Abstract:Carbon@FeSe nanocomposites with homogeneous hollow microspherical and nanotubular structures are prepared using sulfonated polystyrene microspheres and sulfonated poly(divinylbenzene) nanotubes as both the template and carbon source. Benefiting from their hollow core-shell and hierarchical micro/nanostructures, the carbon@FeSe nanocomposites as the anode material of Li-ion batteries exhibit high capacities with a steady discharge plateau of 1.5 V (vs. Li/Li+), stable cycling performance (700 mAhg(-1) in the 200th cycle at 800 mAg(-1)), and good rate behavior (620 mAhg(-1) at 16 Ag-1). The steady discharge plateau of carbon@FeSe, together with its high capacity, renders it a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Using FeOOH nanorods as precursors, alpha-Fe2O3-Ag hybrid nanorods were prepared through a novel layer-by-layer assembly and subsequent annealing approach. The morphology, structure and electrochemical performance of the products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM), and electrochemical tests. It is indicated that numerous Ag nano-particles are homogeneously distributed on the surface of alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod. When evaluated as an anode for Li-ion battery, the alpha-Fe2O3-Ag hybrid nanorods exhibit better cyclic performance and higher capacities. A high capacity of 549. 8 mA . h/g can be retained after 180 discharge/charge cycles.

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery anode materials such as iron oxide suffer from large volume expansion during lithiation. In light of this problem, this work uses a template method to investigate the hollow structure that controls the Fe3O4@C void size. In the experiment, the hollow structure is controlled by the dosage of ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and Fe2O3 is coated with phenolic resin to reduce carbon to obtain an anode electrode material with excellent performance. The microstructure and morphology of the samples are analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brutern-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their electrical properties are characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), galvanostatic intermittent titration analysis, and galvanostatic charge–discharge. According to the results, Fe3O4@C-1.0 has a large vacancy, and the structure does not crack during the battery charging and discharging process. Furthermore, it exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, rate performance, and stable cycle performance.

Abstract:The commercialized LIBs employing graphite as anodes currently suffer a series of problems from the safety problem, low theoretical capacity (372 mAh g−1) and bad rate capability. Herein, hollow microspheres MnFe2O4 (MFO) and nanoparticles MFO have been synthesized. Compared with the nanoparticles MFO, the hollow microspheres MFO as an anode material with novel structure demonstrate superior electrochemical performance, with large specific reversible capacity (1100 mAh g−1 at the specific current of 0.5 C after 100 cycles), high rate capability (more than 500 mAh g−1 even at 5.0 C) and good cyclability with little fading (1.4 % after 100 cycles). The excellent cycling performance is associated with the hollow microsphere structure with large specific surface areas, which can accommodate the severe mechanism strains and ensure more contact area between active material and electrolyte, thus good for diffusion of electrolyte and provide more reaction sites. This work presents a meaningful way for the preparation of MFO with different morphology as superior alternative anodes for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow nano/micro structure has received wide attention in new-generation, high-performance lithium-ion battery applications. Here, novel hierarchical hollow Fe2O3 micro-flowers composed of porous nanosheets are prepared by controlled thermal decomposition of the iron alkoxide precursor. On the basis of morphology investigations in time-dependent experiments, the possible two-stage growth mechanism of the hollow flower-like iron alkoxide is proposed. When used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the hollow Fe2O3 micro-flowers exhibit superior cycling performance (960 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) up to 250 cycles) and rate capability (reversible charging capacity of 750 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) after 500 cycles and 518 mA h g(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1) after 670 cycles) thanks to their hollow interiors and the porous nanosheet subunits. This research suggests that the hollow Fe2O3 micro-flowers could be suitable as a high rate performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.
Synthesis and Electrochemical Investigation of Hollow Hierarchical Metal Oxide Microspheres for High Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this paper, a versatile facile route to synthesize mesoporous hollow-structured metal oxides is demonstrated using sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres as hard templates. SEM and TEM images show that the Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO hollow microspheres are self-assembled by nanorods, nanoparticles and nanosheets, respectively. Hollow and mesoporous structures not only provide enhanced mechanical stabilities to buffer the large volume changes during the charge/discharge processes, but also provide large specific areas for sufficient penetration of electrolyte, thus leading to an excellent cyclic stability and rate capability. As proofs-of-concepts, all of the hollow and mesoporous metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO) deliver high initial discharge capacities and good capacity retentions (>80%) after more than 100 cycles in half cells. Most important of all, these assembled full-cells (MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2) also delivere excellent electrochemical performances. This work clearly demonstrates that the MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2 configuration are promising alternative high power-density energy storage devices in the near future.
Robust Hollow Bowl-like Α-Fe2o3 Nanostructures with Enhanced Electrochemical Lithium Storage Performance

Abstract:The design and synthesis of hollow-nanostructured transition metal oxide-based anodes is of great importance for long-term operation of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a special hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure is controllably synthesized through a facile hydrothermal technique and exhibits great electrochemical lithium storage performance when used as LIBs anode. Under a facile hydrothermal condition, a-Fe2O3 nanostructures evolve from solid pie-like structure to hollow bowl-like structure and finally a-Fe2O3 nanorings through the regulation of HPO4- derived from ionized Na3PO4.12H2O and Ostwald ripening process. The designed hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure not only has the merits of hollow structure, which can accelerate the diffusion of lithium ions and electrons, but also shows great mechanical strength to disperse stress when compared to solid pie-like and ring-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructures, which would avoid collapse during charge/discharge process. As a result, the as-synthesized hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure displays an initial reversible capacity of 1616 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, an excellent cycling performance with a reversible capacity of 1018 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles and an outstanding rate capability (68.1% capacity retention at current densities from 100 to 2000 mA g-1). This work provides not only a novel hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure with high specific surface area and stable structure as potential electrode materials for energy storage, but also a facile self-templated strategy free of any surfactants and templates for hollow nanostructures. Abstract:Hierarchical SnO2/Fe2O3 hollow spheres are fabricated through the solvothermal method accompanied by a facile solution procedure in the absence of any surfactant. The composition, crystalline structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties of the synthesized product are investigated systematically. The SnO2/Fe2O3 as an anode material in Li-ion batteries demonstrates a better reversible capacity and very good rate capability and cyclic performance compared with pure-phase SnO2 hollow spheres. The greatly enhanced Li-ion storage capability of the SnO2/Fe2O3 hollow spheres is believed to result from the synergy of the two materials, SnO2 and Fe2O3, which provides breathable aggregates for effective buffering of the drastic volume changes during the charge/discharge process. This work reports a promising method for the design and preparation of nanocomposite electrodes for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Carbon coated hollow alpha-Fe2O3 spheres were prepared via a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The appearance and crystalline structure of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology showed that the hollow spheres were composed of well crystallized nanoparticles after the first hydrothermal reaction and subsequent calcinations. A thin carbon film was coated on each Fe2O3 nanoparticles after the second hydrothermal procedure. This carbon coating was probably beneficial to maintain the microstructure of the active material during repeatable lithiation and delithiation. Afterwards, the samples were assembled into half-cells to investigate the electrochemical properties. The electrode delivered relatively high initial discharge/charge capacities of 1291/890 mA h g(-1) at the rate of 0.3 C. The reversible capacity maintained very well in a prolonged 140 cycles. The capacity retention was 89% after 70 cycles, and that was 81% after 140 cycles. This exceptional lithium storage property was probably attributed to the porous and hollow structure which allowed the penetration of electrolyte to the inner of the electrode, the nanoscale Fe2O3 particles which shortened the migration pathway for lithium ion, and the carbon coating which kept the active materials structure intact. The attractive electrochemical performance suggested the carbon coated hollow Fe2O3 spheres would be the potential anode material for future lithium ion battery.

Abstract:Metal oxides, such as SnO2, Fe2O3, CoO, Co3O4, NiO, CuO and MnO2 etc., are promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and safety characteristics. However, the commercial utility of metal oxide anodes has been hindered to date by their poor cycling performance. Recent study shows that metal oxides with hollow nano/microstructures exhibit fascinating performance as anode materials for Li ion batteries. In this review, we first describe the current commonly used synthetic methods to create metal oxide hollow structures, and for each method, we also comment on its advantages and shortages compared with other methods. According to some typical examples and the following theoretical analysis, we show the promising use of hollow metal oxides as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and future developments of metal oxide hollow structures are further discussed.

Abstract:Morphology-controlled Fe3O4/carbon nanocomposites were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction followed by calcination under a nitrogen atmosphere. Flower-like structures, dispersed nanoflakes and hollow,microspheres could be readily obtained by adjusting the concentrations of the reactants. Based on the time-dependent structure evolution, a possible mechanism for the formation of the different morphologies under various conditions was discussed. The lithium storage properties of the different Fe3O4/carbon composites were compared. The flower-like sample shows the best electrochemical performance with the highest specific capacity of 227 mAh/g at a current rate of 5 C while hollow microspheres and dispersed nanoflakes have specific capacities of only 45 and 10 mAh/g, respectively.

Abstract:Nanostructures have received great attention to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries, due to their advantages in dealing with critical issues associated with large volume change, low electrical conductivity, and slow rate of Li+ diffusion. To realize large lithium storage capacity and excellent rate capability of iron oxide electrode. Carbon-modified three-dimensional porous iron oxide was prepared by chemical reaction with in situ formation of templating agent followed by the calcination is reported herein. Benefit from the regulation of the number of pores in the precursor, part of Fe is oxidized to Fe3O4 and part of Fe is peroxidized to Fe2O3, thus forming Fe2O3/Fe3O4 heterostructure during oxidation process. Attributed to its unique structural feature, the 3D Fe2O3/Fe3O4-C heterostructure electrode for the anode of lithium-ion batteries exhibits outstanding rate capability, i.e., 911.4, 797.9, 736.3, 597.8, and 402.6 mAh g−1 at 0.3, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0 A g−1, respectively, and high reversible capacity, i.e., 929.1 mAh g−1 at a low current density of 300 mA g−1.

Morphology Effect on the Electrochemical Performance of NiO Films As Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:NiO films were prepared by chemical bath deposition and electrodeposition method, respectively, using nickel foam as the substrate. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the images showed that their morphologies were distinct. The NiO film prepared by chemical bath deposition was highly porous, while the film prepared by electrodeposition was dense, and both of their thickness was about 1μm. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the porous NiO film prepared by chemical bath deposition exhibited higher coulombic efficiency and weaker polarization and its specific capacity after 50 cycles was 490mAhg−1 at the discharge–charge current density of 0.5Ag−1, and 350mAhg−1 at 1.5Ag−1, higher than the electrodeposited film (230mAhg−1 at 0.5Ag−1, and 170mAhg−1 at 1.5Ag−1). The better electrochemical performances of the film prepared by chemical bath deposition are attributed to its highly porous morphology, which shorted diffusion length of lithium ions, and relaxed the volume change caused by the reaction between NiO and Li+.
Uniform hollow Fe 3 O 4 spheres prepared by template-free solvothermal method as anode material for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Unique hollow Fe3O4 spheres are prepared by a simple template-free solvothermal reaction. In the reaction, ethylene glycol (EG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) serve as the reducing agent and surface stabilizer, respectively. NH4Ac plays the role of the structure-directing agent, which combines with the Ostwald ripening process, resulting in the favored formation of hollow structures. The morphologies and structures are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hollow Fe3O4 spheres exhibit excellent cycling and rate performance as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, delivering reversible specific capacities of 870mAhg−1 even after 50 cycles at 100mAg−1 and 836mAhg−1 at 500mAg−1. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to their hollow nanostructure and excellent structural stability.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of three-dimensionally porous Fe3O4 via template-assisted and subsequent electrochemical deposition methods. When used as anode materials of lithium–ion batteries, the porous Fe3O4 electrodes show better cyclability and enhanced rate capabilities compared to planar Fe3O4 electrodes. The superior performance can be attributed to improved electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the porous electrodes. The effect of the thickness of the porous Fe3O4 electrodes on the lithium–ion battery performance has also been investigated.

Abstract:Fe2O3 becomes a prospective anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) benefiting from its inexpensive, abundant reserves, environmental friendliness and particularly high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, the low electron/ion conductivity and severe volume expansion of approximately 200% during charging and discharging retard its practical application. Herein, we elaborately designed a sandwich-structured hybrid of Fe2O3 nanoparticles anchored in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Fe2O3/NCN). Thereinto, NCN can improve the electron/ion conduction ability and avoid the volume variation during cycling. When used as LIBs anode, Fe2O3/NCN possesses excellent electrochemical performance with a discharge specific capacity of 1059 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 500 mA g−1 and even 348 mAh g−1 at 15 A g−1. This work demonstrates a new strategy for designing versatile structures for other advanced LIBs anode materials.

Abstract:Spinel structure ZnFe2O4 were prepared by hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. Investigations on X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the samples are well-crystallized cubic ZnFe2O4 with average nanoparticle size ranging from 30 to 90 nm and nanosphere size in the range of 200 similar to 250 nm composed of around 20 nm nanoparticles with increasing sintered temperature for hydrothermal and solvothermal method, respectively. The ZnFe2O4 samples sintered at 600 degrees C show high lithium-storage capacity and good reversibility. Compared with nanoparticles, ZnFe2O4 nanospheres demonstrate a reversible capacity over 860 mAh g(-1) and good rate capability. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was carried out and decreased warburg impedance was found for nanospheres compared to nanoparticle ZnFe2O4.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow Fe3O4 (H-Fe3O4) microspheres are 'prepared by the controlled thermal decomposition of an iron alkoxide precursor, which is obtained via an ethylene glycol (EG) mediated solvothermal reaction of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O), sodium acetate (NaAc), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The microspheres are characterized by the assembly of highly oriented primary nanoparticles and have a single-crystal feature. As the anode materials for the lithium-ion batteries, the resultant H-Fe3O4 microspheres show high specific capacity and good cycle stability (851.9 mAh g(-1) at 1 C and 750.1 mAh g(-1) at 3 C up to 50 cycles), as well as enhanced rate capability. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the high interfacial contact area between the microspheres and electrolyte, and good accommodation of volume change arising from the synergetic effect of the hierarchical hollow structure. It is suggested that the H-Fe3O4 microsphere synthesized by this method is a promising anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hollow structures are often used to relieve the intrinsic strain on metal oxide electrodes in alkali-ion batteries. Nevertheless, one common drawback is that the large interior space leads to low volumetric energy density and inferior electric conductivity. Here, the von Mises stress distribution on a mesoporous hollow bowl (HB) is simulated via the finite element method, and the vital role of the porous HB structure on strain-relaxation behavior is confirmed. Then, N-doped-C coated mesoporous alpha-Fe2O3 HBs are designed and synthesized using a multistep soft/hard-templating strategy. The material has several advantages: (i) there is space to accommodate strains without sacrificing volumetric energy density, unlike with hollow spheres; (ii) the mesoporous hollow structure shortens ion diffusion lengths and allows for high-rate induced lithiation reactivation; and (iii) the N-doped carbon nanolayer can enhance conductivity. As an anode in lithium-ion batteries, the material exhibits a very high reversible capacity of 1452 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), excellent cycling stability of 1600 cycles (964 mAh g(-1) at 2 A g(-1)), and outstanding rate performance (609 mAh g(-1) at 8 A g(-1)). Notably, the volumetric specific capacity of composite electrode is 42% greater than that of hollow spheres. When used in potassium-ion batteries, the material also shows high capacity and cycle stability.
