Abstract:In article number 2001050, Houzhao Wan, Ling Miao, Yi Wang, Hao Wang and co-workers present the valence engineering of manganese oxide through bulk oxygen defects. The resulting material can act as a cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Valence engineering can change the [MnO6] octahedral configuration of manganese oxide to improve structural stability and inhibit the dissolution of Mn2+, thereby greatly improving the cycle life of the battery.

Abstract:Application of zinc metal in the field of electrochemistry has always been of specific interest as it is a favored material for high energy density batteries and sacrificial electrodes to guard the other metallic components against corrosion. Some other factors, beside a high energy density, such as its low cost, ease of handling, nontoxicity, and abundance of zinc, has made this metal receive a considerable attention by researchers. In the past decades, considerable efforts have been dedicated to discovering and emerging electrically rechargeable zinc-based batteries in a response to the growing request in energy consumption in the fast-growing market of electronic devices and automotive business. Nevertheless, regardless of the developments made in the material science and the cell design, only a slight breakthrough has been attained in developing a system capable of substituting other viable rechargeable batteries. Passivation is one of the most challenging obstacles in zinc air batteries (ZABs) for commercialization. Recently, several developments have been executed to alleviate the passivation of zinc anode in the ZABs. This review has meticulously surveyed different aspects of this issue as well as recent developments for mitigating the zinc anode corrosion and passivation.

Abstract:The century-old zinc-air (Zn-air) battery concept has been revived in the last decade due to its high theoretical energy density, environmental-friendliness, affordability, and safety. Particularly, electrically rechargeable Zn-air battery technologies are of great importance for bulk applications like electric vehicles, grid management, and portable electronic devices. Nevertheless, Zn-air batteries are still not competitive enough to realize widespread practical adoption because of issues in efficiency, durability, and cycle life. Here, following an introduction to the fundamentals and performance testing techniques, the latest research progress related to electrically rechargeable Zn-air batteries is compiled, particularly new key findings in the last five years (2013-2018). The strategies concerning the development of Zn and air electrodes are in focus. The design of other battery components, namely electrolytes and separators are also discussed. Poor performance of O2 electrocatalysts and the lack of the long-term stability of Zn electrodes and electrolytes remain major challenges. Finally, recommendations regarding the testing routines and materials design are provided. It is hoped that this up-to-date account will help to shape the future research activities toward the development of practical electrically rechargeable Zn-air batteries with extended lifetime and superior performance.

Abstract:Zinc-air batteries will be a promising candidate for storage energy and power supply due to their high specific energy, environmental compatibility, and economic availability. However, the problem of cycle life of rechargeable zinc-air battery remains unresolved mainly because of dendrite growth of electrodeposited zinc and performance degradation of air electrode. Here we show that rechargeable zinc-air battery with an optimized structure can stably run at large current densities, where air electrode is connected to the charging electrode through a stainless steel frame, and the effective area of charging electrode is larger than that of zinc electrode by way of a trapezoidal structure. This battery structure can control morphological change of zinc electrode and monitor dendrite growth without increasing the battery volume. The results demonstrate that the charge-discharge efficiency of rechargeable zinc-air battery can be improved by nickel foam as gas diffusion layer of air electrode, calcium oxide additive to the electrolyte, or a permanent magnet in parallel with the electrode. The lifetime of rechargeable zinc-air battery can be extended by electrolyte flow or battery structure optimization. These findings will be available for other metal-air batteries and electrolytic metal industry.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc–air batteries are of great significance among metal‐air battery chemistries. However, their commercialization still has a long way to go due to unresolved shortcomings such as zinc dendrites, non‐portability, low cycle performance, and so on. Advanced and practical strategies to tackle these challenges are systematically summarized from multiple angles: rechargeability, air cathodes, zinc anodes, electrolytes, and battery configurations, aiming to provide some value guidance for the rapid development of zinc–air batteries. Rechargeable zinc–air batteries (Re‐ZABs) are one of the most promising next‐generation batteries that can hold more energy while being cost‐effective and safer than existing devices. Nevertheless, zinc dendrites, non‐portability, and limited charge–discharge cycles have long been obstacles to the commercialization of Re‐ZABs. Over the past 30 years, milestone breakthroughs have been made in technical indicators (safety, high energy density, and long battery life), battery components (air cathode, zinc anode, and gas diffusion layer), and battery configurations (flexibility and portability), however, a comprehensive review on advanced design strategies for Re‐ZABs system from multiple angles is still lacking. This review underscores the progress and strategies proposed so far to pursuit the high‐efficiency Re‐ZABs system, including the aspects of rechargeability (from primary to rechargeable), air cathode (from unifunctional to bifunctional), zinc anode (from dendritic to stable), electrolytes (from aqueous to non‐aqueous), battery configurations (from non‐portable to portable), and industrialization progress (from laboratorial to practical). Critical appraisals of the advanced modification approaches (such as surface/interface modulation, nanoconfinement catalysis, defect electrochemistry, synergistic electrocatalysis, etc.) are highlighted for cost‐effective flexible Re‐ZABs with good sustainability and high energy density. Finally, insights are further rendered properly for the future research directions of advanced zinc–air batteries.

Abstract:With the advantages of high energy density,safe and reliable aqueous electrolyte and low cost,zinc-air batteries show important potential as well as challenge for electrical energy conversion and storage. These batteries used in pure electric vehicles,mobile tools and electricity storage for new energy power generations,have promising market and applications. However,some issues related to electrode structure and electrocatalyst in cathode and zinc dendrite growth in anode restrict its further development and application. This paper analyzes the critical scientific issues in zinc air batteries, especially for the electrocatalyst of air electrode,electrode configuration,dendritic growth in zinc negative electrode,discusses the battery performance in details,and points out the main barriers in developing advanced battery technology. In summary the development of novel electrocatalyst,air electrode,manufacturing technology for long-term cycle life and low cost zinc air batteries are urgent problems to be settled at present.

Abstract:This investigation enhances zinc‐air batteries (ZABs) through nano‐engineering, boosting energy storage, conversion efficiency, and stability. It delves into the strategic design of nanostructures and precise operational tuning, essential for optimizing ZAB performance. The study projects a future where nanotechnology fundamentally transforms energy solutions, with significant implications for sustainable energy development. This review focuses on the advanced design and optimization of nanostructured zinc–air batteries (ZABs), with the aim of boosting their energy storage and conversion capabilities. The findings show that ZABs favor porous nanostructures owing to their large surface area, and this enhances the battery capacity, catalytic activity, and life cycle. In addition, the nanomaterials improve the electrical conductivity, ion transport, and overall battery stability, which crucially reduces dendrite growth on the zinc anodes and improves cycle life and energy efficiency. To obtain a superior performance, the importance of controlling the operational conditions and using custom nanostructural designs, optimal electrode materials, and carefully adjusted electrolytes is highlighted. In conclusion, porous nanostructures and nanoscale materials significantly boost the energy density, longevity, and efficiency of Zn–air batteries. It is suggested that future research should focus on the fundamental design principles of these materials to further enhance the battery performance and drive sustainable energy solutions.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-based batteries have come to the forefront of energy storage field with a surprising pace during last decade due to the advantageous safety, abundance and relatively low cost, making them important supplements of lithium-ion batteries. As a significant role in zinc-based batteries, zinc-silver battery owns the advantages of high specific energy density, stable working voltage, high charging efficiency, safety and environmental friendliness, and it has been widely used in military such as in aerospace, deep water manned and civil field such as energy supply for watch and hearing aid. However, it is still suffering from a few drawbacks such as unsatisfactory cycle life, low utilization of the cathode. This review introduces the basic principles of zinc-silver batteries and elaborates the battery configurations aiming to understand its working mechanisms as well as the related issues. Most importantly, the very recent research updates and the concerns have arisen in the development are summarized from conventional cell to flexible device and hybrid device. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of zinc-silver batteries are further prospected to give a broad idea to readers new in the area and trigger inspirations for motivated researchers to further widen the utilization of silver-zinc batteries.

Study on failure mechanism on rechargeable alkaline zinc–Air battery during charge/discharge cycles at different depths of discharge

Abstract:Background: Zinc-air battery (ZAB) is a promising candidate for energy storage, but the short cycle life severely restricts the wider practical applications. Up to date, no consensus on the dominant factors affecting ZABs cycle life was reached to help understanding how to prolong the ZAB's cycle life. Here, a series of replacement experiments based on the ZAB were conducted to confirm the pivotal factors that influence the cycle life at different depths of discharge (DOD). Method: The morphology and composition of the components of the battery were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical titration analyses. Result: SEM images and XRD results revealed that the failure of the zinc anode gradually deepens with the increase of DOD, while the performance degradation of the tricobalt tetroxide/Carbon Black (Co 3 O 4 /CB) air cathode depends on the operating time. The concentration of CO 3 2− depends on the charge/discharge cycle time. The replacement experiments results show that the dominant factors affecting the ZAB's cycle life is the reduction of active sites on the surface of Co 3 O 4 /CB air cathode at a shallow DOD, while that is the carbonation of the electrolyte at a deep DOD. The reduction of active sites on the surface of Co 3 O 4 /CB air cathode is caused by the coverage of K 2 CO 3 precipitated by carbonation of the electrolyte, suggesting that the carbonation of the alkaline electrolyte limits ZAB's cycle life. Conclusion: Therefore, this work not only further discloses the failure mechanism of ZAB, but also provides some feasible guidance to design a ZAB with along cycle life.

A Horizontal Three-Electrode Structure for Zinc-Air Batteries with Long-Term Cycle Life and High Performance

Abstract:Limited cycle life is a main reason preventing the large-scale application of electrically rechargeable zinc-air batteries. With the aim of increasing cycle life, a novel three-electrode zinc-air battery in a sandwich arrangement was designed and fabricated. The cycle life was evaluated by charge-discharge cycling tests with 100 cycles at high operational current density (40 mA cm(-2) and 80 mA cm(-2) for charging and discharging, respectively) for performance testing. A maximum power density of 105 mW cm(-2) was achieved at current density of 150 mA cm(-2). The average columbic efficiency, depth of discharge and energy efficiency were 90%, 73% and 42%, respectively. A longer cycling test for 1000 cycles approximately 1917h cycling duration at a current density of 20 mA cm(-2) was also achieved and voltage decay for charging and discharging was 13% and 12%, respectively. The results demonstrate that a horizontal tri-electrode structure for zinc-air batteries is advantageous for achieving increased cycle life while exhibiting high power density, high depth of discharge and excellent charge-discharge cycling performance, which provide promising applications of zinc-air batteries for electric vehicle and grid-scale energy storage.

Abstract:Sustainable zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are considered promising energy storage devices owing to their inherent safety, high energy density, wide operating temperature window, environmental friendliness, etc. , showing great prospect for future large-scale applications. Thus, tremendous efforts have been devoted to addressing the critical challenges associated with sustainable ZABs, aiming to significantly improve their energy efficiency and prolong their operation lifespan. The growing interest in sustainable ZABs requires in-depth research on oxygen electrocatalysts, electrolytes, and Zn anodes, which have not been systematically reviewed to date. In this review, the fundamentals of ZABs, oxygen electrocatalysts for air cathodes, physicochemical properties of ZAB electrolytes, and issues and strategies for the stabilization of Zn anodes are systematically summarized from the perspective of fundamental characteristics and design principles. Meanwhile, significant advances in the in situ / operando characterization of ZABs are highlighted to provide insights into the reaction mechanism and dynamic evolution of the electrolyte|electrode interface. Finally, several critical thoughts and perspectives are provided regarding the challenges and opportunities for sustainable ZABs. Therefore, this review provides a thorough understanding of the advanced sustainable ZAB chemistry, hoping that this timely and comprehensive review can shed light on the upcoming research horizons of this prosperous area.

Enhancing the Cycle Life of a Zinc–Air Battery by Means of Electrolyte Additives and Zinc Surface Protection

Abstract:The commercialization of rechargeable alkaline zinc–air batteries (ZAB) requires advanced approaches to improve secondary zinc anode performance, which is hindered by the high corrosion and dissolution rate of zinc in this medium. Modified (with additives) alkaline electrolyte has been one of the most investigated options to reduce the high solubility of zinc. However, this strategy alone has not been fully successful in enhancing the cycle life of the battery. The combination of mitigation strategies into one joint approach, by using additives (ZnO, KF, K2CO3) in the base alkaline electrolyte and simultaneously preparing zinc electrodes that are based on ionomer (Nafion®)-coated zinc particles, was implemented and evaluated. The joint use of electrolyte additives and ionomer coating was intended to regulate the exposition of Zn, deal with zincate solubility, minimize the shape change and dendrite formation, as well as reduce the hydrogen evolution rate. This strategy provided a beneficial joint protective efficiency of 87% thanks to decreasing the corrosion rate from 10.4 (blank) to 1.3 mgZn cm−1·s−1 for coated Zn in the modified electrolyte. Although the rate capability and capacity are limited, the ionomer-coated Zn particles extended the ZAB cycle life by about 50%, providing battery roundtrip efficiency above 55% after 270 h operation.

Abstract:Abstract Zinc–air batteries have been laying in the laboratory for decades of years, enjoying the low‐current density galvanostatic cycling test at comfortable room temperatures, almost forgetting their identity as the practical batteries. The best way to revive and reinvigorate zinc–air batteries is through career planning, particularly by analyzing their advantages and disadvantages and identifying their potential applications. This will help to chart a course for the future. Building on its unique advantages of utilizing aqueous electrolyte, being low‐cost, and having high environmental adaptability, we have proposed a clear career plan with a focus on wearable devices, extreme temperatures, and marine applications. In this review, we discuss the inherent advantages, current advances, and future direction, intending to remind the battery that the Zn–air battery is intended for practical use to fulfill diverse scenarios.

Abstract:Flexible zinc‐air batteries (FZABs) have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium‐ion batteries in flexible electronic devices due to the advantages of excellent mechanical properties, high energy density, and notable safety. However, the unclear causes of performance degradation and failure mechanisms of FZABs significantly impede their commercialization. Therefore, extensive research is needed to fully reveal the factors and mechanisms responsible for the performance decline of FZABs. In this review, the failure mechanisms of FZABs' key components, including the Zn anode, solid electrolyte, catalyst air cathode, and electrolyte/electrode interface are analyzed and discussed. To promote further research and development of FZABs, a series of challenges and corresponding strategies are summarized and analyzed. Finally, the future development of FZABs is envisioned. This paper aims to comprehensively elucidate the failure mechanisms of FZABs, guide the development of high‐performance FZABs, and thus promote their commercialization.

Abstract:Alkaline zinc–air batteries are promising energy storage technologies with the advantages of low cost, ecological friendliness, and high energy density. However, the rechargeable zinc–air battery has not been used on a commercial scale because the zinc electrode suffers from critical problems such as passivation, dendrite growth, and hydrogen evolution reaction, which limit the practical applications of zinc–air batteries. Herein, the Perspective summaries the solutions to minimize the negative effects of zinc electrodes on discharge performance, cycling life, and shelf life. The future direction of academic research based on current studies of the existing challenges is proposed.

Abstract:As a promising energy storage device, the rechargeable zinc-air battery (RZAB) has attracted increasing attention because of its high energy density, cost-effectiveness, and high safety, and the rich abundance of zinc, as well as its environmental benignity. However, the widespread application of RZABs still faces considerable challenges derived from zinc-electrodes, electrolytes, and air-electrodes. In this paper, specific attention is given to RZAB zinc-electrode materials and fabrication with focus on the fundamental understanding of zinc-electrode reaction mechanisms, technical challenges, mitigation strategies, and perspectives. Particularly, the approaches to overcome the challenges are also presented and analyzed for facilitating further research and development of RZABs.

Abstract:In recent years, rechargeable Zn-air batteries put forward higher requirements on oxygen electrode materials in terms of their bifunctional properties, stability, and economic cost. As an eligible candidate, defective carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention since substantial progresses in oxygen evolution reaction and/or oxygen reduction reaction have been reported sequentially. This review briefly summarizes the recent advancements towards defective carbon-based oxygen electrode materials, mainly focusing on the structure-designing strategies and characterization techniques of active centers, as well as the understanding of structure-property relationships by the combination of experimental result and theoretical calculation for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Besides, the current challenges and opportunities in high-performance carbon electrodes are discussed with an emphasis on future probable solutions.

Zinc-ion (Zn-ion) batteries are a heavier, but safer, cheaper, and environmentally friendly form of this battery technology that has uses when portability is not the primary objective. One such use case is large format energy storage for intermittent renewable energy such as solar and wind fields for when the sun is no longer shining, or the wind blowing. One of the disadvantages of Zn-ion batteries is that the current battery life needs to be increased to stand a chance against Li-ion batteries in terms of consumer demands. This paper describes the effect of electrode structures and charging/discharging rates on battery cycle life in coin cells. The symmetric cell study shows that higher charging/discharging rates decrease the battery's cycle life, and the polymer-coated Zn anodes improve the battery's cycle life. It is also noted that maintaining good contact with all the major components in batteries is crucial for batteries to work properly. The battery-making process carried out in the lab and the important details of battery manufacturing are described in this manuscript.
