Abstract:Essential for directing conservation resources is to identify threatened vertebrate regions and diagnose the underlying causalities. Through relating vertebrates and threatened vertebrates to the rainfall-runoff chain, to the food chain, and to the human impact of urbanization, the following relationships are noticed: (i) The Earth’s vertebrates generally show increasing abundance and decreasing threatened species indicator (threatened species number/species abundance) for a higher Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) or larger city-size. (ii) Regional vertebrates reveal a notable ‘U-shape profile’ (‘step-like jump’) of threatened species indicator occurs in the moderate (high) NDVI regions in China (America). (iii) Positive/green city states emerge in China and are characterized by the lowest threatened species indicators in areas of low to moderate greenness, where the greenness trend of change during the last 30 years is about three times higher in the urbanized areas than over land. (iv) Negative/brown city states emerge in America revealing high threatened species indicators for greenness exceeding NDVI > 0.2, where similar greenness trends are of both urbanized and land areas. The occurrence of green and brown city states suggests a biodiversity change pattern characterized by the threatened species indicator declining from city regimes with high to those with low indicator values for increasing ratio of the city-over-land NDVI trends.

A bird's view of new conservation hotspots in China

Abstract:Blooming citizen science in China creates opportunities to update distribution maps of threatened birds and contributes to decision making for conservation. 46,073 records submitted by over 7000 bird watchers from 1998 to 2013 in China cover 1195 of 1371 species and all provincial administrative districts in the country. We extracted 13,181 occurrence localities for 95 threatened species defined by the IUCN Red List and 239 national protected species in China. By applying these data in MaxEnt model, we identified new conservation hotspots for threatened birds in China in coastal regions of the Bohai Gulf and the Yellow Sea, the south of the North China Plain, and the lower reach of the Yangtze River. These new conservation hotpots are not included in the global biodiversity hotspots, and not all represented in the priority regions in National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). These newly identified conservation hotspots are seriously under-protected: only less than 2% of them are in national nature reserves. There is a long way to go to meet the Aichi targets, a plan to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2020.

Abstract:Identifying and protecting hotspots of endemism and species richness is crucial for mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, our understanding of spatial diversity patterns is far from complete, which severely limits our ability to conserve biodiversity hotspots. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of amphibian species diversity in China, one of the most species-rich countries on Earth. Our study combines 20 y of field surveys with new molecular analyses of 521 described species and also identifies 100 potential cryptic species. We identify 10 hotspots of amphibian diversity in China, each with exceptional species richness and endemism and with exceptional phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic endemism (based on a new time-calibrated, species-level phylogeny for Chinese amphibians). These 10 hotspots encompass 59.6% of China’s described amphibian species, 49.0% of cryptic species, and 55.6% of species endemic to China. Only four of these 10 hotspots correspond to previously recognized biodiversity hotspots. The six new hotspots include the Nanling Mountains and other mountain ranges in South China. Among the 186 species in the six new hotspots, only 9.7% are well covered by protected areas and most (88.2%) are exposed to high human impacts. Five of the six new hotspots are under very high human pressure and are in urgent need of protection. We also find that patterns of richness in cryptic species are significantly related to those in described species but are not identical.

Abstract:Large scale heterogeneous distribution of biodiversity has become a hot topic for ecologists and conservationists. A threat status assessment combined with geographic distribution patterns of threatened plants in China has been conducted at a national scale in this study based upon a distribution database that refers to both specimen records and published references. Currently, 302 threatened plant species are cataloged in the “National Protected Key Wild Plants” in China belonging to 92 families and 194 genera. Results of the assessment according to the Categories and Criteria system of The World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List indicate that three species have been assessed as Extinct in Wild (EW) while a further 79, 99 and 112 species have been assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU), respectively. Distribution patterns of threatened plants were analyzed with GIS to identify areas of high species diversity. It was found that threatened plant species occur unevenly within counties and are concentrated in the following eight hotspots: the central and southern Hengduanshan mountain area; the southeast regions of Yunnan as well as Xishuangbanna and southwestern Guangxi; the southern Hainan island; the border mountainous regions of Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi provinces; the mountainous regions of southwestern Hubei and northern Hunan; southwestern Zhejiang and western Fujian; central Sichuan and southern Gansu; and the western mountains of Guangdong. Moreover, the 12 counties with the greatest number of threatened plant species represent cumulatively more than 50% of the total listed species and, therefore, are the regions in China that should be prioritized for conservation efforts. By overlapping the map of threatened plant species with the distribution of national nature reserves, a gap was identified in protected areas. This research will ultimately provide insights for prioritizing biodiversity conservation as well as processing the mechanisms of distribution patterns.

Abstract:Habitat degradation and loss threaten the survival of many species, especially vertebrates. The establishment of nature reserves is an efficient approach to protect biodiversity. However, fulfilling conservation targets depends largely on the effectiveness of these nature reserves in capturing the targeted species. In this study, we developed a distribution database of threatened terrestrial vertebrates in China, then explored the patterns of the threatened terrestrial vertebrates and evaluated the effectiveness of current nature reserves in terms of their conservation, further identified the conservation priorities for these species in China. We found 452 threatened terrestrial vertebrates widely distributed across China, especially in mountainous and forested regions in southern China. The current nature reserve network is inadequate to capture the threatened vertebrate species. The nature reserves were found to cover 30.47% of the hotspots and 38.65% of the ranges of these species on average, with quite a few conservation hotspot and species gaps. We further propose to either systematically plan and fix current nature reserves or add new protected areas in Yunnan Province and mountainous regions in southeast China.
Habitat-specific conservation priorities of multidimensional diversity patterns of amphibians in China effectively contribute to the '3030' target

Abstract:Amphibia is the most threatened animal group among all land vertebrates in the context of anthropogenic global change. Filling the conservation gaps for this taxonomic group could help achieve the ambitious target of covering 30 % of the land by 2030 ('3030' target) set by the 15-th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15). In this study, we compiled the most up-to-date occurrence records and corresponding species-specific traits and phylogenies of amphibians in China (particularly those newly described in the past decade) to explore the spatial distribution patterns of multidimensional diversity (including taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic) for different species groups (including all, endemic and threatened). Additionally, a new conservation gap index (CGI) was proposed and applied to the analysis of multi-objective conservation strategies. The results showed that the spatial distribution of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of amphibians in China is markedly geographically diverse, with common hotspots for all three concentrated in the humid mountainous regions of southern China. The CGI, which is independent of arbitrary threshold selection and grid cell size, showed that the conservation gap for amphibians in China is largest in biomes such as tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests and temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. The multi-objective conservation analysis revealed that the Yangtze River basin, Pearl River basin and Southeast Basin in China have pivotal roles in achieving the '3030' target due to their high taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity, relatively high proportion of threatened and endemic species, and low coverage of existing nature reserves. Notably, sustainable management of less-protected habitats, including farmlands and grasslands, can reduce the area requirement of strict protection for reaching the '3030' conservation goal. This study provides practical strategies for guiding amphibian conservation by systematically integrating multidimensional biodiversity information, habitat features and the spatial distributions of the existing natural reserves.

Abstract:There are 1,372 bird species, including 77 endemic species in China. The over-exploitation of resources, habitat loss, fragmentation, and environmental pollution challenges the conservation of Chi- nese birds. In order to comprehensively evaluate the status of threatened birds in China, the Red List of Vertebrates (Bird) in China, supported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Peopleu0027s Re- public of China, was initiated. According to IUCN red list criteria, this evaluation was accomplished by 27 researchers following the steps: confirm the evaluated species, data collection, preliminary evalua- tion, preliminary check, interactive check and finalization. Our evaluation demonstrated that three spe- cies (white stork Ciconia ciconia, siberian spruce grouse Falcipennis falcipennis, and sarus crane Grus antigone) are characterized as Regionally Extinct (RE), 15 species among them are Critically Endan- gered (CR), 51 species are Endangered (EN), 80 species are Vulnerable (VU), 190 species are Near Threatened (NT), 876 species are characterized as of Least Concern (LC), and 157 species are Data De- ficient (DD). Abstract:China, one of the world's "megabiodiversity countries", is home to more than 30 000 vascular plant and 6300 vertebrate species. Over thousands of years, however, cultivation has led to the disappearance of many of these species from the plains and lowland areas. The mountain regions still harbor large numbers of species, because there have been fewer human and natural disturbances and there are more diverse habitats. We used county level species distribution databases to explore patterns of biodiversity and to identify biodiversity hotspots within China. Ten hotspot ecoregions were identified, containing 3110 plant genera (92.0% of the country's total), 220 (90.5%) endemic plant genera, 366 (94.3%) endangered plants, and 254 (72.2%) endangered vertebrates, 427 (91.0%) terrestrial mammal species, and 65 (85.5%) endemic mammals. All 10 hotspot ecoregions are located in the mountainous areas of China. Although high richness of overall, endangered, and endemic plants and animals co-occurred in many of the same hotspot ecoregions, they often occurred in different counties within these ecoregions and showed low spatial congruence. In conclusion, China's mountain regions are critical for protecting biodiversity and should be made conservation priorities in the future.

Abstract:The analysis of biodiversity spatial patterns and the detection of hotspots are effective ways for conservation planning and scientific management of biodiversity. Based on field investigation, historical data and literature information, we constructed the comprehensive index of biodiversity by considering habitat quality, species diversity and landscape diversity within Chongqing Pengxi River Wetland Nature Reserve. Combined with spatial autocorrelation analysis, we analyzed spatial distribution pattern and the degree of spatial autocorrelation of biodiversity in the nature reserve, identified biodiversity hotspots, and discussed the protection effectiveness of existing nature reserve for the hotspots. The results showed that the spatial pattern of biodiversity in the nature reserve tended to decrease with the increases of distance from the river and riparian zone. Areas with high value of biodiversity index were mainly concentrated in Pengxi River, Puli River, Baijiaxi Stream and alongshore areas. There was significant positive correlation in the spatial distribution of biodiversity. The spatial autocorrelation of local areas was mainly characterized by high-high aggregation and low-low aggregation. The area of biodiversity hotspots was 457 hm2, accounting for 11.1% of the total nature reserve. The core area of current nature reserve covered 51% of the hotspots and 50% of the secondary hotspots. The structure and functional zone distribution of nature reserve should be further optimized and adjusted. We suggested that other hotspots should become part of the core area, including the Longwangtang area of Puli River, Xiaoyakou, Dengjiawan, Dongziyan, Longwangtang, Jiuwuju, Huatouju, Xinpuzi and Longjia yard of Baijiaxi Stream. The cold spots should be removed from the core area, to improve the function zoning of nature reserve. Our results could provide quantitative basic references for the boundary optimization and control zoning of nature reserve, and the reasonable promotion of the adjustment of "three zones to two zones", and could have guiding significance for improving effectiveness of species conservation and formulating scientific protection strategies.

Abstract:China is one of the world′s richest countries in biodiversity,but at the same time,also one of the countries where biodiversity is under the most serious threat.In 1950s and 60s,a large-scale biodiversity survey was carried out,laying down a solid foundation for composition of a series monographs of the vegetation,flora and fauna of China.Since 1990s,surveys have been going on in key areas to investigate important resources.Besides,categories and criteria for Red List have been developed,endangeredness of wild animal and plant species evaluated and graded,and demonstrative evaluation of the grading of endangeredness of ecosystems carried out.Great progress has also been made in ex-situ and in-situ conservation of biodiversity,and a series of relevant conservation planning reports and documents issued.Based on the achievements in the field of investigation and conservation of biodiversity,a review from the aspects of biodiversity survey,grading and evaluation of endangeredness,in ex-situ and in-situ conservation,policies and planning for biodiversity conservation is presented of the progresses China has made in the past 20 years in researches related to investigation and conservation of biodiversity.In addition,orientation of future research is proposed in light of existing problems.The authors hold that a comprehensive biodiversity survey is a basic work and hence suggest that comprehensive investigation and evaluation of the background of the biodiversity be further carried out,and a biodiversity monitoring network system be established.
Divergent Importance and Geographic Patterns in Threats to Birds and Mammals in China

Abstract:Aim Wildlife populations are continuing to decrease worldwide. Understanding the ranking and distribution of drivers of species declines is crucial to enable targeted actions to counteract major threats. However, few studies have assessed the relative importance and geographic distribution of threats to biodiversity in China, even for high‐profile groups such as birds and mammals. Therefore, this study aims to rank and map the distribution of threat to birds and mammals in China, which could provide novel insight into biodiversity conservation in China. Location China. Methods A database of different threats for 147 threatened bird species and 176 threatened terrestrial mammal species was obtained from China's Red List of Biodiversity published in 2021. We collated information on the distribution and threat categories for birds and mammals in China, aiming to classify, rank and map threats. We used Bray–Curtis dissimilarity index to examine the correlations of threats occurring simultaneously, and compared the distribution of habitat of threatened birds and mammals. In addition, we conducted threat ranking analyses of threatened birds and mammals between different orders and traits (body mass and clutch/litter sizes). Results The results showed that the most common threats to birds were habitat loss, hunting, human disturbance, agriculture, pollution and logging, while the most common threats to mammals were hunting, agriculture, logging, habitat loss, human disturbance and livestock farming or ranching. These threats showed different geographic patterns, and some threats frequently co‐occur as threat syndromes. Forests were the primary habitat for most threatened species, and orders formed by larger species with small clutch or litter sizes were more likely to be threatened. Main Conclusions We highlight the most common threats and key areas for conservation. Furthermore, focusing on clusters of co‐occurring threats may be the most effective way to aid recovery of threatened species, and targeted actions are needed to counter ongoing population declines in many groups. These actions should not be limited to the protection of regions where species are at risk of multiple significant threats, but should also include the maintenance and restoration of native forests and strategic planning of afforestation through planted forests.

Abstract:Background & Aims:Amphibians and reptiles are important indicators of ecosystem health,and they are vulnerable to changes in the environment.Many of their populations are undergoing rapid decline and species extinction in the worldwide.A recent assessment of Red List of China's Vertebrates found that 37.05％of amphibians and 30.5％of reptiles are threatened.Therefore,building a national biodiversity monitoring network,to research and analyze the trend and threats of amphibians and reptiles is a prerequisite for conservation.As part of the Chinese Biodiversity Monitoring and Research Network(Sino BON),the Sino BON-Amphibian & Reptile has covered 11 key areas with rich biodiversity and high habitat heterogeneity across China.This program aims to combine intensive field surveys and ecological modeling techniques to evaluate population dynamics and community structures of amphibian and reptile species in the study areas. Review Results:Currently,the Sino BON-Amphibian & Reptile adheres to focusing on the research of amphibian and reptile diversity.A total of 16 species were newly discovered in China,including 13 new species and 3 national new record species.Significant progress has been made in the national need for the protection of Critically Endangered amphibian(CR)Chinese giant salamander(Andrias davidianus)and Endangered(EN)amphibian Taliang crocodile newt(Liangshantriton taliangensis),the environmental DNA(eDNA)technology and radio tracking technology applied in wild,the ecological impact of desertification habitats on reptiles,and invasive alien species,which have provided strong scientific support for protecting biodiversity of amphibians and reptiles in China. Prospects:For further progresses,it is still necessary to continuously enhance monitoring and research on amphibians and reptiles,strengthen monitoring network construction and application of advanced technologies,emphasize the protection of amphibians and reptiles from the level of laws and regulations,establish and optimize the protected areas,and implement the necessary ex situ and in situ conservation,so as to achieve more effective protection of rare amphibian and reptile resources.
Spatial Pattern of Species Richness among Terrestrial Mammals in China

Abstract:We describe large-scale patterns of terrestrial mammal distribution in China by using geographical information system (GIS) spatial analysis. Mammal taxa, examined by species, family, and order, were binned into 10 km × 10 km grids to explore the relationship between their spatial distribution and geographical factors potentially affecting the same. The spatial pattern of species richness revealed four agglomerations: high richness in the south, low in north, and two low richness areas in eastern and western China. Species richness patterns in Carnivora was the most similar to overall terrestrial mammals’ richness; however, species richness in different orders exhibited distributions distinct from the overall pattern. We found a negative relationship between richness and latitude gradient. Species richness was most strongly correlated with forested ecosystems, and was found to be higher at an elevation of 2000~2200 m, with greater altitudinal variation indicative of higher species richness.

Abstract:The states of endangered and rare species of marine medicinal organisms in China were investigated and evaluated for the first time by field survey and data analysis together with literature data.It revealed that up to 235 species of marine medicinal organisms in China are in the Red List Categories and as protected species,including 9 critically endangered species,112 endangered species,88 vulnerable species,5 near threatened species and 1 rare species,with an endangered rate of 14.0%.Among the endangered medicinal organisms,the species belonging to national protected animal categories Ⅰ and Ⅱ are 10 and 44,respectively.Over-fishing,pollution and other anthropogenic activities have resulted in the destruction of marine bioresources,especially acute degradation of biodiversity of marine medicinal animals.The feasible strategies for conservation of biodiversities and bioresources of Chinese marine medicinal species should be to improve the construction and management of marine natural reserves system as well as marine special reserves.

Abstract:A comparison of the number of animal species of China and the world is tentatively made based on materials already known. The species diversity of invertebrates belonging to the phyla Gnathostomula, Gastrotricha, Nematomorpha, Onychophora and Pterobranchia are nearly unknown from China's fauna. Besides, many groups are still poorly known and pending further study, such as the invertebrates of the following phyla (or part taxa under them): Porifera, Mesozoa, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Echiura, Pogonophora, Mollusca, Branchiopoda, Entoprocta, Tardigrada, Pentastoma, Arthropoda and Enteropneusta. The status of threatened animals is also discussed. Forest destruction and over-exploitation of animal resources are undoubtly the main factors threatening species diversity. Besides, water pollution and eutrophication has become major factors bringing many animals, especially freshwater invertebrates, to the verge of extinction. During the past decades Chinese zoologists have exerted great efforts in the study of taxonomy and protection of wild animals, especially the rare and endemic species, as well as those of great economic value. However, in a megadiversity country like China, there is still a large number of species of higher taxa remain to be investigated and inventoried.

Abstract:China is one of the megadiverse freshwater regions in the world, but the detailed diversity inventory, distribution pattern and ecological drivers are incompletely known, which hinders large-scale freshwater diversity conservation and pattern analysis at the global scale. Aiming to fill this knowledge gap, we compiled a comprehensive richness and distribution database of freshwater fishes in China and adject areas based on our long-term survey and exhaustive data collection from 165 hydrologic units at tributary and sub-basin grain. Then, we elucidated a biogeographical pattern using a β dissimilarity matrix with species presence/absence data and taxonomic relationships. Finally, we evaluated the explanatory power of three hypotheses, i.e., 'area', 'energy', and 'history', in explaining the diversity patterns. A total of 2,063 species utilizing freshwater habitats were identified in the study area. Among them, 1,651 freshwater species were recorded in China, of which 1034 species are endemic to China. Four major freshwater zoogeographic regions, the Palearctic, High Central Asia, East Asia, and South Asia, were identified from a dendrogram, and each region was characterized by different taxonomic categories (i.e., from species to order). 'Historical' factors play the most important role (43.64–62.96% of the total variation), or at least a comparable role to that of contemporary climate, in explaining the freshwater fish diversity patterns (species richness and species endemicity). In conclusion, the uplift of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, nearby orogeny, and the following formation of the East Asian monsoon climate had profound impacts on the diversification and distribution of ichthyofauna in China and adjacent areas.

Status of Freshwater Fish Biodiversity in the Yangtze River Basin, China

Abstract:Chinese freshwater fish numbers are over 1000 species, and at least 717 species in 33 families inhabit rivers, and another 66 species spend part of their lives in rivers, while others are mainly confined to estuarine reaches but occasionally swim upstream. Information on freshwater fish biodiversity in the Yangtze River basin was synthesized. Three hundred sixty-one species were found in the basin, of which 177 species are endemic to the Yangtze River and 25 species are categorized as endangered on the China Red Data Book for fishes. Around 80% of the species (including 124 endemics) in the Yangtze River occur in its upper course above the Three Gorges Dam. As to species richness patterns along the altitude gradient, non-endemic and endemic fishes were different. Non-endemic richness showed a significant decrease with increasing elevation, whereas endemic richness had two peaks including a major peak around 500 m and a minor peak near 1800 m. Species density had two peaks at mid-elevation zones for endemic and non-endemic fishes, such as 1500-2000 m and 3500-4000 m for endemic fishes and 500-1000 m and 3500-4000 m for non-endemic fishes, respectively. In addition, the structure of endemic fish assemblages in the upper Yangtze River was highly correlated with local topographic and geomorphic characteristics. The combined effects of pollution, habitat degradation, and overexploitation have reduced fish stocks dramatically. Hydrological alterations are perhaps the largest threat to fish biodiversity in the Yangtze River basin, such as dam construction and disconnection between the river and its lakes. Conservation measures which were applied currently to protect the fish biodiversity in the basin exert ineffectively, such as nature reserve establishment, artificial propagation, and releasing. Therefore, in order to preserve fish biodiversity more effectively in this area, reserve networks, rather than a single national nature reserve, should be established. Moreover, improved artificial releasing and habitat rehabilitation should be considered urgently.

Abstract:On the basis of field investigation and data of Danxia landform regions, which were provided by the committee of world heritage application, the distribution of precious, rare and dangered and Chinese unique genus of plants and animal in Danxia land-form areas were summarized. The total of all types of rare and endangered plants belonged in 39 families 93 genus 178 species. There were totally 41 species listed as the national key protected plants, among which 5 species of plants belonged to national first-grade protected, 36 species for national second-grade protected. There were 128 species listed as Chinese Dangered Plant Red Book, belonged in 33 families 77 genus, and endangrous (EN), Vulnerable (VU) and CR respectively is 7, 65 and 2 species. There are 17 threaten plants were recorded in "IUCN Red List" (2006), which belonged in 14 families 15 genus, endangered species (EN) 3 species, Vulnerable (VU) 6 species, and (CR) 1 species; CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species ) re-corded 107 species, belonged in 5 families 46 genus. Further, according to the National key protection wild animal list (1999), there are 71 species of animals in the key national protection, 10 species belonged to national first-grade protected ones, 61 species be-longed to national second-grade protected; IUCN recorded 85 species, of which 8 species in endangered ones, 20 species in vulner-able species, and 2 species belonged to CR, and the other for low-risk; CITES recorded 100 species, belonged in 14 orders 29 fami-lies, including single order and family of 5 species; China Redbook involved in 72 species of animals, including endangered species (EN) 7 species and vulnerable (VU) 26 species, CR 1 species, the other for low-risk species. By comparison, the number of key pro-tection of wild plants and animal is larger than the one of Huangshan, Shennongjia, Wuyishan, and the similar as Sanqingshan Mountain. And, the protected wild angiosperms is richer than ones of Huangshan, Wuyi Mount. Prolific diversity and uniqueness of Danxia landform region likely is an important refuge during the transition of history.
