Abstract:Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to vertices and vertex normals of triangle meshes is developed. Piecewise parametric surfaces that have C0 continuity across boundary curves of adjacent patches and G1 continuity at the joint vertices are obtained by the interpolation scheme. A closed form expression of Taubin integral–a 3×3 symmetric matrix in integral formulation–is derived based on the piecewise parametric surfaces. Principal curvatures and principal directions are then computed from the Taubin integral. The proposed method does not need to parameterize data points or solve a linear system which is usually required by other surface fitting methods. Compared to several state-of-the-art curvature estimation methods, the proposed method can generate more accurate results for general surface meshes. The experiments have demonstrated its accuracy, robustness and effectiveness.

Abstract:This paper proposes to generalize linear subdivision schemes to nonlinear subdivision schemes for curve and surface modeling by refining vertex positions together with refinement of unit control normals at the vertices. For each round of subdivision, new control normals are obtained by projections of linearly subdivided normals onto unit circle or sphere while new vertex positions are obtained by updating linearly subdivided vertices along the directions of the newly subdivided normals. Particularly, the new position of each linearly subdivided vertex is computed by weighted average of end points of circular or helical arcs that interpolate the positions and normals at the old vertices at one ends and the newly subdivided normal at the other ends. The main features of the proposed subdivision schemes are three folds: (1) The point-normal (PN) subdivision schemes can reproduce circles, circular cylinders and spheres using control points and control normals; (2) PN subdivision schemes generalized from convergent linear subdivision schemes converge and can have the same smoothness orders as the linear schemes; (3) PN C2 subdivision schemes generalizing linear subdivision schemes that generate C2 subdivision surfaces with flat extraordinary points can generate visually C2 subdivision surfaces with non-flat extraordinary points. Experimental examples have been given to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques for curve and surface modeling.

Abstract:Interpolation of data points is a fundamental problem in the field of CAD/CAM, geometric modeling and computer graphics and so on [1, 11-19]. Sampled or given data points are usually interpolated by using B-splines in many applications [1, 2, 3, 11-16, 19]. However, we also need to interpolate a set of infinitive data points, for instance, pieces of surfaces, textures, tiling and continuous functions defined on a subset of Euclidean space. Here we interpolate some surfaces as a whole instead of some sampled data points. The problem of finding fillet surfaces for a set of given surfaces can be considered as an example. We aim to construct a smooth surface in the whole domain, which interpolates these given surfaces defined on some sub-domains. In fact, some special cases have already been studied with different methods and view points. Given four boundary curves and corresponding derivatives along the input curves, the Coons patches are bicubically blended with the given curve data which consists of infinite data points [1, 5]. The CBarnhill, Birkhoff and Gordon approach for triangular Coons patches can be explained as follows. Suppose we are given three boundary curves. We seek a surface that interpolates to all three of them, namely, a transfinite triangular interpolant [1, 6]. More Coons type interpolants are proposed over triangles, and a general interpolant called N-sided surface patches is proposed by J. Gregory [7]. Abstract:A new stationary subdivision scheme is presented for quadrilateral meshes. In contrast to the usual dyadic splitting operation, the number of quadrilaterals increases in every step by a factor of 2. Applying the subdivision twice is equivalent to a dyadic subdivision and a rotation. The presented algorithm is derived from tensor product of cubic B-splines, so the resulting surface is C2 continuous for regular vertices (with valence 4) and C1 continuous for extraordinary vertices (with valence other than 4). The simplicity in geometric operation and the slow topological refinement make the subdivision scheme more suitable for many applications, such as 3D image reconstruction and network transmission.

Abstract:In practical applications, we usually use surfaces of lower degree and less number of patches to interpolate irregular data points so that operations applied on these surfaces can run efficiently and robustly. In this paper, we propose a recursive and adaptive method to construct a (first order geometric continuity) cubic triangular Bernstein-Bezier surface over an arbitrary triangulation derived from a given set of irregular data points. For a surface triangulation of n sample points in 3D spaces, a monotonic sequence of triangulations is constructed by removing a boundary vertex P and all triangles sharing with P at each step, where is composed of a single triangle. Semi-Stationary Push-Back Subdivision Schemes

Abstract:To overcome the shortages of classic subdivision schemes, a kind of novel semi-stationary push subdivision schemes are proposed. Combined with the advantage of unified subdivision framework, semi-stationary control and push-back operator, the schemes in curve and surface case are given based on subdivision operator. And several limit properties are also discussed. These methods can generate a series of blending shapes between approximation and interpolation of the initial control mesh. In surface case, direction tags are introduced to solve the fairness problem. The extensible schemes based on symbol representation are much useful in computer animation and industrial prototype design application.

Abstract:This paper extends the modified affine arithmetic in matrix form method for bivariate polynomial evaluation and algebraic curve plotting in 2D to modified affine arithmetic in tensor form for trivariate polynomial evaluation and algebraic surface plotting in 3D. Experimental comparison shows that modified affine arithmetic in tensor form is not only more accurate but also much faster than standard affine arithmetic when evaluating trivariate polynomials.

Abstract:Since subdivision schemes can generate curves and surfaces rapidly, they are widely used in the curve and surface modeling. Such topic is one of the important research fields in computer aided geometric design. The convexity preserving properties of the interpolating four-point ternary subdivision scheme are discussed in this paper. The conditions on the parameter of the scheme to preserve convexity are given. The parameter locates in the interval (115,19), thus the limit curve generated by the scheme is C^2.

Abstract:This paper presents a geometric algorithm for the generation of uniform cubic B-spline curves interpolating a sequence of data points under tangent and curvature vectors constraints. To satisfy these constraints, knot insertion is used to generate additional control points which are progressively repositioned using corresponding geometric rules. Compared to existing schemes, our approach is capable of handling plane as well as space curves, has local control, and avoids the solution of the typical linear system. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated through several comparative examples. Applications of the method in NC machining and shape design are also outlined.

Abstract:Background: Curved modeling technology originated from the geometric lofting and design of aircrafts, automobiles and ships. The control points of the traditional B-spline mesh should be placed regularly in whole rows and columns. A T-spline surface is a B-spline surface that allows T-junctions. It can overcome the limitations of traditional B-mesh topology and has its own advantages in surface splicing, surface fining, surface simplification, etc. T-spline has wide application prospects in product modeling, art design, animation production, numerical control machining, volume data expression, and other aspects. Objective: The objective of this paper is to summarize the properties, algorithms, and applications of T-splines. It helps scholars in determining the research status of T-splines and in further exploring the theories related to the applications of T-splines. Methods: This paper reviews the theories on T-splines and their applications from four aspects. First, we discuss the development of the concept, properties, and algorithms of T-splines and the Tspline reconstruction. Then, we conducted an isogeometric analysis using T-splines. Next, we demonstrate the applications of T-splines in actual scenarios. Finally, we present a brief summary of the paper and expectations for the future. Results: The paper provides a brief introduction to the relevant papers on T-splines. The research on T-spline technology is currently active, and there are many studies on T-spline theories and applications. Among these, the spline theory on T-mesh has aroused widespread interest in engineering, especially in Computer-Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) and computer graphics. Conclusion: The T-spline surface is the most important new spline surface in the CADG field since the creation of the B-spline surface and non-uniform rational B-spline surface. Although the surface modeling technology based on the T-spline surface is developing rapidly, there are still some problems that need to be further studied.

Abstract:Methods for curve modeling with cubic algebraic curves based on geometric constraints are introduced in this paper. A 1-parameter family of cubic curves with four given points as well as two tangent lines at the endpoints is constructed in the first part of the paper. A 1-parameter family and 2-parameter family of cubic curve constructions are presented for interpolating two given endpoints and two given tangent lines as well as two given curvatures at the endpoints in the last part of the paper.

Abstract:Surface reconstruction is needed in many applications, and very often, the reconstructed surface is required to be of low, degree so that the surface can be computed efficiently and robustly. However, reconstructing surfaces with lower degrees are much more difficult than with higher degrees. The C-r continuous Hermite interpolant has to use a rather high polynomial degree, d greater than or equal to 4r + 1, unless each triangle in the triangulation is subdivided into several subtriangles. in this paper, we propose a method for constructing a G(1) quartic triangular B-B surface from a 3D triangulation. A sequence of triangulations are initially constructed by continuously removing a boundary vertex and all associated triangles from the 3D triangulation. According to this sequence of triangulations, an efficient algorithm is developed for constructing a smooth quartic surface over the 3D triangulation. The shape parameters in the G(1) condition are determined by a corresponding 2D triangulation of the 3D triangulation. This 2D triangulation has the sane topology as the 3D one. The new method has many advantages over existing methods.

Abstract:In this paper, a new interpolatory subdivision scheme, called ternary interpolating subdivision, for quadrilateral meshes with arbitrary topology is presented. It can be used to deal with not only extraordinary faces but also extraordinary vertices in polyhedral meshes of arbitrary topologies. It is shown that the ternary interpolating subdivision can generate a C1-continuous interpolatory surface. Some applications with open boundaries and curves to be interpolated are also discussed.

Abstract:We present a semi-stationary loop subdivision scheme based on the extension of box-spline. We deduce the eigenvalues of 2-neighbors subdivision matrix of the scheme, and prove that the subdivision surface is convergent, and has property of tangent plane continuity. Compared with the conventional loop subdivision method, as the subdivision matrix can update regularly with the iteration procedure, ours has stronger capability of modeling.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the idea of profit and loss modification, we present the iterative non-uniform B-spline curve and surface to settle a key problem in computer aided geometric design and reverse engineering, that is, constructing the curve (surface) fitting (interpolating) a given ordered point set without solving a linear system. We start with a piece of initial non-uniform B-spline curve (surface) which takes the given point set as its control point set. Then by adjusting its control points gradually with iterative formula, we can get a group of non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) with gradually higher precision. In this paper, using modern matrix theory, we strictly prove that the limit curve (surface) of the iteration interpolates the given point set. The non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) generated with the iteration have many advantages, such as satisfying the NURBS standard, having explicit expression, gaining locality, and convexity preserving, etc.

Abstract:A tensor product surface $\mathscr{S}$ is an algebraic surface that is defined as the closure of the image of a rational map $\phi$ from $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ to $\mathbb{P}^3$. We provide new determinantal representations of $\mathscr{S}$ under the assumptions that $\phi$ is generically injective and its base points are finitely many and locally complete intersections. These determinantal representations are matrices that are built from the coefficients of linear relations (syzygies) and quadratic relations of the bihomogeneous polynomials defining $\phi$. Our approach relies on a formalization and generalization of the method of moving quadrics introduced and studied by David Cox and his co-authors.

Abstract:An improved ternary subdivision interpolation scheme was developed for computer graphics applications that can manipulate open control polygons unlike the previous ternary scheme, with the resulting curve proved to be still C2-continuous. Parameterizations of the limit curve near the two endpoints are given with expressions for the boundary derivatives. The split joint problem is handled with the interpolating ternary subdivision scheme. The improved scheme can be used for modeling interpolation curves in computer aided geometric design systems, and provides a method for joining two limit curves of interpolating ternary subdivisions.
Ternary Subdivision Scheme for Quadrilateral Mesh with Fast Convergence

Abstract:This paper proposes a ternary stationary subdivision scheme for quadrilateral mesh. For regular and irregular quadrilateral meshes, different subdivision masks are applied to generate new vertices. The number of faces on the refined mesh is about nine times than that of the coarse mesh after every subdivision step. The limit surface generated by the new method is C2 continuous for a regular mesh and C1 continuous for an irregular mesh. Compared with typical subdivision schemes, the proposed scheme has faster convergence speed and the ability to solve arbitrary topological quadrilateral mesh. Some examples are given in the end to illustrate the performance of the new subdivision scheme.
