Abstract:A novel superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surface was fabricated by one-step electrodeposition on stainless steel meshes, and the durability and oil/water separation properties were assessed. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and optical contact angle measurements were used to characterize surface morphologies, chemical compositions, and wettabilities, respectively. The results indicated that the as-prepared mesh preformed excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 162 +/- 1 degrees and oil contact angle of (OCA) 0 degrees. Meanwhile, the as-prepared mesh also exhibited continuous separation capacity of many kinds of oil/water mixtures, and the separation efficiency for lubrication oil/water mixture was about 98.6%. In addition, after 10 separation cycles, the as-prepared mesh possessed the WCAs of 155 +/- 2 degrees, the OCAs of 0 degrees and the separation efficiency of 97.8% for lubrication oil/water mixtures. The as-prepared mesh also retained superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties after abrading, immersing in salt solutions and different pH solutions. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Copper Meshes Via Simply Soaking for Oil/ Water Separation

Abstract:A superhydrophobic copper mesh was prepared by a quick and straightforward two-step soaking operation to form the micro-nano coralline-like rough structure for oil/water separation. The modified copper mesh was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and WCAs. The obtained superhydrophobic copper mesh (WCA = 158.7°) showed excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The modified copper mesh also showed good self-cleaning ability and antifouling performance. The modified copper mesh showed excellent oil/water separation performance as reflected from its separation efficiency, separation flux, and reusability for colza oil, diesel oil, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and hexane oil/water mixtures with above 95% separation efficiency after 20 cycles of reuse. Due to low cost, time-saving, easy-to-prepare, and excellent separation performance, the superhydrophobic copper mesh would have a broad application prospect in oil/water separation.

Abstract:Metal copper mesh with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surface had been successfully fabricated via a facile solution-immersion process. The hierarchical structure was prepared on the commercial copper mesh surface by etching with the nitric acid. After being modified by 1-hexadecanethiol (HDT), the as-prepared mesh indicated both superhydrophobic and superoleophilic property simultaneously. This as-prepared metal mesh could then be applied for oil and water mixture separation. The unusual wettability of the as-prepared mesh was stable in corrosive conditions, such as acidic, basic, and salt solutions. The solution-immersion method was simple, time-saving, and inexpensive and therefore exhibited great potential application.
Ni-Al Layered Double Hydroxides (ldhs) Coated Superhydrophobic Mesh with Flower-Like Hierarchical Structure for Oil/water Separation

Abstract:Recently, there is an urgent demand to remove oil and organic solvents with low surface tension from oily wastewater, which promotes the application of interface biomimetic materials in oil/water separation. In our work, a novel NiAl LDHs coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless steel mesh (SS-SSM) with efficient oil/water separation performance was successfully prepared. The 3D flower-like structure intercalated by LDHs monocrystalline flakes was anchored on metallic wires in urea solution by a hydrothermal method and decorated with low surface energy molecules. The as-prepared mesh exhibited perfect superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 156° and sliding angle of 5°, thus achieving self-cleaning property. In addition, the separation efficiency for a series of oil/water mixtures of the coated mesh was studied, which was up to 98% for most sample oils. More importantly, even treated under severer conditions such as ultrasonic, abrasion and chemical etching solution, the as-prepared meshes possessed good reproducibility in terms of contact angles and separation efficiencies. It is expected that the designed mesh could provide a b brand-new method for superhydrophobic surface coating, making it a potential functional material for self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, fluid drag reduction and oil/water separation.
Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic cement-coated mesh for oil/water separation by gravity

Abstract:Oily wastewater has severely affected the water environment health. To better overcome this problem, a number of superhydrophobic or superoleophobic materials have been used for oil/water separation. Nevertheless, there are still great challenges in the simple and rapid environmentally- friendly preparation method. In this study, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface was fabricated for oil/water separation by soaking the stainless steel meshes (SSM) into cement solution. The as-fabricated surface exhibited a high oil contact angle (OCA, 159 ± 2°) in water environment. In addition, the cement-coated stainless steel meshes (CCSSM) separated the oil/water mixtures with a high separation efficiency of over 90% and a permeate flux of 3397 L m-2 h-1. Moreover, after reuse for 5 times, the cement-coated meshes maintained a separation efficiency of over 95% in separating the lubricating oil /water mixtures. Besides, they still maintained the underwater superoleophobicity after being stored in real seawater for 15 days or in extreme solution (pH, 4-12), thus displaying their corrosion resistance. Meanwhile, they bore sand impact for 8 times and possessed superior antifouling performance. Further, the underlying mechanism was also extensively examined.

Abstract:Because of the increasing amount of oily wastewater produced each day, it is important to develop superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic oil/water separation membranes with ultrahigh flux and high separation efficiency. In this paper, a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic N -isopropylacrylamide-coated stainless steel mesh was prepared through a simple and convenient graft polymerization approach. The obtained mesh was able to separate oil/water mixtures only by gravity. In addition, the mesh showed high-efficiency separation ability (99.2%) and ultrahigh flux (235239 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). Importantly, due to the complex cross-linked bilayer structure, the prepared mesh exhibited good recycling performance and chemical stability in highly saline, alkaline and acidic environments.

Abstract:In this study, a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless mesh coated with polytetrafluoroethylene/silicon dioxide (PTFE/SiO 2 ) was fabricated through electrostatic self-assembly method followed by sintering treatment. The PTFE was utilized to construct low-surface-energy surface and the SiO 2 nanoparticles were added to enhance its surface roughness. The as-prepared stainless mesh exhibited desirable superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with a water contact angle of 152° and oil contact angle of 0°. The coated stainless mesh could separate a variety of oil/water mixtures with high efficiency and it also exhibited good recyclability. Moreover, the corrosion-resistance of stainless mesh was greatly improved by coating it with PTFE. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements showed that the coated mesh could withstand high temperature of up to 430°C, indicating excellent thermal-resistance. It is believed that this ultra-robust stainless mesh would have significant potential applications in industry.

Abstract:Robustly superhydrophilic–underwater superoleophobic stainless steel meshes were fabricated via a simple and cost-effective one-step etching route. The obtained meshes show good underwater superoleophobicity not only in pure water but also in corrosive (acidic, alkaline and saline) aqueous solutions. Such special wettability allows water to permeate through the mesh while the oils are repelled on the mesh surface completely. The mesh can separate a series of oil/water mixtures under the gravity drive with high separation efficiency. Importantly, the etched meshes are capable of separating oil from acidic, alkaline and saline aqueous solutions, and the separation efficiency can reach above 94.3% after repeatedly separating toluene/corrosive water mixture for 16 cycles. In addition, the resulting mesh still possesses high underwater superoleophobicity with oil contact angle of 145° after the abrasion of 100 cycles. Thus, the etched mesh may be a potential candidate for practical oil/water separation applications.

Abstract:A novel micro/nanoscale rough structured superhydrophilic hybrid-coated mesh that shows underwater superoleophobic behavior is fabricated by spray casting or dipping nanoparticle–polymer suspensions on stainless steel mesh substrates. Water droplets can spread over the mesh completely; meanwhile, oil droplets can roll off the mesh at low tilt angles without any penetration. Besides overcoming the oil-fouling problem of many superhydrophilic coatings, this superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic mesh can be used to separate oil and water. The simple method used here to prepare the organic–inorganic hybrid coatings successfully produced controllable micro-nano binary roughness and also achieved a rough topography of micro-nano binary structure by controlling the content of inorganic particles. The mechanism of oil–water separation by the superhydrophilic and superoleophobic membrane is rationalized by considering capillary mechanics. Tetraethyl orathosilicate (TEOS) as a base was used to prepare the nano-SiO2 solution as a nano-dopant through a sol-gel process, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as the film binder and glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent; the mixture was dip-coated on the surface of 300-mesh stainless steel mesh to form superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic film. Properties of nano-SiO2 represented by infrared spectroscopy and surface topography of the film observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicated that the film surface had a coarse micro–nano binary structure; the effect of nano-SiO2 doping amount on the film’s surface topography and the effect of such surface topography on hydrophilicity of the film were studied; contact angle of water on such surface was tested as 0° by the surface contact angle tester and spread quickly; the underwater contact angle to oil was 158°, showing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The effect of the dosing amount of cross-linking agent to the waterproof swelling property and the permeate flux of the film were studied; the oil–water separation effect of the film to oil–water suspension and oil–water emulsion was studied too, and in both cases the separation efficiency reached 99%, which finally reduced the oil content to be lower than 50 mg/L. The effect of filtration times to permeate flux was studied, and it was found that the more hydrophilic the film was, the stronger the stain resistance would be, and the permeate flux would gradually decrease along with the increase of filtration times.

Abstract:Selective oil removal from water is a critical problem in the realm of environmental science and engineering. Metallic meshes arecommonly used as potential oil-water separators due to their low cost and good mechanical properties. Meshes with selective wettability can effectively remove oil or water from their mixtures using easy gravity-based filtration. In this work, a mechanically robust Ni-WS2 based superhydrophobic stainless steel mesh (SHSM) has been developed via one-step electrodeposition. The surface morphologies, surface roughness, phase composition, and wettability were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Water Contact Angle (WCA) measurements respectively. A high water contact angle of 169.5° with excellent superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties was achieved by tuning the surface morphology of the mesh. The oil/water separation performance of the developed SHSM was studied and the efficiency was greater than 98% even after multiple uses. Further, the SHSM is highly corrosion-resistant and exhibits self-cleaning properties with excellent mechanical and chemical stability against strong acidic/alkaline solutions. Thus, the developed multifunctional SHSM demonstrates its potential at industrial-level applications of oil-water separation under harsh environments.

Fabrication of durable underoil superhydrophobic surfaces with self-cleaning and oil-water separation properties

Abstract:In this study, a simple method without any additional chemical modification is proposed to fabricate underoil superhydrophobic surfaces with micro- and nano-hierarchical structures using a nanosecond laser system. The fabricated surfaces exhibited extreme superhydrophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity with high contact angles of 153.8 ± 1.5° and 161.3 ± 1.1°, respectively. The results show that even after 20 abrasion cycles, the fabricated surfaces retained water repellency and self-cleaning performance under oil, while the superhydrophobicity in air was not resistant to wear. In addition, the fabricated brass meshes can also be used to separate oil in an oil-water mixture based on the prewetting induced underoil superhydrophobicity after being damaged. The separation efficiency was as high as 97.8%, which made them more appropriate for the oil-water separation than those based on superhydrophobicity. The proposed fabrication method is suitable for large-scale and mass production and provides a new avenue and possibility for further development of robust functional interface materials.

Abstract:A facile and environmentally friendly method was reported for the fabrication of superhydrophobic steel mesh by depositing with dual-scale Polystyrene@Silica (PS@SiO2) particles coated with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS), which provided 3D multi-scale hierarchical rough surface structure with low surface energy to perform the superhydrophobic effect. PS particles of ~1 μm and ~200 nm were first synthesized via dispersion polymerization and emulsion polymerization, respectively. The obtained PS particles were then used as template for the silification using tetraethyl orthosilicate as the precursor. After treated with HDTMS, the PS@SiO2 particles were deposited on steel mesh forming dual-sized hierarchical structures. The as-prepared film exhibited excellent water repellence with a water contact angle of 161.6° ± 1.1° and water contact angle hysteresis of 3.4°. It also showed efficient and rapid oil/water separation ability and could be repeatedly used for at least 5 times. This facile synthesis strategy for fabricating multifunctional steel mesh provides potential applications in large-scale oil–water separation.
Development of Durable, Fluorine-free, and Transparent Superhydrophobic Surfaces for Oil/Water Separation.

Abstract:Although artificial superhydrophobic materials have extensive and significant applications in antifouling, self-cleaning, anti-icing, fluid transport, oil/water separation, and so forth, the poor robustness of these surfaces has always been a bottleneck for their development in practical industrial applications. Here, we report a facile, economical, efficient, and versatile strategy to prepare environmentally friendly, mechanically robust, and transparent superhydrophobic surfaces by combining adhesive and hydrophobic paint, which is applicable for both hard and soft substrates. The coated substrates exhibit excellent superhydrophobic property and ultralow adhesion with water (contact angle ≈ 160° and sliding angle <2°). Additionally, the coated surface maintained its superhydrophobicity even after 325 sandpaper abrasion cycles, showing remarkable mechanical robustness. Furthermore, the coated surfaces were applied to separate oil/water mixtures because of their unique characteristics of being simultaneously superhydrophobic and superoleophilic. In addition, it is believed that this fabrication method is significant, promising, and feasible for mass production of superhydrophobic surfaces for industrial applications.

Abstract:A superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic composite coating (ES@SSM) was fabricated through etching and subsequent modification of stainless steel mesh (SSM). It had a water contact angle of 0° in the air, an oleophobic angle of 162.7° underwater, and a sliding angle of 5°. Even after 15 days, the separation efficiency of crude oil-water was up to 98.6% and had a high water flux of 13535 L m−2 h−1. After 50 sandy impacts, the ES@SSM had an oil contact angle of 158.5° and sliding angles of 13° underwater. Experimental results show that the water flux and the contact angle were closely related, and there was a negative correlation between the water flux and the water contact angle. Furthermore, the ES@SSM was featured with long-term stability, chemical stability and excellent mechanical stability. Apart from that, it has potential application value in the field of oil and water treatment.

Abstract:How to fabricate durable superhydrophobic materials for cyclic oil/water separation to solve oil-induced pollutions is still a problem. Herein, we fabricated a durable Superhydrophobic Stainless Steel Mesh (SH-SSM) with nano/micro flower-like sheets by self-assembly of zinc stearate for the cyclic separation of various oil/water mixtures. The SH-SSM exhibits durable superhydrophobicity against static or dynamic treatments. In virtue of durable superhydrophobicity of the SH-SSM, the dusts on surface of SH-SSM can be removed completely by running water immediately showing excellent self-cleaning performance. Moreover, the SH-SSM can be used to perform gravity-driven separation of heavy oil/water and light oil/water mixtures by utilizing its superhydrophobicity that oil phase penetrates the mesh and water phase is restricted. Separation efficiencies of the SH-SSM can reach 99.99%. After 20 cycles of separation, the separation efficiencies for are > 97.00% and > 98.25% for heavy oil/water and light oil/water mixtures, respectively. Flux values of dichloromethane, hexane and petroleum ether are 2.5 × 10 5 L m −2 h −1 , 1.7 × 10 5 L m −2 h −1 , and 1.8 × 10 5 L m −2 h −1 , respectively. This study proposes a facial approach to prepare durable superhydrophobic and self-cleaning material for cyclic and fast separation of oil/water.

Abstract:Oil leakage and the discharge of industrial oil/water mixtures have posed a serious threat to the water environment and ecosystem. With the purpose of tackling this issue, a Ni3S2 coated mesh with switchable wettability was fabricated for efficient oil-water separation. Surface morphology and chemical compositions of the coated mesh were characterized to analyze the formation mechanism and their influence on surface wettability. The reversible transition between superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity allows the coated mesh to selectively separate heavy or light oil under gravity, respectively. A T-shaped tube with a superhydrophobic mesh and an underwater superoleophobic mesh was proposed to overcome the limitation of oil density and the conventionally necessary intrusion pressure to achieve continuous and efficient separation. This system functioned well in separating complex mixtures including oil-hot water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions. Therefore, this Ni3S2 nanorods grown on stainless steel mesh present a promising solution towards oily water treatment.

Abstract:Oily wastewater and oil spill have always been a common concern of environmental problems, and superwetting materials are the key to oil-water separation. However, the superwetting material is constantly blocked by oil, which is a crucial obstacle to its practical application. In this study, we propose a novel strategy to protect the underlying superhydrophilic layer by using a hydrophobic aluminate coupling agent. And we construct the superhydrophilic layer with cellulose and the superoleophobic surface with FS50-modified rough nanoparticles. Porous ceramics can achieve stable superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic properties through a simple soaking step (modified CM). The advanced and receding contact angles on the modified CM surface were 151.74° and 149.11° for crude oil. The modified CM could maintain the contact angle of oil above 150° at various temperatures, pH values, and abrasion. In the continuous separation process, the flux remained above 1.4×10 4 L m -2 h -1 , and the separation efficiency could achieve above 99% for soybean oil. Besides, the modified CM could also separate oil-in-water emulsion. Further, we proposed the coexistence and fabrication mechanism of superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic interface. This study provides new design ideas for developing durable oil-water separation materials.

Abstract:Due to the inherent differences in surface tension between water and oil, it is a challenge to fabricate air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic materials despite their promising potential in the field of oil/water separation. Herein, a facile approach is developed to fabricate air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic SiO2 coating by combination of controllable modifying SiO2 nanoparticle surface by both hydrophilic groups (i.e., -OH groups) and oleophobic groups (i.e., fluorinated groups) with constructing porous and hierarchical structures. Hydroxyl-modified SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized using a base-catalysed procedure in the presence of ammonia or NaOH. Chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) is introduced to bind SiO2 by forming a unique hydrogen bond between HACC and -OH, followed by adding pentadecafluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to complex with HACC to form fluorinated groups. The SiO2 coatings are fabricated on various substrates (e.g., glass, foam and Cu mesh) by spraying procedure and characterized using SEM, FTIR, XPS, etc. The contact angles of oils (e.g., pump oil, castor oil, corn oil, hexadecane and bean oil) and water on the coatings are over 150° and close to 0°, respectively. By optimization, the representative SiO2-coated Cu mesh displayed high-efficiency of 99.2% in separating water from mixture of water/pump oil, and high penetration flux of 1.41 × 104 L·m-2 ·h-1. Besides, the coating maintains its superhydrophilic-superoleophobic properties even after 110 cycles of sandpaper abrasion or after being immersed in water for 3 h. After 20 cycles of oil/water separation, the coating retains separation efficiency up to 97.93%. This study provides a new and universal protocol to fabricate unique superwetting surfaces with effective oil/water separation performance, long-term durability and outstanding reusability.
An Accessible Superhydrophobic Coating with Nanostructure for Continuously Oil/water Separation

Abstract:It is an urgent need to develop low-cost, scalable-fabricating materials, technologies and equipments that are capable to separate oil-water mixtures efficiently. Traditional separation technologies are discontinuous and expensive. Large-scale separation devices are difficult to be prepared. Here we report stainless steel wire mesh coated with Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic coating, which can be easily prepared by solution method. Our mesh can selectively and effectively (>95%) separate oil from oil/water mixtures, such as gasoline, diesel, vegetable oil and kerosene/water mixtures without any extrapower. The separation equipment can be designed to achieve separate and continuous collection of oil and water. We anticipate that our separation method will have numerous applications, including emergency treatment of spill accidents of oil and derivative products, wastewater treatment and fuel purification.
