Abstract:We report a novel RuO2-NPG//Co(OH)(2)-NPG asymmetric supercapacitor with a high specific capacitance and a wide potential window in which bifunctional nanoporous gold is used as both the highly conductive supports of the pseudocapacitive oxides and the 3D current collectors in the device. The RuO2-NPG and Co(OH)(2)-NPG electrodes can reach specific capacitances of 1300 F g(-1) and 1800 F g(-1), respectively, which provide comparatively high specific capacitances in relation to metal oxide/carbon electrodes, giving rise to an asymmetric oxide pseudocapacitor with a large capacitance of similar to 350 F g(-1), high working voltage of 1.6 V and an ultrahigh energy density of similar to 120 W h kg(-1).
Ultrahigh Capacitance of Nanoporous Metal Enhanced Conductive Polymer Pseudocapacitors

Abstract:A high energy density is critical for supercapacitors to supersede conventional batteries for the applications where both high power and high energy are demanded. Here we report nanoporous metal/conductive polymer hybrid electrodes fabricated by electrochemically plating conductive polypyrrole into nanoporous channels of a dealloyed nanoporous metal. The low electric resistance and open porosity of the nanoporous metal give rise to excellent conductivity of electrons and ions and hence dramatically improved electrochemical performances of the pseudocapacitive polypyrrole. Supercapacitors based on the hybrid electrodes show an ultrahigh energy density of similar to 100 Wh kg(-1) in a three-electrode, comparable to NiMH batteries, as well as high power density of similar to 57 kW kg(-1). Cycling stability measurements demonstrate that the hybrid electrode can retain 85% of the maximum capacitance after 3000 cycles and the degeneration is mainly caused by the dissolution of polypyrrole during charge/discharge cycling. Facile fabrication of a novel nanoporous Au/AgO composite for electrochemical double-layer capacitor

Abstract:In this work, a novel nanoporous gold/silver oxide (NP Au/AgO) composite (NPAAC) was fabricated by a simple two-step partial dealloying-stripping process. Microstructural and electrochemical characterizations suggested that the NPAAC has a bicontinuous, interpenetrating nanoporous structure with ultrafine ligament-channel sizes down to similar to 10 nm, and it delivered a rectangle cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve with a wide electrochemical double-layer region from -0.3 to 0.7 V (vs. Ag/AgCl in sulfuric acid) and a specific capacitance of similar to 80 F g(-1). Moreover, the NPAAC revealed a superior cyclic performance as compared to metal-based pseudocapacitors, with stable charge-discharge cycling at similar to 77 F g(-1) for more than ten thousand times with no detectable degradation. This work demonstrates that the new systems of nanoporous noble metal/metal-oxide composites could be similarly fabricated by this approach and developed as potential double-layer capacitors with comparable cyclic performance to carbon-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this study, we report that the supercapacitor performance of polypyrrole (PPy) in non-aqueous electrolytes can be dramatically improved by highly conductive nanoporous gold which acts as both the support of active PPy and the current collector of supercapacitors. The excellent electronic conductivity, rich porous structure and large surface area of the nanoporous electrodes give rise to a high specific capacitance and low internal resistance in non-aqueous electrolytes. Combining with a wide working potential window of ~2V, the non-aqueous PPy-based supercapacitors show an extraordinary energy density and power density.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous polypyrrole nanowires/manganese oxides nanoflakes (MnO2 NFs@PPy NWs) core/shell nanostructures were successfully constructed through a simple, convenient and environmentally friendly method by using PPy nanowires as the core buffer and K-Birnessite type MnO2 as the shell. The core/shell nanostructures effectively increase active surface areas and decrease the ion transmission distance, which is conducive to the efficient transfer of ions. The MnO2 NFs@PPy NWs core/shell nanostructures exhibited not only high specific capacitance (276 F g(-1) at 2 A g(-1)) but also excellent capacitance retained ratio of 72.5% under extreme charge/discharge conditions (200 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1)) due to the synergistic effect by combining the merits of MnO2 and PPy. Using such hierarchical nanostructure as the positive electrode, we further demonstrate that ultra-flexible asymmetrical supercapacitors (AFSCs) (MnO2@PPy//AC) possess excellent cycling stability (90.3% after 6000 cycles at 3 A g (-1)), mechanical flexibility, large voltage operation window (1.8-2.0 V vs. SCE) and high energy densities at all charge/discharge conditions (25.8 W h kg(-1) at the power density of 901.7 W kg(-1), and 17.1 W h kg(-1) at the power density of 9000 W kg(-1), respectively).

Abstract:All-so lid-state flexible supercapacitors have shown great potential in wearable and portable electronics.In this work, a flexible asymmetric pseudocapacitor（FAPC） is fabricated by using MnO 2 nanosheetscarbon fabric as cathode and Fe 2 O 3 nanowire-carbon fabric as anode in the presence of PVA-LiCl as gel electrolyte. With high area capacitances of MnO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 based electrodes by optimizing the reaction conditions, the device shows high working potential of 1.8 V, high area capacitance of 83.3 mF/cm~2（119 F/g）, stable cycling performance with 82.3% of capacitance retention after 5000 cycles, and a competitive energy density of 53.55 Wh/kg in the broader context of MnO 2 -based supercapacitors. In addition, the FAPC demonstrates excellent mechanical stability and flexibility with negligible degradation of electrochemical performance after numerous bending tests, establishing it as a promising candidate for portable and wearable energy storage.
Ultrathin porous Mn(PO3)2 nanosheets and MoO2 nanocrystal arrays on N, P-dual-doped graphene for high-energy asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:Recently, heteroatom doped graphene based architectures exhibit promising prospects in the commercial application of supercapacitors because of their higher electrical conductivity and a wider potential window. Herein, we report on ultrathin porous nanosheets Mn(PO3)2 and MoO2 nanocrystal array on N, P dual-doped graphene (NPG) framework and study their supercapacitor properties. The irregularly overhead Mn(PO3)2 present a unique structure, which provide clear electron/ion transport channels to accelerate charge transfer together with the three-dimensional NPG structure. The obtained Mn(PO3)2/NPG hybrid electrode exhibit an extraordinary specific capacity (2073.4F g−1, 1 A g−1) and good rate performance (capacity retention rate of 77.8% from 1 A g−1 to 20 A g−1). In addition, the 3D NPG coated with MoO2 nanocrystal have also made a great progress in electrochemical performance of large capacitance and merely 5.54% fading capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Subsequently, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) hybrid devices based on Mn(PO3)2/NPG as the positive electrode and MoO2/NPG as the negative electrode has a wide voltage range of 0 ~ 1.8 V, delivers an excellent CF value of 213.8F g−1 and keeps 91.5% initial capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, the as-prepared ASC also obtains an outstanding energy density of 96.2 W h kg−1 at a power performance of 726.73 W kg−1, which demonstrate that the reasonable conductive network of Mn(PO3)2/NPG//MoO2/NPG devices can greatly increase the utilization of active substances, improve the performance in all aspects and open up new avenues of the future application and development of supercapacitors.

Abstract:The design of flexible composite electrodes has become the top priority in energy storage devices for the development of future wearable intelligent electronics. However, searching for fully integrated, ultrathin flexible composite electrodes with satisfying electrochemical performance is still a major challenge. Herein, we introduce a nanoporous gold metallic glass (MG) ribbon-based composite electrode with excellent electric conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and extra capacitance by integrating polypyrrole (PPy) into wrinkled nanoporous ribbon (NPG@MG). The “freestanding, ultrathin, highly conductive and flexible” nature of the composite electrode prevents the conducting polymer from structural instability resulting from the volume swell and shrink during the charging/discharging circulation, and the packed PPy provides protection for the wrinkled topology on the surface of the MG ribbon. The capacitance of pure NPG@MG-PPy composite electrode reached 393 mF·cm−2. The ultra-thin all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor demonstrates an excellent capacitance of 172 mF·cm−2 (14.8 F·cm−3), accompanied by a superior cycling capability after 8000 charge/discharge cycles attributed to mechanical flexibility. The areal energy density also reached 0.74 mWh·cm−3 (9 μWh·cm−2) at a power density of 1 μW·cm−2. This work provides valuable concepts on the design of PPy-based hybrid materials for flexible energy storage systems with greatly enhanced electrochemical performances.Graphical abstract

Abstract:NiCo2O4 nanoflowers with high specific surface area were prepared on nickel foam (NF) by hydrothermal method and used as frameworks for developing cathode and anode of flexible asymmetric supercapacitor. With the unique nanoflower-like NiCo2O4 arrays as skeleton, the NiCo2O4/Au/MnO2 cathode was prepared by goldspraying and electrochemical deposition and the NiCo2S4/PPy anode was prepared by second-hydrothermal and electro-polymerization. The hierarchical structured electrodes offer sufficient redox sites and adequate channels for accelerating ion and electron transport between electrodes and electrolyte. Moreover, the NiCo2S4/ PPy was first reported as the anode, and its cycling stability (capacitance retention of 86.04 % after 5000 cycles) and specific capacitance (1612.5F/g at 1 A/g). The assembled flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (NiCo2O4/Au/MnO2 // NiCo2S4/PPy) displays a high energy density of 206.37 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 398.57 W kg- 1 and an outstanding cyclability (capacitance retention of 83.41 % after 5000 cycles).

Abstract:With ever-increasing demands for high-energy and high-power operation of compact energy storage devices, asymmetric pseudocapacitors attract tremendous attention due to their high volumetric energy and fast charge/discharge capability. However, it is challenging to achieve compact structures with abundant ions access and fast charge transport for both positive and negative electrodes simultaneously. Herein, we designed a flexible and asymmetric pseudocapacitor using a Ti3C2Tx MXene film with wavy architecture as the negative electrode, and a graphene/carbon nanotube/polyaniline (rGO/CNT/PANI) ternary nanocomposite film resistive to anodic oxidation as the positive electrode, respectively. The wavy MXene facilitates ion transport and maintains its highly compact structure, resulting in an ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of 1277 F cm−3 and a significantly enhanced rate capability with 89% capacitance retention at 1000 mV s−1. The compatible metal-free rGO/CNT/PANI positive electrode with molecular-level integration of PANI on graphene and further insertion of CNT in between PANI/G sheets also sets an extremely high volumetric capacitance of 1038 F cm−3 and excellent rate performance. As a result, Ti3C2Tx//rGO/CNT/PANI asymmetric device outputs both high volumetric energy density of 70 Wh L−1 and high volumetric power density of 111 kW L−1 (per volume of active material), which surpasses most state-of-the-art aqueous asymmetric and symmetric devices.

Abstract:As a newly emerging 2D materials, MXene as electrode materials can be widely used in supercapacitors. However, symmetric supercapacitors based on MXene have a narrow voltage window due to oxidation occurs at a high anode potential. In this study, flexible asymmetric supercapacitor device is designed and fabricated by combining MXene/carbon fabric (CF) as the negative electrode and CF/MnO2 as the positive electrode in neutral electrolyte. The voltage window of the asymmetric device is successfully increased to 1.5 V, which is more than twice wider than that of the symmetric device. The maximum specific capacitance is 20.5 F g−1 at 1.5 A g−1. The specific capacitance remains at 84% after 3000 charge-discharge cycles at 1.5 A g−1. Furthermore, two asymmetric devices after bending 1000 times greater than 90° connected in series can easily power a 3 V LED for 90 min. The energy density of the asymmetric device is 6.4 W h kg−1 at 1107.7 W kg−1 power density. The work presented here shows that the asymmetric device based on MXene//MnO2 have excellent application prospects for the next generation of electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible electrode materials with high volumetric capacitance are promising to applications in portable and wearable capacitive storage devices. Here, we utilized the highly flexible and conductive NP-Ag substrate to successfully develop a flexible nanoporous (OH)2 (NP–(OH)2) thin film electrode. After 100 multiple bending cycles, the (OH)2 electrode can keep the original nanostructures and flexibility. The flexible (OH)2 electrode exhibits the high volumetric capacitance of 929 F cm−3 at a current density of 2 A cm−3, which is higher than many reported supercapacitor electrodes. The flexible (OH)2 electrode exhibits good supercapacitor performance even under the bending state. Moreover, the as-assembled (OH)2 symmetric supercapacitor device has high energy density of 20.07 mWh cm−3 at power density of 0.85 W cm−3. The device supercapacitor retains 75% capacitance of the initial value at 2 A cm−3 after 2000 cycles. This work provides an insight into the rational design of the highly flexible, high-performance supercapacitor electrodes with the potential application in portable or wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:The rapid development of personal electronic equipment has stimulated the research upsurge on flexible supercapacitors with high energy density and bending tolerance. Construction of flexible asymmetric supercapacitors can effectively improve the energy density via broadening voltage window. Up to date, most of the asymmetric devices are fabricated by assembling anode, cathode and separator together, which inevitably brings unnecessary mass and volume, and makes the components poorly contacted, and decreases the resistance to repeated bending of devices. To overcome these issues, we design an integrated flexible asymmetric supercapacitor. Continuous gold layers are deposited on the two sides of the porous organic film to form the Au/porous film/Au sandwich structure, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polypyrrole-graphene oxide (PPy-GO) are then electrochemically deposited on two gold layers respectively to serve as the positive and negative electrode material. As expected, the obtained devices expand the operating voltage to 1.2 V when Li2SO4/polyvinylene alcohol is used as gel electrolyte. The optimal cell possesses energy density of 2.98 mu Wh cm(-2) at 0.12 mW cm(-2), exhibits excellent bending tolerance (capacitance can retain 99.3% of its initial value after 10000 repeated bending cycles). Meanwhile, the devices can be connected in series by simple super-position and light up a light-emitting diode. This flexible integrated device may exhibit potential applications in the future. Flexible core/shelled PPy@PANI nanotube porous films for hybrid supercapacitors

Abstract:Abstract Flexibility of the films and the limited ion transport in the vertical direction of film highly restrict the development of flexible supercapacitors. Herein, we have developed hybrid porous films consisting of N-doped holey graphene nanosheets (NHGR) with abundant in-plane nanopores and the vertically aligned polyaniline nanowires arrays on polypyrrole nanotubes (PPy@PANI) via a two-step oxidative polymerization strategy and vacuum filtration. The rational design can efficiently shorten the diffusion path of electrons/ions, alleviate volume variation of electrodes during cycling, enhance electric conductivity of the hybrids, and while offer abundant active interfacial sites for electrochemical reaction. Benefiting from the distinctive structural and compositional merits, the obtained PPy@PANI/NHGR film electrode manifests an excellent electrochemical properties in terms of specific capacity (1348 mF cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 ), rate capability (81.2% capacitance retention from 1 to 30 mA cm −2 ), and cycling stability (capacitance retention of 73.7% at 20 mA cm −2 after 7000 cycles). Matched with NHGR negative electrode, the assembled flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor displays a remarkable areal capacitance of 359 mF cm −2 at 5 mA cm −2 , maximum areal energy density of 112.2 μ Wh cm −2 at 3.747 mW cm −2 , and good flexibility at various bending angles while preserving stable cycling performance. The result shows the PPy@PANI/NHGR film with high flexibility and 3D ions transport channels is highly attractive for flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) and manganese dioxide (MnO2) are forward-looking electrode materials due to their high specific capacitance. But poor cyclic stability of PANI and low power density of MnO2 limit their development. In this paper, PANI and MnO2 were synthesized on carbon cloth (CC) by electrochemical polymerization with the addition of LiClO4. The capacitance of CC/PANI-MnO2 increases to 634.0 F g−1 (380.4 C g−1) at 1 A g−1. And its decent electrochemical performances can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of PANI and MnO2. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on CC/PANI-MnO2 as positive electrode and CC/MXene as negative electrode were assembled to broaden the potential range. The device has capacitance of 21.1 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and the capacitance retention of 83% after 4000 cycles. The device shows an energy density of 47.25 μWh cm−2 at a power density of 2.40 mW cm−2. Furthermore, the ductility of the device was explored to resist the bending and stretching from external forces. The research of flexible asymmetric supercapacitors herein further improves the practical application of energy storage devices.

Ultrahigh‐Areal‐Capacitance Flexible Supercapacitor Electrodes Enabled by Conformal P3MT on Horizontally Aligned Carbon‐Nanotube Arrays

Abstract:Nanocarbon electronic conductors combined with pseudocapacitive materials, such as conducting polymers, display outstanding electrochemical properties and mechanical flexibility. These characteristics enable the fabrication of flexible electrodes for energy‐storage devices; that is, supercapacitors that are wearable or can be formed into shapes that are easily integrated into vehicle parts. To date, most nanocarbon materials such as nanofibers are randomly dispersed as a network in a flexible matrix. This morphology inhibits ion transport, particularly under the high current density necessary for devices requiring high power density. Novel flexible densified horizontally aligned carbon nanotube arrays (HACNTs) with controlled nanomorphology for improved ion transport are introduced and combined with conformally coated poly(3‐methylthiophene) (P3MT) conducting polymer to impart pseudocapacitance. The resulting P3MT/HACNT nanocomposite electrodes exhibit high areal capacitance of 3.1 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2, with areal capacitance remaining at 1.8 F cm−2 even at a current density of 200 mA cm−2. The asymmetric supercapacitor cell also delivers more than 1–2 orders of magnitude improvement in both areal energy and power density over state‐of‐the‐art cells. Furthermore, little change in cell performance is observed under high strain, demonstrating the mechanical and electrochemical stability of the electrodes.

MnO 2 /polypyrrole-electrodeposited carbonized paper fiber-based for flexible asymmetric supercapacitors with high electrochemical and mechanical reliability

Abstract:The rapid development of intelligent electronic products and wearable devices has stimulated the research upsurge on flexible supercapacitors. However, achieving supercapacitors with both high flexibility and high energy density remains a huge challenge. Herein, we develop a novel strategy to fabricate flexible asymmetric supercapacitor comprised of carbonized paper fiber/graphene/tannic acid (CGTA), manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) and polypyrrole (PPy) based film electrode. The electrode synthesized via electrochemical deposition avoided the necessity to use non-conductive binders and offered excellent electrochemical performance. The resultant MnO 2 @CGTA and film electrode exhibit high areal specific capacitance of 0.97 F cm −2 and 0.99 F cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 , respectively. The structural integrity provided by MnO 2 @CGTA and film electrode facilitated excellent electrochemical stability with capacitance retention of 89.93 % and 91.06 % after 5000 charge/discharge cycles, respectively. Furthermore, the flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (MnO 2 @CGTA//) is assembled and it demonstrates high specific capacitance of about 1.383 F cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 , excellent energy density of 192.08 μWh cm −2 at a power density of 0.5 mW cm −2 , and good cycle stability of 90.12 % capacitance retention after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. Even after 500 bending/unbending cycles, still about 86.43 % of its initial capacitance is retained.

High-performance three-dimensional nanoporous gold based electrodes for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors

Abstract:High-performance, flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-polypyrrole (PPy)/nanoporous gold (NPG) electrodes are prepared by a facile electrochemical interfacial polymerization method using NPG as the substrate. Owing to the synergistic effect of three-dimensional (3D) porous architecture and superior electrical conductivity, the prepared electrode not only exhibits a good areal capacitance (232 mF/cm2), but also shows high volumetric capacitance (555.6 F/cm3). Hence, an all-solid-state supercapacitor assembled with rGO-PPy/NPG electrodes exhibits a high energy density of 238.8 mW h/cm3. Besides, this flexible supercapacitor also shows excellent cycling stability with retention of 91% with respect to the initial capacitance after 2000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles. This work offers a novel avenue for designing flexible supercapacitor.

Abstract:The lack of sufficient energy density has been the key obstacle that hinders the wide range of applications of electrochemical supercapacitors. Improving both specific capacitance and stable potential window appears to be the only route to achieve high-energy-density supercapacitors. Although nonaqueous electrolytes can provide large working potential windows, the pseudocapacitance of active materials is usually much lower in nonaqueous electrolytes than in aqueous solutions, resulting in low energy density. In this study we report novel nonaqueous MnO2@nanoporous gold based supercapacitors. The capacitive performances of MnO2 in nonaqueous electrolytes are dramatically improved by nanoporous gold. The excellent electronic conductivity, rich porous structure and large surface area of the nanoporous electrodes give rise to low internal resistance, good ionic contact and thus enhanced redox reactions for high specific capacitance of MnO2 in non-aqueous electrolytes with a large working potential window.

Abstract:As the fast development of lightweight and wearable electronic products, high-performance ultrathin flexible supercapacitors have become a promising type of energy storage devices which are attracting great attention. Integrating all the components of supercapacitor into the two sides of a porous film could avoid displacement and delamination between component layers which contributes to enhancing device flexibility. Such an "all-in-one" integration would also simplify manufacturing process compared with traditional sandwich-like laminated process. Herein, we propose a convenient and scalable fabrication method for all-in-one ultrathin supercapacitor with table electrochemical performance and excellent flexibility. The supercapacitor is prepared by integrating current collector, cathode, and anode into one piece of ultrathin electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers membrane. Firstly, the membrane is metalized with Ni by two sides as current collectors, leaving the middle part as the separator. Subsequently, MnO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> and polypyrrole (PPy) are loaded on the two conductive sides of the membrane by electrochemically deposition respectively to form MnO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> //separator//PPy all-in-one structure which drastically minimizes the proportion of inactive materials. The assembled all-in-one supercapacitors exhibited enhanced capacitive performance (28.48 F/g at 50 mV/s), good cycling stability (68.5% capacity retention after 3200 cycles at 50 mV/s), and excellent flexibility. It displays great potential in broad market of emerging various flexible, wearable, and portable energy electronic devices.
