Abstract:A new symbol timing synchronization scheme based on a tailored training sequence is proposed and implemented in direct modulation and direct detection optical OFDM PON (DM-DD OFDM PON) systems. This tailored training sequence is added in front of OFDM data symbols. By using the received signal correlation operation, receiver calculates the peak value of metrics to achieve accurate symbol timing synchronization. The performance of this new timing synchronization scheme is presented by simulation and experiment. The results show that the proposed scheme has high synchronization accuracy and is suit for DM-DD OFDM PON system.

Abstract:We show numerical simulation results of three different timing synchronization methods in Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM) system using Intensity-Modulation and Direct-Detection (IM/DD) in Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF) channel and do comparative study of the three algorithms. Based on Park's algorithm, we present a modification to it that can obtain higher time estimation accuracy in OOFDM system using IM/DD.

Recent Patents on Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Abstract:Recent patents and approaches of symbol timing and frequency offset estimation in optical OFDM systems are reviewed. The synchronization methods utilizing the training sequence or cyclic prefix are discussed and compared. The processing approaches includes subtraction, low-power DC offset, auto- and cross-correlation schemes.The synchronization methods have been evaluated in terms of the efficiency and complexity. It is shown that, by determining the optimal length of the non-zero pattern of the training sequence, synchronization algorithm using simplified auto-correlation scheme can achieve both of the accuracy and low complexity for optical OFDM systems. © 2013 Bentham Science Publishers.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an important technology for high-speed data transmission by virtue of its high spectral efficiency and robustness to multipath fading. These advantages can be achieved only with good synchronization both in time and frequency domain. For time synchronization, the cross-correlation based scheme can be combined with autocorrelation one to mitigate the ambiguity of the peak value while keeping a low computational complexity. Based on this structure, a simplified timing synchronization algorithm based on autocorrelation is presented in this paper. The symbol or frame timing is found by searching for a symbol in which the first half is identical to the second half in the time domain. The complexity is reduced by processing every Delta d samples rather than every sample. The probability of missing the training sequence and false detection is analyzed in AWGN channel. And the simulation results show that the complexity can be reduced effectively.

Abstract:A simple optical OFDM (OOFDM) synchronization technique utilizing subtraction and Gaussian windowing at the symbol rate is proposed and implemented in FPGA-based OOFDM receivers. End-to-end real-time symbol synchronization of 128-QAM-encoded OOFDM signals at raw bit rates of 6.56Gb/s is experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, over directly modulated DFB laser-based 25km SMF intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) systems. Experimental investigations show that the proposed synchronisation technique offers a number of salient advantages including low complexity, fast tracking speed, high accuracy and suitability for high-capacity optical transmission systems.

Abstract:As a key technology for the 4th generation wireless mobile communication system,OFDM has drawn more and more attention and much work has been done for its synchronization methods.The paper proposes an efficient symbol timing synchronization scheme for OFDM system which makes use of PN training sequences to overcome the shortcomings of the synchronization algorithm proposed by Schmidl&Cox.Based on the Schmidl&Cox algorithm,the proposed algorithm redesigns the first symbol of the training sequence and rearranges the front half part of the symbol using PN sequence.Theoretical analysis and simulation results indicate that the metric curve may generate a single pulse and avoids the presence of the plateau.The proposed scheme is very efficient,and compared with the conventional schemes,it not only has a better performance in frequency synchronization,but also is more accurate in symbol timing.

Abstract:A new symbol timing and carrier frequency synchronization scheme applicable to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system was presented.The OFDM symbol was divided into several parts.We used correlation and accumulation in several OFDM symbols to acquire estimation function for synchronization.When the length of part was smaller than that of ISI(Inter-symbol interference) free region,the estimator can distinguish it.Then optimal symbol timing and carrier frequency offset can be acquired.Analysis showed ML and Karthik algorithm were special cases of the presented method.The computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can track time varying channel condition and has much smaller MSE(mean square error) than that of ML estimation algorithms.

Abstract:It discussed about timing synchronization algorithm for OFDM system and performance. Taking the advantage of one way couple map lattices (OCML) model generated chaos sequences. Building a simulation model of OFDM system based on OCML-Masking symbol timing synchronization algorithm. Training sequence with symmetric construction was masked by OCML chaotic sequence. Recovering training sequence at receiver on exactly time accomplished OFDM timing synchronization. Analyzing the accuracy and anti-noise performance of this algorithm, the results showed that this algorithm had ideal accuracy and anti-noise performance, better short training sequence compatibility. Under 0dB SNR, training sequence of length 128 samples condition, its accuracy was still 100%. The system was more secure due to the application of OCML-M algorithm.

Abstract:this paper presents a time-frequency synchronization algorithm in MIMO-OFDM system based on the special known preamble symbol. Due to the high date rate in next generation system, the synchronization performance is affected by multipath channel. In the paper, the IFFT characteristic of some special code is applied in order to remove the affection partially or detail. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the estimator is robust in the wireless channel and can estimate the timing error and frequency offset of the system accurately. Moreover, the algorithm can be implemented in the real system simply.

Abstract:We analyze the signal-signal beating interference (SSBI) when optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) signal is directly detected by photodiode at the receiver. We propose a novel training sequence configuration to reduce SSBI. The experimental results show that the receiver sensitivity of the OFDM signal with the new training sequence at the BER of 1 x 10(-3) is 2.4 dB better than that with standard training sequence after transmission over 100 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) at a bit rate of 2.5 Gbit/s.

Abstract:In this paper, we gave a brief discussion of the expanded time and frequency OFDM (ETF-OFDM) system and its traditional synchronization method (the Schmidl's method). And then we present a rapid frame and symbol synchronization algorithm in this system for just detecting one training symbol instead of two training symbols in Schmidl's method. The algorithm has low calculation complexity and outperforms conventional synchronization methods.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel time and frequency synchronization technique is proposed for an M transmit and P receive (M脳P) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) – orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) system. The proposed technique is based on the assumption that each transmit antenna is with different time delay, which is more important in a practical system. Furthermore, it can be employed in distributed MIMO-OFDM system as well. In the proposed technique, different designed training sequence is proposed for fine time synchronization at each transmit antenna. Furthermore, in the time domain, the combination of all the training sequences can be divided into two identical parts so as to perform coarse time synchronization and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed technique can efficiently complete time and frequency in only one OFDM symbol with ideal performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a delay-locked loop (DLL) technique for performing a combined symbol and sampling clock synchronization in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In addition, we propose a symbol timing acquisition algorithm for the DLL. It is shown that by using this combined scheme, we can achieve symbol timing recovery and sampling clock adjustment simultaneously. In particular, the symbol timing estimation error variance can be decreased by several orders of magnitude compared with the common correlation methods in both the AWGN and multipath fading channels

Abstract:As higher symbol rates are utilized in the intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) scheme to meet the unrelenting growth of data traffic, overcoming the inter-symbol interference (ISI) induced by the limited bandwidth has become increasingly crucial. Channel equalization based on digital signal processing (DSP) is an effective solution, where least-mean squares (LMS) algorithm is adopted to adjust tap coefficients. However, the LMS algorithm usually has slow rate of convergence and requires lots of training symbols. This work proposes a novel training sequence to accelerate the LMS-based equalization. A first-order Markov chain (MC) is employed for sequence generation, which introduces correlation between samples and shapes signal spectrum. Compared with the conventional training sequence that consists of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) samples and has a white spectrum, the MC sequence enables faster convergence of tap coefficients and mean-squared error (MSE). Moreover, an experimental demonstration of a 43 Gbaud PAM-4 signal shows that the proposed sequence can achieve a lower pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) bit error rate (BER) than that of the i.i.d. sequence with the same length. When the PAM-4 signal is transmitted over a 5-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with 6-dB system bandwidth of 10 GHz, more than 70 training sequence length reduction can be attained. When the fiber length is increased to 10 km and the signal suffers from severe power fading, more than 48 reduction can be achieved.

Abstract:To overcome the serious influence of synchronization offset on OFDM systems, a novel timing and frequency synchronization algorithm for OFDM systems based on training sequence is proposed. The new timing metric and the estimation algorithm of fractional frequency offset are deduced based on the new structure of training sequence. The proposed timing algorithm eliminates the defect in conventional methods effectively, and the proposed method of frequency offset estimation has the same variance as Schmidl algorithm. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has good performance in both AWGN and multi-path fading channels.

Abstract:A novel synchronization scheme aiming at the special frame structure of China mobile multimedia broadcasting (CMMB) is presented in this paper. Based on the fact that CMMB system is very sensitive to the synchronization error, this scheme gives a solution which integrates high precision symbol timing recovery, carrier frequency recovery and sampling clock frequency recovery. Simulation results show that proposed algorithm can perform robustly at -2 dB SNR and TU6 channel with 300Hz Doppler frequency shift. The root mean square error (RMSE) of sampling clock frequency offset estimation and residual carrier frequency offset estimation is 50% less than that of conventional scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, a new data-aided joint timing and carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm in OFDM/OQAM system is proposed by utilizing identical central-symmetry ZC sequences before polyphase structure efficient implementation. Based on excellent auto-correlation performance of ZC sequence we derive a timing offset estimator with high accuracy and arbitrary capture range compared with two existed approaches. After the precision timing, a new frequency offset estimator is proposed by two parts, which considered both the identical and central-symmetry properties separately. Computer simulation indicates conspicuous performance improvement in timing offset and frequency offset estimation, especially in a AWGN channel which the proposed method possesses significant advantages while in multipath channel the new estimator can still reveal better performance when selecting the correct weighting factor.

Abstract:Based on the key technology of wireless communication systems-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), an efficient joint algorithm is proposed. We exploit a training sequence to estimate the integer frequency offset and channel parameters, and lower the peak-to-average power ratio by using the data of the training sequence as the coefficients of partial transmit sequence (PTS) algorithm. Results of simulations indicate that this method can simultaneously realize frequency synchronization, channel estimation and the low peak-to-average power ratio by using one training sequence. The OFDM system with the proposed algorithm has better BER performance and can be implemented with improved validity and reduced redundancy information.
