Abstract:Effects of temperature on the development, survival, reproduction, longevity and sex ratio of the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, was assessed at five constant temperatures ranging from 20 to 35 degrees C and five fluctuating temperatures ranging from 15 to 40 degrees C under laboratory conditions. Results showed that nymphal development duration, preoviposition period, oviposition period, fecundity, and adult longevity were reduced significantly with increasing temperature until 30 degrees C, but developmental duration of third female nymphal instar and female adult longevity was longer at 35 degrees C than 30 degrees C, and no males could emerge from pupae at the constant temperature 35 degrees C. Fluctuating temperature, in general, significantly accelerated the nymphal developmental duration, prolonged preoviposition period, shortened oviposition period, reduced fecundity, lowered the survival rate of nymphs, and decreased adult longevity of males and females compared to their mean corresponding constant temperature. Overall, it is suggested that one should be prudent when applying the obtained results under constant and fluctuating temperatures under laboratory conditions.

Abstract:Authors have treated more than 20 silkworm races with 34deg C and RH80% during the embryo stage of post end reversion. The results of test indicated that the larval period of some race was changed, most of larval weight became lighter, whole cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight and output clearly decreased. But it had no apparent effect on healthiness, silk quality and ratio of cocoon shell. And the degree of influence on growth and development and economic characters caused by high temperature is different between pure races. Compared with pure race, the influence on hybrid is less.

Abstract:Pink bollworm (PBW) Pectinophora gossypiella is an important pest cotton worldwide. There are multiple factors which determines the occurrence and distribution of P. gossypiella across different cotton growing regions of the world, and one such key factor is 'temperature'. The aim was to analyze the life history traits of PBW across varying temperature conditions. We systematically explored the biological and demographic parameters of P. gossypiella at five distinct temperatures; 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ± 1 °C maintaining a photoperiod of LD 16:8 h. The results revealed that the total developmental period of PBW shortens with rising temperatures, and the highest larval survival rates were observed between 30 °C and 35 °C, reaching 86.66% and 80.67%, respectively. Moreover, significant impacts were observed as the pupal weight, percent mating success, and fecundity exhibited higher values at 30 °C and 35 °C. Conversely, percent egg hatching, larval survival, and adult emergence were notably lower at 20 °C and 40 °C, respectively. Adult longevity decreased with rising temperatures, with females outliving males across all treatments. Notably, thermal stress had a persistent effect on the F1 generation, significantly affecting immature stages (egg and larvae), while its impact on reproductive potential was minimal. These findings offer valuable insights for predicting the population dynamics of P. gossypiella at the field level and developing climate-resilient management strategies in cotton.

Abstract:The influence of temperature on growth and development of Chelonus pectinophorae Cushman were determined under laboratory conditions. Results indicated that the developmental zero and effective accumulated temperatures of C. pectinophorae was 11.8 ℃ and 276.1 ℃ for egg-larval stage, 13.8 ℃ and 119.9 ℃ for pupal stage. In the range of 20—36 ℃, the life parameters such as the egg-larval duration, pupal weight, pupation rate and emergence rate of C. spectinophorae increased and then decreased with temperature increase. It has the shortest larval duration, the heaviest pupal weight, the highest pupation and emergence rate and fertility at 28 ℃, indicating that the optimum temperature is 28 ℃. These results are of significance for the mass rearing of C. pectinophoraeand biocontrol against pests in the field.

Abstract:This study aims to study the effect of high temperature on pollen activity and pollen development in boll stage, make clear the appropriate temperature of pollen germination, explore the germination rate and study the relationship between pollen germination rate, the boll setting rate and boll weight, and the relationship between the antioxidant enzyme activity in anther and heat tolerance.Heat tolerance and heat sensibility upland cotton varieties were selected, and their pollen were cultured in vitro at 26℃, 28℃, 30℃, 32℃, 34℃ and 36℃ from bud stage to flowering stage.And the flowers which were used for determining pollen germination percentage were labeled at the same stage.The labeled flowers of heat-tolerance and-sensitive cultivars were used to determine boll setting rate and boll weight after harvesting.The results showed that the culture temperatures of pollen germination in vitro were significantly different.30℃ was the optimum temperature for pollen germination.Pollen of bud stage was more sensitive to high temperature compared with the effect of diurnal high temperature on pollen grains vigor.High temperature of ten days during the period of boll development would hinder the pollen development, resulting in decrease of pollen germination percentage.Pollen vigor would affect the cotton yield and boll setting rate.The enzyme activity of POD, CAT and APX of anther during high temperature period increased.The cultivar (lines) with higher contents of POD, CAT and APX had stronger heat tolerance.The ability of the upland cotton to resist high temperature stress was related to the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Abstract:The development,longevity,fecundity and survivorship of Bemisia tabaci biotype B on Cucumis sativas L.(Beijing 202)at 7 constant temperatures(18,21,24,27,30,33 and 36℃) and 3 humidity(55%,75% and 95% RH) were studied.It showed that the developmental periods had 33.6 d from egg to adult at 18℃,and decreased as temperature increased.At 33℃ it takes 14.4 d to complete the period.The optimal range of temperature for B. tabaci biotype B development was from 27 to 33℃.The total survivorship of egg and larva was highest at 27℃.Extremely low and high temperature delayed the development and survivorship.Longevity of adult was shortened as temperature increased,varied from 41.3 to 10.4 at the range of 18-36℃,while the same changes happened in the fecundity per female.The total survivorship of egg and larva was highest(77.8%) at 75% RH.Longevity of adult was 27.5,31.2 and 15.7 d and fecundity was 264.3,220.0 and 110.4 per female at 55%, 75% and 95% RH respectively.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) is an important pest of cucurbit crops and certain vegetables in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Hawaii. Most studies on B. cucurbitae have focussed on the effects of prolonged high temperature and very few have examined the effects of short-term exposures to high-temperature on behaviour.RESULTS:In this study, short-term of high-temperature treatments of 33°C, 37°C, 41°C and 45°C were maintained for 1-3hr, and long-term, variable high-temperature treatments were established that consisted of experienced one, two and three times high temperatures stages to 31°C, 33°C, 34°C, 35°C, 36°C, 37°C, 41°C and 45°C for 7hr. We compared the effects of the different high temperatures regimes changes treatments on the mating, oviposition and thermotactic taxis of the flies. The results showed that exposure to a 45°C/1hr treatment, delayed both initiation of mating and oviposition for 8 hr relative to the control but mating and was observed 41 times and oviposition 47 times. By comparison, in the control, mating commenced immediately and was observed 38.3 times and oviposition was observed 41.3 times. Under the other treatments, all the indices for the flies declined with the increase in temperature and duration of exposure.CONCLUSION:Results showed that 1hr of exposure to 45°C significantly stimulated mating, oviposition and thermotactic behaviour of the flies. These results could improve our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the population dynamics of B. cucurbitae during the high-temperature season.

Abstract:Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner, 1808) is a significant global agricultural pest, particularly posing a major threat during the boll-forming stage of cotton. In recent years, the severity of its damage has increased markedly, and its population dynamics and biological characteristics may be profoundly affected by global climate change. This study conducted a systematic meta-analysis to evaluate the life history traits of H. armigera under conditions of rising global temperatures, different photoperiods, and humidity levels. A comprehensive analysis of 26 related studies revealed that different developmental stages of H. armigera have distinct temperature requirements. When the temperature is within an optimal range (32 °C to 35 °C), the development rate of H. armigera accelerates, the life cycle shortens, and the reproductive capacity of female moths increases. However, when the temperature exceeds 35 °C, development slows, mortality rates increase, and the oviposition of female moths decreases significantly, indicating a negative impact of high temperatures on growth and reproduction. Overall, as the temperature rises above 20 °C, various physiological indicators of H. armigera significantly improve, and at 32 °C, the larval development period and overall life cycle reach their shortest duration. This meta-analysis provides new insights into the biological responses of H. armigera in the context of climate change and offers a scientific basis for future control strategies.

Abstract:[Objective] To study the effects of temperature hardening on survival and reproduction of Bemisia tabaci Q biotype under high temperature stress.[Method] The survival rate,longevity and reproduction were evaluated by exposing Q biotype adults to 45 ℃ for 1h,and 10,33 and 39 ℃ for 0.5 h prior to 45 ℃ for 1 h in climatic incubators,and then feeding them at 26 ℃,respectively.[Result] While there was no significant change in fecundity,cold hardening shortened longevity,which help to maintain the population by increasing the survival rate.Heat hardening decreased the survival rate,and the population was maintained at a certain level due to extension of female longevity.[Conclusion] After hardening at different temperatures,population dynamics was highly related to the tradeoff between changes of the survival rate,longevity and fecundity.

Abstract:The pea leafminer, Liriomyza huidobrensis, is one of the most important economic insect pests around the world. Its population fluctuates greatly with seasonal change in China, and temperature was thought to be one of the important reasons. In attempt to further explore the impact of disadvantageous temperature on L. huidobrensis, 1-day-old adults were shocked at various temperatures (10, 25, 32, and 35°C, respectively) for 4h, and the effects on thermotolerance, feeding, and fecundity were studied. Meanwhile the expression of five heat shock genes (hsp90, 70, 60, 40, and 20) was examined by real-time quantitative PCR. Our results showed that both 32 and 35°C hardenings remarkably increased adult heat resistance, whereas cold tolerance was not improved accordingly. No cross resistance in response to cold and heat stresses was observed. Both adult feeding and fecundity were dramatically reduced, but no effect was observed on egg hatching, larval survival, pupal eclosion, or sex ratio. The results indicate that the deleterious effect on fecundity is the result of direct cessation of oviposition during the period of stress. Simultaneously, the mRNA levels of hsp70 and hsp20 significantly increased upon thermal hardening. Taken together, our results suggest that mild heat hardening improves thermotolerance of L. huidobrensis at the cost of impairment on fecundity, and the induced expression of hsp70 and hsp20 may play an important role in balancing the functional tradeoff.

Abstract:[Objective]The present experiment was conducted to study the effect of temperature on developmental and reproductive stages of Bactrocera cucurbitae population(Coquillett) in order to provide basic information for its integrated control.[Method]The B.cucurbitae populations were artificially fed at five constant temperatures(15,20,25,30 and 35℃) and the development,reproduction and their survival rates were determined by artificial feeding method during various developmental stages.[Result]The threshold temperatures for the development of eggs,larva,pupa,pre-oviposition period and generation of B.cucurbitae were 10.56,7.33,10.77,9.72 and 10.77℃ respectively,and the effective accumulated temperature of them were 12.68,117.91,107.15,364.43 and 602.17 d·℃,respectively.The pupa could not survived at 35℃.The female adults were found to produced maximum eggs(1428.3 eggs per female) under the condition of 25℃,while minimum egg production(240.3 eggs per female) was recorded at 15℃.The population trend indices of B.cucurbitae was recorded over 1,and it was recorded as maximum(447.37) at 25℃,followed by 301.19 at 30℃.[Conclusion]The B.cucurbitae population was found to be developed normally in the range of 15~30℃,which was the optimum temperature for its development and reproduction.

Abstract:Bactrocera cucurbitae is a major pest of fruit and its reproductive capacity is greatly affected by high temperature. Utilizing ovarian dissection and transcriptome to examine the reproductive biology, we determined that the reproductive capacity of this species is enhanced after exposure for 1 h to 45 degrees C. The total number of eggs, daily number of eggs, preoviposition period and egg-hatching rate of flies exposed to the high temperature treatment were 693 eggs, 20.4 eggs/d, 6 d and 63.5% versus 666 eggs, 9.6 eggs/d, 11.7d and 96.3%, respectively, in control held at 25 degrees C for 1 h. The egg-hatching rate was lower than in control, but their ovaries matured in only 6 d versus 12 d in the control. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that after exposure for 1 h to 45 degrees C, 37 degrees C, 25 degrees C, a sequence of 14,492,121,840 nucleotide and 46,826 uniques were screened, and six target genes were involved in oviposition. As temperatures increased, expression levels of Vg-1, Vg-2 and JH-epoxide hydrolase-2 initially increased and subsequently decreased, but the expression of Vg-3 continued to increase there-after. The Vg-receptor which first decreased but then increased.

Abstract:Temperature is an important environmental factor affecting the growth and development of silkworm (Bombyx mori). To analyze the effect of intestinal microbes on silkworm in response to a high-temperature environment, this study used a combination of high throughput sequencing and biochemical assays to detect silkworm intestinal microbes treated with high temperature for 72 h. The results show that high temperature affects the intestinal microbes of silkworm and that there are sex differences, specifically, females were more sensitive. The changes in the metabolism and transport ability of silkworm intestinal tissues under high temperature are related to the intestinal microbes. High temperatures may affect the intestinal microbes of silkworms, regulating the activity of related digestive enzymes and substance transport in the intestine, thereby affecting the silkworm's digestion and absorption of nutrients, and ultimately affecting growth and development.

Abstract:The development and reproduction of the black cutworm at seven different temperature(16℃,19℃,22℃,25℃,28℃,31℃,34℃)were studied in laboratory.The results showed that the growth speed of the black cutworm was quick and the development duration was short with the rising of the temperature,the growth speed of eggs,instars and pupae began to slow down at 31℃.The female to male ratio declined with rising of the temperature.At over low or high temperature,the black cutworm adults longevity were shorten,livability and oviposition would decline.This indicated that low temperature and high temperature all made against the growth of the black cutworm.25℃ was the best temperature for the black cutworm's growth and reproduction.The development threshold temperature and effective accumulated temperature of the black cutworm for the whole generation were 10.74℃ and 620.64 degree-day,respectively.

Abstract:The effect of temperatures on the developmental time and fecundity of Tetranychus urticae Koch on kidney bean was (studied). The results showed that the developmental time, the female longevity and oviposition period decreased with temperature (increase). The ovipositing number per day was lowest at 19℃. The lower thresholds of a development of a generation for (female) and male were 12.16℃ and 12.80℃, the effective cumulative temperature were 122.11 and 114.45 day-degree respectively. The (intrinsic) increase rate(r) was 0.2260,the finite increase rate(λ) was 1.2536/d, the net reproductive rate (R_(0))was 55.2284/(generation), the average generation time(T)= 17.7553 day at 25℃, the intrinsic increase rate increased with temperature increase , while the average generation period decreased with temperature increase.

Abstract:The relationships between air temperature and bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) by continuous ten years dates were studied. The results showed that month average temperatures of January, February and May and 2th bollworm appeared positive correlation, and negtive correlation of June and July. Correlation coefficiens between month average temperature of July and August together with 3th bollworm were -0.295 3 and 0.493 8 successively. The best temperature scope was 25.8~26.7℃for 3th bollworm. Correlation coefficiens of August and september were 0.375 9 and 0.479 8 in proper oder between month average temperatures and 4th bollworm. Correlation coefficiens of October to December were 0.353 3,-0.151 8 and -0.301 0 successively between month average temperatures and 2th bollworm of coming year. Correlation coefficiens appeared negative correlations between average temperature of the second ten days of June to July second ten days and 2th bollworm ten days by ten daysly. Abstract:The effect of temperature on the development and survival of the guava fruit fly, Bactrocera correcta (Bezzi) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from egg to adult's pre-ovipositional stage was studied in laboratory under 5 different constant temperatures: 18, 24, 30, 33 and 36 degrees C. The developmental time of the egg, larva and pupa significantly decreased with increasing temperature from 18 to 33 degrees C. The developmental rate of the pre-oviposition stage reached physiological maximum at the higher temperature (36 degrees C). At 18 degrees C, no female oviposited. The survival rate reached maximum at 24-33 degrees C and decreased at higher or lower temperature. The lower developmental thresholds, thermal constants and lethal high temperatures for different life stages of the fly were also estimated. The results will be useful for the predicting the fly's population dynamics and geographical distribution, which would help develop the fly management strategies.

Abstract:Effects of temperature on development, survival, and fecundity of boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, were assessed at 10, 11, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 45, and 46; 65% relative humidity; and a photoperiod of 13:11 (L: D) h. The mortality of boll weevil immature stages was 100% at 12 and decreased to 36.4% as the temperature increased to 25. When the temperature increased from 30 to 45, the mortality of weevils also increased from 50.1% to 100%. From 15 to 35, the boll weevil preimaginal development rate was linearly related to temperature. The average development time of total boll weevil immature lifestages decreased 3.6-fold and the preovipositional period de- creased 3.3-fold when the temperature was increased from 15 to 30. The lower threshold for development was estimated at 10.9, 6.6, 7.0, and 9.0 for eggs, larval, pupal, and total immature stages, respectively, with total thermal time requirement to complete immature stages of 281.8 DD (degree day) (15) and 247.8 DD (35). At 11 and 46, weevil females did not oviposit. Longevity of adult females decreased 4.6-fold with increasing temperatures from15 to 35. Fecundity increased with increasing tempera- tures up to 30 and significantly decreased thereafter. These findings will be useful in creating a temperature-based degree-day model for predicting the occurrence of key life stages in the field. An accurate predictor of a pest s development can be very important in determining sampling protocols, timing insecticide applications, or implementing an inte- grated pest management control strategy targeting susceptible life stages.
Influence of Temperature on Development,survival and Fecundity of Pollination Beetle:Haptoncus Luteolus (Erichson)

Abstract:Beetles are one of the oldest pollinators and many have evolved fixed pollination relationship with flowers.Nitidulids (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) were reported as pollinators long ago and are important pollinators of plants such as Annonaceae,Arecaceae,Dipterocarpaceae,Ebenaceae,Icacinaceae,Moraceae,Myristicaceae,Palmae, etc.Haptoncus luteolus (Erichson) can pollinate commercially grown sugar apples (Annona squamosa L.) and atemoyas (A.squamosa X A.cherimola P. Miller) in Florida. In domestic studies,nitidulids were recorded as pests in storages,cotton and rape.Luo Feng et al. have carried out research on the distribution and diffusion of H. luteolus in cotton field. They considered a valuable pollinator because it has a strong ability to diffuse and its range of host plants pollinated is very wide. Since this early research of nitidulids pollinators in China, there have been few reports about their biological and ecological traits. In this study we investigate the development,survival and fecundity of H.luteolus at different temperatures. H. luteolus used in our experiments were taken from the towel gourd field of Huazhong Agricultural University.They were housed and raised in the Institute of Insects Resources of Huazhong Agricultural University.We kept the adults at a constant temperature (27±2℃) and used the flowers of towel gourd to feed them.Every day we changed their foods,kept a tampon wet to maintain the humidity in the the bottles used to house the beetles, and collected eggs from petals. Five temperature were used in the experiments (15℃,20℃,25℃,30℃ and 35℃) one level of water-content in soil (15%) and illumination cycle of 12 hours light and 12 hours dark. The temperatures and illumination cycle were controlled by JKDP-2 type Eternal Temperature boxes.Intensity of illumination was equal to that found 15cm away from a 10W lightbulb in normal daylight. We took the soil from the field and removed stones and roots of grass. The soil was then dried in an oven and its weight stabilised. When the soil was cooled to room temperature,we added water to make the water-content of thesoil 15% (comparative water-content in soil). Under the conditions of each combination of temperatures,water-content in soil and illumination cycle,we got data from at least 10 replicates containing immature stages including of eggs,larvae and pupae which were kept in a culture dish (Φ×h=(6.5×1.5cm).)We repeated the same experiment three times. Every day we observed the beetles 3 times (08:00, 14:00 and (20:00).) Each time we not only made observations and recorded the developmental periods of instars at different ages but also paid attention to the developmental process and how well they grew. At the last observation (20:00) of each day,we measured the weight of each cultural dish and added water to maintain the water-content at 15% but only after taking the records. When dealing with the adults,we use the same temperatures and illumination cycle as in the immature stages. We placed one female and one male, eclosing in 12h, into a finger tube (1.5cm×6.0cm) and used a water-soaked tampon to maintain humidity instead of controlling water-content in soil. The coupled adults were fed petals of towel gourd covered in pollens. Petals were changed daily and the number of number of eggs laid by the female laid in 24h counted. Counting ended when the female died. We recorded the pre-oviposition duration,fecundity and longevity of females. If the male died first,we maintained our observation. If the female died first,we ceased our observation.Our results show that temperature has a significant effect to development,survival and fecundity of H. luteolus. The relationship between temperatures and rate of developmental immature stages (egg,larva and pupae) changes as a parabola model and the rate of developmental was highest at 30℃ are most rapid. Abstract:Cannibalism is a common phenomenon in insects including the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The purpose of the present study was to investigate how factors (food availability, temperature and larval development stage) affect cannibalistic tendency in H. armigera under laboratory conditions. The results showed that cannibalism frequency of third instars reared on artificial diets was remarkably lower than that without artificial diets. The mortality was 90.00, 41.67, 38.33, 28.33 and 35.00%, as the amount of 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 0.10g/larva of artificial diets at 56h of post-treatment, respectively. No significant difference in mortality was observed between treatment of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00g/larva of artificial diets. Cannibalistic behaviour was obviously observed when third instars in groups were housed at four different temperatures including 22, 25, 28 and 31 degrees C. The mortality of third instars enhanced greatly as the rearing temperature increased and the highest was 51.67%, which was found at 31 degrees C, 56h after treatment. Cannibalism became more frequent as the larvae developed from third instars to fourth and fifth instars, with mortality of 41.67, 60.00 and 73.33%, respectively. These results indicated that different factors, especially food availability, were very important for the control of larval cannibalism in H. armigera.
