Abstract:Graphite has been widely used as an anode material for commercial lithium-ion battery applications because of its excellent stability and low cost. However, graphite-based anodes need to improve the energy storage capacities to meet the increasing power demands of next-generation technologies. Here, we have developed a class of novel and flexible electrode materials that consist of N-doped graphene quantum dots supported by carbon nanotubes grown on carbon cloth (denoted as CC/CNT@N-GQD). Such architecture synergistically combines the advantages of three dimensions/one dimension substrates and zero dimension N-GQDs. It greatly improves the electron/ion transport kinetics of N-GQDs, resulting in attractive electrochemical performance in terms of high reversible capacity and excellent rate capability. Moreover, the annealing temperature plays an important role in the control of N-doping types of CC/CNT@N-GQD. CC/CNT@N-GQD anodes annealed at 500 degrees C have a high content of pyridinic N, exhibiting a very excellent rate capability and cycling stability, as exemplified by a capacity of 2.88 mAh cm(-2) at 4 mA cm(-2) and a reversible capacity of 3.63 mAh cm(-2) after 150 cycles at 0.19 mA cm(-2). Abstract:Silicon (Si) particles were functionalized using carbon dots (CDs) to enhance the interaction between the Si particles and the binders. First, CDs rich in polar groups were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method. Then, CDs were loaded on the Si surface by impregnation to obtain the functionalized Si particles (Si/CDs). The phases and microstructures of the Si/CDs were observed using Fourier-transform infrared reflection, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Si/CDs were used as the active material of the anode for electrochemical performance experiments. The electrochemical performance of the Si/CD electrode was assessed using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and constant current charge and discharge experiment. The electrodes prepared with Si/CDs showed good mechanical structure stability and electrochemical performance. After 150 cycles at 0.2 C, the capacity retention rate of the Si/CD electrode was 64.0%, which is twice as much as that of pure Si electrode under the same test conditions.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.
Ultrathin N‐doped Carbon‐coated TiO2 Coaxial Nanofibers As Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The structural optimization of TiO2 materials has a significance for improving the electrochemical performance since TiO2 suffers from poor electronic conductivity. For this purpose, ultrathin N-doped carbon-coated TiO2 coaxial nanofibers have been designed and synthesized by a facile electrospinning approach. Microstructure analysis indicates that the TiO2 nanofibers can be coated by the ultrathin carbon layers. Electrochemical tests reveal that the rate performance and cycling ability of TiO2@C nanofibers have been enhanced obviously. The TiO2@C6 nanofibers carbonized at 600 degrees C exhibit superior features with a specific discharge capacity of 284 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles. Besides improved rate performance of 117 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 2000 mA g(-1) and excellent cycling stability with only about 0.008% capacity loss per cycle were also obtained in the sample TiO2@C6 after 500 cycles at the current density of 1000 mA g(-1). Such remarkable performance may be ascribed to the unique one-dimensional nanofibers as flexible carbon matrix.

Abstract:N-doped carbon coated TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2@NC) were synthesized through a simple two-step route, in which dopamine was simultaneously utilized as both nitrogen and carbon sources. With TiO2@NC applied in the Na-ion battery (SIB) anodes, the continuous and uniform N-doped carbon layer can not only enhance the electrical conductivity of TiO2 and facilitate the surface pseudocapacitive process, but also serve as a buffer layer to accommodate the volume expansion during the sodiation-desodiation processes. The as-prepared TiO2@NC exhibits excellent electrochemical performance when utilized as the SIB anodes, which delivers a remarkably high reversible capacity of 250.2 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 0.25C (84 mA g(-1)) after 200 cycles and still retains 122.1 mAh g(-1) at 10C (3.35 A g(-1)) even after 3000 cycles accompanied with a 95.3% retention of the maximum capacity, outperforming most of the reported TiO2/C-based composites as SIB anodes. To our best knowledge, the preparation of TiO2@NC with dopamine as both nitrogen and carbon sources and its application in the SIB anodes are reported for the first time. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:TiNb 2 O 7 (TNO) is regarded as a promising anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries due to its good safety, high theoretical capacity, and good structural stability. However, its application is greatly hindered by its intrinsically poor lithium diffusivity and low conductivity. In this work, N-doped carbon-coated interconnected TNO hollow nanospheres (H-TNO@C) are prepared by a template route followed with carbon coating. Benefiting from the unique hybrid nanoarchitecture, shortened lithium-ion diffusion length, enhanced electronic conductivity, and good structural robustness are obtained by the H-TNO@C electrode. Consequently, the H-TNO@C electrode exhibits a larger specific capacity (271 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C), enhanced rate performance (151 mAh g −1 at 10 C), as well as better cycling durability (91.7% capacity retention after 5000 cycles) than those of the bare TNO particles and the TNO hollow spheres electrodes.

Abstract:To address the issues of large volume expansion and low electrical conductivity of ZnO anode nanomaterials during lithium ion battery operation, herein we engineered a rod-like ZnO anode with robust and conductive TiO2 quantum dot (QD)@carbon coating derived from molecular layer deposited titanicone, in which the TiO2 QDs are well confined inside the carbon layer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirm the formation of TiO2 QDs and carbonization of fumaric acid in hybrid films after annealing in H2 atmosphere at 700 °C. Benefiting from a unique protective layer design, the prepared TiO2 QD@carbon@ZnO nanorod (NR) anodes display outstanding cycling performance with a discharge capacity of 1154 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles and 70% capacity retention, along with a high rate capacity of 470 mA h g-1 for 500 cycles at 2 A g-1. Moreover, our work demonstrates an innovative and promising approach toward a robust and conductive metal oxide QD@carbon nanocomposite layer for electrode materials in the future.

Abstract:The facile fabrication of core‐shell Se‐doped TiO2@carbon nanotubes using Se/C nanowires as templates via solvothermal method and proper annealing is demonstrated. When used as an anode for sodium‐ion batteries, the TiO2 electrode with simultaneous Se‐doping and carbon hybridization display high specific capacity and excellent cycle/rate capabilities, owing to the enhanced ion diffusion coefficient, electronic conductivity, and reaction kinetics. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been considered as a promising anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), because of its abundance, safety and eco‐friendliness. However, the inferior electronic conductivity and low sodium ion diffusion rate of TiO2 hinder its improvement of electrochemical performance. To overcome these drawbacks, herein, core‐shell Se‐doped TiO2@carbon nanotubes (denoted as Se‐TiO2@CNTs) are successfully designed and fabricated, in which the TiO2 nanoparticle aggregated shells are conformally coated on the carbon nanotubes, while the metallic Se species are physically confined within the meso/micropores. When examined as a SIB anode, the Se‐TiO2@CNTs electrode demonstrates excellent sodium storage performance, correspondingly delivering high reversible capacities of 222.7/208.5 mA h g−1 after 200/1000 cycles at current densities of 0.2/1.0 A g−1, and even a capacity of 140.2 mA h g−1 after 4500 cycles at a high‐rate of 5.0 A g−1. The high reversible capacity, long‐term cycling stability, and high‐rate capability of the Se‐TiO2@CNTs can be owing to the unique structure characteristics, as the hollow/porous structure with high specific surface area of 335.4 m2 g−1 efficiently shortens the Na+ diffusion length and facilitates the electrolyte penetration, while Se‐doping and carbon supporting greatly enhance the electronic conductivity of the Se‐TiO2@CNTs electrode.

Ti-Doped Ultra-Small CoO Nanoparticles Embedded in an Octahedral Carbon Matrix with Enhanced Lithium and Sodium Storage

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of ultra-small Ti-doped CoO nanoparticles, embedded in an octahedral carbon matrix, (Ti-doped-CoO@C) by pyrolyzing a Co-Ti-bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF). The results reveal that optimal pyrolysis resulted in the uniform distribution of the CoO nanoparticles (similar to 10 nm) in an octahedral carbon matrix. Ti-doping enhanced the specific surface area of the as-synthesized Ti-doped-CoO@C nanocomposite. Owing to the octahedral carbon matrix and Ti-doping, the nanocomposite exhibits excellent electrical conductivity and abundant accessible active sites. It is worth noting that the carbon matrix sustains the volumetric changes and the homogenous mesoporous structure facilitates rapid mass transport and electron transfer during the charge/discharge process. Therefore, the as-synthesized Ti-doped-CoO@C nanocomposites exhibited excellent charge storage properties as an anode material in Li- and Na-ion batteries. In Li-ion batteries, the as-synthesized Ti-doped-CoO@C nanocomposites delivered a specific capacity of 1108 mAh g(-1) after 150 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g(-1) and total capacitive contribution reached up to 86.6%, at the scan rate of 0.5 mV s(-1). In Na ion batteries, the Ti-doped-CoO@C nanocomposites demonstrated a stable specific capacity of 285 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles, at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) and total capacitive contribution reached up to 78.4%, at the scan rate of 0.5 mV s(-1). Furthermore, excellent rate performance and efficient charge transfer behavior have been exhibited by the Ti-doped-CoO@C nanocomposites. The present study provides a generic approach to synthesize MOF-derived heteroatom-doped metal-oxide/carbon nanocomposites for a wide range of applications.
Encapsulation of N-doped carbon layer via in situ dopamine polymerization endows nanostructured NaTi2(PO4)3 with superior lithium storage performance

Abstract:NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP) anode with NASICON structure presents broad prospects for aqueous lithium ion battery. Nevertheless, its intrinsic poor conductivity and structure stability in aqueous solution restrict performance of materials. Herein, we used dopamine hydrochloride to fabricate N-doped carbon encapsulated NaTi2(PO4)3 nanosphere via in situ dopamine polymerization under different solution environments. Composites show obvious improvement on electrochemical performance compared with NTP. Additionally, utilization of Tris-buffer solution endows N-doped carbon encapsulated NaTi2(PO4)3 nanosphere with superior performance to those of composites acquired in other solution environments. Among all samples obtained in Tris-buffer, N-doped carbon encapsulated NaTi2(PO4)3 nanosphere with proper carbon layer shows superb electrochemical performance with discharge capacities of 127.5, 113.8, and 90.9 mA h g−1 at 0.2, 3.0, and 15C, respectively. Superb property may be due to the unique nanosphere structure. Nanospheres with better dispersion can shorten migration path of Li ions. Encapsulation of N-doped carbon layer improves stability in aqueous electrolyte and ameliorates electronic conductivity of materials. N doping enhances hydrophilicity and electronic conductivity, and also forms lots of defects on carbon layer, which contributes to Li ion intercalation/deintercalation. This work reveals that the combination of nanosphere and N-doped carbon layer offers a promising method to raise electrochemical performances of NaTi2(PO4)3.
Nitrogen-doped/carbon-coated 2D TiO2 Scaly clusters as high-performance anode for Lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:TiO2 has been considered as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its low cost and high stability, but its low conductivity has greatly limited its application. In this study, the nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) with a uniform carbon coating was prepared by the solvothermal method. According the XPS results, the nitrogen was successfully doped in the TiO2. The N-doped TiO2 electrode exhibited obviously higher lithium-ion storage performance, of which the discharge capacity was 420 mAh g−1 under the current density 0.1 A g−1. Additionally, the superior long-term cycling stability was also observed with a reversible capacity of 148 mAh g−1 after 3000 cycles under 3 A g−1 current density. The result showed that after the nitrogen doped, the replacing of lattice oxygen with nitrogen can decrease the band-gap width and improve the conductivity of titanium oxide. Meanwhile, the oxygen vacancies on the surface of the material can adsorb a large number of lithium ions and produce significant pseudo-capacitance, thus, effectively increasing the specific capacity of the material. Therefore, the N-doped TiO2 electrode can present obviously higher lithium-ion storage performance.

Abstract:Novel TiO2(B)@carbon composite nanowires were simply prepared by a two-step hydrothermal process with subsequent heat treatment in argon. The nanostructures exhibit the unique feature of having TiO2(B) encapsulated inside and an amorphous carbon layer coating the outside. The unique core/shell structure and chemical composition is likely to lead to perfect performance in many applications. In this paper, the results of Li-ion battery testing are presented to demonstrate the superior cyclic performance and rate capability of the TiO2(B)@carbon nanowires. The composite nanowires exhibit a high reversible capacity of 560 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at the current density of 30 mA g(-1), and excellent cycling stability and rate capability (200 mAh g(-1) when cycled at the current density of 750 mA g(-1)), indicating that the composite is a promising anode candidate for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The synthesis of N-doped carbon materials plays an important role in improving electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries. The synthesis of N-doped carbon materials with special morphology and structure remains a challenge, because it is difficult to achieve both goals simultaneously. Carbon particles composed of N-doped carbon nanotubes have been successfully prepared via a simple method using Ni 2+ salt, melamine-formaldehyde resin microspheres and ethanolamine as the raw materials. The as-synthesized carbon particles possess a stable reversible capacity of 445.5 mAh g −1 at 1 C after 100 cycles. Even at 10 C and 20 C, the reversible capacities could also reach 200.1 and 109.8 mAh g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance of the carbon particles can be attributed to both unique structure and N-doping. The high surface area and long carbon nanotube can provide more active area and facilitate the electron transport. Moreover, N-doping can increase the electrical conductivity and create the defects for carbon materials, which are favorable for Li + adsorption.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted Synthesis of Hierarchical Ti2Nb10O29 Porous Microspheres Coated by Ultrathin N-doped Carbon Layers for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Nanoparticle-assembled Ti2Nb10O29 porous microspheres coated by N-doped carbon layers (TNO@N-C-M) have been synthesized using ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([Emim]DCA) as carbon and nitrogen sources. Owing to the wide liquid range, low vapor pressure, and low surface tension of [Emim]DCA, the as-obtained N-doped carbon layers possess ultrathin thickness (similar to 3 nm) and the primary TNO nanoparticles have ultrasmall sizes (20-30 nm). The synergistic effects from the particular structure lead to high electronic conductivity, fast ion/electron transport kinetics, and increscent pseudocapacitive contribution. Accordingly, the TNO@N-C-M anode has large discharge capacity (309.6, 262.2, 240.6, 216.5 and 204.5 mA h g(-1) at 1, 5, 10, 20, and 30 C, respectively), good rate capacity (304.9 and 208.1 mA h g(-1) at 1 and 30 C, respectively), and superior cycle stability (219.5 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles at 10 C). Also, the LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2//TNO@N-C-M full cell also exhibits superior electrochemical properties with promising application prospect.

Abstract:In this work, a novel concept of introducing a local built-in electric field to facilitate lithium-ion transport and storage within interstitial carbon (C-) doped nanoarchitectured Co3O4 electrodes for greatly improved lithium-ion storage properties is demonstrated. The imbalanced charge distribution emerging from the C-dopant can induce a local electric field, to greatly facilitate charge transfer. Via the mechanism of surface locking effect and in situ topotactic conversion, unique sub-10 nm nanocrystal-assembled Co3O4 hollow nanotubes (HNTs) are formed, exhibiting excellent structural stability. The resulting C-doped Co3O4 HNT-based electrodes demonstrate an excellent reversible capacity approximate to 950 mA h g(-1) after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g(-1) and superior rate performance with approximate to 853 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1).

Abstract:Nanostructure designing has been showing great potential in improving the sodium storage performance of nanomaterials. As a promising sodium ion battery anode, the large-scale application of TiO2 are largely restricted by the sluggish Na+ diffusion and its low electronic conductivity. To solve those drawbacks, we design a unique dual carbon coated hollow sphere structured TiO2 (H–2@C). In this unique structure, the outside and inner side dual carbon layers well confine the hollow structured TiO2 in the middle, which greatly improve the electronic conductivity of TiO2 and reduce its structure change during Na+ insertion/extraction process. In addition, the hollow sphere structure with high surface area endows sufficient soaking of the electrolyte, resulting in shortened ion diffusion path way and facilitated ion diffusion kinetics. Owing to those superiorities, the H–2@C delivers a high reversible capacity of 335.4 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1, excellent rate capability and cycling stability when used as an anode in sodium ion battery. This work highlights that specific structure design combined with effective carbon coating is an effective strategy in improving the performance of energy storage materials.
