Abstract:Goos-Hanchen effect is experimentally studied when the Bloch surface wave is excited in the forbidden band of a one-dimensional photonic band-gap structure. By tuning the refractive index of the cladding covering the truncated photonic crystal structure, either a guided or a surface mode can be excited. In the latter case, strong enhancement of the Goos-Hanchen shift induced by the Bloch-surface-wave results in sub-millimeter shifts of the reflected beam position. Such giant Goos-Hanchen shift, ~750 times of the wavelength, could enable many intriguing applications that had been less than feasible to implement before.

Abstract:The Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift is simulated and experimentally studied when the Bloch surface wave is excited in the forbidden band of a one-dimensional photonic band-gap structure for an excitation beam with different divergence. By changing the beam waist radius, a correspondingly changed Goos–Hänchen shift curve can be observed, where with a larger waist radius and the corresponding less divergence of the excitation beam, a greater GH shift that is closer to the Artmann estimation is obtained. The experimental demonstration of this phenomenon agrees well with the theoretical simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, the Goos-Hanchen shift on the interface of uniaxially anisotropic left-handed materials is investigated exhaustively, and the analytical expressions of Goos-Hanchen shift is presented for the cases of the optical axis being perpendicular and parallel to the interface, respectively. Moreover, the conditions for the existence and the sign of Goos-Hanchen shift are determined. Under Fresnel approximation, the expression of Goos-Hanchen shift around the critical angle is obtained, and the result shows that the shift around the critical angle is a function of the beam waist and incident angle. A simple approximate expression of the lateral shift with incident angle equals the critical angle is also presented. Thu, the general expression of Goos-Hanchen shift for any incident angles is obtained.

Abstract:The enhancement of Goos-Hänchen shift of graphene coated on a truncated one-dimensional photonic crystal is proposed and theoretically investigated. The proposed band-gap configuration featuring highly electric field enhancement and confinement on the graphene surface enables the excitation of Bloch surface wave mode. By taking full advantages of the remarkable optical properties of the excited optical surface wave mode, a large phase variation appears near the band-gap of the proposed structure, leading to a dramatically enhanced Goos-Hänchen shift. Leveraging this giant Goos-Hänchen shift, the sensing capability of this proposed structure is discussed, implicating a superior performance in Goos-Hänchen shift sensing applications.

Abstract:Giant Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts are experimentally demonstrated from a prism-coupled multilayer structure incorporating a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) through a bandgap-enhanced total internal reflection scheme. By combining the large phase changes near the bandgap of the PC and the low reflection loss of the total internal reflection, 2 orders of magnitude enhancement of the GH shift is realized with rather low extra optical loss, which might help to open the door toward many interesting applications for GH effects.

Abstract:In this paper, the Goos-Hänchen shift on the interface between one regular isotropic medium and another anistotropic LHM is analyzed extensively. The analytical expression of Goos-Hänchen shift on the uniaxially anisotropic LHM is derived for the configuration where the optical axis of the LHM is perpendicular and parallel to the interface of two media, respectively. Meanwhile, the expression of Goos-Hänchen shift on the surface of biaxially anisotropic LHM is also presented. The result shows that the Goos-Hänchen shift on the surface of the anisotropic LHM is significantly different from that of isotropic LHM. And under certain conditions, anomalous Goos-Hänchen shift shall occur, i.e., the Goos-Hänchen shift is negative on the surface of the anisotropic LHM. The constraints for the existence of anomalous Goos-Hänchen shift in anisotropic LHMs are identified, respectively.

Abstract:Despite the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts have recently been discussed in metallic multilayer or dielectric grating structure with monolayer graphene, its investigation on their combined structure is quite limited. In this work, we theoretically propose a new hybrid structure consisting of single layer graphene (SLG), a dielectric grating, a metal film, and one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) and reveal this structure can achieve the GH shift as high as 7430 times of the incident wavelength, which is induced by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the metal layer and the waveguide mode in the 1DPC. Additionally, we find that the positive or negative sign of the GH shift in this structure can be engineering by Fermi energy of SLG, which is unattainable in monolayer graphene based dielectric grating structure. Our results offer the new platform for enhancing and controlling GH shifts.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate the existence of large transmitted optical positive and negative Goos–Hänchen shifts in photonic crystal slabs numerically and experimentally. The Goos–Hänchen shift we observed directly reaches ∼20 μm, which is 30 times the wavelength, approaching the radius of the beam waist. To explain this phenomenon, we measure the transmission phase through the phase measurement system and find there is an acute phase change near the resonance in photonic crystal slabs, which enhances the Goos–Hänchen shift. Our experimental results are consistent with simulation, and the work can be used to modulate the propagation of light in further research.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the electrically and magnetically tunable Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift of a reflected light beam at terahertz frequencies. Our study focuses on a photonic crystal heterostructure incorporating a monolayer anisotropic graphene. We observe a tunable and enhanced GH shift facilitated by a drastic change in the reflected phase at the resonance angle owing to the excitation of the topological edge state. Considering the quantum response of graphene, we demonstrate the ability to switch positive and negative GH shifts through the manipulation of graphene's conductivity properties. Moreover, we show that the GH shift can be actively tuned by the external electric field and magnetic field, as well as by controlling the structural parameters of the system. We believe that this tunable and enhanced GH shift scheme offers excellent potential for preparing terahertz shift devices.

Abstract:A novel and simple sensing scheme based on the giant Goos-Hanchen shift enhanced by the excitation of the Bloch surface wave in a truncated one-dimensional photonic crystal structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The significantly enhanced Goos-Hanchen shift is directly measured by a position sensitive detector and the following amplifier. The bulk refractive index sensitivity of the sensor is investigated by utilizing sodium chloride solutions and glycerol solutions with different concentrations as test samples. The results show that the Goos-Hanchen shift sensor has a superior sensitivity of 2.0*10(-9) RIU/nm, which outperforms the SPR enhanced Goos-Hanchen shift sensors. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:We have presented adjustable enhanced Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift in a magneto-optical photonic crystal (MOPC) waveguide. The waveguide consists of a top layer of ferrite rods and a lower MOPC with opposite biased dc external magnetic fields (EMFs), and it supports both odd-like and even-like modes simultaneously. The simulation results show the odd-like mode can cause an enhanced negative GH shift, while the even-like mode can result in an enhanced positive GH shift. The physical reason for such negative and positive GH shifts is attributed to the efficient mode coupling and propagation behaviors of the electromagnetic (EM) wave in the waveguide. Furthermore, we have realized the switchable negative/positive GH shift by altering the direction combination of the EMFs. In addition, the magnitudes of both GH shifts can be adjusted by changing the strength of EMF or the width of the waveguide. These results provide new ways to control the transmission behaviors of EM wave and hold promise in applications such as detections, optical switches, and sensors.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of surface plasmon (SP) resonance on Goos–Hanchen (GH) spatial and angular shifts in the reflection of a light beam by considering an attenuated total reflection structure containing a graphene layer. In particular, we find giant spatial and angular GH shifts for the p-wave light close to the plasmon resonance. The GH shifts can be controlled by adjusting the voltage applied to graphene via external gate. The giant and tunable GH shifts provide an alternative SP sensing scheme, which improves the sensitivity of SP sensors significantly.

Abstract:We proposed an effective and flexible scheme to achieve tunable giant Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift of reflected light in the configuration of guided-wave surface plasmon resonance with Rydberg atoms. With the super atom model of Rydberg atom due to the dipole blocking effect, we investigated the influence of Rydberg state population on GH displacement. By adjusting the external driving field on Rydberg atoms without changing the structure geometry, not only can GH shift be enhanced significantly to the magnitude of millimeter, but also the transition between positive and negative GH shift can be controlled at the same resonant angles. Furthermore, the resonant angle position of the maximum GH shift is also tunable via detuning the field. Our scheme may offer promising prospects for the optical switches and nano-sensors with high precision.

Abstract:The Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts of light beams reflected from conventional passive optical systems could be enhanced using the Brewster angle effect or resonance effect, but the maximum GH shift is located at the reflectance minima, which is difficult for experimental detection. In this paper, we present an efficient and flexible scheme to realize complex parity-time (PT)-symmetric periodic optical potentials (complex crystals) in helium atomic vapor. The GH shifts of probe light reflected from the complex crystal are theoretically investigated and large GH shifts could be obtained inside the high-reflection band. When the complex crystal is operated near the coherent perfect absorption-laser point, the maximum GH shift of probe light is exactly located at the reflectance peak. Moreover, the GH shifts could be easily controlled by adjusting the intensity of control light.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a topological edge state can enhance the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift on the interface of a magnetic photonic crystal (MPC) fabricated by ferrite rings in a square lattice. The GH shift is nonreciprocal because of the time reversal symmetry breaking, and the shift is negative, which is associated with the incident angles and direction of bias DC magnetic field. In particular, the nonreciprocal GH shift presents at normal incidence, and is further verified by experiments. The nonreciprocal negative GH shifts provide a new way to control the flow of light, which could be applied to sensing and even the slow light waveguide to trap the light.
Theoretical Enhancement of the Goos-Hänchen Shift with a Metasurface Based on Bound States in the Continuum

Abstract:The enhancement of the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift has become a research hotspot due to its promoted application of the GH effect in various fields. However, currently, the maximum GH shift is located at the reflectance dip, making it difficult to detect GH shift signals in practical applications. This paper proposes a new metasurface to achieve reflection-type bound states in the continuum (BIC). The GH shift can be significantly enhanced by the quasi-BIC with a high quality factor. The maximum GH shift can reach more than 400 times the resonant wavelength, and the maximum GH shift is located exactly at the reflection peak with unity reflectance, which can be applied to detect the GH shift signal. Finally, the metasurface is used to detect the variation in the refractive index, and the sensitivity can reach 3.58 × 106 μm/RIU (refractive index unit) according to the simulation's calculations. The findings provide a theoretical basis to prepare a metasurface with high refractive index sensitivity, a large GH shift, and high reflection.
