Abstract:Given a closed $n$-manifold, we consider the set of simple homotopy types of $n$-manifolds within its homotopy type, called its simple homotopy manifold set. We characterise it in terms of algebraic $K$-theory, the surgery obstruction map, and the homotopy automorphisms of the manifold. We use this to construct the first examples, for all $n \ge 4$ even, of closed $n$-manifolds that are homotopy equivalent but not simple homotopy equivalent. In fact, we construct infinite families with pairwise the same properties, and our examples can be taken to be smooth for $n \geq 6$. Our key examples are homotopy equivalent to the product of a circle and a lens space. We analyse the simple homotopy manifold sets of these manifolds, determining exactly when they are trivial, finite, and infinite, and investigating their asymptotic behaviour. The proofs involve integral representation theory and class numbers of cyclotomic fields. We also compare with the relation of $h$-cobordism, and produce similar detailed quantitative descriptions of the manifold sets that arise.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Abstract:We define higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a mathematical theory of sigma model coupled with gravity over any semi-positive symplectic manifolds. As applications, we verify the stablizing conjecture of symplectic 4-manifolds for simply connected elliptic surfaces and construct smooth 6-manifolds admitting infinitely many deformation classes of symplectic structures.

Abstract:Higher index of signature operator is a far reaching generalization of signature of a closed oriented manifold. When two closed oriented manifolds are homotopy equivalent, one can define a secondary invariant of the relative signature operator called higher rho invariant. The higher rho invariant detects the topological nonrigidity of a manifold. In this paper, we prove product formulas for higher index and higher rho invariant of signature operator on fibered manifolds. Our result implies the classical product formula for numerical signature of fiber manifolds obtained by Chern, Hirzebruch, and Serre in "On the index of a fibered manifold". We also give a new proof of the product formula for higher rho invariant of signature operator on product manifolds, which is parallel to the product formula for higher rho invariant of Dirac operator on product manifolds obtained by Xie and Yu in "Positive scalar curvature, higher rho invariants and localization algebras" and Zeidler in "Positive scalar curvature and product formulas for secondary index invariants".

Abstract:The étale homotopy groups of schemes as defined by Artin and Mazur have the disadvantage of being homotopy invariant only in characteristic zero. This and other related problems led to the definition of the tame topology which is coarser than the étale topology by disallowing wild ramification along the boundary of compactifications. The object of this paper is to show that the associated tame homotopy groups are indeed ($\mathbb{A}^1$-)homotopy invariant, at least for regular schemes.

Simple homotopy invariance of the loop coproduct

Abstract:We prove a transformation formula for the Goresky-Hingston loop coproduct in string topology under homotopy equivalences of manifolds. The formula involves the trace of the Whitehead torsion of the homotopy equivalence. In particular, it implies that the loop coproduct is invariant under simple homotopy equivalences. In a sense, our results determine the Dennis trace of the simple homotopy type of a closed manifold from its framed configuration spaces of $\leq 2$ points. We also explain how the loop coproduct arises as a secondary operation in a 2-dimensional TQFT which elucidates a topological origin of the transformation formula.

Higher-order signature cocycles for subgroups of mapping class groups and homology cylinders

Abstract:We define families of invariants for elements of the mapping class group of S, a compact orientable surface. Fix any characteristic subgroup H of pi_1(S) and restrict to J(H), any subgroup of mapping classes that induce the identity modulo H. To any unitary representation, r of pi_1(S)/H we associate a higher-order rho_r-invariant and a signature 2-cocycle sigma_r. These signature cocycles are shown to be generalizations of the Meyer cocycle. In particular each rho_r is a quasimorphism and each sigma_r is a bounded 2-cocycle on J(H). In one of the simplest non-trivial cases, by varying r, we exhibit infinite families of linearly independent quasimorphisms and signature cocycles. We show that the rho_r restrict to homomorphisms on certain interesting subgroups. Many of these invariants extend naturally to the full mapping class group and some extend to the monoid of homology cylinders based on S.

Pseudo-timelike loops in signature changing semi-Riemannian manifolds with a transverse radical

Abstract:In 1983, Hartle and Hawking introduced a conceptually intriguing idea involving signature-type change, which led to the no-boundary proposal for the initial conditions of the universe. According to this proposal, the universe has no beginning because there is no singularity or boundary in spacetime; however, there is an origin of time. Mathematically, this entails signature-type changing manifolds where a Riemannian region smoothly transitions to a Lorentzian region at the surface where time begins. We present a coherent framework for signature-type changing manifolds characterized by a degenerate yet smooth metric. We then adapt firmly established Lorentzian tools and results to the signature-type changing scenario, introducing new definitions that carry unforeseen causal implications. A noteworthy consequence is the presence of locally closed time-reversing loops through each point on the hypersurface. By imposing the constraint of global hyperbolicity on the Lorentzian region, we demonstrate that for every point $p\in M$, there exists a pseudo-timelike loop with point of self-intersection $p$. Or put another way, there always exists a closed pseudo-timelike path in $M$ around which the direction of time reverses, and a consistent designation of future-directed and past-directed vectors cannot be defined.

Abstract:Let $X$ and $Y$ be spaces and $M$ be an abelian group. A homotopy invariant $f\colon [X,Y]\to M$ is called straight if there exists a homomorphism $F\colon L(X,Y)\to M$ such that $f([a])=F(\langle a\rangle)$ for all $a\in C(X,Y)$. Here $\langle a\rangle\colon\langle X\rangle\to\langle Y\rangle$ is the homomorphism induced by $a$ between the abelian groups freely generated by $X$ and $Y$ and $L(X,Y)$ is a certain group of `admissible' homomorphisms. We show that all straight invariants can be expressed through a `universal' straight invariant of homological nature.

Abstract:For a bundle of oriented closed smooth $n$-manifolds $\pi: E \to X$, the tautological class $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k} (E) \in H^{4k-n}(X;\mathbb{Q})$ is defined by fibre integration of the Hirzebruch class $\mathcal{L}_k (T_v E)$ of the vertical tangent bundle. More generally, given a discrete group $G$, a class $u \in H^p(B G;\mathbb{Q})$ and a map $f:E \to B G$, one has tautological classes $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k ,u}(E,f) \in H^{4k+p-n}(X;\mathbb{Q})$ associated to the Novikov higher signatures. For odd $n$, it is well-known that $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k}(E)=0$ for all bundles with $n$-dimensional fibres. The aim of this note is to show that the question whether more generally $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k,u}(E,f)=0$ (for odd $n$) depends sensitively on the group $G$ and the class $u$. For example, given a nonzero cohomology class $u \in H^2 (B \pi_1 (\Sigma_g);\mathbb{Q})$ of a surface group, we show that always $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k,u}(E,f)=0$ if $g \geq 2$, whereas sometimes $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k,u}(E,f)\neq 0$ if $g=1$. The vanishing theorem is obtained by a generalization of the index-theoretic proof that $\kappa_{\mathcal{L}_k}(E)=0$, while the nontriviality theorem follows with little effort from the work of Galatius and Randal-Williams on diffeomorphism groups of even-dimensional manifolds.

Abstract:Given a $C^{1+\beta}$ flow $\varphi$ with positive speed on a closed smooth Riemannian manifold, we code two homoclinically related $\varphi$-invariant probabilities by an irreducible countable topological Markov flow. As an application, we give proofs using symbolic dynamics of the theorem of Knieper on the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy and theorems of Burns et al on the uniqueness of equilibrium states.

Abstract:We show that there is a topology on the group of loops in euclidean space such that this group is embedded in a Lie group which is simple relative to the loops. An extension of this Lie group gives the structural group of a principal bundle with connection whose holonomy coincides with the Chen signature map. We also give an alternative geometric new proof of Chen signature Theorem.

Abstract:This paper deals with the representations of the fundamental groups of compact surfaces with boundary into classical simple Lie groups of Hermitian type. We relate work on the signature of the associated local systems of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer, to Burger-Iozzi-Wienhard's Toledo invariant. To measure the difference, we extend Atiyah-Patodi-Singer's rho invariant, initially defined on $\mathrm{U}(p)$, to discontinuous class functions, first on $\mathrm{U}(p,q)$, and then on other classical groups via embeddings into $\mathrm{U}(p,q)$. In this way, we present three different invariants -- signature, Toledo and rho invariant -- in a unifying way, which is a version of the classical signature formula of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with non-ellipticity. We can define an almost Kähler structure on $M$ by using the given symplectic form. Hence, we have a $\G=\pi_1(M)$-invariant almost Kähler structure on the universal covering, $\ti M$, of $M$. Using Darboux coordinate charts, we globally deform the given almost Kähler structure on $\ti M$ off a Lebesgue measure zero subset to obtain a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on $\ti M$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to the given almost Kähler structure. Analogous to Teleman's $L^2$-Hodge decomposition on PL manifolds or Lipschitz Riemannian manifolds, we give a $L^2$-Hodge decomposition theorem on $\ti M$ with respect to the Lipschitz Kähler flat metric. Using an argument of Gromov, we give a vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $p$-forms, $p\not=n$ (resp. a non-vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $n$-forms) on $\ti M$, then the signed Euler characteristic satisfies $(-1)^n\chi(M)\geq0$ (resp. $(-1)^n\chi(M)>0$). Similarly, for any closed even dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$, we can construct a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on the universal covering, $(\ti M, \ti g)$, of $(M, g)$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to and quasi-isometric to the metric $\ti g$. As an application, using Gromov's method we show that the Chern-Hopf conjecture holds true in closed even dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (resp. strictly negative curvature), it gives a positive answer to a Yau's problem due to S. S. Chern and H. Hopf.

Abstract:We investigate the following question: if $A$ and $A'$ are products of finite cyclic groups, when does there exist an isomorphism $f: A \to A'$ which preserves the union of coordinate hyperplanes (equivalently, so that $f(x)$ has some coordinate zero if and only if $x$ has some coordinate zero)? We show that if such an isomorphism exists, then $A$ and $A'$ have the same cyclic factors; if all cyclic factors have order larger than $2$, the map $f$ is diagonal up to permutation, hence sends coordinate hyperplanes to coordinate hyperplanes. Thus one can recover the coordinate hyperplanes from knowledge of their union. This result is well-adapted for application to invariants with a certain multiplicativity property. As a model application, we show using twisted signatures that there exists a family of compact 4-manifolds $X(n)$ with $H_1 X(n) = \mathbb Z/n$ with the property that $\prod X(n_i) \cong \prod X(n'_j)$ if and only if the factors may be identified (up to permutation), and that the induced map on first homology is (up to permutation) represented by a diagonal matrix.

A stable homotopy invariant for Legendrians with generating families

Abstract:We construct a stable homotopy type invariant for any Legendrian submanifold in a jet bundle equipped with a linear-at-infinity generating family. We show that this spectrum lifts the generating family homology groups. When the generating family extends to a generating family for an embedded Lagrangian filling, we lift the Seidel isomorphism to the spectrum level. As applications, we establish topological constraints on Lagrangian fillings arising from generating families, algebraic constraints on whether generating families admit fillings, and lower bounds on how many fiber dimensions are needed to construct a generating family for a Legendrian.

A Transformation Theorem for Transverse Signature-Type Changing Semi-Riemannian Manifolds

Abstract:In the early eighties Hartle and Hawking put forth that signature-type change may be conceptually interesting, paving the way to the so-called 'no boundary' proposal for the initial conditions for the universe. Such singularity-free universes have no beginning, but they do have an origin of time. In mathematical terms, we are dealing with signature-type changing manifolds where a Riemannian region (i.e., a region with a positive definite metric) is smoothly joined to a Lorentzian region at the surface of transition where time begins. We present a transformation prescription to transform an arbitrary Lorentzian manifold into a singular signature-type changing manifold. Then we establish the Transformation Theorem, asserting that, conversely, under certain conditions, such a metric $(M,\tilde{g})$ can be obtained from some Lorentz metric $g$ through the aforementioned transformation procedure. By augmenting the assumption by certain constraints, mutatis mutandis, the global version of the Transformation Theorem can be proven as well. In conclusion, we make use of the Transformation Prescription to demonstrate that the induced metric on the hypersurface of signature change is either Riemannian or a positive semi-definite pseudo metric.
