Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:We present here a new programmable polymerization route for the synthesis of new conjugated polymers via one pot reaction route. The three component polycoupling reactions of terephthalaldehyde and dibenzylamine with 4,4'diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl, bis(4-ethynylphenyl)dimethylsilane, 1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene, N,N-bis(4ethynylphenyl)aniline, or 2,5-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,1-dimethyl-3,4-diphenylsilole are catalyzed by indium(III) chloride in oxylene at 140 C, affording soluble polymers with well-defined structures and high molecular weights (M up to 51 200) in high yields (up to 96.9%). Model reaction was carried out to elucidate the chemical structures of the polymers. The resulting polymers are processable and enjoy high thermal stability. The polymers carrying tetraphenylethene and silole units are weakly emissive in solutions but become strong emitters when aggregated in poor solvents or fabricated as thin films in the solid state, displaying a phenomenon of aggregation enhanced emission characteristic Thin films of the polymers show high refractive indices (n = 1.7529-1.6041) in a wide wavelength region of 400-1600 nm with low optical dispersions (D' down to 0.005). The polymers are readily metallified by complexation of their triple bonds with cobalt octacarbonyls. Pyrolysis of the resulting organometallic polymers at high temperature under inert atmosphere generates nanostructured ceramics with high magnetic susceptibility (M-s up to 80.7 emu/g) and near zero coercivity (H-c down to 0.19 kOe).

Abstract:We report a new synthetic strategy to derive functional poly(disubstituted acetylenes) (PDSAs) through "phenol-yne click reaction". The phenol-containing PDSA was prepared by the polymerization of the triisopropylsilane (TIPS)-protected 4-((4- fluorophenyl) ethynyl) phenol monomer and by a subsequent deprotection step. Then, different functional groups (e. g., ester and amide) were grafted onto the PDSA side chains via the highly efficient "phenol-yne click reaction". Thepost-polymerization modification was carried out under mild conditions (at 40 degrees C, in common solvent) under an air atmosphere for a short time (4 h).The structures of the products were well characterized by GPC, NMR, and FTIR techniques and satisfactory data were collected. The data indicated that the phenol groups on the precursor PDSA were highly active to react with activated acetylenic compounds bearing functional groups intolerable to direct polymerization. This is the first example of the preparation of phenol-containing PDSA and the use of it as a precursor to prepare functional PDSAs. Besides the activated ester, thiol-ene click reaction, Michael addition reaction and Cu(I) catalysed alkyne-azide click reaction, we added a new tool in the tool-box for the synthesis of functional polymers.

Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.

Abstract:Development of new methodology for the preparation of functional polymers with practical applications is a fundamental important research area in macromolecular science. In this paper, a new polymerization route for the synthesis of functional polymers is developed. The three-component polycoupling reactions of diynes [H C C-R-C C H, R = (C6H5)(2)C = C(C6H5)(2), (C6H5)(4)SiC4(C4H9)(2), (C6H5)(4)SiC4(C6H5)(2), C12H8(OCH2)(2), (CH2)(4)], primary amines, and aldehydes are catalyzed by copper(I) chloride in toluene at 100 degrees C for 2 h, affording soluble and regular poly(dipropargyl amine)s (PDAs) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 43 800) in high yields (up to 89%). The polymerization reaction is insensitive to moisture. All the PDAs are thermally stable and film forming. Their thin films show good optical transparency and high refractive indices (RI = 1.8322-1.74S8) with low optical dispersions (D down to 0.0117). The tetraphenylethene or sidle-containing PDAs exhibit a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission. The PDAs are photosensitive and cross-link upon UV irradiation, generating negative photoresist fluorescent patterns. The polymer aggregates can function as sensitive fluorescent chemosensors for detecting explosives, such as picric acid, 2,4-dinitrotoluene, and 4-nitrobenzoyl chloride, with large quenching constants of up to 2.7 X 10(5) L/mol.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed cascade reaction of β'-allenoate adducts with aryl/heteroaryl carboxamides through a vinylogous elimination/C-H functionalization/intramolecular allylation reaction sequence has been developed with high Z stereoselectivity. Various ring-fused dihydropyridinones bearing an α,β-unsaturated ester substituent are obtained. It is the first example of application of the allenoate adducts to C-H functionalization annulations as practical precursors of hard-to-get functionalized electron-deficient 1,3-butadienes. Using air as the terminal oxidant also shows a great advantage in environmental friendliness.

Abstract:A direct, efficient, and practical protocol to install a chiral oxazoline unit onto aryl/heteroaryl rings via palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization of 2-positions of oxazolines with a variety of halides using dppe as the ligand has been developed. Various chiral oxazoline ligands could be synthesized, even in a 10-g scale process. This protocol is a good supplement to traditional methods and for diverse synthesis of chiral oxazoline ligands.

Abstract:A novel palladium(0)-catalyzed dearomative cyclization reaction of bromophenols with (1,n)-diynes has been developed for building two new types of tricyclic architectures containing a quaternary carbon center. This method employs inexpensive bromophenols, and easily accessible tethered diynes. It exhibits a broad substrate scope and tolerates various functional groups. Preliminary results with commercially available chiral ligands indicate that enantioselective variants are feasible for both cyclization processes.

Abstract:Development of new methodologies for synthesizing polymers with novel structures and unique properties is a fundamentally important area in polymer science. Herein, a novel synthetic strategy to conjugated poly(p-arylene dihalodiene)s (PADs) with high regio- and stereoselectivity was developed. In the presence of PdBr2 and CuBr2, the polymerizations of terminal alkynes proceeded smoothly in air without heating to generate PADs in high yields (up to 95.3%) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 915 900). Low-cost inorganic CuBr2 played dual roles as cocatalyst and comonomer. The PADs possessed good solubility and film-forming ability. Their thin films exhibited high refractive indices (1.7149-1.7245) and would be fabricated into well-resolved fluorescent photopatterns by photolithography. Thanks to the vinyl bromine functionality, the PADs could undergo efficient postmodification to afford polymers with more sophisticated structures and applications.

Abstract:The development of new polymerization routes to afford N -heterocyclic polymers is of vital importance and highly desired for various practical applications. Herein, a facile and efficient polyannulation reaction of dual-activated alkyne and pyridines was developed to construct novel N -heterocyclic poly(quinolizine)s. This polymerization can proceed smoothly under catalyst-free conditions with 100% atom utilization to furnish poly(quinolizine)s with high molecular weights (up to 34,100) and well-defined structures in acceptable yields. The resulting polymers show good solubility, high thermal stability and strong red emission. Moreover, the prepared poly(quinolizine)s exhibit low cytotoxicity and can selectively label lysosomes in live cells. Considering the remarkable advantages of readily available raw materials, mild polymerization conditions, atom economy, and excellent product performance, this new and efficient polymerization tool will open up enormous opportunities for preparing functional N -heterocyclic polymers.

Abstract:The development of an efficient transition metal-free polymerization route has been an active research topic in polymer science owing to its low synthetic cost and decreased metal residue and hence elevated material performance in the products. In this work, we report a new such method for constructing conjugated polydiynes based on the organic reaction of 1-haloalkyne. In the presence of potassium iodide, the polymerizations of 1,2-bis[4-(iodoethynyl)phenyl]-1,2-diphenylethene (1), 1,4-bis(2-iodoethynyl)benzene (2) and 4,4'-bis(2-iodoethynyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (3) proceed smoothly in N, N-dimethylformamide at 120 degrees C under nitrogen, producing P1-3 consisting of alternate aromatic and 1,3-diyne moieties in moderate to satisfactory yields. While P1 possesses good solubility in common organic solvents, P2 and P3 are insoluble due to their rigid structures. All the polymers are thermally stable, losing 5% of their weight at a high temperature of up to 352 degrees C. A homogeneous film of P1 can be readily obtained by spin-coating its solution, which shows high and UV-tunable refractive index (n = 2.1125-1.7747) in a wide wavelength range (400-900 nm). A well-defined fluorescent photopattern can be generated by UV irradiation of the polymer film through a copper mask. This work thus opens a new avenue for constructing conjugated polymers with advanced functionalities.

Abstract:Here, we describe the unexpected discovery of a Cu-catalyzed condensation polymerization reaction of propargylic electrophiles (CPPE) that transforms simple C3 building blocks into polydiynes of C6 repeating units. This reaction was achieved by a simple system composed of a copper acetylide initiator and an electron-rich phosphine ligand. Alkyne polymers (up to 33.8 kg/mol) were produced in good yields and exclusive regioselectivity with high functional group compatibility. Hydrogenation of the product afforded a new polyolefin-type backbone, while base-mediated isomerization led to a new type of dienyne-based electron-deficient conjugated polymer. Mechanistic studies revealed a new α-α selective Cu-catalyzed dimerization pathway of the C3 unit, followed by <i>in situ</i> organocopper-mediated chain-growth propagation. These insights not only provide an important understanding of the Cu-catalyzed CPPE of C3, C4, and C6 monomers in general but also lead to a significantly improved synthesis of polydiynes from simpler starting materials with handles for the incorporation of an α-end functional group.

Abstract:A novel polymerization route for the synthesis of multi-substituted poly(isoquinoline)s is introduced. The polyannulations of internal diynes and O-acyloxime derivatives are catalyzed by [Cp*RhCl2](2) with Cu(OAc)(2)center dot H2O as the oxidant in a methanol/THF mixture at 105 degrees C for 12 h, generating poly(isoquinoline) s containing fused heterocyclic rings with high molecular weights (up to 18 340) in almost quantitative yields. This polymerization is tolerant to stoichiometric imbalance and various functional groups, and is environmentally friendly with acetic acid as the only by-product. Most of the polymers are soluble and transparent in the visible light region (400-800 nm). Their thin films exhibit high refractive indices (RI = 1.832-1.571) in a wide wavelength region of 400-1000 nm. The poly(isoquinoline) carrying tetraphenyl-ethene units is highly emissive in the aggregated state, and can generate discernible photopatterns upon UV irradiation. It can also function as a sensitive fluorescent chemosensor for detecting nitro-aromatic explosives such as picric acid in a superamplification manner.

Abstract:A new route for atom-economical synthesis of functional polymers was developed. Oxidative polycoupling of 3,5-dimethyl-1-phenylpyrazole with 4,4’-(α,ω-alkylenedioxy) bis(diphenylacetylene)s and 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]ethene, respectively, were catalyzed by [Cp*RhCl2]2, 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylcyclopenta-1,3-diene and copper(II) acetate in dimethylformamide under stoichiometric imbalance conditions, affording soluble poly(pyrazolylnaphthalene)s in satisfactory yields (isolation yield up to 82%) with high molecular weights (Mw up to 35700). All the polymers were thermally stable, losing little of their weight at high temperatures of 323–422 oC. They possessed good film-forming property and their thin solid films showed high refractive indices (RI = 1.747–1.593) in a wide wavelength region of 400−1000 nm. The polymer carrying tetraphenylethene unit displayed a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission and showed enhanced light emission in the aggregated state.
