Abstract:Climate Change is one of the biggest challenges the human race is being encountered in this centaury. The continuous rise in average temperature, extreme weather occurrence, occurrence of drought and floods, intensity and frequency of storms, change in precipitation, and so many other identified and unidentified effects are giving birth. In upcoming years, the climate change would be more severe and challenging, and as a result, it would fetch the attention of whole world towards itself. In this scenario, the different policy options and techniques evolved to cope the climatic changes and its effects on society, economy and nature. The lack of response of carbon emitters in mitigation has aid to raise temperature continuously. This time adaptation is getting more and more attention to reduce the socio economic vulnerability and risks associated with the climate change. Adaptation is unavoidable. This paper enumerates the literature review of Adaptation. Although this term is not new but it has been focused in last few years as one of the key responses to climate change. How and why adaptation is necessary and its implications in coping the climate change challenges and what progress has been made in past and present.

Abstract:Adaptation plays an essential role in reducing climate damage and vulnerability these days, but has received insufficient academic supports. In recent research, frequently-mentioned household adaptation behaviors include technology adoption, climate migration and risk management. There are heterogeneous choices in household adaptation behaviors towards different climate factors. When faced with the slow-onset climate factors, household can not only respond to climate change immediately, but also make long-term adaptation decisions based on expected climatic conditions. As for the fast-onset climate factors, household adaptation behaviors are limited, normally short-term and passive. Besides, household adaptation behaviors are also constrained by adaptive capacity, varying across individuals or regions. In empirical research, thanks to increasingly available climate data, and advancing quantitative tools, the economic research make great progressin household adaptation these years. Nevertheless, there are still some unsettled challenges including assessing adaptation effectiveness, quantifying long-term adaptation,and exploring regional heterogeneity.We propose further research direction of household adaptation behaviors based on the literature review.

Abstract:To clarify the current situation, hotspots, and development trends, in the field of climate change adaptation, we analysed a massive literature dataset from the Web of Science database by bibliometric method. By characterising the data about each publication, the result indicate that the field of climate change adaptation has entered a stage of rapid development. The USA occupies a leading position in terms of comprehensive strength with the largest publications output as well as a greater influence therewith. The most productive journal, author, and institution are Climatic Change, Ford JD from Canada, and The Chinese Academy of Science, respectively. Collaboration in this field continues to strengthen, but the growth rates at national levels are relatively low. In addition, the frequency and co-occurrence analysis of keywords reveals ten important research topics: climate change, adaptation, vulnerability, ecosystem, socio-economic system, agriculture, region, extreme event, mitigation, and sustainability, as the foci of climate change adaptation. “Vulnerability” is in a core position in all keywords with the strongest betweenness therein. The results of this work will help researchers clarify the current situation in climate change adaptation science but also provide guidance for future research.

Abstract:Abstract Climate change adaptation responses are being developed and delivered in many parts of the world in the absence of detailed knowledge of their effects on public health. Here we present the results of a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature reporting the effects on health of climate change adaptation responses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The review used the ‘Global Adaptation Mapping Initiative’ database (comprising 1682 publications related to climate change adaptation responses) that was constructed through systematic literature searches in Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar (2013–2020). For this study, further screening was performed to identify studies from LMICs reporting the effects on human health of climate change adaptation responses. Studies were categorised by study design and data were extracted on geographic region, population under investigation, type of adaptation response and reported health effects. The review identified 99 studies (1117 reported outcomes), reporting evidence from 66 LMICs. Only two studies were ex ante formal evaluations of climate change adaptation responses. Papers reported adaptation responses related to flooding, rainfall, drought and extreme heat, predominantly through behaviour change, and infrastructural and technological improvements. Reported (direct and intermediate) health outcomes included reduction in infectious disease incidence, improved access to water/sanitation and improved food security. All-cause mortality was rarely reported, and no papers were identified reporting on maternal and child health. Reported maladaptations were predominantly related to widening of inequalities and unforeseen co-harms. Reporting and publication-bias seems likely with only 3.5% of all 1117 health outcomes reported to be negative. Our review identified some evidence that climate change adaptation responses may have benefits for human health but the overall paucity of evidence is concerning and represents a major missed opportunity for learning. There is an urgent need for greater focus on the funding, design, evaluation and standardised reporting of the effects on health of climate change adaptation responses to enable evidence-based policy action.

Abstract:The Arctic is experiencing rapid climate change impacts necessitating adaptation. This systematic literature review provides an overview of the recent climate change indicators necessitating adaptation and the actions implemented in response. Articles included in the review focused on communities across the Arctic and were published between the years 2000 and 2020. Through qualitative analysis of the literature, four indicators of climate change were presented through a social-ecological lens: (1) the degradation of ice, (2) changes in ecosystems, (3) changes in weather patterns, and (4) changes in hydrogeological risk. Further, three main types of adaptation were presented: (1) behavioral changes, (2) regulatory initiatives, and (3) changes to livelihoods or economics. Critically, most of these adaptation actions were implemented at an individual level.

Abstract:Assessing global progress on human adaptation to climate change is an urgent priority. Although the literature on adaptation to climate change is rapidly expanding, little is known about the actual extent of implementation. We systematically screened >48,000 articles using machine learning methods and a global network of 126 researchers. Our synthesis of the resulting 1,682 articles presents a systematic and comprehensive global stocktake of implemented human adaptation to climate change. Documented adaptations were largely fragmented, local and incremental, with limited evidence of transformational adaptation and negligible evidence of risk reduction outcomes. We identify eight priorities for global adaptation research: assess the effectiveness of adaptation responses, enhance the understanding of limits to adaptation, enable individuals and civil society to adapt, include missing places, scholars and scholarship, understand private sector responses, improve methods for synthesizing different forms of evidence, assess the adaptation at different temperature thresholds, and improve the inclusion of timescale and the dynamics of responses.

Abstract:Climate change is an ongoing challenge that creates a range of environmental challenges that countries will have to grapple with in the coming decades. Droughts will definitely occur, but climate change has largely exacerbated hydrological trends, making droughts start more rapidly and more intensely. This study looked at the measures and tactics used in South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Spain, and the United States to lessen the effects of drought. Adapting to climate change offers an opportunity to rethink some of the outstanding issues of tragedy reduction and ecosystem growth. This helps mitigate future climate change impacts and embrace options for such adaptation to climate change. The main impacts of climate change on drought vulnerability are public-based awareness-raising, revised timeframes and drought forecasting approaches, improved preparedness with a focus on drought monitoring and the creation of early warning systems, and all similar preparations are combined at the input level. Moreover, reactive approaches to drought remain prevalent in many countries, despite emergency funding being expensive, ineffective and failing to address long-term sources of vulnerability and lack of support. There is therefore an urgent need for a paradigm shift from crisis management to risk management, adopting a proactive approach based on standard risk mitigation and prevention. Additional efforts to embed local adaptation strategies into policies may increase local resilience to environmental change while contributing to broader development goals.

Abstract:The international community has made great efforts over the past decades to cope with global climate change. The Paris Agreement highlighted the exigency of &ldquor;holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.&rdquor; At present, however, the world’s most effort is devoted to the means of carbon emission reduction, while neglecting adaptation, the other half that &ldquor;cannot be neglected&rdquor; in the climate equation. A series of studies have proven the huge potential of nature-based and nature-adapted approaches in building a climate-resilient living environment. In recent years, naturebased green infrastructures and climate-adaptive sponge cities are receiving unprecedented attention. This also poses great challenges and opportunities for landscape architects to develop resilient climateadaptive green infrastructures by leveraging the power of nature through collaborative design with experts from the fields of Geography, Agriculture, Hydraulic Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

Abstract:Climate change, a global environmental phenomenon, is recognized as a major threat to survival of species and integrity of ecosystem world-wide. Adaptation strategies by species assemblages in an ecosystem are therefore aimed at reducing mortality, while they are expected to increase survival flexibilities of the species or group of species to a given climate variability scenario. These scenarios are known to impact directly and/or indirectly on the distribution, abundance, diversity, reproduction, growth and species composition. This paper reviews the adaptive strategies that will or are expected to enhance the survival of phytoplankton, zooplankton on and benthic communities/assemblages in the tropical and sub-tropical coastal waters, their community structure, life processes and roles in the ecosystem.

Abstract:Adaptation and mitigation are two main ways to address climate change. Adaptation is the process of adjustment to actual or expected climate change and its effects. In human systems, adaptation seeks to moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities; in natural systems, human interventions may speed up adjustment to the expected climate change and its effects. Mitigation involves human interventions to reduce emission sources or enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases. The objective of mitigation is to limit the global average temperature increase to a certain target above pre-industrial levels so as to reduce climate change risks and impacts. There are both synergies and trade-offs between adaptation and mitigation measures; adaptation and mitigation actions should be advanced within the framework of sustainable development.

Abstract:The sustainability of life on Earth is under increasing threat due to human-induced climate change. This perilous change in the Earth's climate is caused by increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, primarily due to emissions associated with burning fossil fuels. Over the next two to three decades, the effects of climate change, such as heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, storms, and floods, are expected to worsen, posing greater risks to human health and global stability. These trends call for the implementation of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Pollution and environmental degradation exacerbate existing problems and make people and nature more susceptible to the effects of climate change. In this review, we examine the current state of global climate change from different perspectives. We summarize evidence of climate change in Earth��s spheres, discuss emission pathways and drivers of climate change, and analyze the impact of climate change on environmental and human health. We also explore strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation and highlight key challenges for reversing and adapting to global climate change.

Abstract:Climate change pressures businesses to adapt, but knowledge on adaptation strategies remains fragmented. This systematic literature review addresses this gap by advancing the adaptation field in three ways. First, it expands the conceptualization of business adaptation strategies through a novel classification based on depth, time, locus, and tactic. Second, it identifies five key determinants influencing adaptation decisions: regulatory and stakeholder pressures, industry specificities, business network features, organizational capabilities, and individual characteristics. Finally, the review proposes a comprehensive framework with three tiers: 1) determinants at various levels, 2) types of adaptation strategies, and 3) adaptation impacts. This framework offers novel research avenues for scholarship and enables a more nuanced assessment of the impact of adaptation strategies. Additionally, a 'reverse roadmap' is proposed to help practitioners and policymakers navigate from desired adaptation outcomes back to current choices, increasing resilience while limiting maladaptation risks.

Abstract:Climate change adaptation research is currently a policy priority. For smallholder farmers, it provides opportunities for resilience building. The research area is growing rapidly and calls to synthesize existing data have been made. Existing work forms a basic picture of the trends in the research area. However, it is limited in scope and methodological approaches used. This work synthesizes climate change adaptation research on smallholder farmers in Southern Africa. It gives an overview of past and current directions of climate change adaptation research using a combination of bibliometric analysis techniques and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. Results show a steady growth in research, a disproportionate distribution of research and weak research collaboration among Southern African countries. Diverse methodologies are in use but a combination of approaches is rare. Co-occurrence of keywords show recognizable strides in research ranging from adaptation to mitigation linkages to the influence of climate change impacts on adaptation and livelihood outcomes. Strengthened research collaboration between countries in Southern Africa should be advocated for. This would help develop viable, appropriate and localized adaptation solutions. Equitable allocation of funding is pertinent to ensure uniform research activity and adaptation action across the region. A combination of research approaches is needed to push forward adaptation research on smallholder farmers in Southern Africa.

Abstract:This review seeks to enhance the understanding of the critical concepts of vulnerability, adaptation, and resilience within the context of global environmental challenges, with a particular focus on climate change. Climate change is characterized by rising global temperatures and an increase in extreme weather events, making the comprehension and addressing of these concepts crucial for effective adaptation strategies. Despite widespread recognition of the interconnectedness of vulnerability, adaptation, and resilience, there remains a gap in a comprehensive understanding of how these concepts interrelate. Through synthesizing existing literature, this review provides a detailed examination of their definitions and the interrelationships among vulnerability, adaptation, resilience, and climate-related disasters. Additionally, it explores the impact of climate change on future disaster risk reduction efforts by analyzing the nexus between climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Key findings highlight the necessity of incorporating social, institutional, economic, and environmental factors into adaptation planning and call for innovative approaches to boost adaptive capacity and resilience. This review not only furthers the discourse in research, policy, and practice in this vital area but also offers strategic insights for developing more resilient and adaptive societies amidst the challenges posed by climate change.

Abstract:Research on climate change has increased significantly since the 1970s. There has also been a particular focus on Africa, given its vulnerability to climate change impacts and its urbanization trends that may have massive implications for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Despite the wealth of publications on climate change in Africa, there is a lack of review studies that highlight the overall research landscape. If this status of climate research is clarified, African countries can better deal with climate change. Hence, this paper aims to improve our understanding of the status and trends of research on climate change adaptation and mitigation in Africa. Our review, straddling from 1990 to late 2021, recognizes the foundations that underpin climate change adaptation and mitigation literature. Based on keywords associated with Africa's climate change adaptation and mitigation, we undertook bibliometric research by collecting 3,316 related SCI/SSCI articles. In addition, we provided a thematic evolution over three decades, compartmentalized into four sub-periods (1990–2007; 2008–2014; 2015–2019; 2020–2021). Priority research topics and themes have been dynamic over time, with some core concepts receiving more attention (vulnerability, food, water, and energy security). Although the number of published articles exhibited a rapidly growing trend, their distribution is extremely uneven. Articles were mainly published by institutions from certain parts of the continent, with the University of Cape Town, making the highest contribution. About 72% of the existing studies focused on climate change adaptation, while climate change mitigation was less represented with 22%. The results also showed that researchers have examined not all African countries. South Africa, Ethiopia, and Ghana are hot spots, while most countries are largely neglected. Africa and African countries need to improve their future research ability on climate change mitigation. Assessing climate change risks and measures in African countries should be prioritized.
Public participation, engagement, and climate change adaptation: A review of the research literature

Abstract:There is a clear need for a state‐of‐the‐art review of how public participation in climate change adaptation is being considered in research across academic communities: The Rio Declaration developed in 1992 at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) included explicit goals of citizen participation and engagement in climate actions (Principle 10). Nation states were given special responsibility to facilitate these by ensuring access to information and opportunities to participate in decision‐making processes. Since then the need for public participation has featured prominently in calls to climate action. Using text analysis to produce a corpus of abstracts drawn from Web of Science, a review of literature incorporating public participation and citizen engagement in climate change adaptation since 1992 reveals lexical, temporal, and spatial distribution dynamics of research on the topic. An exponential rise in research effort since the year 2000 is demonstrated, with the focus of research action on three substantial themes—risk, flood risk, and risk assessment, perception, and communication. These are critically reviewed and three substantive issues are considered: the paradox of participation, the challenge of governance transformation, and the need to incorporate psycho‐social and behavioral adaptation to climate change in policy processes. Gaps in current research include a lack of common understanding of public participation for climate adaptation across disciplines; incomplete articulation of processes involving public participation and citizen engagement; and a paucity of empirical research examining how understanding and usage of influential concepts of risk, vulnerability and adaptive capacity varies among different disciplines and stakeholders.
