Abstract:Deals with the stability properties of nonlinear systems subject to slowly varying exogenous signals. First, a well-known stability result of linear time-varying systems is improved. Second, an extended stability theorem is established for nonlinear systems where exogenous signals are slowly-varying in the sense of moving-average. Finally, the application of this extended theorem to automated vehicle platoons is outlined.

Abstract:With the linear matrix inequalities (LMI) method, this paper investigates the stability of a class of hybrid systems with uncertain nonlinear subsystems. Based on single Lyapunov function, the sufficient conditions of this system for global asymptotic stability are proposed. Furthermore, using the method of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function, the sufficient conditions of this system for local asymptotic stability are derived. By applying the result, the sufficient conditions of stability can be formulated as a convex problem in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be solved by relevant software.

Abstract:In this work, we advance in the study of the Lyapunov stability and instability of equilibrium solutions of Hamiltonian flows. More precisely, we study the nonlinear stability in the Lyapunov sense of equilibrium solutions in autonomous Hamiltonian systems with n -degrees of freedom, assuming the existence of two resonance vectors and without interaction ( ). We provide conditions to obtain a type of formal stability, called Lie stability. In particular, we need to normalize the Hamiltonian function to any arbitrary order, and our results take into account the sign of the components of the resonance vectors. Subsequently, we guarantee some sufficient conditions to obtain exponential stability in the sense of Nekhoroshev for Lie stable systems. In addition, we give sufficient conditions for the instability in the Lyapunov sense of the full system. For this, it is necessary to normalize the Hamiltonian function to an adequate order, and assuming that the components of at least one resonance vector change of sign.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the stabilization control design of nonholonomic stochastic system in strict-feedback form. Under the condition of all states being available for feedback, a state feedback controller was developed via the stochastic Lyapunov-like theorem and backstepping design technique. The controllers guarantee all states of the closed-loop system are bounded in probability, and largely asymptotically stable when the stochastic disturbances equal to zero at the equilibrium point of the open-loop system. Besides, the time-varying technique was introduced to avoid the uncontrollable state of chained system.

Abstract:The paper deals with a nonlinear evolution equation describing the dynamics of a non homogeneous multiply hinged beam, subject to a nonlocal restoring force of displacement type. First, a spectral analysis for the associated weighted stationary problem is performed, providing a complete system of eigenfunctions. Then, a linear stability analysis for bi-modal solutions of the evolution problem is carried out, with the final goal of suggesting optimal choices of the density and of the position of the internal hinged points in order to improve the stability of the beam. The analysis exploits both analytical and numerical methods; the main conclusion of the investigation is that non homogeneous density functions improve the stability of the structure.
Linear instability of relative equilibria for $n$-body problems in the plane

Abstract:Following Smale, we study simple symmetric mechanical systems of $n$ point particles in the plane. In particular, we address the question of the linear and spectral stability properties of relative equilibria, which are special solutions of the equations of motion. Our main result is a sufficient condition to detect spectral (hence linear) instability. Namely, we prove that if the Morse index of an equilibrium point with even nullity is odd, then the associated relative equilibrium is spectrally unstable. The proof is based on some refined formulæ for computing the spectral flow. As a notable application of our theorem, we examine two important classes of singular potentials: the $\alpha$-homogeneous one, with $\alpha \in (0, 2)$, which includes the gravitational case, and the logarithmic one. We also establish, for the $\alpha$-homogeneous potential, an inequality which is useful to test the spectral instability of the associated relative equilibrium.

Abstract:The main theme of the article is the study of discrete systems of material points subjected to constraints not only of a geometric type (holonomic constraints) but also of a kinematical type (anolonomic constraints). The setting up of the equations of motion follows a simple principle which generalizes the holonomic case. Furthermore, attention is paid to the fact that the kinematical variables retain their velocity meaning, without resorting to the pseudo-velocity technique. Particular situations are examined in which the modeling of the constraints can be carried out in several ways to evaluate their effective equivalence. Numerous examples, many of which taken from the most recurring ones in the literature, are provided in order to illustrate the proposed theory.

The Non-linear Stability of Equilibrium of a Mass Point System

Abstract:By applying the non-stationary tensor virial theorem to spheroidal systems of mass points with an anisotropic velocity distribution, we have found that, when the total energy is negative, there is a unique equilibrium of such a system. In this paper, we discuss the non-linear stability of this equilibrium. We find that, in the neighborhood of this equilibrium, spheroids execute quasi-periodic or near-quasi-periodic oscillation. Though chaoticity and orbit diffusion present in some cases, the equilibrium is practically stable with a large stable region. This result would be useful in the N-body simulation aimed to get better understanding of stellar system oscillation.

Abstract:We generalize a sufficient condition for the stability of relative equilibria in symmetric Hamiltonian systems, due to Patrick (1992 Relative equilibria in Hamiltonian systems: the dynamic interpretation of nonlinear stability on a reduced phase space J. Gee. Phys. 9 111-19), to the case in which these relative equilibria have non-trivial symmetry. We also describe a block diagonalization that facilitates the use of this result in particular examples and shows the relation between the stability of the relative equilibrium and the Lyapunov stability of the associated singular reduced equilibrium.

Abstract:We note that in the literature it is often taken for granted that for fractional-order system without delays, whenever the system trajectory reaches the equilibrium, it will stay there. In fact, this is the well-known phenomenon of finite-time stability. However, in this paper, we will prove that for fractional-order nonlinear system described by Caputo’s or Riemann–Liouville’s definition, any equilibrium cannot be finite-time stable as long as the continuous solution corresponding to the initial value problem globally exists. In addition, some examples of stability analysis are revisited and linear Lyapunov function is used to prove the asymptotic stability of positive fractional-order nonlinear systems.

Abstract:The real problem of the ball-and-beam system is not the nonlinear behavior under large excursions,but the limit cycle around the equilibrium point.It is pointed out that the limit cycle is caused by the hysteresis behavior of the ball during rolling.A pole placement method is proposed to avoid the limit cycle.The analysis is verified by simulation and by experiment. The stabilization approach for the ball-and-beam system is also proved to be correct.

Abstract:In this Letter, the authors introduce the concepts of nonlinear degree and partial stability for quasilinear hyperbolic systems and then prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the solution stability. An application to the system for plane elastic waves in some classical hyperelastic materials is given. For this kind of systems, some important traveling wave solutions are obtained.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Volume 62, Issue 2, Page 924-952, April 2024. This paper provides some sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness and the stochastic stability of the global solution for nonlinear neutral stochastic functional differential equations. When the drift term and the diffusion term satisfy a locally Lipschitz condition, and the Lyapunov monotonicity condition has a sign-changed time-varying coefficient, the existence and uniqueness of the global solution for such equations will be studied by using the Lyapunov–Krasovskii function approach and the theory of stochastic analysis. The stability in [math]th-moment, the asymptotical stability in [math]th-moment, and the exponential stability in [math]th-moment will be investigated. Different characterizations for these three kinds of stochastic stability in moment will be established, which are presented with respect to integration conditions. These results have seldom been reported in the existing literature. The almost surely exponential stability for the global solution of such equations is also discussed. Some discussions and comparisons are provided. Two examples are given to check the effectiveness of the theoretical results obtained.
