamics is proposed. The model is given by an elastance variable description of heart, head and neck circulation, pulmonary circulation, coronary circulation, abdomen circulation and extremity circulation. Also, the carotid baroreflex control mechanism for circulation is embeded. The model responds to sympathetic and vagal activity by modifying systemic peripheral resistance, heart rate and ventricular end-systolic elastance. It is able to simulate the blood pressure and blood flow wave on arbitrary segment of circulation system, subsequently, the cardiovascular parameters such as stroke volume, cardiac output and eject fraction of heart can be computed. The simulation results under physiological condition are in agreement with human physiological experimental data. By modifying the arterial compliance and balance point of barorecpter, the hypertension is simulated and the results are consistent with the pathological features. In conclusion, the model could simulate the performance the cardiovascular system validly.

Abstract:The liver has a unique blood supply system and plays an important role in the human blood circulatory system. Thus, hemodynamic problems related to the liver serve as an important part in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Although estimating parameters in these hemodynamic models is essential to the study of liver models, due to the limitations of medical measurement methods and constraints of ethics on clinical studies, it is impossible to directly measure the parameters of blood vessels in livers. Furthermore, as an important part of the systemic blood circulation, livers' studies are supposed to be in conjunction with other blood vessels. In this article, we present an innovative method to fix parameters of an individual liver in a human blood circulation using non-invasive clinical measurements. The method consists of a 1-D blood flow model of human arteries and veins, a 0-D model reflecting the peripheral resistance of capillaries and a lumped parameter circuit model for human livers. We apply the finite element method in fluid mechanics of these models to a numerical study, based on non-invasive blood related measures of 33 individuals. The estimated results of human blood vessel characteristic and liver model parameters are verified from the perspective of Stroke Value Variation, which shows the effectiveness of our estimation method.

Abstract:Corresponding to human anatomical structure, a bond graph model for cardiovascular circulation system including heart, head and neck circulation, pulmonary circulation, coronary circulation, abdomen circulation and extremity circulation was developed, which comprise of 54 mathematical equations. The blood pressure and blood flow wave on arbitrary site of circulation can be obtained by solving the equations, meanwhile, the stroke volume, cardiac output and eject fraction of heart can be computed. The model achieved the typical physiological parameters such as, systolic/diastolic blood pressure 115/78 mm-Hg, stroke volume 80 mL, cardiac output 5.76 L and eject fraction 64.5%. The simulation results were in agreement with the human physiological experimental data, so that the validity of the model was verified. By adjusting the initial condition parameters of the model, the simulations for pathological features of the cardiovascular system, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and stenosis in left subclavicle artery were implemented, with the results being consistent with human pathological features. Furthermore, the components of the model are composed of identical but independent structures, so the model is flexible to be extended.

Abstract:Blood viscosity is an essential factor in the hemodynamics of microcirculation, thus, for a simulating model of microcirculation it is demanded to estimate the distributions of viscosity over network. Due to the effects of phase separation and Fahraeus-Lindqvist, the models are non-linear and iterative computation is necessary. However, oscillations of viscosity may occur during the simulation, which cause instability in models. This paper proposes a simplified successive over-relaxation (SOR) method to deal with the numerical unstable problem and build a robust model for hemodynamics simulation. A steady-state hemodynamic model was constructed and tested in real networks of rat mesentery. The relaxation factor of 0.5 was proved to be an appropriate selection in most oscillations in simulations. Abstract:An approach is proposed to model hemodynamics in an arteriovenous malformation and its vascular environment during neurosurgical embolization. This approach is based on a combination of the filtration flow model for blood and embolic agent in the malformation and the hydraulic approximation for the vessels surrounding the malformation. The model is described mathematically by a system of integrodifferential hyperbolic equations. The parameters and functions included in the model are determined using clinical data from real patients. Based on this model, the problem of optimal control of multistage embolization was formulated and studied numerically in a special class of controls. Optimal embolization regimes were found for which there is good agreement between the calculated and clinical data. The proposed approach can be used to develop preoperative recommendations about the optimal surgical intervention tactics.

Abstract:A new lumped-parameter model for coronary hemodynamics is developed. This model is developed for the whole coronary network based on CT scans of a patient-specific geometry including the right coronary tree, which is absent in many previous mathematical models. The model adopts the structured tree model boundary conditions similar to the work of Olufsen et al., thus avoiding the necessity of invasive perfusion measurements. In addition, we also incorporated the effects of the head loss at the two inlets of the large coronary arteries for the first time. The head loss could explain the phenomenon of a sudden increase of the resistance at the inlet of coronary vessel. The estimated blood pressure and flow rate results from the model agree well with the clinical measurements. The computed impedances also match the experimental perfusion measurement. The effects of coronary arterial stenosis are considered and the fractional flow reserve and relative flow in the coronary vessels for a stenotic vessel computed in this model show good agreement with published experimental data. It is believed that the approach could be readily translated to clinical practice to facilitate real time clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:The paper aims to examine the hyperbolic system of equations governing one-dimensional haemodynamics and its relevance in analysing blood flow under mechanical influences, with particular emphasis on the impact of altering the angle of the leg axis. Methods and approaches for solving hyperbolic equations have been developed in light of their properties and characteristics. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the interplay between vein pressure, pulse wave velocity, and vascular distension. The study revealed an inverse relationship between vein pressure and pulse wave velocity. A decrease in pulse wave velocity occurs when vein pressure rises, and vice versa. Both real measurements and modelling results confirmed this dependence. The pressure in the veins is between 10.8 and 13.6 kPa, and the speed of the pulse wave is between 0.061 and 0.27 kPa. The agreement between real and model data was high. The modelled venous pressure and pulse wave velocity values are close to the actual values. However, it is essential to acknowledge the limitations of this paper. These limitations include the utilisation of one-dimensional haemodynamic models, which fail to consider the three-dimensional structure of the circulatory system. Additionally, the analysis is restricted to examining changes solely in the leg axis angle. The research helps to clarify the relationship between mechanical actions and haemodynamic parameters. The findings may help research and develop new methods for identifying and treating conditions associated with the cardiovascular system.

Abstract:In this work, a lumped‐parameter Windkessel model of the cardiovascular system that simulates biomechanical parameters of the human physiology is presented. The object‐oriented platform provided by the MATLAB‐based modeling environment SIMSCAPE is employed to compute blood pressures and flows in each heart chamber and at various sites of the vascular tree. The hydraulic domain allows the determination of cardiovascular hemodynamics intuitively from geometrical and mechanical properties of the system, while custom elements model the pumping action of the heart and the effects of respiration on blood flow. The model is validated by comparing predicted hemodynamics with normal physiology during both systole and diastole, demonstrating that changes in arterial pressures with breathing are consistent with reported physiological effects of cardiorespiratory coupling. The capabilities of this platform are explored through two exemplary case studies: i) pressure‐overload heart failure due to aortic constriction, validated in vitro and via finite element analysis, and ii) single‐ventricle Fontan physiology, validated in vitro and compared with the clinical literature. This platform provides a practical tool for the calculation of cardiovascular hemodynamics from hydraulic parameters, enabling the intuitive creation of in silico representations of complex circulatory loops, the planning and optimization of medical interventions, and the prediction of clinically relevant patient‐specific hemodynamics. A lumped‐parameter model of the cardiovascular system is developed to determine cardiovascular hemodynamics from hydraulic parameters in physiological and pathophysiological conditions, including left ventricular pressure overload and single‐ventricle physiology. This provides a practical tool for the simulation of complex circulatory loops, the optimization of medical interventions, and the prediction of patient‐specific hemodynamics of clinical relevance.

Abstract:To investigate the cardiovascular system, mathematical modelling and descriptive-analytical methods may be employed in which the various physiological-geometrical-functional parameters have been included. These parameters have been affected by many factors like apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and capillary bed. The conceptual relationship between heart rate, mean arterial and venous pressures, and ADC has not yet been fully elucidated. Therefore, introducing an appropriate function in the cardiovascular system is necessary for better diagnostics in medical field, which has been addressed here. A complex Fermi function as pseudo-pressure (R ADC ) in terms of mmHg sec ml −1 is proposed to assess the effect of the ADC emanating from the capillary bed on the other parameters of the cardiovascular system. It consists of the baroreflex-feedback mechanism on a scheme of differential equations targeting the uncontrolled non-pulsatile cardiovascular system in which the R ADC function over time is contained. The modified differential equations were simulated using Matlab software. The simulated results were displayed with a reduction in R ADC , the other parameters such as heart rate, mean arterial and venous pressure were increased non-linearly. In general, the diagnostic methods based on the physiological parameters of heart and geometrical structure of blood vessels at various diameters, which might have been characterized, are significant factors in deciding the degree of disease and their proper medical treatment. Our findings may suitably aid in stroke grading and lead to better diagnosis and prediction of estimated recovery time.
A fast approach to estimating Windkessel model parameters for patient-specific multi-scale CFD simulations of aortic flow

Abstract:Hemodynamics in the aorta from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can provide a comprehensive analysis of relevant cardiovascular diseases. Coupling the three-element Windkessel model with the patient-specific CFD simulation to form a multi-scale model is a trending approach to capture more realistic flow fields. However, a set of parameters (e.g., R_c, R_p, and C) for the Windkessel model need to be tuned case by case to reflect patient-specific flow conditions. In this study, we propose a fast approach to estimating these parameters under both physiological and pathological conditions. The approach consists of the following steps: (1) finding geometric resistances for each branch using a steady CFD simulation; (2) using the pattern search algorithm to search the parameter spaces by solving the flow circuit system with the consideration of geometric resistances; (3) performing the multi-scale modeling of aortic flow with the optimized Windkessel model parameters. The method was validated through a series of numerical experiments to show its flexibility and robustness, including physiological and pathological flow distributions at each downstream branch from a healthy aortic geometry or a stenosed geometry. This study demonstrates a flexible and computationally efficient way to capture patient-specific hemodynamics in the aorta, facilitating the personalized biomechanical analysis of aortic flow.

Simulation of Blood Pressure Wave Propagation in A Vessel by One-Dimensional Model

Abstract:The patterns of blood pressure wave propagation and their variations may convey useful information for clinical diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to construct a mathematical model for the vascular system and simulate behavior of blood pressure waves. The model entails a set of governing equations regarding conservation of mass and momentum applied to the vessel. The integral proximal and distal boundary conditions for the model are given in the form of partial differential equations. The model parameters include the length, radius, thickness and elasticity of vessels, blood density and other properties. The model allows investigation of the propagation of blood pressure waves under different physiological and pathological states. Typical pathological states like vessel stiffening, peripheral vessel stenosis and arteriosclerosis are simulated. The model reproduces essential properties of blood pressure wave propagation in a vessel including the forwarding, reflected and dicrotic components on the blood pressure wave. With initial values of the parameters, the model output reaches a steady state in 5-10s. The simulation results show that in the case of peripheral vessel stenosis, the reflected wave shifts forwards and the amplitude of the dicrotic wave is elevated relative to the control. The blood pressure wave transit time is shortened for the simulated arteriosclerosis. These results generally agree with physiological and pathological features of vessels observed in clinical practice. In conclusion, the validity of the developed model in simulating physiological and pathological variations of the blood pressure wave propagation indicates that a one-dimensional cardiovascular model is appropriate and efficient to simulate pressure wave propagation characteristics, may reveal the relevant hemodynamic properties, and offers a good compromise between accuracy and computational cost.

Abstract:In this article, a blood flow model of arteriosclerosis, which is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear slip boundary conditions, is constructed and analyzed. By means of suitable numerical integration approximation for the nonlinear boundary term in this model, a discrete variational inequality for the model based on P-1 - P-1/P-0 stabilized finite elements is proposed. Optimal order error estimates are obtained. Finally, numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the validity of the theoretical analysis and the efficiency of the presented methods. Abstract:Abstract As living standards rise, more and more people are paying attention to their own health, especially issues such as cerebral thrombosis, cerebral infarction, and other cerebral blood flow problems. An accurate simulation of blood flow within cerebral vessels has emerged as a crucial area of research. In this study, we focus on microcirculatory blood flow in ischemic brain tissue and employ a 0D‐1D geometric multi‐scale coupled model to characterize this process. Given the intricate nature of human cerebral vessels, we apply a numerical method combining the finite element method and the third‐order Runge–Kutta method to resolve the coupled model. To enhance computational efficiency, we introduce a fast method based on the reduced‐order extrapolation algorithm. Our numerical example underscores the stability of the method and convergence accuracy to , while significantly improving the accuracy and efficiency of blood flow simulation, making the mechanism analysis more accurate. Additionally, we present examples detailing variations and distribution of intracranial pressure and blood flow in ischemic brain tissue throughout a cardiac cycle. Both reduced vascular compliance and vascular stenosis can have adverse effects on intracranial cerebral pressure and blood flow, leading to insufficient local oxygen supply and negative effects on brain function. Meanwhile, there will also be corresponding changes in volume flow and pulsatile blood pressure.

Abstract:Objective: To study blood flow in cardiovascular system, laying a basic foundation for the development of non-invasive continuous blood pressure measuring system, a low-stage model of cardiovascular system has been developed in the article. Methods: Regard the whole cardiovascular system as one chamber based on Windkessel theory, and construct a one-stage Simulink model, while parameters of the model for people under different conditions are estimated by practical measurement, such as Doppler and Korotkoff's Sound Measure. Results: Different blood pressures are taken when varied parameters, which are in accordance with physiological facts. Conclusion: The structure of the model is useful, and it can mimic blood flow in cardiovascular system, and simulate this system under different physiological conditions, further researching can be taken according to it.
