Abstract:Mixed-valance manganites with strong electron correlation exhibit strong potential for spintronics, where emergent magnetic behaviors, such as propagation of high-frequency spin waves and giant topological Hall Effects can be driven by their mesoscale spin textures. Here, we create magnetic vortex clusters with flux closure spin configurations in single-crystal La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 wire. A distinctive transformation from out-of-plane domains to a vortex state is directly visualized using magnetic force microscopy at 4 K in wires when the width is below 1.0 μm. The phase-field modeling indicates that the inhomogeneous strain, accompanying with shape anisotropy, plays a key role for stabilizing the flux-closure spin structure. This work offers a new perspective for understanding and manipulating the non-trivial spin textures in strongly correlated systems.

Abstract:By studying the dipolar interaction and the elastic interaction in the ordered magnetic nanoparticle chains connected by or imbedded in organic medium, we predict a Peierls-like structural phase transition under proper conditions. The phase transition can be induced by applying a transverse magnetic field and manifests itself in the magnetization curve measurements. The magnetic effect of the Peierls phase and of the magnetoelastic coupling is also reflected in the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetic nanoparticles chains. A phase diagram of the nanoparticle chain structure has also been established.

Abstract:Being able to tune magnetic anisotropy (MA) by an electric field is crucial for the development of low-power magnetoelectric devices. The authors present an approach for tuning the MA of a manganite film by modulating the crystal phase of a cobaltite cap layer. By driving the cap layer to switch between SrCoO${}_{2.5}$ and SrCoO${}_{3\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ structures, reversible tuning of MA between two crystal directions was achieved for the manganite layer, accompanying a change in Mn $3d$ orbital occupancy. This work demonstrates indirect tuning of the magnetic easy axis of this highly spin-polarized manganite, providing guidance for constructing electrically tunable magnetoelectric devices.

Abstract:Tuning the magnetic anisotropy of metal ions remains highly interesting in the design of improved single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein report synthetic, structural, magnetic, and computational studies of four mononuclear Co-II complexes, namely [Co(hfac)(2)(MeCN)(2)] (1), [Co(hfac)(2)(Spy)(2)] (2), [Co(hfac)(2)(MBIm)(2)] (3), and [Co(hfac)(2)(DMF)(2)] (4) (MeCN=acetonitrile, hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetone, Spy=4-styrylpyridine, MbIm=5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with distorted octahedral geometry constructed from hexafluoroacetylacetone (hfac) and various axial ligands. By a building block approach, complexes 2-4 were synthesized by recrystallization of the starting material of 1 from various ligands containing solution. Magnetic and theoretical studies reveal that 1-4 possess large positive D values and relative small E parameters, indicating easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with significant rhombic anisotropy in 1-4. Dynamic alternative current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that these complexes exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, suggesting field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) of 1-4. These results provide a promising platform to achieve fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy through varying the axial ligands based on Co(II) bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) complexes.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropy is essential for permanent magnets to maintain their magnetization along specific directions. Understanding and controlling the magnetic anisotropy on a single-molecule scale are challenging but of fundamental importance for the future's spintronic technology. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we demonstrated the ability to control the magnetic anisotropy by tuning the ligand field at the single-molecule level. We constructed a molecular magnetic complex with a single Mn atom and an organic molecule (4,4'-biphenyldicarbonitrile) as a ligand via atomic manipulation. Inelastic tunneling spectra (IETS) show that the Mn complex has much larger axial magnetic anisotropy than individual Mn atoms, and the anisotropy energy can be tuned by the coupling strength of the ligand. With density functional theory calculations, we revealed that the enhanced magnetic anisotropy of Mn arising from the carbonitrile ligand provides a prototype for the engineering of the magnetism of quantum devices.

Abstract:Summary Precise modulation of the magnetic anisotropy of metal ions remains highly important for the development of high–performance single‐molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein reported the synthetic, structural, spectral, magnetic, and computational studies on four mononuclear CoII complexes in a distorted octahedral environment. The change of the organosulfonate anions triggers significant modification of the distorted octahedral CoN6 coordination sphere, which enables us to tackle the influence of the structural distortion on the magnetic anisotropy in these complexes. Magnetic measurements revealed that the four complexes possess easy–plane magnetic anisotropy with large and positive zero‐field splitting parameters, which decrease with the increasing distortion of the pseudo–octahedral CoII coordination geometry. This correlation was further confirmed by high–frequency/–field EPR (HF–EPR) spectra and theoretical calculations. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that these complexes both exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external dc field, indicating the field‐induced single‐ion magnets (SIMs) of the four complexes. These results indicate that structural distortion plays an important role in the magnetic anisotropy of CoII complexes and should be carefully considered in the design of molecular complexes with high magnetic anisotropy. The Magnetic Properties of Mixed One-Dimensional Ferrimagnetic Spin Chain with Complex Arrangement

Abstract:Based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, the magnetization behavior of one-dimensional mixed ferrimagnetic spin chain with complex arrangement and single-ion anisotropy under external field are investigated. It is assumed that the element of the mixed spin chain is composed of n1A parallel spins with S1=1 and n2B parallel spins with S2=32. The simulated results indicate that l magnetization plateaus appear at the ground state as the external field increases from zero to its saturation value. In the mean time, it is found that l is the integer part of n1AS1+n2BS2+1. For different anisotropy value D, there exist the degenerate states where the magnetizations are same while the corresponding spin configurations are different. Moreover, the calculated results in terms of the simple calculation of energy are associated with those simulated by MC method.

Abstract:Magnetite nanoclusters with an average size of about 120 nm have been prepared and allowed to self-assemble into one-dimensional (1D) nanochain structures with the average length about of 2 mu m by a simple magnetic-field-induced (MFI) assembly approach (0.20 T). The constituent, phase, and morphology of these I D nanochains have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetic measurement reveals that these I D nanochains are weakly ferromagnetic at room temperature. In this paper, we discuss the influence of magnetization time and strength of external magnetic field on the formation of I D nanochains. We also show that, by changing the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the starting materials, I D nanochains with different interparticle spacing can be obtained. This I D nanochain structure with different interparticle spacing would be an ideal system for the further study of magnetization properties of ID ordered magnetic nanostructures.

Abstract:Three two-dimensional Co-II complexes, namely, [Co(dps)(2)Cl-2](n) (1), [Co(dps)(2)Br-2](n) (2), and [Co(dps)(2)(H2O)(2) center dot I-2 center dot(H2O)(4)](n) (3) (where dps = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide), have been synthesized using a rationally designed synthetic approach and characterized structurally and magnetically. Although they crystallize in different space groups, these compounds all have similar two-dimensional (4,4) layer structures where the Co2+ centers are bridged by the bis.monodentate) ligand dps. In addition, the coordination geometry of the Co2+ centers is of a general CoN4X2 octahedral environment formed by four equatorial N atoms from four dps ligands and two X atoms (X = Cl, Br, and O atoms for 1-3, respectively) in the axial positions. Ab initio calculations revealed that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the spin Hamiltonian containing the zero-field splitting parameters D and E cannot be used to describe their magnetic anisotropy. According to the calculation, the g(z) values for the spin-orbit ground doublets of 1-3 are larger than the g(x) and g(y) values, which indicates the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of these compounds. Due to the existence of the magnetic anisotropy, field-induced single-ion magnet behavior can be observed in all these complexes. This work illustrated that care should be taken to interpret the magnetic data of octahedral Co-II compounds. In addition, extended frameworks with long and flexible organic spacers are good candidates for the construction of SIMs with different axial ligands and different magnetic properties.

Abstract:Nanoscale single-domain bar magnets are building blocks for a variety of fundamental and applied mesoscopic magnetic systems, such as artificial spin ices, magnetic shape-morphing microbots, and magnetic majority logic gates. The magnetization reversal switching field of the bar nanomagnets is a crucial parameter that determines the physical properties and functionalities of their constituted artificial systems. Previous methods on tuning the magnetization reversal switching field of a bar nanomagnet usually relied on modifying its aspect ratio, such as its length, width, and/or thickness. Here, we show that the switching field of a bar nanomagnet saturates when extending its length beyond a certain value, preventing further tailoring of the magnetization reversal via aspect ratios. We showcase a highly tunable switching field of a bar nanomagnet by tailoring its end geometry without altering its size. This provides an easy method to control the magnetization reversal of a single-domain bar nanomagnet. It would enable new research and/or applications, such as designing artificial spin ices with additional tuning parameters, engineering magnetic microbots with more flexibility, and developing magnetic quantum-dot cellular automata systems for low power computing.

Abstract:The synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of a family of air-stable star-shaped Co(II)Co(III)3 complexes were investigated. These complexes contain only one paramagnetic Co(II) ion with the approximate D3 coordination environment in the center and three diamagnetic Co(III) ions in the peripheral. Magnetic studies show their slow magnetic relaxation in the absence of an applied dc field, which is characteristic behavior of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), caused by the individual Co(II) ion with approximate D3 symmetry in the center. Most importantly, it was demonstrated that the anisotropy energy barrier can be finely tuned by the periphery substituent of the ligand and the countercation. The anisotropy energy barrier can be increased significantly from 38 K to 147 K.

Abstract:Ferrotoroidal order, which represents a spontaneous arrangement of toroidal moments, has recently been found in a few linear magnetoelectric materials. However, tuning toroidal moments in these materials is challenging. Here, we report switching between ferritoroidal and ferrotoroidal phases by a small magnetic field, in a chiral triangular-lattice magnet BaCoSiO 4 with tri-spin vortices. Upon applying a magnetic field, we observe multi-stair metamagnetic transitions, characterized by equidistant steps in the net magnetic and toroidal moments. This highly unusual ferri-ferroic order appears to come as a result of an unusual hierarchy of frustrated isotropic exchange couplings revealed by first principle calculations, and the antisymmetric exchange interactions driven by the structural chirality. In contrast to the previously known toroidal materials identified via a linear magnetoelectric effect, BaCoSiO 4 is a qualitatively new multiferroic with an unusual coupling between several different orders, and opens up new avenues for realizing easily tunable toroidal orders.

Abstract:The magnetic relaxation and magnetization blocking barriers of butterfly complexes, [Dy2Zn2(L)(4)(NO3)(2)( CH3OH)(2)] (1), [Dy2Mn2(L)(4)(NO3)(2)(DMF)(2)] (2) and [Dy2Co2(L)(4)(NO3)(2)(DMF)(2)]center dot 2DMF (3) (H2L = (E)-2-ethoxy-6-(((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol), were systematically investigated. The change of SMM behavior originating from the purposeful replacement of two Zn-II sites in 1 with Mn-II and Co-II was elucidated by a combined experimental and theoretical study. The quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) was observed in 1. Contrarily, it was quenched in 2 and 3 by spin-spin exchange. A detailed comparative study on these closely-related model complexes reveals the remarkable changes of the ligand field splitting, anisotropy of the Dy-coordinated moiety and the total exchange spectrum due to the replacement of Zn-II with Co-II and Mn-II.

Abstract:Tuning magnetic anisotropy via perturbing the coordination environment of metal ions is of great importance for developing high-performance single-ion magnets (SIMs). We herein reported the syntheses and characterization of four one-dimensional cobalt(II) coordination polymers featuring distorted tetrahedral metal center, namely {[Co(pdms)(bpy)]bpy}n (Cobpy), {[Co(pdms)(bpen)]}n (Cobpen), {[Co(pdms)(bpdoz)]H2O}n (Cobpdoz), and {[Co(pdms)(bimp)]2DMF3H2O}n (Cobimp) (bpy = 4,4 '-bipyridine, bpen = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpdoz = 2,5- di(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, bimp = 1,4-bis[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzene). By the assembly of [Co(pdms)2](2+) anions and different organic bridging ligands, the chains with highly anisotropic four-coordinate Co(II) ions exhibit a significant modification of the structures, especially the tetrahedral coordination sphere. Notably, the two angle N-Co-N bite angles, which mainly determine the magnetic anisotropy of tetrahedral mononuclear cobalt complexes, were significantly changed due to the use of different organic linkers. Magnetic measurements reveal that the four complexes possess uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters D being -39.7, -32.1, -23.8, and -43.4 cm(-1) for Cobpy, Cobpen, Cobpdoz, and Cobimp, respectively. This observation and their electronic structures were further unveiled by theoretical calculations. Dynamic alternative current magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that both the chains exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external field, indicating field-induced slow magnetic relaxation of the coordination polymers (1D SIM-CPs). Notably, the relaxation behaviors are also modified due to the structural differences induced by distinct linkers. The foregoing results not only enrich the family of 1D SIM-CPs showing low-coordinated metal centers but also offer a coordination chain platform for tuning magnetic anisotropy of four-coordinate Co(II) ions in 1D chains.
Field-Induced Single-Ion Magnet Behaviour in Two New Cobalt(II) Coordination Polymers with 2,4,6-Tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine

Abstract:We herein reported the syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional coordination polymer {[CoII(TPT)2/3(H2O)4][CH3COO]2·(H2O)4}n (1) and a chain compound {[CoII(TPT)2(CHOO)2(H2O)2]}n (2) based on the 2,4,6-Tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) ligand. Structure analyses showed that complex 1 had a cationic hexagonal framework structure, while 2 was a neutral zig-zag chain structure with different distorted octahedral coordination environments. Magnetic measurements revealed that both complexes exhibit large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting parameter D = 47.7 and 62.1 cm−1 for 1 and 2, respectively. This magnetic anisotropy leads to the field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour. However, their magnetic dynamics are quite different; while complex 1 experienced a dominating thermally activated Orbach relaxation at the whole measured temperature region, 2 exhibited multiple relaxation pathways involving direct, Raman, and quantum tunneling (QTM) processes at low temperatures and Orbach relaxation at high temperatures. The present complexes enlarge the family of framework-based single-ion magnets (SIMs) and highlight the significance of the structural dimensionality to the final magnetic properties.

Abstract:Mn-based alloys can exhibit a variety of magnetic properties related to their tunable exchange interactions. In this work, structural and magnetic properties of hexagonal NiAs-type MnxSb (1.00 <= x <= 1.30) compounds are studied with a combination of X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and magnetic measurements. It is found that the magnetization, Curie temperature, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of MnxSb compounds can be tuned by controlling Mn concentration and doping at interstitial (2d) sites. With increasing Mn concentration, magnetic moments of Mn atoms decrease and deviate gradually from the ab-plane to the c-axis for 1.20 <= x <= 1.22 at room temperature, which leads to a decrease of the Curie temperature T-c and the spin reorientation temperature T-SR. By doping with nonmagnetic elements, a substantial room-temperature magnetocaloric effect without magnetic hysteresis was achieved for Mn1.12Zr0.1Sb compound, which is highly beneficial to the practical magnetic refrigeration application. Abstract:With continuous variable composition, an artificial pseudomorphic template of 1 ML Cu1-xAux was achieved by epitaxial growth on Cu(001), in which the magnetic anisotropy and the spin reorientation transition of Ni films were investigated in situ. The result clearly indicates that the strain induced protruding nanostructures at the interface dominates in tuning the magnetic anisotropy. while the interface chemistry plays a minor role. Abstract:An organometallic single-ion magnet is synthesized with only 19 non-hydrogen atoms featuring an erbium ion sandwiched by two different aromatic ligands. This molecule displays a butterfly-shaped hysteresis loop at 1.8 K up to even 5 K. Alternating-current (ac) susceptibility measurement reveals the existence of two thermally activated magnetic relaxation processes with the energy barriers as high as 197 and 323 K, respectively.
