Abstract:The analytically exact solutions to the two-photon Rabi–Stark model are given by using the Bogoliubov operators approach. Transcendental functions responsible for the exact solutions are derived. The zeros of the transcendental functions reproduce completely the regular spectra. The first-order quantum phase transitions are also detected by the pole structure of the derived transcendental functions, similar to the one-photon Rabi–Stark model, different from the two-photon Rabi model where the energy levels for the ground-state and the first excited state do not cross. The spectra collapse characteristics resemble those in two-photon Rabi model. Some low lying levels can split off from the collapse energy, which is different from the one-photon Rabi–Stark model in which all levels collapse.

Abstract:The experimentally observed special line-shape induced by the interaction between two counter-propagating equal-frequency fields and an Y-type four-level system with two mixed upper levels has been analyzed theoretically. Serious line-shape variations of the two-photon transitions due to the quantum interference are discussed and predicted.

Abstract:The quantum interference and Rabi oscillation of a V-type three-level system with two orthogonal sub-states in an elongated semiconductor quantum dot are discussed theoretically with optical Bloch equations when the system is driven by pulse-pair. Numerical calculations from the optical Bloch equations reveal that the quantum interference in the system is enhanced with the increasing of the energy decay or splitting. Furthermore, the populations swapping in two orthogonal sub-states can be realized though the direct transition is prohibited.

Abstract:The quantum phase transition in an atom-molecule conversion system with atomic transition between two hyperfine states is studied. In the mean-field approximation, we give the phase diagram in which the phase boundary only depends on the atomic transition strength and the atom-molecule energy detuning, but not on the atomic interactions. Such a phase boundary is further confirmed by calculating the fidelity of the ground state and the energy gap between the first excited state and the ground state. As a comparison to the mean-field results, we also study the quantum phase transition with the full quantum method where the phase boundary depends on the particle number. Analysing the finite-size scaling behaviours of the energy gap, the fidelity susceptibility and the first-order derivative of entanglement entropy with respect to the atomic transition strength, we obtain their critical exponents by numerical calculation and show that in the thermodynamic limit, one can obtain the same phase boundary as in the mean-field approximation. Our results show a new way to manipulate the quantum phase transition by regulating the atomic transition strength with the intensity of the laser.

Abstract:We conduct theoretical. studies on the collision-induced destructive quantum interference of two-colour two-photon transitions in an open rhomb-type five-level system with a widely separated doublet by the density matrix approach. The effects of the collision-induced decay rates, the ratio of the transition dipole moments and the energy separation of the doublet on the interference are analysed. It is shown that a narrow dip appears in the excitation spectrum due to the collision-induced destructive interference, and. that the narrow interference dip still exists even when the collision broadening is comparable to the energy separation of the doublet. The physical origin of the collision-induced destructive quantum interference is analysed in the dressed-atom picture.

Abstract:Raman scattering spectroscopy has been a necessary and accurate tool not only for characterizing lattice structure, but also for probing electron-photon and electron-phonon interactions. In the quantum picture, electrons at ground states can be excited to intermediate energy levels by photons at different k -points in the Brillouin zone, then couple to phonons and emit photons with changed energies. The elementary Raman processes via all possible pathways can interfere with each other, giving rise to intriguing scattering effects. Here we report that quantum interference can lead to significant chiral Raman response in monolayer transitional metal dichalcogenide with triclinic symmetry. Large circular intensity difference observed for monolayer rhenium dichalcogenide originates from inter- k interference of Raman scattering excited by circularly polarized light with opposite helicities. Our results reveal chiral Raman spectra as a new manifestation of quantum interference in Raman scattering process, and may inspire induction of chiral optical response in other materials.

Abstract:The exotic phase transitions and multistabilities in atom-cavity coupled systems have attracted tremendous interests recently. In this work, we investigate the effect of photon hopping between two Dicke cavities, which induces rich quantum phases for steady states and dynamic process. Starting from a generic dimer system where the two cavities are not necessarily identical, we analytically prove all possible steady-state phases, which are confirmed by numerical calculations. We then focus on the special case with two identical cavities, where all the steady states are confirmed by exact solutions. We show that photon hopping is a convenient and powerful tool to manipulate the quantum phases and induce multistable behavior in this system.

Abstract:A femtosecond laser pulse can be tailored to control the two-photon transitions using the ultra-fast pulse-shaping technique. This paper theoretically and experimentally demonstrates that two-photon transitions in molecular system with broad absorption line can be effectively controlled by square phase-modulation in frequency domain, and the influence of all parameters characterizing the square phase-modulation on two-photon transitions is systemically investigated and discussed. The obtained results have potential application in nonlinear spectroscopy and molecular physics.

Abstract:Double slits with molecular states Despite decades of research, the role of quantum mechanical effects in molecular scattering has not yet been fully investigated and can still demonstrate fascinating results, even for simple triatomic systems. Zhou et al . show that the entangled bond axis orientations in the biaxial state of a deuterium molecule can act as the two slits of a double-slit interferometer for rotationally inelastic collision with a helium atom, giving rise to quantum interference between two indistinguishable pathways (see the Perspective by Wang and Yang). The present work presents an elegant example of quantum interference in molecular scattering that is conceptually similar to the famous Young’s optical double-slit experiment. The proposed molecular interferometer could be used to coherently control the phases in various molecular processes in future experiments. —YS

Non-equilibrium Phase-Transitions in Multi-Component Rydberg Gases

Abstract:Highly-excited Rydberg atoms have strong long-range interactions resulting in exotic optical prop erties such as large single photon non-linearities and intrinsic bistability. In this paper we study optical-driven non-equilibrium phase transitions in a thermal Rydberg gas with a sensitivity two order of magnitude higher than in previous work. In this regime we can elucidate the effect of inter actions on the bistable optical response, and exploit different branches in the potential in order to study multi-component Rydberg gases with a rich of phase diagram including overlapping bistable regions. In addition, we study the effect of polarization on the width of the hysteresis loop. Finally, we observe that the medium exhibits a dynamical instability resulting from the competing dynamics of excitation and decay.
Quantum Phase Transition of the Two-Dimensional Rydberg Atom Array in an Optical Cavity

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional Rydberg atom array in an optical cavity with help of the meanfield theory and the large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The strong dipole-dipole interactions between Rydberg atoms can make the system exhibit the crystal structure, and the coupling between two-level atom and cavity photon mode can result in the formation of the polariton. The interplay between them provides a rich quantum phase diagram including the Mott, solid-1/2, superradiant and superradiant solid phases. As the two-order co-existed phase, the superradiant solid phase breaks both translational and U(1) symmetries. Based on both numerical and analytic results, we found the region of superradiant solid is much larger than one dimensional case, so that it can be more easily observed in the experiment. Finally, we discuss how the energy gap of the Rydberg atom can affect the type of the quantum phase transition and the number of triple points.

Abstract:In the sodium dimer rhomb-type four-level system with a pair of coherent superposition levels, the interference enhancement of two-photon absorption caused by coherent superposition of the coupling levels is experimentally observed. The calculated results using density matrix equation are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Anisotropic Rabi model with two-photon relaxation

Abstract:The interplay of three light-matter interaction processes - rotating and counter-rotating interactions and two-photon relaxation of the light field - is a topic of interest in quantum optics and quantum information processing. In this work, we theoretically investigate the three light-matter interaction processes using the anisotropic Rabi model, which accounts for different strengths of rotating and counter-rotating interactions and the unique occurrence of photon escape exclusively in pairs. By numerically solving the Lindblad master equation, we analyze the excitation-relaxation dynamics and derive a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian to gain further physical insights. To explore the individual effects of these interactions, we examine three analytically tractable limits of the effective Hamiltonian. Our analysis reveals that the three competitive light-matter interaction processes exhibit sensitivity to parity, leading to intriguing phenomena in both transient and steady states. Particularly interesting dynamical patterns resembling quantum phase transitions emerge when these three interaction terms compete. This work deepens the understanding of ultrastrong light-matter interaction in open quantum systems and offers valuable insights into cavity-based quantum computations.

Abstract:In a combined experimental and theoretical effort we report on two novel types of ultracold long-range Rydberg molecules. First, we demonstrate the creation of triatomic molecules of one Rydberg atom and two ground-state atoms in a single-step photoassociation. Second, we assign a series of excited dimer states that are bound by a so far unexplored mechanism based on internal quantum reflection at a steep potential drop. The properties of the Rydberg molecules identified in this work qualify them as prototypes for a new type of chemistry at ultracold temperatures.
Exploring global symmetry-breaking superradiant phase via phase competition

Abstract:Superradiant phase transitions play a fundamental role in understanding the mechanism of collective light-matter interaction at the quantum level. Here we investigate multiple superradiant phases and phase transitions with different symmetry-breaking patterns in a two-mode V-type Dicke model. Interestingly, we show that there exists a quadruple point where one normal phase, one global symmetry-breaking superradiant phase and two local symmetry-breaking superradiant phases meet. Such a global phase results from the phase competition between two local superradiant phases and can not occur in the standard $\Lambda$- and $\Xi$-type three-level configurations in quantum optics. Moreover, we exhibit a sequential first-order quantum phase transition from one local to the global again to the other local superradiant phase. Our study opens up a perspective of exploring multi-level quantum critical phenomena with global symmetry breaking.

Abstract:In molecular photoionization, the two-center interference is widely described within the electric dipole approximation, neglecting the electric quadrupole effect. By numerically solving the two-dimensional time-dependent Schr & ouml;dinger equation beyond the dipole approximation and using perturbation theory, we demonstrate that the two-center interference structure induced by the electric quadrupole transition in the one-photon ionization of H2+ can be observed in the asymmetric photoelectron yield along the laser propagation direction. Compared with the dipole transition, the electron wave packets emitted from the two nuclei of the molecule due to the electric quadrupole transition exhibit an additional phase difference. This phase difference results in a distinct two-center interference structure compared to the dipole transition. Furthermore, an experimental scheme based on the reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions is proposed to reveal the two-center interference structure induced by the electric quadrupole transition. Our study provides a different perspective for investigating the nondipole effect in molecular photoionization.

Abstract:Quantum interferences in spontaneous emission from a double V-type four-level atom in a double-band photonic crystal have been investigated. The double V-type transitions from the two upper levels to the two lower levels can interact not only with modes near the edges of a double-band photonic band gap, but also with free vacuum modes. The resulting two types of quantum interferences give rise to not only dark lines, but also a narrow spontaneous line in the spectrum from the transition coupled to the free vacuum modes. The dark lines and narrow spontaneous line are shown to be dependent on the width of the forbidden gap, relative position of the upper levels from the band edges, coupling constants, and initial coherent superposition state of the system.
