Abstract:Despite the vital role of heterojunction construction in optimizing the performance of the MOS-based gas sensor, the one-step synthesis of uniformly dispersed miniaturized heterostructures remains a challenge. In this study, bimetallic MOFs Ni-Fe PBA of small size (about 75 nm) was prepared by a simple coprecipitation method. Taking it as the self-sacrificial model, we obtained NiO/NiFe2O4 nanocubes with porous, small-sized, uniform distributed heterostructure (about 56 nm). The gas-sensitive test results show that the NiO/NiFe2O4 materials exhibit p-type gas-sensitive behavior and have good gas-sensitive property to a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) gases (acetone, ethyl acetate, aniline, triethylamine, ethanol, formaldehyde, toluene, and trimethylamine). In particular, the NiO/NiFe2O4 sensor has fast response/recovery characteristics to 100 ppm VOCs gases at low operating temperature (170 °C), and the response/recovery times of several representative VOCs such as acetone, ethyl acetate, triethylamine and toluene were 12.8 s/15.6 s, 26 s/15.8 s, 11.2 s/14.4 s, 19.6 s/31.8 s, respectively. The superior response of porous NiO/NiFe2O4 nanocubes towards VOCs is attributed to the large specific surface area of the porosity and the uniformly dispersed heterostructure, which facilitate gas transport and exposure of active sites.

Abstract:We report a novel core-shell NiO spheres with a three-layer structure for gas sensors which exhibit a higher response, rapid response/recovery rate, and nice reproducibility. The gas sensitivity test results showed that NiO-12 h with a three-layer structure obtained a gas response of 35.4, a response/recovery time of 13/9.8 s, to 200 ppm ethanol at 350°C. The enhancement of gas sensing performance gave credit to the special core-shell structure and the more OV and OC. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the core-shell structure was analyzed and we found that the formation of the core-shell structure was closely related to the reaction time. This work not only gave a solution for improving the gas sensing performance of the gas sensors based on NiO, but provided an analysis of the growth mechanism of the core-shell structure.

Abstract:A facile method was applied to prepare NiO nanoparticles/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. It was indicated that NiO nanoparticles with size of 10–30 nm were tightly decorated on the MWCNTs. A chemoresistive gas sensor using NiO nanoparticles/MWCNTs nanocomposite as sensitive material was fabricated on an alumina tube with Au electrodes and platinum wires. The gas-sensing properties of NiO nanoparticles/MWCNTs nanocomposite were evaluated for volatile organic compound vapors (VOCs). The electrical resistance is found to be dramatically decreased by three orders of magnitude compared to a sensor based on NiO nanoparticles free MWCNTs. The highest response values of the nanocomposite were obtained at operating temperature of 180 °C. NiO/MWCNTs sensor shows much better performance compared to the NiO sensor and the VOCs responses are found to be several times higher than that of a NiO nanoparticles sensor.

Abstract:Flower-like NiO hierarchical architectures were synthesized by a solvothermal process without using any other surfactant. Absolute ethanol and distilled water were adopted as solvent, and nickel nitrate hexahydrate was employed as the nickel source. The morphology and crystal structure were mainly investigated. Through annealing the as-obtained products, flower-like NiO hierarchical architectures with a cubic structure were synthesized, which were assembled by a number of thin nanosheets with a thickness of about 30 nm. The formaldehyde gas sensing measurements showed that well-defined NiO flower-like structures with large surface area exhibited higher responses compared with microsheets/nanosheets at a relatively lower operating temperature of 200 C. Moreover, a reversible and fast response to formaldehyde gas at various gas concentrations, good selectivity and stability were obtained. The results indicated that the flower-like NiO hierarchical architectures are promising materials for gas sensors.

Abstract:Semiconductor metal oxides have attracted wide attention in the area of gas sensor due to that they have unique advantages in the rapid and accurate detection of harmful gases. A simple strategy is to synthesize porous NiO hollow microspheres via a simple hydrothermal method with trisodium citrate as structure guide agent is presented in this paper, and the shell of the microsphere is composed of porous and lamellar assembly units. The cavity proportion can be adjusted by changing the amount of trisodium citrate. A reasonable mechanism was proposed to explain the formation of porous NiO hollow microspheres. As a gas-sensing material, porous NiO hollow microspheres show excellent gas selectivity and rapid response recovery time for n-butyl alcohol gas. When the content of trisodium citrate was 0.10 g, the synthesized hollow sphere NiO had the highest response value (25.6) to 100 × 10–6 of n-butyl alcohol at 300 °C and the response and recovery times were only 68 and 10 s.
One-pot Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nano-Sheet Assembled NiO/ZnO Microspheres for Efficient Sulfur Dioxide Detection

Abstract:The nano-sheet assembled NiO/ZnO microspheres with a diameter of ca. 2 mu m have been synthesized via facile hydrothermal method followed by a thermal treatment process. The gas-sensing measurement results show that the sensor using nano-sheet assembled NiO/ZnO microspheres exhibits improved response to sulfur dioxide gas compared with the pure ZnO microspheres sensor. In particular, the sensor with a Ni/Zn molar ratio of 0.5 (0.5 mol% NiO/ZnO) shows high response value (S = 107) and superior selectivity to 10 ppm sulfur dioxide at a low operating temperature of 160 degrees C and the detection limit of the NiO/ZnO sensor toward sulfur dioxide is down to 1 ppm (S = 6). The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunctions on the interface, the catalytic function of NiO and the three-dimensional microspheres composed of the lamellar structure with a large specific surface area. The three-dimensional microspheres provide more active sites for gas adsorption, and the interlayer gap facilitates the diffusion of gas in three-dimensional structure, resulting in high sensitivity and superior selectivity. This work provides a simple method for the synthesis of NiO/ZnO heterojunction microspheres with superior gas-sensing performance, which can be used as a potential material for sulfur dioxide detection.

Abstract:Hierarchical NiO nanomaterials doped by 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 at% Sn2+ ions were synthesized through a facial hydrothermal route. The isovalent Sn2+ ions were selected as dopants and occupied the interstitial spaces of NiO lattice. Such obtained NiO specimens were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) etc. and used as sensing materials for gas sensors. The comparative sensing property tests among these Sn2+ doped NiO sensors demonstrated that 1.5 at% Sn2+-NiO microspheres showed the highest response (similar to 25.2 perpendicular to 10%) to 200 ppm xylene, which was about 14-fold higher than that of the pure NiO. Moreover, the humidity-independent performance of the 1.5 at% Sn2+-NiO sample was excellent, such as low detection limit (1.1-500 ppb) and good selectivity toward xylene at high relative humidity (90% RH). In this study, we present a sacrificial template approach for on-chip fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) Ni-doped SnO 2 nanoporous sensing films on micro-heater substrates. The technical analysis shows that the resulting honeycomb-like ultrathin Ni-SnO 2 sensing layer on a suspended substrate maintains perfect structural integrity and consistency. The Ni-SnO 2 sensors exhibit exceptional characteristics, including a ppb-level detection limit, high sensitivity, fast response/recovery time, and signal repeatability for typical VOCs, while operating at a low power consumption of 25 mW. Additionally, the Ni-doping enhances the sensors' cross-sensitivity to various forms of VOCs, while causing a discernible response inhibition towards flammable or exhaust gases. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in-situ Raman spectra reveal a Ni 2+ -substitution induced surface adsorbed oxygen species enrichment mechanism for sensing enhancement. Thus, the developed Ni-SnO 2 sensors hold promise as future candidates for reliable air quality assessment by real-time monitoring of overall concentrations of multiple VOCs.

Fe2O3-loaded NiO Nanosheets for Fast Response/recovery and High Response Gas Sensor

Abstract:Porous Fe2O3-loaded NiO nanosheets were obtained by the thermal decomposition nanosheets of iron element-loaded Ni(OH)(2) synthesized via microwave-assisted liquid-phase synthesis under atmospheric condition. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) N-2 adsorption-desorption analysis were used to characterize the as-prepared products. Gas sensing measurement indicated that the sensor based on the 1.5% Fe2O3-loaded NiO nanosheets exhibits untrafast response speed as well as short recovery time and high responses to ethanol and methanol (the response/recovery time of the gas sensor are 0.5/14.6 s and 0.1/11.4 s with the responses of 170.7 and 107.9-100 ppm ethanol and methanol, respectively). In addition, the 1.5% Fe2O3-loaded NiO nanosheets-based sensor can detect ethanol and methanol at a detection limit of well below 200 ppb (the responses are 6.88 and 6.82-200 ppb ethanol and methanol, respectively). The enhanced sensing behaviors can be attributed to the nanosheet-like structure and n-type Fe2O3/p-type NiO heterojunction. The time-saving method developed by us is easy to control to produce the nano-particulate composites without high experimental requirement and make it possible in commercial applications. Our work may explore a possibility to synthesize nanomaterial with ultrafast responding and fast recovering behaviors for real-time monitoring gas sensor. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Template-free Synthesized Hollow NiO–SnO2 Nanospheres with High Gas-Sensing Performance

Abstract:Hollow NiO–SnO2 nanospheres have been fabricated via a simple one-pot template-free method. The synthesis is based on solvothermal treatment of stannate and nickel nitrate as the precursor in a mixed solvent of heptane–ethanol. The hollow nanospheres show diameters of about 200–300nm with the wall thickness of about 50nm, and the shell consists of numerous small nanoparticles. The gas sensor based on hollow NiO–SnO2 nanospheres exhibits high response and quick response–recovery to NH3, which are much better compared with sensors based on solid NiO–SnO2 nanospheres. The enhanced sensor performances are attributed to the larger surface area and fast gas diffusion.
NiO–ZnO Nanoheterojunction Networks for Room‐Temperature Volatile Organic Compounds Sensing

Abstract:Engineering of highly performing nanomaterials, capable of rapid detection of trace concentrations of gas molecules at room temperature, is key to the development of the next generation of miniaturized chemical sensors. Here, a highly performing nanoheterojunctions layout is presented for the rapid room‐temperature chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds down to ten particles per billion concentrations. The layout consists of a 3D network of nickel oxide–zinc oxide (NiO–ZnO) p–n semiconductors with grain size of ≈20 nm nanometers and a porosity of ≈98%. Notably, it is observed that the formation of the p–n heterojunctions by decoration of a ZnO nanoparticle networks with NiO increases the sensor response by more than four times while improving the lower limit of detection. Under solar light irradiation, the optimal NiO–ZnO nanoheterojunction networks demonstrate a strong and selective room‐temperature response to two important volatile organic compounds utilized for breath analysis, namely acetone and ethanol. Furthermore, these NiO–ZnO nanoheterojunctions show an inverse response to acetone from that observed for all others reducing gas molecules (i.e., ethanol, propane, and ethylbenzene). It is believed that these novel insights of the optoelectrochemical properties of ultraporous nanoheterojunction networks provide guidelines for the future design of low‐power solid‐state chemical sensors.

Abstract:In this work, the novel NiO nanoflowers were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Through X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, we can confirm that we have prepared high purity NiO and can observe that both nanoflowers are formed by self-assembly of thin nanosheets. Because of the novel morphology, sparsely NiO nanoflowers have a large specific surface area and form more enclosed micro-reaction chambers that make it difficult for gas to escape. Allowing gas molecules to be more widely distributed among the sparsely sample surface and obtained fully reaction time. Thus, the gas sensor based on compactly NiO nanoflowers exhibits excellent response and recovery characteristic.

Abstract:In this work, we report on the use of bubbles as a template, can adopt a slight hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination synthesized NiO hollow sphere successfully, and then control the reaction time and temperature conditions to form two different NiO surface. It was found that the fluffy structure with pores and the flower-like structure with nanometer plate. The results show that NiO with hollow sphere has excellent performance in gas sensing test and its special surface has high specific surface area, which has good response sensitivity to 400 ppm C2H5OH. So, it is a promising sensing material for detection of C2H5OH. In addition, based on the experimental results, we also proposed that the evolution mechanism about NiO hollow spheres and the gas sensitive mechanism on the surface of microspheres.

Abstract:SnO2 nanospheres with a diameter of about 150 nm were synthesized by a hydrotherrnal method. They were assembled by numerous tetragonal nanocubes with an average size of 8 nm. Since the morphology of nanospheres agglomerated by nanocubes, the modulations of quantum confinement and large contact area were realized; this would serve as the basis for high sensitivity. The sensors based on the as-synthesized nanospheres showed good selectivity among different gases and superior sensitivity to ethanol compare with previous reports. The sensitivity could reach 53 to 50 ppm ethanol at a relatively low working temperature of 275 degrees C. A possible mechanism was proposed, which could be primarily related to the large surface-to-volume ratio and the small size effect of nanocubes. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.

Abstract:Hollow spheres are usually fabricated by hard template methods or soft template methods with soft surfactants, which is quiet tedious and time-consuming. In this paper, NiO hollow spheres with fluffy surface were successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination, where bubbles acted as the template. NiO hollow spheres exhibited excellent gas sensing performances, which results from its hollow structure and high specific surface area. In addition, a possible evolution mechanism of NiO hollow spheres was proposed based on experimental results.

Abstract:Semiconductor oxides with hierarchically hollow architecture can provide significant advantages as sensing materials for gas sensors by facilitating the diffusion of target gases. Herein, we develop a facile template-free solvothermal strategy combined with the subsequent thermal treatment process toward the successful synthesis of novel ZnFe2O4 hollow flower-like microspheres. The images of electron microscopy unambiguously indicated that the ZnFe2O4 nanosheets with thickness of around 20 nm assembled hierarchically to form the unique flower-like architecture. As a proof-of-concept demonstration of the function, the as-prepared product was utilized as sensing material for gas sensor. Significantly, in virtue of the porous shell structure, hollow interior, and large surface area, ZnFe2O4 hierarchical microspheres exhibited high response, excellent cyclability, and long-term stability to acetone at the operating temperature of 215 °C.
Synthesis of porous flower-like SnO2/CdSnO3 microstructures with excellent sensing performances for volatile organic compounds

Abstract:Porous flower-like SnO 2 /CdSnO 3 microstructures self-assembled by uniform nanosheets were synthesized using a hydrothermal process followed by calcination, and the sensing performance was measured when a gas sensor, based on such microstructures, was exposed to various volatile organic compound (VOC) gases. The response value was found to reach as high as 100.1 when the SnO 2 /CdSnO 3 sensor was used to detect 100 ppm formaldehyde gas, much larger than those of other tested VOC gases, indicating the high gas sensitivity possessed by this sensor especially in the detection of formaldehyde gas. Meanwhile, the response/recovery process was fast with the response time and recovery time of only 13 and 21 s, respectively. The excellent gas sensing performance derive from the advantages of SnO 2 /CdSnO 3 , such as abundant n–n heterojunctions built at the interface, high available specific surface area, abundant porosity, large pore size, and rich reactive oxygen species, as well as joint effects arising from SnO 2 and CdSnO 3 , suggesting that such porous flower-like SnO 2 /CdSnO 3 microstructures composed of nanosheets have a high potential for developing gas sensors.

Abstract:Nanoparticle packed In2O3 nanospheres are successfully synthesized via a facile one-step solvothermal method followed by annealing. The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized samples are characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the NO2 gas sensing properties of the nanoparticle packed In2O3 nanospheres are further investigated. The sensor shows excellent selectivity, high response (217.5 to 500 ppb), superior stability and repeatability at the optimum operating temperature of 120 degrees C with a limit of detection lower than 10 ppb. Thus, this type of material is promising for low concentration NO2 gas-sensing.
