Abstract:Single longitudinal mode and single polarization are basic requirements of high performance fiber lasers, while their realizations are nontrivial, owing to the long laser cavity and lack of polarization selection of ordinary optical fibers. Here, we demonstrate an all-fiber narrow-linewidth laser realized on an external high-Q fiber ring, with combined functions of single-longitude-mode selection and linewidth reduction. A single-longitude-mode laser with a high polarization extinction ratio of ∼40dB and low white frequency noise at 0.3Hz2/Hz is achieved, corresponding to a fundamental linewidth of ∼0.92Hz. Using all non-polarization fiber components and ordinary gain fiber, our scheme shows the realization of narrow-linewidth single-polarization fiber lasers in a simple and cost-effective way, promising for broadband applications.

Abstract:We proposed a short-linear-cavity (SLC) fiber laser based on a virtual-folded-ring (VFR) resonator and a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot filter. Spatial hole burning effect was reduced by retarding the polarization state of the counter-propagating light waves utilizing the VFR structure. The photon lifetime of the resonator was extended due to the multi-reflection inside the FBG FP, which increased the intra-cavity power and relatively suppressed the contribution of phase diffusion from spontaneous emission. The relaxation oscillation frequency is around 160 kHz due to the slow light effect. The linewidth of the SLC fiber laser was measured to be less than 600 Hz.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:This work proposes and experimentally demonstrates a high-performance polarization space parity-time (PT) symmetric fiber ring laser to achieve a low-noise, narrow-linewidth, and highly stable single-longitudinal-mode output. The gain/loss and coupling coefficients are regulated by adjusting a polarization controller (PC) and the pumping current of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) within the ring cavity. The results show that the single longitudinal mode oscillation of the laser can be implemented by PT symmetry breaking. The frequency noise spectral density and the linewidth characteristics of the laser are evaluated by the short-delay self-heterodyne method. The results reveal that excellent low-frequency noise (181 Hz2/Hz at a 10 kHz offset frequency) and narrow fundamental linewidth (68 Hz) can be achieved. Additionally, the laser exhibits outstanding stability with only 0.64 pm wavelength drift over 30 min. By tuning an optical tunable filter (OTF), the wavelength tunable range of the laser can cover the entire C-band. Furthermore, the impacts of different fiber length on the frequency noise spectral density and the filter bandwidth on stability are analyzed, offering guidance for component selection in such laser systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate an all-fiber linearly polarized fiber laser oscillator. The single polarization of the oscillator is achieved through the careful designing of the active fiber coiling. The relationship between fiber coiling diameter and polarization extinction ratio and optical efficiency is studied, whose results lead to an optimized system. The thermal management of the oscillator is also refined, which allows the oscillator to reach a maximum output power of 44.1 W with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 57.9%. A high average polarization extinction ratio of 21.6 dB is achieved during a 2-hour stability test. The oscillator also owns a narrow 3-dB bandwidth of 0.1 nm, as well as near-diffraction-limit beam quality of M-2 similar to 1.14.

Abstract:A novel linearly frequency modulated narrow linewidth single-frequency phosphate fiber laser has been demonstrated. The output power of the laser is more than 40 mW. A maximum frequency excursion of more than 700 MHz at the modulating bandwidth of 1 kHz has been achieved. Single longitudinal mode operation under modulation is confirmed and the linewidth of the laser is measured to be less than 2 kHz. This type of laser source shows real promise for applications in coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry.

Abstract:We report on an experimental study of a stabilized single-mode, linearly polarized, erbium-doped fiber laser with an unique structure of double-cavities. In its linear cavity, the effect of spatial-hole burning (SHB) is eliminated to prevent multi-longitudinal-mode oscillation by using 45° Faraday rotator mirror, meanwhile, in its another polarization maintaining ring cavity, the effect of SHB induced by a stable external light and the lasing light is enhanced efficiently to suppress the mode-hopping by the polarization state control method. Consequently, a single-mode, linearly polarized operation is demonstrated with the lasing frequency shift of less than 20MHz, its linewidth less than 3.5 kHz and the degree of polarization of 99. 9%.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a mode-locked fiber laser generating cylindrical vector beams based on an allpolarization-maintaining fiber structure. The radially polarized mode (TM01 mode) with a mode purity of 92.4% has been achieved by the principle of mode superposition. And the self-starting mode-locked pulse operate at 1067.01 nm with a spectral width of 0.069 nm at 3 dB based on a semiconductor-saturable absorber mirror. Stable pluse train with a repetition rate of 40.83 MHz, signal to noise ratio of 53 dB and pulse duration of 74.82 ps has been obtained. This laser has the advantages of compact structure and high stability, which may have the potential in practical application.

Abstract:Due to the weak birefringence from the intracavity fiber, vector solitons are easily generated in GHz-fundamental-repetition-rate mode-locked fiber lasers, which can exhibit diverse time-varying polarization dynamics. These soliton dynamics can lead to polarization instability of the pulse train, which prevents industrial and scientific applications that require stable and uniform pulse trains. However, it is hard to suppress the polarization instability due to insufficient space for inserting traditional polarizers and difficulties in enhancing the fiber birefringence in the ultrashort fiber laser cavity. To this end, here we propose an alternative method that can effectively transform the vector solitons into scalar solitons by exploring gold nanorod (GNR) film as a polarizer in the laser cavity. First, the theoretical studies of polarization dynamics in ultrashort Fabry–Pérot (FP) fiber lasers with and without intracavity GNR film are conducted. The results indicate that the use of GNR film can significantly suppress the polarization instability and generate scalar solitons. Then, the large-scale preparation of GNRs with longitudinal surface plasmon resonance absorption peak of >1380 nm is realized by a two-step seed-mediated method, and the GNR film with an operation wavelength range covering the C + L band is fabricated by electrospinning. Finally, we apply the GNR film to a 2-cm-long FP fiber laser, and convert polarization rotation vector solitons to linearly polarized solitons (LPSs) at 1.5 μm. The polarization extinction ratio of the improved LPS pulse train is up to 33 dB.

Abstract:Pulsed polarized vortex beams, a special form of structured light, are generated by tailoring the light beam spatiotemporally and witness the growing application demands in nonlinear optics such as ultrafast laser processing and surface plasma excitation. However, existing techniques for generating polarized vortex beams suffer from either low compactness due to the use of bulky components or limited controlment of pulse performance. Here, an all-fiber technique combining plasmonic metafibers with mode conversion method is harnessed to generate high-performance pulsed polarized vortex beams. Plasmonic metafibers are utilized as saturable absorbers to produce Q-switched pulses with micro-second duration, while the offset splicing method is employed to partially convert the fundamental transverse mode (LP ) to higher-order mode (LP ). Eventually, a polarized vortex beams laser is achieved at the telecom band with a repetition frequency of 116.0 kHz. The impact of geometrical parameters including period of metafibers and offset of splicing on the spatiotemporal properties of pulsed polarized vortex beams is systematically investigated. Our findings could pave the way for design, control and generation of all-fiber pulsed polarized vortex beams, and also offer insights into the development of other types of structured laser sources.

Abstract:An ultra-narrow linewidth full C-band tunable single-frequency linear-polarization fiber laser based on self-injection locking has been demonstrated. By the use of a tunable narrow-band fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer, the laser wavelength could be flexibly tuned from 1527 to 1563 nm with linewidths of < 700 Hz. The laser frequency noise is less than 40 dB re Hz/Hz1/2 at low frequencies (< 100 Hz) and reaches -5 dB re Hz/Hz1/2 at around 25 kHz. The measured relative intensity noise (RIN) is less than -130 dB/Hz with regard to frequencies of over 3 MHz, while the obtained linear polarization extinction ratio (LPER) is higher than 28 dB. This ultra-narrow linewidth low-noise tunable single-frequency linear-polarization fiber laser provides a promising candidate for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) optical communication system.

Abstract:By reason of the special intensity profile, the flat-top beam is applied in numerous fields. Utilizing fiber laser to generate the flat-top beam with excellent beam quality is gradually becoming a hot research topic in recent years. In this work, we propose a novel fiber laser that emits mode-locked pulse flat-top beam by the incoherent superposition of cylindrical vector modes (TM01) and fundamental modes (LP01). The beam obtained in our laser has a normalized root mean square (NRMS) of 0.127 and a steep degree Omega of 0.87 meaning the favorable effect of the experiment result. As far as we know, this laser is the first mode-locked pulse flat-top beam laser based on all polarization-maintaining fiber structure.

Abstract:A single-frequency linearly polarization pulsed fiber laser based on an electro-optic modulator with injection seeding technique is demonstrated. The single-frequency performance of the fiber ring-cavity laser is guaranteed by the seed source, which is a distributed-feedback fiber laser based on the π-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating. The electro-optic modulator triggers active Q-switching of the laser for pulse generation. The devices used in the fiber laser are all polarization-maintaining to ensure linear polarization laser output. Through parameter optimization, the laser generates a single-frequency linearly polarization pulsed laser with a central wavelength of 1064.22 nm, linewidth of 35 MHz, and polarization extinction ratio of better than 40 dB. This type of fiber laser can be applied in lidar, beam combining, nonlinear frequency conversion, and other fields.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a switchable dual wavelength fiber ring laser with a high degree of polarization output by using an intracavity 3-stage all fiber Lyot filter. The filter is formed by concatenating four 45° tilted fiber gratings separated by polarization maintaining fibers with a length ratio of 1:2:4 (20, 40, and 80 cm), giving a compact integrated configuration with reduced bandwidth. Switchable dual wavelength or single wavelength output at 1533.5 and 1563.3 nm has been achieved. The output lasing is considerably stable owing to the in-phase mode-selecting function of the multistage Lyot filter, and has a very high degree of polarization higher than 99.9%.
