Abstract:Columbite Zn 0.8 Co 0.2 Nb 2 O 6 crystals were grown by optical floating zone methods. The x-ray diffraction（XRD） was used to check the structure information of the grown Zn 0.8 Co 0.2 Nb 2 O 6 crystal. The room temperature and temperature-dependent Raman spectra were tested to investigate the optical phonon behaviors of columbite Zn 0.8 Co 0.2 Nb 2 O 6 , which exhibited a temperature stable property. The magnetics properties of Zn 0.8 Co 0.2 Nb 2 O 6 , measured by a physical property measurement system（PPMS）, were also presented in this work.

Abstract:Multiphonon resonant Raman scattering in N-doped ZnO films was studied, and an enhancement of the resonant Raman scattering process as well as longitudinal optical (LO) phonon overtones up to the sixth order were observed at room temperature. The resonant Raman scattering intensity of the 1LO phonon in N-doped ZnO appears three times as strong as that of undoped ZnO, which mainly arises from the defect-induced Raman scattering caused by N-doping. The nature of the 1LO phonon at 578 cm(-1) is interpreted as a quasimode with mixed A(1) and E-1 symmetry because of the defects formed in the ZnO lattice. In addition, the previously neglected impurity-induced two-LO-phonon scattering process was clearly observed in N-doped ZnO. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A combination of studies on photoluminescence and resonant Raman scattering in N-doped ZnO thin films were carried out at room temperature. In the photoluminescence spectra, a transformation of radiative recombination mechanism from free-exciton to donor–acceptor-pair transition was observed. An enhancement of resonant Raman scattering processes as well as longitudinal optical (LO) phonon overtones up to the sixth order were observed in the Raman spectra. Also, the nature of the 1LO phonon underwent a transformation from a pure A1(LO) mode to a quasimode with mixed A1 and E1 symmetry. The underlying mechanisms accounting for the influences of N doping on the optical properties of ZnO were related to the incorporation of extrinsic defects in the crystal lattice.

Abstract:We report Raman scattering results for high-quality wurtzite ZnS nanobelts (NBs) grown by chemical vapor deposition. In the Raman spectrum, the ensembles of ZnS NBs exhibit first order phonon modes at 274 cm(-1) and 350 cm(-1), corresponding to A(1)/E-1 transverse optical and A(1)/E-1 longitudinal optical phonons, in addition to a strong surface optical (SO) phonon mode at 329 cm(-1). The existence of the SO band is confirmed by its shift with different surrounding dielectric media. Polarization dependent Raman spectra were recorded on a single ZnS NB and for the first time a SO phonon band has been detected on a single nanobelt. Different selection rules for the SO phonon mode are shown from their corresponding E-1/A(1) phonon modes, and were attributed to the breaking of anisotropic translational symmetry on the NB surface.

Abstract:Nb-Rich non-stoichiometric Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)1−xNbxO3 (BZNN) (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) ceramics were synthesized using solid-state reaction method. Crystal structures and morphologies were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy methods. Vibrational modes were obtained by both Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform far-infrared reflection (FTIR) spectroscopy. The relationship among crystal structures, dielectric properties, and phonon modes were analyzed in detail. XRD results showed that the main phase of BZNN is Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3, and the cell volume and lattice parameter reach a minimum value where x = 0.02. The Raman results displayed that two new modes appeared at about 200 cm− 1 where x > 0.01, which showed that structures of BZNN transform from 1:1 to 1:2 ordering with increasing Nb contents. FTIR results demonstrated that great changes took place for the shape of the bands below 180 cm−1. The FTIR spectra were subjected to the Kramers–Krönig analysis.

Raman studies on Ni-doped ZnO powders

Abstract:Raman spectrum is performed to study the phonon modes of Ni-doped ZnO powders. The phonon mode of undoped ZnO and two additional modes (AMs) have been observed in the Raman spectra of doped swatch. The observation of E2 (h) phonon mode in the samples indicates that the doped ZnO powders still keep the hexagonal structure. The AM at 652 cm-1 is ascribed as local vibrational mode due to the host defects. In order to identify the origin of the AM at 544 cm-1, Raman spectrums of the Ni-, Co-, and Mn-doped ZnO powders have been carried out respectively. The results show that the AM at 544 cm-1 is related to Ni impurity. Origins of other phonon modes in the spectra are discussed as well. The multi-LO phonons scattering observed by an exciting source of 325 nm on Ni-doped ZnO powders is reported.

Abstract:A high-quality Zn2TiO4 crystal was used as a prototype for determination of the optical interband transitions by measuring the absorption spectrum of the crystal along the a-axes at room temperature in the range of 200-1000 nm. Based on the theory of band-to-band transitions, the indirect energy gap and the phonon energy were determined as E-gi = 3.29 eV and E-p = 0.09 eV, respectively. Abstract:Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is one of the simplest representatives of the lead ferroelectric relaxors. Its solid solution with PbTiO$_{3}$, at concentrations near the morphotropic phase boundary, is especially important. In this paper, we apply the tested earlier on Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ approach, to analyze the light scattering from both, nominally pure Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3} $)O$_{3}$ crystal and a crystal containing 4.5% of PbTiO$_{3}$, measured in a broad temperature range from 1000 to 100 K. We propose a comprehensive picture of the temperature evolution of the lattice dynamics in these crystals and associated structural transformations. We show, that in PZN, like in PMN, short-lived dynamic lattice distortions exist even at the highest measured temperatures. With cooling down, these distortions develop in Fm$\bar{3}$m clusters and R3m polar nanoregions that are still capable of reorientational motion. From the Burns temperature T$_{d}$, this motion becomes progressively restricted. The freezing process starts at the temperature T$^{*}$ and continues down to T$_{d0}$. The major Raman lines in all these materials behave very similarly. However, the temperature behavior of a weak line E in each case is essentially different. Its splitting can serve as a measure of the order parameter of the system.

Polar Optical Phonon States and Dispersive Spectra of Wurtzite ZnO Nanocrystals Embedded in Zinc-Blende MgO Matrix

Abstract:Based on the macroscopic dielectric continuum model and Loudon's uniaxial crystal model, the polar optical phonon modes of a quasi-0-dimensional (Q0D) wurtzite spherical nanocrystal embedded in zinc-blende dielectric matrix are derived and studied. It is found that there are two types of polar phonon modes, i.e. interface optical (IO) phonon modes and the quasi-confined (QC) phonon modes coexisting in Q0D wurtzite ZnO nanocrystal embedded in zinc-blende MgO matrix. Via solving Laplace equations under spheroidal and spherical coordinates, the unified and analytical phonon states and dispersive equations of IO and QC modes are derived. Numerical calculations on a wurtzite/zinc-blende ZnO/MgO nanocrystal are performed. The frequency ranges of the IO and QC phonon modes of the ZnO/MgO nanocrystals are analyzed and discussed. It is found that the IO modes only exist in one frequency range, while QC modes may appear in three frequency ranges. The dispersive frequencies of IO and QC modes are the discrete functions of orbital quantum numbers l and azimuthal quantum numbers m. Moreover, a pair of given l and m corresponds to one IO mode, but to more than one branches of QC. The analytical phonon states and dispersive equations obtained here are quite useful for further investigating Raman spectra of phonons and other relative properties of wurtzite/zinc-blende Q0D nanocrystal structures. Abstract:Ferroelectric lead-free KxNa1−xNbO3 (KNN) perovskite, as the representative of the preferred oxides with good dielectric and piezoelectric behaviors, has attracted broad attentions in recent years. Here we systematically investigate the complete process of temperature dependent structural evolution in manganese (Mn)-doped K0.5Na0.5NbO3-LiBiO3 single crystals, presenting the ultrahigh piezoelectric coefficient of about 1050 pC N−1 and the excellent dielectric and ferroelectric performances, by demonstrating phonon thermodynamics associated with all Raman active modes at a wide temperature range of 80–800 K. All-round unpolarized and polarized scattering characteristics reflecting various phonon and structure properties are specified in detail. Symmetry difference, symmetry breaking, and structure rearrangement among the molecular vibrations have been proven to be related to a multiphase coexistence and the discontinuity of first-order phase transition. In comparison with the lattice dynamics, a complete phase transition ordering and the shift of transition point have been observed in KNN-LiBiO3 crystals with the different Mn contents. This work aims at deeply revealing the details of good ferroelectric/dielectric performance, structure, and phonon thermodynamics, as well as understanding the mechanisms of first-order phase transition under the doping manipulation in KNN systems.

Abstract:Raman spectra of (Mn, Co)-codoped ZnO films were investigated as functions of laser line and temperature. It is shown that the Raman shifts for different phonon modes exhibit redshift with temperature increasing, which can be attributed to the anharmonic effect in the material. Strong resonant Raman spectra of multi-LO phonons were observed as well for the films with the exciting photon energy higher than the direct band gap. Compared with the Raman spectra for ZnO films, the Mn, Co codoping effect on the spectra is revealed by the presence of additional phonon modes at 275 and 642cm−1 and another intensive phonon mode at around 524cm−1. With postannealing, Raman intensity of these phonon modes decrease, owing to the incorporation of oxygen into the films. Origins of the different phonon modes in the spectra are discussed as well.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials coupled ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) and ferroelectric ordering in a single phase. Hexagonal YMnO3 is the most studied member of rare earth manganites multiferroic materials, due to its fascinating underlying physics and broad application prospect in magnetic storage media and spintronics. We used Raman spectroscopy to characterize the vibration modes in hexagonal YMnO3 single crystal grown by optical floating-zone method. The Raman spectroscopies were analyzed in detail in the temperature range from 78 to 313 K. A vibration mode (E-2 at 107 cm(-1)) was first discovered experimentally, indicating the high quality of YMnO3 single crystals. The vibration modes of atoms were confirmed by polarized Raman spectrum analysis.

Abstract:The possibility of inducing new polar and/or magnetic transient states through the pumping of optical phonons towards the non-linear regime has renewed the scientific interest in orthoferrites. Nonetheless, to perform these studies it is fundamental to have a deep knowledge of the lattice excitations at equilibrium conditions. In this work, we present a complete characterization of the optically-active zone-center phonons in NdFeO3 single crystals at room temperature by means of polarized Raman and infrared spectroscopies. The study is complemented with polarized infrared spectroscopy at 4 K and unpolarized Raman scattering at 10 K. The predicted polar phonons were successfully observed together with some of the crystal-field excitations. First-principles simulations further allow the eigenmode and symmetry assignments of the optical phonons. The calculated atomic motions of each mode are of significant interest, as they are common for all orthoferrites and to most of the large family of orthorhombic Pbnm perovskites.

Abstract:The double perovskite YBaMn2O6 exhibited complex structural, magnetic, and charge/orbital ordering phase transitions. In this paper, we investigated the correlation between the temperature-dependent optical response and complex phase transitions of YBaMn2O6 single crystals through spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The room temperature optical absorption spectrum of YBaMn2O6 revealed three bands of approximately 1.50, 4.05, and 5.49 eV. The lowest optical absorption band was assigned to on-site d–d transitions in Mn ions, whereas the other two optical features were assigned to charge-transfer transitions between the 2p states of O and 3d states of Mn. The room temperature Raman scattering spectrum revealed 25 phonon modes. Notably, the MnO6 octahedral tilting and bending modes between 360 and 440 cm–1 increased in intensity at temperatures <200 K. Furthermore, several new phonon peaks appeared at temperatures <200 K, which were associated with charge ordering. Additionally, the magnetic order-induced changes were observed in the breathing modes, with reduced intensity of the 620 cm–1 and a substantial enhancement of the 644 cm–1 phonon peaks. The Jahn–Teller mode at approximately 496 cm–1 exhibited strong hardening at temperatures <200 K, which indicated a linear correlation with the square of the magnetic susceptibility and thus revealed the occurrence of spin–phonon coupling. Anomalies in the phonon frequency, line width, and intensity observed near the phase transition temperatures highlighted the importance of lattice–charge–spin interactions in YBaMn2O6.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Growth and inelastic light scattering studies on Sr2Nb2O7 single crystals

Abstract:A crack free and high structural quality Sr2Nb2O7 single crystals were grown by the optical float zone method using optimized growth parameters. Laue pattern confirms single crystalline nature of the grown crystal. Temperature dependent Raman and Brillouin light scattering studies reveal a significant shift in phonon modes across normal to incommensurate phase transition (Tn-in) which occurs ~ 488 K. In the temperature range from 900 down to 500 K, two optical phonon modes about 63 (B1 mode) and 54 cm-1 (A1 mode) were observed. The frequency of A1 mode strongly decreases with an increase in temperature above the Tn-in while the frequency of this mode almost remains constant below the Tn-in. In contrast the frequency of B1 phonon mode is found to increase with temperature in the range of 500 - 900 K but it does not display a significant shift below the phase transition temperature. In addition in the incommensurate phase a new optical phonon mode at 35 cm-1 also begins to appear and exhibits strong stiffening behavior with increase in temperature in the range of 300 - 488 K. Moreover, the anomalous behavior of the acoustic phonon across Tn-in were further probed using Brilliouin scattering. Longitudinal acoustic phonon mode at 41 GHz exhibits strong change in slope near Tn-in. In addition, the transverse acoustic modes at 28.6 and 22.4 GHz also exhibit strong anomalies with minimum in frequency near Tn-in. The inelastic light scattering studies provide valuable information on the phase transition.

Abstract:Sodium niobate (NaNbO3) exhibits most complex sequence of structural phase transitions in perovskite family and therefore provides as excellent model system for understanding the mechanism of structural phase transitions. We report temperature dependence of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon densities of states in sodium niobate. The measurements are carried out in various crystallographic phases of this material at various temperatures from 300 K to 1048 K. The phonon spectra exhibit peaks centered around 19, 37, 51, 70 and 105 meV. Interestingly, the peak around 70 meV shifts significantly towards lower energy with increasing temperature, while the other peaks do not exhibit an appreciable change. The phonon spectra at 783 K show prominent change and become more diffusive as compared to those at 303 K. In order to better analyze these features, we have performed first principles lattice dynamics calculations based on the density functional theory. The computed phonon density of states is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Based on our calculation we are able to assign the characteristic Raman modes in the antiferroelectric phase to the A1g symmetry, which are due to the folding of the T (w=95 cm-1) and delta(w=129 cm-1) points of the cubic Brillouin zone.

Crystal Structure Evolution and Local Symmetry of Perovskite Solid Solution Ba[(Fe1/2Nb1/2)1−xTix]O3 Investigated by Raman Spectra

Abstract:The local crystal structure and phonon modes of Ba[(Fe1/2Nb1/2)1−xTix]O3 solid solutions (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 0.85, 0.9, 0.95) were investigated by Raman spectroscopy in the range of 100–1000 cm− 1 at room temperature. Typical tetragonal structure with C4v symmetry was determined for Ba[(Fe1/2Nb1/2)0.05Ti0.95]O3, which was in accordance with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) result. Similar Raman spectra with broader peaks were observed for x decreasing from 0.95 to 0.80, indicating weakening of the Ti4 + displacement. New features in low-, medium- and high-wavenumber regions were observed in Raman spectra of Ba[(Fe1/2Nb1/2)1−xTix]O3 system with x ≤ 0.6, which could be attributed to the heterogeneous distribution of multiple B-site ions. Most interestingly, two-mode-like behavior was observed in the high-wavenumber region in Raman spectra of Ba(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 and Ba[(Fe1/2Nb1/2)0.8Ti0.2]O3, which was probably caused by very local chemically heterogeneous zones of NbO6 and FeO6. As the existence of the local Nb rich region, slight distortion of octahedron could be expected due to the second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) effect of Nb5 + ion. The local composition fluctuation could play an important role in the unique relaxor-like dielectric characteristics of Ba(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3.

Abstract:The high-entropy niobate (Mg 0.2 Cu 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Nb 2 O 6 with a columbite structure has been synthesized for the first time by a modified solution combustion method followed by high-temperature sintering. According to the diffuse reflectance spectra, the direct band gap is 3.36 eV. The niobate is characterized by the mixed electronic–ionic conductivity (2.5 × 10 –3 S/cm at 750°С) comparable with the conductivity of columbite Mg 0.8 Cu 0.2 Nb 2 O 6 .

Abstract:Resonant Raman spectroscopy studies of (Mn, Co)-codoped ZnO films were carried out using the 325 nm laser as the excitation source. The mixed mode character of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon reveals that the resonant Raman spectra of the films can be used to test the c-axis orientation degree of their crystallite grains. The ratio of integrated Raman intensities between the 2LO to LO changes as a function of annealing temperatures, which reaches maximum at about 800 degrees C and demonstrates the variation of electron-LO phonon coupling in the films. These can provide helpful information for the fabrication of ZnO based functional films and for the development of their future applications. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.
Optical Properties of Layered Cobaltates

Abstract:Layered NaxCoO2 system has generated great interests in the condensed matter community for it realizes a triangular lattice with partially filled strongly correlated electronic states. With change of Na content x, a rich phase diagram was revealed. We present in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on this system and address features specific to different phases in the phase diagram. We find that the optical spectral weight increases monotonously with decreasing x from the band insulator x=1. The evolution suggests against a doped Mott insulator for NaxCoO2 system. For x∼0.5 charge-ordering sample, a small energy gap forms below TMIT. In addition, an electronic resonance develops near 800cm-1 below 100K. We suggest that this feature corresponds to a new transverse plasma mode. For x=0.85 crystal in the A-type antiferromagnetic phase or misfit-layered Bi2Sr2Co2Oy compound, the low temperature reflectance is suppressed at the energy similar to x∼0.5 sample in the charge-ordering state. While for x⩽0.3 compounds, a pseudogap structure similar to underdoped high-Tc cuprates develops at low temperature.
