Abstract:Abstract This essay explores an alternative figuration in Dryden’s thought and writing on the sister arts: face-painting and translation. In this parallel, Dryden conceives of the face as the original text, the face-paint as the translated word, the cosmetician as the translator, and vice versa. To explore the interrelationship of these arts is to reveal the contradictory impulses that shape Dryden’s 1697 Aeneis, reconciling opposing critical views of his translation strategies. In this essay, I survey the prevalent satiric and aesthetic functions of face-painting in Dryden’s writings. I show that in his essays of the 1690s, Dryden’s ambivalent views on cosmetics inform his views on translation: both the original text and the unpainted face are sacred designs that, paradoxically, may still be beautified by the translator’s expression or the cosmetician’s paint. In translation, Dryden is thus caught between the desire to foreground his own paint and the obligation to preserve Virgil’s design. By way of conclusion, I offer a reading of Dryden’s three renderings of the Aeneas and Lausus episode (Aeneid X), in which he liberally daubs and delicately paints upon Virgil’s original. These diverse strategies are poetic manifestations of the conflicting energies that define Dryden’s sister arts, face-painting and translation.

Abstract:Imagery is a familiar aesthetic and admirable object observed by Chinese scholars in both ancient and modern times. As one of the important elements of traditional poetic beauty, imagery analysis has drawn extensive attention in the recent years. By drawing on the findings of the predecessors, collecting and processing lots of existing materials, the author has traced the “Cangwu” imagery back to its ancient source to analyze its developing process and influencing factors, which involves the geographic name of “Cangwu” , the correlative myths and legends, the formation mechanism of “Cangwu” imagery, including its marriage with “Xiaoxiang” theme, its coupling with “Chinese parasol” imagery and its combining with “Cloud” imagery along with its inherently bewildering, sad mood and so on, so as to conjure up the whole thing through observing a part of it.

Abstract:This paper attempts to probe into English translation of fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry via imagery. Classical Chinese poetry is the cream of Chinese culture. It attracts millions of Chinese and western readers with its subtle and profound fuzzy beauty. The ultimate requirement of English translation of classical Chinese poetry lies in transferring its fuzzy beauty. Fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry falls into three categories: fuzzy beauty in form, fuzzy beauty in imagery and fuzzy beauty in artistic conception. Imagery, being the soul of classical Chinese poetry, serves as a communicative and operational medium of transference of fuzzy beauty. The essence of fuzzy beauty consists in "gaps of indeterminacy" which conjures up the reader's unrestrained association. "Gaps of indeterminacy" constitute the "appealing structure" in a text which is subject to the reader's free interpretation according to his own "horizon of expectation". Fuzzy aesthetics sheds light on the aesthetic features of fuzzy beauty, and the hierarchical structure of fuzzy beauty in fuzzy aesthetics corresponds to different layers of fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry. Therefore, both aesthetics of reception and fuzzy aesthetics are of instructive value to English translation of classical Chinese poetry. This paper is composed of five sections. The introductory section is concerned with the significance and purpose of the research. The second section reveals in detail fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry. In the third section, the techniques and principle for translation of poetic fuzzy beauty are put forward in light of aesthetics of reception and fuzzy aesthetics and imagery is recommended as an ideal medium of transference of fuzzy beauty. The fourth section centers on how to transfer fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry using imagery as a medium, analyses and proposals are given from such angles as fuzzy modifiers, syntax, juxtaposition, and cultural influences. A natural conclusion is drawn in the last section.

Abstract:From its inception in the seventeenth century, the Royal Society was no friend to poetry. The advancement of the new science, in the view of its champions, required the subordination of language to empirical observation, the unequivocal homage of inconstant words to the unchanging nature of things in themselves. Poets, needless to say, took a dim view of this development, as they staked their livelihood on the very malleability of language that the empiricists condemned. Satire provided sweet revenge: a team of scholars encountered by Swift’s Gulliver during his visit to the Academy of Lagado make themselves ridiculous by taking Thomas Sprat’s denunciations of figurai language at face value. Rather than risk the ambiguity and semantic slippage attendant on verbal expression, they have dispensed with words altogether and taken to communicating entirely with things, a collection of which they carry about with them in a handy satchel for deployment at academic meetings and cocktail parties.1

Abstract:It seems intuitive to conflate the gamic gaze with the player’s act of looking. To do so, however, would be to inherit from the first wave of psychoanalytic screen theory a misleading presupposition that the gaze is synonymous with the look. Taking influence from new Lacanian film theorists such as Joan Copjec and Todd McGowan, this article contends that the gamic gaze is an object in the visual field of play that disrupts the mastery of the player’s look. I develop this argument through an analysis of the 2017 videogame Gorogoa. By confronting the player with the gaze, Gorogoa reveals that the jouissance (enjoyment) of videogame play consists in the player’s unconscious drive to fail rather than their conscious wish for pleasure or mastery. To borrow terminology from Copjec, the gamic gaze marks the point of the player’s culpability—rather than visibility—in the visual field of play.

Abstract:This paper dwells on the multiple echoes and points of convergence between Atonement and The Turn of the Screw, a text which has been rather overlooked in the teeming intertextuality crisscrossing McEwan’s novel. Thanks to a sophisticated scenography, the English novelist, just like Henry James, explores both the avidity of the eye and the anxiety it faces in front of what turns out to be an in(de)finite object, the ob-scene that shatters the frame of the scene. Structured around dramatic visual encounters that result in a frenzied escalation, the narrative shows how the fierce determination to protect innocence leads to a crime: the English garden becomes the theatre in which the “romance of the nursery” turns to tragedy. McEwan’s novel, very much like James’s tale, explores the fearful and destructive power of a certainty that too easily wipes away the fogs of doubt; it invites us to think of the spectral not as a marginal phenomenon, but, in the line of “the spectral turn”, as what fractures the word and the gaze. In the wake of James’s tale, the ghostly in McEwan involves the person who lives to tell the story, whether she is engaged in vision or in re-vision. At the point where McEwan seems to part company with James and as the long path to atonement begins, the ghosts continue to unsettle the narrative.

Abstract:A large body of Eliot scholarship is dedicated to the question of human sympathy. My essay moves in a different direction, arguing that Eliot saw literature not only as a medium for intersubjective understanding but also as an amplificatory technology, a tool for sensory enhancement. This technology is embodied by the affective dynamics of character in Eliot's final published work, Impressions of Theophrastus Such (1879), a collection of character sketches and philosophical essays composed in conversation with the ancient Greek naturalist and sketch writer Theophrastus of Eresus. In Impressions Eliot invokes the descriptive traditions of natural history and the character sketch to suggest that human beings, like other animals, are conditioned by bodily frameworks and habitual responses that allow them to sense some things and not others. A meditation also on the history of characterization itself, Impressions puts pressure on the modern association of character with individual human psychology.

Abstract:Wordsworth’s romantic approach to poetry manifests itself through a rich array of writing techniques. His reliance on the five senses in his poetic depictions constitutes an aesthetics that swerves from a mimetic representation of reality and embraces reliance on personal experiences and subjective impressions. Among other senses, Wordsworth gives particular attention to the ear. Some important poems of his feature sound and music as stylistic devices illustrating a few theoretical concepts already developed in “Preface to Lyrical Ballads” (1802). In selected passages from The Prelude and “The Solitary Reaper” Wordsworth uses sound and hearing as metaphors for his principle of poetic creation in tranquillity, while in poems like “The Power of Sound” and “The Power of Music” the motive of music distinctively reveals Wordsworth’s differentiation between the poet and the ordinary man as plainly exposed in his “Preface”.

Abstract:The development of garden space at Annensky contributes to an understanding of the individual symbolism of the poet and the principles of organizing semantic unity of the “Trilistniks” (trefoils). In the first trilistniks, the subject occupies an ambivalent position of attraction and repulsion in relation to the garden space (flowers, birds, earth). The intensity of color and smell, as well as the principle of contrast, oxymoron, are important in the description. The garden refers to biblical mythology (“Trefoil of temptation”). Nature is renewed, and man cannot get rid of the burden of the “evil” past and the idea of inevitability of death (“Sentimental trefoil”). Observing the phenomenon of light and shade in the garden, the lyrical “I” thinks about the existence of the world simultaneously outside and inside a man (“Lunar trefoil”). The garden in the “Trefoil of doomness” dedicated to the perception of time is a closed space, “the door is clogged there.” Gardens are gradually growing dim, become flatter, empty and move inside the consciousness of a lyrical subject (sleep, nonsense, fiction). The flowers on the window, the dead garden and the sky are perceived as solid, frozen surfaces (“Ghostlike trefoil”). The image of the garden takes on fantastic features: the old manor is placed in the space of a fairy tale (“Trefoil from the old notebook”), shadows in the garden turn into ghosts of the past and are condensed (“Spring trefoil”). “Trefoil of the loneliness,” the last in the series, is dedicated to the issue of alienation of a modern man from natural world and people, the bright image of the garden (lilacs, sun, bees) is located outside the personal space of the “I.”

Abstract:Regarding "The Daisy follows soft the Sun -" (Fr161), the interpretive energy has been invested upon formulating the love relationship between the daisy and the sun, describing her humbleness, faithfulness, and masochistic attachment, her transformation from subservience to assertiveness or her assertion in disguise of humility. From a combined perspective of Daoism and Ralph Waldo Emerson, this essay argues that this poem features the course of nature, the transcendent moment that gravitates within, and an impersonal love. The poem dramatizes a process of returning to quietude characterized by stillness, darkness, and serenity. The Emersonian vein is clearly evidenced in the daisy's posture of "[Sitting] shyly" at night, returning to solitude, and finding a rest within an edifying sentiment. Abstract:The depiction of eroticism in poetry has a long history, and that of the Shengtang poetry is particularly unique, as it is both extremely beautiful and unconventional, and is not obscene even when scrutinised by men. This article first reviews the origins of the depiction of eroticism and its evolution through the ages, and explores its deeper meaning and artistic potential. By comparing the depictions of fragrance in the poetry of the Sheng Tang and the previous dynasties, it analyses the desire for life and the characteristics of health and youth in the poetry of the Sheng Tang, and explores the unique context of the times that gave rise to this artistic feature. By studying the aesthetic attitudes of the poets of the Sheng Tang period towards the beauty of fragrance and lust, we try to explore and develop a contemporary positive and healthy aesthetic.

Abstract:Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, as an illustration of the “Jazz Age,” has established an outstanding position in the American historical literary circle with its profound social significance and forward-looking warning function. This masterpiece has become an important basis for future generations to explore various of modern issues, including gender ones, which are concerned with the gaze theories. Based on the relevant gaze theories and the text analysis, this paper analyzes the gazes of the three male characters on various aspects of female characters, including physiological, economic, moral and ideological gazes. Through examining the impure gazes affected by social culture, economy and politics in the textual, to some extent this paper provides a refreshing perspective for the study on gaze and gender issues.
