Abstract:Different mole ratios of TiO2/BiVO4 nanocomposites with effective contacts have are fabricated by putting BiVO4 nanoparticles into the TiO2 sol, followed by thermal treatment at 450 °C. Based on the transient‐state surface photovoltage responses and the atmosphere‐controlled steady‐state surface photovoltage spectra, it is concluded that the photogenerated charge carriers in the TiO2/BiVO4 nanocomposite with a proper mole ratio (5%) display much longer lifetime and higher separation than those in the BiVO4 alone. This is responsible for the unexpected activity for photoelectrochemical oxidation of water, for photocatalytic production of H2, and for photocatalytic degradation of phenol as a model pollutant under visible irradiation. Moreover, it is suggested that the prolonged lifetime and increased separation of photogenerated charges in the fabricated TiO2/BiVO4 nanocomposite is attributed to the unusual spatial transfer of visible‐excited high‐energy electrons of BiVO4 to TiO2. This work will provide feasible routes to synthesize visible‐light responsive nanomaterials for efficient solar utilization.
2D/2D heterostructure of ultrathin BiVO4/Ti3C2 nanosheets for photocatalytic overall Water splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting is a promising environmental friendly technique to convert solar energy into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). Here, BiVO4 ultrathin nanosheets is found to disintegrate pure water into H2 and O2 simultaneously under simulated solar light irradiation without sacrificial reagents. And a novel 2D/2D BiVO4/Ti3C2 composites is successfully synthesized through electrostatic interaction between BiVO4 and Ti3C2 nanosheets. Because the unique 2D/2D heterojunction possesses large interface contact area and quite short charge transport distance, BiVO4/Ti3C2 displays much higher photoexcited carrier transfer and separation efficiency and ultimately exhibits remarkable photocatalytic overall water splitting activity. This work may provide the first experimental confirmation of ultrathin BiVO4 nanosheets with an ability of photocatalytic overall water splitting, and the 2D/2D combination between BiVO4 and Ti3C2 is an effective way for further improving the activity, which may provide guidance for designing efficient water splitting photocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:Developing the low-cost, high performance and stable photoelectrocatalysts with water splitting performance is great important for the future energy supplement. Herein, the TiO2/BiVO4 heterojunction modified by cobalt phosphate (Co-Pi) has been successfully constructed by firstly preparing TiO2 nanopillar by the solvothermal method, followed by coupling BiVO4 films via sol-gel method and finally, the formed heterojunction is decorated with Co-Pi nanoparticles. On account of the better visible-light response, suitable band structure design and faster hole transfer effect from Co-Pi, the obtained TiO2/BiVO4/Co-Pi nanocomposite exhibits excellent activity and stability of photoelectrochemical (PEC) property, achieving a photocurrent density of 2.36 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte, which is nine times as high as that of pure TiO2 photoanode, and possessing the best photo-corrosion resistance. Compared with the initial transient current, the photocurrent of TiO2/BiVO4/Co-Pi photoanode decreases by 25% in a steady state at 3600s, which has a better electrochemical stability, in contrast to 33% drop of TiO2/BiVO4 and 50% drop of TiO2. This route is promising as a simple method to expand the optical response range and improve the performance of PEC system effectively, also providing a guidance to construct other advanced photoelectron-catalysts for energy conversion and utilization. Integrating Bi2MoO6 Nanoflakes into TiO2 Photoanode for Efficient Charge Separation in Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Achieving highly effective water splitting based on conventional TiO2 photoanode is challenging due to its poor visible light response and low electrical conductivity. Herein, a Bi2MoO6/TiO2 heterojunction with a suitable band structure is constructed to broaden light absorption and accelerate oxidation kinetics. In particular, the highest photocurrent density (0.35 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 is 2.1 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. The integrated Bi2MoO6 nanoflakes enrich more reactive sites and charge transfer tunnels. The surface hole injection efficiency and electron lifetime of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 are 1.4 and 5.5 times larger than those of bare TiO2, respectively. Additionally, the activation energy and charge transfer resistance of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 electrodes are decreased remarkably, dramatically promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs. This work offers a novel strategy for TiO2-based heterojunction with great potential for application in photoelectrochemical water splitting.
A Highly Efficient Nanoporous BiVO4 Photoelectrode with Enhanced Interface Charge Transfer Co-catalyzed by Molecular Catalyst

Abstract:A highly efficient nanoporous non-doped BiVO4 photoelectrode with high photocurrent and low onset potential for photoelectrochemical water splitting was achieved by using molecular catalyst and amorphous TiO2 stabilization layer. This BiVO4 photoelectrode co-catalyzed by molecular catalyst of Ir-COOH exhibits the photo electrochemical performance comparable to the limitation values obtained in Na2SO3 sacrifice agent. Interestingly, the BiVO4/Ir-COOH exhibits more efficient interface charge transfer than BiVO4/IrOx as measured by intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS) although the Ir-COOH molecular catalyst shows much lower electrochemically catalytic activities than the state-of-the-art IrOx, nanoparticles for water splitting. The Ir-COOH/BiVO4 was further stabilized by double amorphous TiO2 layers with little impact on charge transfer. In all, it is promising to achieve high efficiency water splitting by using molecular catalysts to co-catalyze nanostructure photoelectrodes with short diffusion length and such system can be stabilized by amorphous TiO2 layer.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting Via Mof-Derived Tetragonal Bivo4-Based Solid Solution

Abstract:In this work, BiVO4-based solid solutions, Bi0.5Y0.5VO4, were prepared via the MOF-derived method initially. The physical and chemical properties of the Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 samples were characterized by XRD, Raman spectra, XPS, HRTEM, element mapping, UV-vis DRS spectrum, TRPL and electrochemical analysis. The results showed that Y sources will be beneficial for the generation of tetragonal phase BiVO4, which made Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 samples constructed by tetragonal Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 and amorphous Bi0.5Y0.5VO4. The ratio of the tetragonal Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 was changed if the variation of the calcined time increased, which could be ascribed to the conversion of the amorphous Bi0.5Y0.5VO4. Consequently, photocatalytic overall water splitting property was enhanced and the results exhibited that Bi0.5Y0.5VO4-10 h samples exhibited the best performance with a rate of 124.2 mu mol H-2 and 61.7 mu mol O-2 per hour. The reason could be attributed to the variation of twisting degree, which thus influencing the internal electric field of the materials. More importantly, after metallic Pt particles as co-catalysts deposited, the ratio of H-2:O-2 was decreased. It could be proposed that the electric field shield effect will emerge to regulate the interfacial internal electric field further, which could play an essential role in the procedure of photocatalytic water splitting, especially for the reduction procedure.

Abstract:There is an enormous demand to develop novel TiO2-based photocatalytic material with higher photocatalytic activity due to its great performance in wastewater treatment. However, the exaggerated band gap of 3.2 eV for TiO2, which only absorbs the energy in the UV region, limits its application in wastewater treatment. In recent years, BiVO4 as a photocatalytic material has drawn considerable attention because of its appropriate ban gap of ~ 2.4 eV that allows a strong absorption in visible light region, excellent intrinsic charge transport properties, and suitable band location for recombination with other photocatalysts. In this paper, BiVO4@TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates via hydrothermal method, the structure and morphology of NRAs were observed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, and the surface element and valence states were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To confirm the improvement of photocatalytic performance after loading BiVO4 particles, methylene blue degradation test for before and after loading BiVO4 particle samples was carried out. The result indicates that the BiVO4@TiO2 NRAs sample shows a better degradation property than the single one, and the optimal parameter is 10 h with the concentration of 0.2 M. The capacity of photon carrier generation and electron–hole pairs migration was also investigated via UV–Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectra. The result illustrates that the absorption region is broadened by loading BiVO4 and the recombination of carriers is restrained efficiently, attributing to the transfer between TiO2 and BiVO4.
Enhanced Charge Separation and Transfer by BiVO 4 Heterojunction and N-Doped for TiO 2 Nanotubes during Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen evolution by a TiO2 photoanode is a promising strategy for clean energy generation. The BiVO4 decorated N-Doped TiO2 nanotubes (BiVO4/TiO2–N) were synthesized by the anodization and hydrothermal procedure. The physical and chemical characterization indicates that the BiVO4 nanoparticles are successfully decorated on the surface of the TiO2–N nanotubes (∼600 nm) to form the heterojunction structure. After the nitrogen doping and BiVO4 modification of TiO2, the UV–visible light absorption ability is broadened, the band gap energy shifts from 3.2 to around 2.82 eV, and the injection and separation efficiency of charge carriers is increased. Nitrogen doping and BiVO4 modification have little effect on TiO2 crystallization. The optimal photocurrent density of BiVO4/TiO2–N reached 1.02 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is about 1.76-fold more than that of the TiO2 photoanodes. The mechanism studies for BiVO4/TiO2–N indicate that the key factors for boosting PEC performance are the light absorption and the charge separation enhancement by the N-doping and the n–n heterojunction by BiVO4 with the TiO2 photoanode. The mechanism for the BiVO4/TiO2–N photoanode during the PEC water splitting process is proposed for further understanding and designation.

Abstract:Recent advances in solar water splitting by using BiVO4 as a photoanode have greatly optimized charge carrier and reaction dynamics, but relatively wide bandgap and poor photostability are still bottlenecks. Here, an excellent photoanode of black BiVO4@amorphous TiO2-x to tackle both problems is reported. Its applied bias photon-to-current efficiency for solar water splitting is up to 2.5%, which is a new record for a single oxide photon absorber. This unique core-shell structure is fabricated by coating amorphous TiO2 on nanoporous BiVO4 with the aid of atomic layer deposition and further hydrogen plasma treatment at room temperature. The black BiVO4 with moderate oxygen vacancies reveals a bandgap reduction of approximate to 0.3 eV and significantly enhances solar utilization, charge transport and separation simultaneously, compared with conventional BiVO4. The amorphous layer of TiO2-x acts as both oxygen-evolution catalyst and protection layer, which suppresses anodic photocorrosion to stabilize black BiVO4. This configuration of black BiVO4@amorphous TiO2-x may provide an effective strategy to prompt solar water splitting toward practical applications.

Abstract:BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by a facile wet-chemical process, followed by the synthesis of TiO2 hierarchical spheres via hydrothermal method. The BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that prepared TiO2 presented hierarchical spherical morphology self-assembled by nanoparticles and an anatase–brookite mixed crystal phase. The introduction of monoclinic BiVO4 components retained the hierarchical structures and expanded the light response to around 510 nm. Type II BiVO4/TiO2 heterostructured nanocomposites exhibited improved photocatalytic degradation towards methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, especially for the composite photocatalysts with atomic Ti/Bi = 10, which showed double degradation rate than that of pure BiVO4. The enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of the heterostructured BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites was discussed as well.
High-performance and stable BiVO4 photoanodes for solar water splitting via phosphorus-oxygen bonded FeNi catalysts

Abstract:Solar-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising technique for solar energy conversion, while its practical application is currently hampered by the sluggish oxygen evolution kinetics. Herein, we report that phosphorus-oxygen bonded FeNi catalysts and BiVO4 photoanodes could significantly promote the PEC water oxidation activity and stability. More specifically, a record photocurrent density of 6.73 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), AM 1.5 G) has been achieved, accompanied with an outstanding long-term durability. The detailed experimental and analysis results clearly reveal that the incorporation of P-O interfacial bonds leads to the electron density redistribution and strong electronic coupling between FeNi catalysts and BiVO4 photoanodes. More specifically, such interfacial feature not only promotes the electron transfer from Bi sites to Fe atoms for significantly enhancing PEC activity, but also facilitates the electron injection from Ni atoms to the V site for stabilizing V atom in BiVO4 lattice to guarantee structural stability. This work provides a new insight for designing highly efficient photoanodes for solar water splitting applications.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ), a widely utilized photoanode material, encounters limitations in its application due to sluggish water oxidation kinetics. In this study, a titanium-doped, NiFeO x -modified BiVO 4 photoanode (Ti–BiVO 4 /NiFeO x ) was developed using electrodeposition and solution immersion method. As-prepared photoanode demonstrates significantly enhanced photocurrent density, achieving 5.4 mA cm - 2 at 1.23 V RHE , which is threefold than that of the pristine BiVO 4 photoanode. Additionally, it exhibits excellent long-term photo stability. The incorporation of titanium can modulate the bandgap of BiVO 4 , and the co-catalytic modification with NiFeO x can promote surface charge transfer, thereby enhancing the water oxidation kinetics. The Mott-Schottky analysis reveals a higher carrier density for Ti–BiVO 4 /NiFeO x . Computational findings further illustrate that the Ti–BiVO 4 /NiFeO x photoanode boasts an 86.58% surface charge transfer efficiency at 1.23 V RHE , substantially surpassing the unmodified BiVO 4 photoanode (43.63%). Consequently, the combined strategies of bandgap control and interface engineering effectively enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO 4 photoanodes, presenting a promising pathway for water splitting applications.

Abstract:A novel wide spectrum responsive BiVO4-TiO2 junction composite photoanode has been successfully synthesized by a simple, solution-based metal-organic decomposition (MOD) method. The photocurrent was increased by similar to 4 times using the junction with respect to bare BiVO4 under 100 mW cm(-2) illumination, resulting in similar to 5-fold enhancement in IPCE at 400 nm which is nearly double the value reported recently. These enhancements in both IPCE and stability are due to the ultrafine film structure and more importantly, facile rectifying electron transfer across the junction.

Abstract:A minimalist approach to fabricate the synthetic composite Ti/TiO2/BiVO4 was proposed. Concurrently, the photoelectrocatalytic performance and activity of the Ti/TiO2/BiVO4 electrode were evaluated. Specifically, the relationship between composition, morphology, and photocurrent response was initially discussed. Then, the transient photocurrent, linear sweep voltammetry, photoconversion efficiency, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to test the photoelectrochemical performance. To evaluate the photoelectrocatalytic activity of this composite electrode, rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under optimized experimental conditions was selected as a typical case study. Compared with other similar electrodes, the present electrode had a short preparation time, excellent photocurrent response, high RhB removal, and high stability. Based on the measurements of trapping experiments, Mott − Schottky spectroscopy (M − S), UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–Vis DRS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and degradation intermediate products, a possible photoelectrocatalytic degradation mechanism of Ti/TiO2/BiVO4 was proposed. According to our results, ·O2− should be the dominant oxidative species. The Z-scheme heterojunction of Ti/TiO2/BiVO4 has a new microstructure with potential in wastewater treatment.
Ordered Ti-doped FeVO4 nanoblock photoanode with improved charge properties for efficient solar water splitting

Abstract:Highly photoactive FeVO4 photoanodes with ordered nanoblock morphology and uniform Ti-doping were prepared by drop-casting mixed Ti and V precursors onto FeOOH nanorod films and following an annealing process. The results indicate that Ti4+ is uniformly doped into the FeVO4 lattice by substituting V5+ and provides an increased number of O2- vacancies. The optimized film thickness and doping level are 620 nm and 0.3%, respectively. Compared to the undoped sample, the Ti-doped photoanode showed ∼219% enhancement in photocurrent at 1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl under back illumination of AM 1.5, reaching a state-of-the-art value of ∼1.47 mA cm-2, and also achieved stable and efficient overall water splitting activity with evolution rates of 28.3 and 14.1 μmol cm-2 h-1 for H2 and O2, respectively. The excellent PEC performance could be attributed to the remarkably enhanced charge carrier concentration and conductivity, and the facilitated charge transfer kinetics across the semiconductor/electrolyte interface, as a result of Ti-doping.

Abstract:Phosphate modified nanocrystalline TiO2 (nc-TiO2) films were prepared by a doctor blade method, followed by post-treatment with monometallic sodium orthophosphate solution. The dynamic processes of the photogenerated charges from the resulting nc-TiO2 films were thoroughly investigated by means of transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). It is shown that photogenerated holes in the un-modified TiO2 film exhibit the same dynamic decay process as its photogenerated electrons, in oxygen-free water of pH 7. However, photogenerated holes in the phosphate modified film display a slightly faster dynamic decay process than its photogenerated electrons, and photogenerated charges of the modified film have a much longer lifetime than those of the un-modified film. These differences are attributed to the surface-carried negative charges of nc-TiO2 resulting from the phosphate groups (–Ti–O–P–O−). Interestingly, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) experiments show that modification with an appropriate amount of phosphate could improve the photocurrent density of the nc-TiO2 film electrode by about 2 times, at a voltage of 0 V in the neutral electrolyte. Based on the TAS and PEC measurements of un-modified and phosphate modified nc-TiO2 films, with different conditions, it is suggested that the prolonged lifetime of photogenerated charges can be attributed to the negative electrostatic field formed in the surface layers. It is also responsible for the increase in activity for PEC water splitting and for the reported photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. The suggested mechanism would be applicable to other oxide semiconductor photocatalysts and to modification with other inorganic anions.
Enhanced Twisting Degree Assisted Overall Water Splitting on a Novel Nano-Dodecahedron BiVO4-based Heterojunction

Abstract:A novel nano-dodecahedron Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 solid solution with a diameter ranging from 20 to 50 nm has been prepared initially. The sample was characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, element mapping, XPS, UV vis spectrum, Raman spectra, Mott-Schottky and XPS valence band analysis to reveal its properties. Photocatalytic experiment exhibited that H-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 exhibited a much superior activity than the P-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 among overall water splitting. The enhanced twisting degree in hetero-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4 (H-Bi0.5Y0.5VO4), which reconstructed the internal electric field and thus promoting the photogenerated carriers migrating directionally to form the direct Z-scheme heterojunction, should be responsible for the improvement of the photocatalytic performances. Furthermore, it also contributed to the morphology edge formation, which could be another critical factor for improving the photocarriers separation efficiency after simulating the rules of charge distribution. Additionally, results also indicated that the co-catalysts Rh@Rh2O3 could unlock a new charge transfer channel in the procedure of photocatalytic overall water splitting.

Abstract:BiVO4 stands out among many semiconductor photoanodes because of its appropriate band gap and high valence band value, and is widely used in the field of photo (electro) catalytic water decomposition. However, its low photocurrent density due to its low carrier mobility and short hole distance hinders its application and development. Therefore, we prepared a new type of CoFeOOH/Mo-BiVO4 photoanode, which increased the carrier density by doping Mo element in BiVO4 and then deposited CoFeOOH co-catalyst on the surface of Mo-BiVO4 in room temperature chemical bath, which accelerated charge separation and inhibited electron-hole recombination as a passivation layer. The results show that the prepared composite photoanode has a high photocurrent density (2.45 mA·cm−2), and the initial potential of oxygen evolution has also shifted negatively by 430 mV. This study provides a new idea for photoanode in doping and co-catalyst.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting in a pH-neutral electrolyte has attracted more and more attention in the field of sustainable energy. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a highly promising photoanode material for PEC water splitting. Additionally, cobaltous phosphate (CoPi) is a material that can be synthesized from Earth's rich materials and operates stably in pH-neutral conditions. Herein, we propose a strategy to enhance the charge transport ability and improve PEC performance by electrodepositing the in situ synthesis of a CoPi layer on the BiVO4. With the CoPi co-catalyst, the water oxidation reaction can be accelerated and charge recombination centers are effectively passivated on BiVO4. The BiVO4/CoPi photoanode shows a significantly enhanced photocurrent density (Jph) and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE), which are 1.8 and 3.2 times higher than those of a single BiVO4 layer, respectively. Finally, the FTO/BiVO4/CoPi photoanode displays a photocurrent density of 1.39 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE, an onset potential (Von) of 0.30 VRHE, and an ABPE of 0.45%, paving a potential path for future hydrogen evolution by solar-driven water splitting.
