Abstract:We provide a physical prescription based on interferometry for introducing the total phase of a mixed state undergoing unitary evolution, which has been an elusive concept in the past. We define the parallel transport condition that provides a connection form for obtaining the geometric phase for mixed states. The expression for the geometric phase for mixed state reduces to well known formulas in the pure state case when a system undergoes noncyclic and unitary quantum evolution.

Abstract:Examples of geometric phases abound in many areas of physics. They offer both fundamental insights into many physical phenomena and lead to interesting practical implementations. One of them, as indicated recently, might be an inherently fault-tolerant quantum computation. This, however, requires one to deal with geometric phases in the presence of noise and interactions between different physical subsystems. Despite the wealth of literature on the subject of geometric phases very little is known about this very important case. Here we report the first experimental study of geometric phases for mixed quantum states. We show how different they are from the well-understood, noiseless, pure-state case.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the geometric phase of general mixed states under unitary evolution. Here we analyze both non-degenerate as well as degenerate states. Starting with the non-degenerate case, we show that the usual procedure of subtracting the dynamical phase from the total phase to yield the geometric phase for pure states, does not hold for mixed states. To this end, we furnish an expression for the geometric phase that is gauge invariant. The parallelity conditions are shown to be easily derivable from this expression. We also extend our formalism to states that exhibit degeneracies. Here with the holonomy taking on a non-abelian character, we provide an expression for the geometric phase that is manifestly gauge invariant. As in the case of the non-degenerate case, the form also displays the parallelity conditions clearly. Finally, we furnish explicit examples of the geometric phases for both the non-degenerate as well as degenerate mixed states.

Abstract:Geometric phase of mixed state for three-level open system is defined by establishing in connecting density matrix with nonunit vector ray in a three-dimensional complex Hilbert space. Because the geometric phase depends only on the smooth curve on this space, it is formulated entirely in terms of geometric structures. Under the limiting of pure state, our approach is in agreement with the Berry phase, Pantcharatnam phase, and Aharonov and Anandan phase. We find that, furthermore, the Berry phase of mixed state correlated to population inversions of three-level open system.

Abstract:We consider arbitrary mixed state in unitary evolution and provide a comprehensive description of corresponding geometric phase in which two different points of view prevailing currently can be unified. Introducing an ancillary system and considering the purification of given mixed state, we find that different results of mixed state geometric phase correspond to different choice of the representation of Hilbert space of the ancilla. Moreover we demonstrate that in order to obtain Uhlmann's geometric phase it is not necessary to resort to the unitary evolution of ancilla.

Abstract:Quantum mechanical methods for getting geometric phases for mixed states are analyzed. Parallel transport equations for pure states are generalized to mixed states by which dynamical phases are eliminated. The geometric phases of mixed states are obtained as Pancharatnam phases which are valid also for open cycles. The geometric phases are derived here by SU(2) transformations of mixed thermal states which are different from those used in NMR and neutron interference experiments. While the zeroth order Hamiltonian is given by the interaction of a magnetic moment and constant magnetic field in the z direction, the high order perturbations assumed in the present article are composed of two oscillating magnetic fields in the same z direction. These assumptions lead to a special form of the SU(2) unitary transformation of the mixed thermal states by which results for geometric phase and for interference intensity are derived.

Abstract:A general formalism of time evolution and geometric phase for a system with a dynamical semisimple Lie algebra is presented. The formalism is then used to study an alkali atom in a strong time-dependent magnetic field. The non-adiabatic transition probability among the angular momentum states is also calculated. Finally, explicit expressions for the geometric phase and probability in particular case of a rotating magnetic field are given.

Abstract:Two geometric phases of mixed quantum states, known as the interferometric phase and Uhlmann phase, are generalizations of the Berry phase of pure states. After reviewing the two geometric phases and examining their parallel-transport conditions, we specify a class of cyclic processes that are compatible with both conditions and therefore accumulate both phases through their definitions, respectively. Those processes then facilitate a fair comparison between the two phases. We present exact solutions of two-level and three-level systems to contrast the two phases. While the interferometric phase exhibits finite-temperature transitions only in the three-level system but not the two-level system, the Uhlmann phase shows finite-temperature transitions in both cases. Thus, using the two geometric phases as finite-temperature topological indicators demonstrates the rich physics of topology of mixed states.

Experimental Demonstration of A Unified Framework for Mixed-State Geometric Phases

Abstract:Geometrical phases have been applied in virtually every major branch of physics and they play an important role in topology and knot theory in mathematics and quantum computation. However, most of the early works focus on pure quantum states which are very unrealistic and almost never occur in practice. The two existed definitions -Uhlmann's and Sjöqvist's- would result in different values for the geometric phase in general. The definition of geometric phase in mixed state scenario is still an open question. Here we present a unified framework for both approaches within one and the same formalism based on simple interferometry. We then present experimental results which confirm both approaches to mixed state geometric phase and clearly demonstrate that their unification is possible. Our experiments are furthermore the first such to measure Uhlmann's mixed state geometric phase and show in addition that it is different to the Sjöqvist's phase.

Abstract:A novel approach to geometric phase of mixed state is proposed by using the normalized spinorial representation in connecting the density matrix with mixed state vector. We find that though the spinor involves N separate U(1) phases correspondingly to any N-level decomposition of the density matrix, both geometric phase and density matrix of mixed state are holonomy ⨂k=1NU(1) gauge invariants. This noncyclic invariant is conceptually useful in analyzing geometric phase and CP violation of open system. Under a quasicyclic case, the geometric phase depends only on the symplectic area spanned in a given closed evolving curve with the classical probabilities relating to the Bloch radius, in which quantifies mixed degree of open system, in the Bloch sphere structure.

Abstract:The concept of a geometric phase (Berry's phase) is generalized to the case of noneigenstates, which is applicable to both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. This is particularly important to nonlinear quantum systems, where, due to the lack of the superposition principle, the adiabatic evolution of a general state cannot be described in terms of eigenstates. For linear quantum systems, our new geometric phase reduces to a statistical average of Berry's phases. Our results are demonstrated with a nonlinear two-level model.

Abstract:Geometric phases play a central role in a variety of quantum phenomena, especially in condensed matter physics. Recently, it was shown that this fundamental concept exhibits a connection to quantum phase transitions where the system undergoes a qualitative change in the ground state when a control parameter in its Hamiltonian is varied. Here we report the first experimental study using the geometric phase as a topological test of quantum transitions of the ground state in a Heisenberg XY spin model. Using NMR interferometry, we measure the geometric phase for different adiabatic circuits that do not pass through points of degeneracy.

Abstract:The Weierstrass function approach is applied to investigate the fractal of geometric phase.A noninteracting 4-spin-12 system is considered,of which each spin is driven by a local and rotating magnetic field.A mixed state of this system is constructed.The adiabatic geometric phase for the mixed state is calculated.The mixed state geometric phase is studied under two conditions:① adiabatic approximation;②letting the geometric phases in the mixed state small.The geometric phase for the mixed state becomes an average of the geometric phases of the pure states,weighed by their eigenvalues.The mixed state geometric phase is constructed into the form of Weierstrass function.A novel fractal evolution of the geometric phase is found.The evolution curve of the geometric phase is presented in a special example.The box-counting dimension of the evolution curve of the geometric phase is calculated.

Abstract:Geometric phase is a key player in many areas of quantum science and technology. In this review article, several foundational aspects of quantum geometric phases and their relations to classical geometric phases are outlined. How the Aharonov--Bohm and Sagnac effects fit into this context is then discussed. Moreover, a concise overview of technological applications of the latter, with special emphasis on gravitational sensing, like in gyroscopes and gravitational wave detectors is presented.

Abstract:We study the geometric phase factors underlying the classical and the corresponding quantum dynamics of a driven nonlinear oscillator exhibiting chaotic dynamics. For the classical problem, we compute the geometric phase factors associated with the phase space trajectories using Frenet-Serret formulation. For the corresponding quantum problem, the geometric phase associated with the time evolution of the wave function is computed. Our studies suggest that the classical geometric phase may be related to the the difference in the quantum geometric phases between two neighboring eigenstates.

Abstract:We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, the geometric phase has a pi-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without the RWA given by the hierarchical equations of motion method shows that there is no such phase jump or nodal structure in the geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counterrotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in the multimode Hamiltonian under certain circumstances.

Abstract:Garrison and Wright showed that upon undergoing cyclic quantum evolution a meta-stable state acquires both a geometric phase and a geometric decay probability. This is described by a complex geometric ``phase'' associated with the cyclic evolution of two states and is closely related to the two state formalism developed by Aharonov et al.. Applications of the complex geometric phase to the Born--Oppenheimer approximation and the Aharonov--Bohm effect are considered. A simple experiment based on the optical properties of absorbing birefringent crystals is proposed.
