Abstract:We calculate the phonon excitation spectrum in a zero-temperature dilute boson-fermion gaseous mixture. We show how the sound velocity changes due to the boson-fermion interaction, and we determine the dynamical stability regime of a homogeneous mixture. We identify a resonant phonon-exchange interaction between the fermions as the physical mechanism leading to the instability.

Abstract:The quasiparticle excitations and dynamical stability of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a quantum degenerate Fermi gas of atoms at zero temperature is studied. The Fermi gas is assumed to be either in the normal state or to have undergone a phase transition to a superfluid state by forming Cooper pairs. The quasiparticle excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate exhibit a dynamical instability due to a resonant exchange of energy and momentum with quasiparticle excitations of the Fermi gas. The stability regime for the bosons depends on whether the Fermi gas is in the normal state or in the superfluid state. We show that the energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum for the superfluid state stabilizes the low-energy excitations of the condensate. In the stable regime, we calculate the boson quasiparticle spectrum, which is modified by the fluctuations in the density of the Fermi gas.

Abstract:We present a detailed study of the low-lying collective excitations of a spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture at finite temperature in the collisionless regime. The excitation frequencies of the condensate are calculated self-consistently using the static Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. The frequency shifts and damping rates due to the coupled dynamics of the condensate, noncondensate, and degenerate Fermi gas are also taken into account by means of the random-phase approximation and linear-response theory. In our treatment, the dipole excitation remains close to the bare trapping frequency for all temperatures considered, and thus is consistent with the generalized Kohn theorem. We discuss in some detail the behavior of monopole and quadrupole excitations as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling. At nonzero temperatures we find that, as the mixture moves towards spatial separation with increasing Bose-Fermi coupling, the damping rate of the monopole (quadrupole) excitation increases (decreases). This provides us a useful signature to identify the phase transition of spatial separation.

Abstract:Stabilized by quantum fluctuations, dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates can form self-bound liquid-like droplets. However in the Bogoliubov theory, there are imaginary phonon energies in the long-wavelength limit, implying dynamical instability of this system. A similar instability appears in the Bogoliubov theory of a binary quantum droplet, and is removed due to higher-order quantum fluctuations as shown recently [Gu Q and Yin L 2020 Phys. Rev. B 102 220503(R)]. We study the excitation energy of a dipolar quantum droplet in the Beliaev formalism, and find that quantum fluctuations significantly enhance the phonon stability. We adopt a self-consistent approach without the problem of complex excitation energy in the Bogoliubov theory, and obtain a stable anisotropic sound velocity which is consistent with the superfluid hydrodynamic theory, but slightly different from the result of the extended Gross–Pitaevskii equation due to quantum depletion. A modified Gross–Pitaevskii equation in agreement with the Beliaev theory is proposed, which takes the effect of quantum fluctuations into account more completely.

Abstract:Particle-like excitations, or quasi-particles, emerging from interacting fermionic and bosonic quantum fields underlie many intriguing quantum phenomena in high energy and condensed matter systems. Computation of the properties of these excitations is frequently intractable in the strong interaction regime. Quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures offer promising prospects to elucidate the physics of such quasi-particles. In this work, we investigate phonon propagation in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate immersed in a degenerate Fermi gas with interspecies scattering length $a_\text{BF}$ tuned by a Feshbach resonance. We observe sound mode softening with moderate attractive interactions. For even greater attraction, surprisingly, stable sound propagation re-emerges and persists across the resonance. The stability of phonons with resonant interactions opens up opportunities to investigate novel Bose-Fermi liquids and fermionic pairing in the strong interaction regime.

Exploring phonon-like interactions in one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Abstract:With the objective of simulating the physical behavior of electrons in a dynamic background, we investigate a cold atomic Bose-Fermi mixture confined in an optical lattice potential solely affecting the bosons. The bosons, residing in the deep superfluid regime, inherit the periodicity of the optical lattice, subsequently serving as a dynamic potential for the polarized fermions. Owing to the atom-phonon interaction between the fermions and the condensate, the coupled system exhibits a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from a Luttinger liquid to a Peierls phase. However, under sufficiently strong Bose-Fermi interaction, the Peierls phase loses stability, leading to either a collapsed or a separated phase. We find that the primary function of the optical lattice is to stabilize the Peierls phase. Furthermore, the presence of a confining harmonic trap induces a diverse physical behavior, surpassing what is observed for either bosons or fermions individually trapped. Notably, under attractive Bose-Fermi interaction, the insulating phase may adopt a fermionic wedding-cake-like configuration, reflecting the dynamic nature of the underlying lattice potential. Conversely, for repulsive interaction, the trap destabilizes the Peierls phase, causing the two species to separate.

Abstract:We study the properties of dilute bosons immersed in a single component Fermi sea across a broad boson-fermion Feshbach resonance. The stability of the mixture requires that the bare interaction between bosons exceeds a critical value, which is a universal function of the boson-fermion scattering length, and exhibits a maximum in the unitary region. We calculate the quantum depletion, momentum distribution and the boson contact parameter across the resonance. The transition from condensate to molecular Fermi gas is also discussed.

Abstract:We study the phase separation of a Bose-Einstein condensate system with the conversion of one-species bosonic atoms into molecules via Feshbach resonance. Adopting the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we plot the phase diagrams of the system in two different parameter spaces for different atom-molecule interactions. In the presence of an isotropic trap, the density profiles in spatial space with fixed total number of atoms are also plotted. The clear phase separation in spatial space enables one to determine the location of atoms in the trap, which may be used as a possible experimental probe method.

Abstract:We study the dynamical stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice with a time-periodic modulation potential and a constant acceleration force simultaneously. We derive the explicit expressions of quasienergies and obtain the stability diagrams of the ground state in parameter spaces. For integer and non-integer (rational) ratios of the acceleration force to the modulation frequency, different dependence relationships of the critical interaction strength on the modulation amplitude are observed. Our results are expected to help experimentalists to determine parameter regions as required.

Abstract:Abstract The interplay of quantum statistics and interactions in atomic Bose–Fermi mixtures leads to a phase diagram markedly different from pure fermionic or bosonic systems. However, investigating this phase diagram remains challenging when bosons condense due to the resulting fast interspecies loss. Here we report observations consistent with a phase transition from a polaronic to a molecular phase in a density-matched degenerate Bose–Fermi mixture. The condensate fraction, representing the order parameter of the transition, is depleted by interactions, and the build-up of strong correlations results in the emergence of a molecular Fermi gas. The features of the underlying quantum phase transition represent a new phenomenon complementary to the paradigmatic Bose–Einstein condensate/Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer crossover observed in Fermi systems. By driving the system through the transition, we produce a sample of sodium–potassium molecules exhibiting a large molecule-frame dipole moment in the quantum-degenerate regime.

Abstract:The mixture of the scalar bosonic and the spinless or polarized fermionic cold atoms in the one-dimensional optical lattice is studied. The system is modeled by the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which shows different behavior from that of the Bose-Hubbard or the Fermi-Hubbard models. Because the SU(1 vertical bar 1)-supersymmetric Bethe ansatz solution gives an excellent approximation to this kind of mixed cold atomic systems, the ground-state properties of the system such as the densities of state in the momentum space are obtained based on the Bethe ansatz. If the number of bosons is equal to that of fermions and the filling factor is 1, it is found that there exists a critical on-site interaction U-c. If U < U-c, the ground state of the system is in the superfluid phase, while if U>U-c, the ground state is in the insulating phase. The superfluid-insulator transition occurs at U-c. From the analysis of the superfluid density, the value of the critical point is determined as U-c=2.79256, which is larger than the U-c=0 for the Fermi-Hubbard model and smaller than the U-c=3.28 for the Bose-Hubbard model. The elementary excitations and effective Hamiltonian in the strong-coupling limit are also discussed.
Supersolidity of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates induced by coupling to fermions

Abstract:We study a mixture of a repulsive dipolar condensate and a degenerate Fermi gas in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. We demonstrate that the presence of fermions, which attract bosons, drastically changes the behavior of the dipolar condensate. For strong enough boson-fermion attraction, a dipolar Bose-Fermi droplet appears in the mixture, and as the attraction becomes stronger, a roton excitation develops in the Bogoliubov spectrum, leading to the formation of a supersolid, and eventually a crystal of isolated droplets. We describe the system by coupled extended Gross-Pitaevskii (bosons) and Hartree-Fock (fermions) equations. We study the excitation spectrum of the system and identify a number of Goldstone and Higgs modes in the supersolid regime.

Bose-Einstein condensation of heteronuclear bound states formed in a Fermi gas of two atomic species: microscopic approach

Abstract:We study a many-body system of interacting fermionic atoms of two species that are in thermodynamic equilibrium with their condensed heteronuclear bound states (molecules). In order to describe such an equilibrium state, we use a microscopic approach that involves the Bogoliubov model for a weakly interacting Bose gas and approximate formulation of the second quantization method in the presence of bound states of particles elaborated earlier by the authors. This microscopic approach is valid at low temperatures, when the average kinetic energy of all the components in the system is small in comparison with the bound state energy. The coupled equations, which relate the chemical potentials of fermionic components and molecular condensate density, are obtained within the proposed theory. At zero temperature, these equations are analyzed both analytically and numerically, attracting the relevant experimental data. We find the conditions at which a condensate of heteronuclear molecules coexists in equilibrium with degenerate components of a Fermi gas. The ground state energy and single-particle excitation spectrum are found. The boundaries of the applicability of the developed microscopic approach are analyzed.

Strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture: mediated interaction, phase diagram and sound propagation

Abstract:Motivated by recent surprising experimental findings, we develop a strong-coupling theory for Bose-Fermi mixtures capable of treating resonant inter-species interactions while satisfying the compressibility sum rule. We show that the mixture can be stable at large interaction strengths close to resonance, in agreement with the experiment but at odds with the widely used perturbation theory. We also calculate the sound velocity of the Bose gas in the $^{133}$Cs-$^6$Li mixture, again finding good agreement with the experimental observations both at weak and strong interactions. A central ingredient of our theory is the generalization of a fermion mediated interaction to strong Bose-Fermi scatterings and to finite frequencies. This further leads to a predicted hybridization of the sound modes of the Bose and Fermi gases, which can be directly observed using Bragg spectroscopy.

Abstract:We derive analytically the leading beyond-mean field contributions to the zero-temperature equation of state and to the fermionic quasi-particle residue and effective mass of a dilute Bose-Fermi mixture in two dimensions. In the repulsive case, we perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations for two representative bosonic concentrations and equal masses, extending a method for correcting finite-size effects in fermionic gases to Bose-Fermi mixtures. We find good agreement between analytic expressions and numerical results for weak interactions, while significant discrepancies appear in the regime close to mechanical instability, above which we provide evidence of phase separation of the bosonic component.
