Abstract:To summarize the imaging characteristic of parotid lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) by retrospective analyses of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings for 6 cases of parotid LEC confirmed by operation and pathology and review the relevant literatures.All lesions were located in unilateral parotid.There were single (n =5) and multi-module fusion (n =1).All were located in superficial lobe of parotid gland.And deep lobe (3/6) was involved.An infiltration of casting shape was found along superficial parotid (4/6).There was an irregular margin with small spines,uniform density and signal and above moderate enhancement.An infiltration of casting shape along superficial lobe,uniform density and signal and rich blood supply suggest a diagnosis of LEC.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of parotid malignant tumors and study their pathological basis.METHODS:Forty-seven patients with parotid malignant tumors confirmed by surgery (41 patients) or biopsy (6 patients) were enrolled in this study. A comparative analysis was conducted of the pathological and MRI findings in 30 patients with the entire lesions available. Each of the MRI features was analyzed retrospectively and the typical MRI findings of common parotid malignant tumors were summarized.RESULTS:MRI allowed accurate diagnosis of parotid malignant tumors. Four patients with low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma showed well-defined tumor margin and were difficult to distinguish from benign tumors. Six patients with high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma had obscure margin of the tumor which easily underwent necrosis with liable lymph node involvement. The 8 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma was characterized by extensive invasion surrounding the parotid gland. Most of 8 cases of malignant pleomorphic adenoma still showed high and heterogeneous signal on T2WI, with irregular shape and poorly defined margin. Nine cases of lymphoma all had secondary lesions characterized by extensive involvement and presence of multiple nodules. The 4 cases of acinic cell carcinoma showed either regular or irregular tumor morphology, presenting with high signal intensity on T1WI and T(2)WI.CONCLUSION:MRI is an important modality for the diagnosis of parotid malignant tumors. Most of the common parotid malignant tumors have characteristic MRI and pathological features, which make possible their differential diagnosis.
CT Findings of Basal Cell Adenoma of the Parotid Gland

Abstract:Objective To investigate the CT features of basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland. Methods CT features of basal cell adenoma in four patients who were confirmed by operation and pathology were reviewed retrospectively. The CT images were analyzed by two experienced radiologists with respect to the location, size, margin, morphology, enhancement degree and enhancement pattern. Results The four patients suffered from solitary tumor locating in the superficial lobe abutted on the capsule of the gland. All masses were round in shape, small in diameter and well circumscribed with smooth contours. The tumors in two cases showed cystic areas in the center, with one of them had several gravel calcifications in the mass. All the four tumors showed a moderately increasing-type enhancement, with homogeneous enhancement in two cases and ring-like enhancement in one case. Conclusion Diagnosis of basal cell adenoma of parotid gland should be consider when an old woman has a small single round cystic mass located in the superficial lobe of the gland, with smooth contour and ring-like enhancement.

Abstract:Objective: To discuss the characteristics of parotid gland pleomorphic adenoma in MRI.Methods: The MRI characteristics of 66 cases were studied retrospectively,and correlated with the surgery and pathology findings.The age of 66 cases ranged from 16 to 79,with a mean of 56.8.The ratio of male to female was 0.7:1.Fifty-nine tumors locateel in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland,2 in deep lobe,5 in both superficial and deep lobes.Results: 63 cases showed low signal intensity on T1WI and high intensity on T2WI,and all 66 cases showed a strong homogeneous enhancement after administration of contrast medium.The accuracy of MRI in location and pathology were 98.3% and 95.1% respectively.Conclusion: There were certain MRI characteristics in pleomorphic adenoma.Dynamic MRI is valuable for reference.

Abstract:Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Warthin tumor (WT) are the other two most popular benign parotid gland tumors. BCA is the third most common benign parotid tumors, following WT and PA. The incidence of BCA is far less than parotid PA and WT, but the main clinical presentations of BCA such as slow-growing, asymptomatic painless mass, and well-defined cystic or solid masses are extremely similar to PA or WT. The appropriate treatment is critical for these tumors.

Abstract:BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVEThe pathologic types of parotid tumor are very complicated and the advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosis of these tumors is very obvious; however, there is not still accordance at several areas of MRI diagnosis of them. A large amount of cases are needed for analyzing these MRI features and their pathological fundament. This study was conducted to summarize the MRI manifestations of common benign and malignant tumors and to explore the value of the morphological features of MRI in histological diagnosis of parotid tumor.METHODSThe MRI manifestations for 132 cases(140 lesions) of parotid tumor/lesion were collected, including 89 benign tumors/lesions and 43 malignant tumors. Of them, 112 cases were proved by surgery, 17 cases by biopsy, and 3 cases by clinic observation. MRI features were completely compared with pathological results of surgical samples slice by slice in 58 cases. T(1)WI and T(2)WI sequence were used in MRI unenhancement scan; 108 cases (115 lesions) were examined with both unenhancement and enhancement. Chi-square test was used for statistic analysis.RESULTS(1) The MRI features of common parotid benign tumors were as following: 40 cases of Warthin's tumors enhanced slightly and more than half of them (25 cases) appeared low or equal signal intensity in T(2)WI; 22 cases of pleomorphic adenoma appeared high and unhomogeneous signal intensity in T(2)WI; 5 cases of hemangioma were characterized by their vascular structures which were enlarged than normal; 3 cases of lymphangioma not only appeared specially irregular shape but also surrounded adjacent structures of parotid gland (3 cases). The features of 4 cases of parotid lipoma were same as those in other position of the body.(2) The MRI features of common parotid malignant tumors were as following: 8 cases of malignant pleomorphic adenoma appeared high and unhomogeneous signals in T(2)WI together with irregular shape and ill-defined margin; 7 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma characterized by invasion of very large range surrounding parotid gland. In 8 cases of malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 3 cases showed low-grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinomas, which had well-defined margin and were difficult to distinguish from benign tumor. However, 5 cases of high-grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma showed ill-defined margin, their features were tend to undergo necrosis and invade lymph node; 9 cases of lymphomas were all secondary lesions and there were two characters in their imaging, one was the wide involved range, the other was they consisted of several nodes. The shapes of 3 cases acinic cell carcinoma could be either regular or irregular, the cystic areas could be found in them with high signal intensity both on T(1)WI and T(2)WI.CONCLUSIONThere are certain characters for each of common benign and malignant parotid tumors in MRI and these may be helpful for histological diagnosis in most of them.
Quantitative Analysis and Pathological Basis of Signal Intensity on T2-Weighted MR Images in Benign and Malignant Parotid Tumors.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the value of the signal intensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging using quantitative analysis in the differentiation of parotid tumors.MATERIALS AND METHODS:MR data of 80 pleomorphic adenomas (PAs), 68 Warthin tumors (WTs), and 34 malignant tumors (MTs) confirmed by surgery and histology were retrospectively analyzed. The signal intensities of tumor, normal parotid gland, spinal cord, and buccal subcutaneous fat were measured, and the signal intensity ratios (SIRs) between the tumor and the three references were calculated. Receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal threshold and diagnostic efficiency of SIR for differentiating PAs, WTs, and MTs.RESULTS:The area under the curve (AUC) of tumor to parotid gland SIR (SIRP), tumor to spinal cord SIR (SIRC), and tumor to buccal subcutaneous fat SIR (SIRF) for differentiating PAs and WTs was 0.922, 0.918, and 0.934, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity at an optimal SIR threshold were 86.3% and 91.2%, 80.0% and 97.1%, and 85.0% and 94.1%, respectively. The AUC of SIRP, SIRC, and SIRF for distinguishing PAs from MTs was 0.793, 0.802, and 0.774, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity at an optimal SIR threshold was 86.3% and 61.8%, 80.0% and 73.5%, and 82.5% and 73.5%, respectively. The AUC of SIRP, SIRC, and SIRF for distinguishing WTs from MTs was 0.716, 0.709, and 0.759, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity at an optimal SIR threshold were 61.8% and 82.4%, 55.9% and 82.4%, and 64.7% and 86.8%, respectively.CONCLUSION:SIRP, SIRC, and SIRF on T2-weighted MR images had high diagnostic efficiency for differentiating between PAs and WTs, while SIRP and SIRC for differentiating between PAs and MTs, and SIRF for differentiating between WTs and MTs had relatively high diagnostic efficiency.

Abstract:Purpose To investigate the correlation between sonographic and computed tomography and pathological features of basal cell adenomas (BCAs) of the parotid gland. Methods This retrospective study included 41 patients (43 tumors) with BCAs. The tumors were divided into three types based on their location in the parotid gland and their imaging features. The features of the tumors were analyzed. Results Imaging manifestations and corresponding pathological results of most BCAs of the parotid glands resembled those of benign parotid gland tumors. Malignant transformation occurred in membranous BCAs and in those with extensive cribriform structures. Type-II and type-III tumors accounted for 82.93% of the total proportion. Thirteen tumors showed cystic degeneration with 30.23%, among which type-III tumors could easily develop cystic degeneration. These cystic areas might correspond to cystic degeneration or focal necrosis. Cystic change was not dependent on the tumor size. The pathological features of the tumors were correlated to their imaging manifestations. Conclusion Most BCAs of the parotid glands have imaging manifestations similar to those of benign parotid gland tumors. BCAs with extensive cribriform structures and of the membranous type can show malignant transformation and should be treated with caution in clinical practice.

Abstract:Objective To review CT features of basal cell adenoma in the parotid gland.Methods The clinical records and CT of 22 patients with pathologically confirmed basal cell adenomas in the parotid glands were reviewed.Results The 22 solitary masses were were situated in the superficial (19),both superficial and deep (2),or in the-deep (1) lobes of the parotid glands.The lesions were round (16) or lobulated (6) with well-defined margins.The diameter was 1.1-4.3 cm,with 3 lesions ＞3.0 cm.The mass was uniform in density (5),had cystic change (17),or calcification (2) with solid components isodense relative to muscle.Contrast enhancement ＞40 HU with mild washout in the venous phase was noted in 15 lesions.Progressive enhancement ＜ 40 HU was observed in the remaining 7 lesions.Conclusion CT features of basal cell adenoma in the parotid gland include solitary mass in the superficial lobe with cystic areas,＞40 HU contrast enhancement in the arterial phase,and mild washout in the venous phase.
Diagnostic Efficacy of MRI Characteristic for Parotid Pleomorphic Adenoma

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of an MRI algorithm characteristic of pleomorphic adenoma (PA).Methods MR of 87 cases with parotid gland tumors confirmed by histopathology were analyzed retrospectively.These 87 cases were divided into 2 groups including PA (n =37) and other parotid gland tumor (n =50).Six of the MR imaging features characteristic for PA(lobulated contours,sharp margins,bright T2-signal,T2-dark rim,heterogeneous nodular enhancement,ADC value) of these 2 groups were compared and analyzed.MRI scores of each patient were acquired using a revised MRI algorithm system,which was based on initial scoring system of five "high probability" criteria,and added the scores of the ADC value.We then identified MRI images to test the diagnostic accuracy of the proposed algorithm.Results There were statistical differences in these MR imagingcharacteristic features between the two groups.Twenty-four of 27 cases that met all six "high probability" MRI criteria were consistent with PA on final histopathology.MRI had a specificity of 94.00％ and sensitivity of 64.86％ for PA.The positive predictive value was 88.89％ and the negative predictive value was 78.33％.The overall diagnostic accuracy was 81.64％.Conclusion The revised MRI algorithm characteristic of PA is about 94％ specific for pleomorphic adenoma.A subset of patients with MR imaging that is highly suggestive of PA may reliably avoid further workup.A significant proportion of PAs,however,have indeterminate imaging features that overlap considerably with other benign and malignant lesions.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parotid gland BCA is a rare benign tumor. Only a few studies describing the imaging features of BCA have been published. This study investigated CT and sonography characteristics of BCA of the parotid gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographics of patients with BCA were evaluated, and lesion characteristics of CT (n = 22) and sonography (n = 20) were reviewed. These cases were grouped into 3 types: type 1 tumors, located at the superficial region of superficial lobe of the parotid gland; type 2 tumors, located at the deeper region of superficial lobe; and type 3 tumors, located in the deep lobe. Imaging findings were correlated with pathology. RESULTS: Sixteen patients (73%) were female and 6 (27%) were male. The mean age was 51.5 years (SD 10.2; range 32–73). The size of the tumors was less than 30 mm. The sizes of type 1, type 2, and type 3 tumors were 11.4 ± 3.29 mm, 19.3 ± 5.44 mm, and 26 ± 3.6 mm, respectively. The CT attenuation increase was 64.5 ± 19 HU on contrast CT. The type 1 tumors were solid (11/11), showed homogeneous or slightly heterogeneous enhancement on CT, and were homogeneously or slightly heterogeneously hypoechoic on sonography. Cystic changes tended to occur in type 2 (7/8) or type 3 (2/3) tumors, which showed obvious heterogeneous attenuation on CT and anechoic on sonography. CONCLUSIONS: The BCA tends to be small and shows early intense enhancement. The solid tumor is common in the superficial region of the parotid gland, and cystic lesions occur mostly in the deeper parts of the superficial lobe or in the deep lobe.

Basal Cell Adenoma Of The Parotid Gland: Clinical And Pathological Findings In 29 Cases

Abstract:Objective: To determine the clinical and pathological features of basal cell adenoma (BCA) of the parotid gland. Methods: This is a retrospective study of 29 parotid BCAs in 28 patients who underwent surgery at the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, between October 2000 and June 2013. The tumors were categorized according to their location in the parotid gland as superior superficial lobe, inferior superficial lobe and deep lobe. Results: The mean age was 57.0 years (range, 32-83 years). The clinical manifestations of parotid BCAs were consistent with those of other benign parotid tumors. There were no significant differences in age, average disease duration and tumor size among the three tumor groups. There were 11 deep tumors (11/29, 37.9%), and five of them exhibited cystic degeneration (5/11, 45.5%). A total of 15 patients underwent FNAB examination, and the results were positive in seven patients (7/15, 46.7%). Mild facial nerve function impairment occurred in five patients (House-Brackmann grade II), of whom, three had recovered by the 6-month follow-up. No cases of local recurrence or malignant transformation were observed during follow-up. Conclusion: The clinical features of BCA are consistent with those of other benign tumors. The deep lobe of the parotid gland is more likely to develop BCAs, and thus, this diagnosis should be considered in patients with deep-lobe tumors, especially when accompanied with cystic degeneration. FNAB can increase the rate of preoperative diagnoses.
MRI Findings of Parotid Acinic Cell Carcinoma in 19 Consecutive Cases

Abstract:PURPOSE:To describe the MRI features of acinar cell carcinoma of parotid gland (AciCC) and to evaluate the diagnostic value of MR functional imaging.METHODS:A total of 269 cases of maxillofacial AciCC confirmed by surgery and pathology were analyzed. Among them, nineteen subjects with AciCC in the parotid gland underwent preoperative MRI examination (non-enhanced scan for one case, enhanced scan for 18 cases), seventeen patients underwent diffusion-weighted imaging scan, and 15 patients underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced scan. MRI findings of 19 patients were retrospectively analyzed. The lesion size, location, morphology, margin, internal composition, enhancement pattern and functional imaging characteristics were analyzed. SPSS 25.0 software package was used for statistical analysis.RESULTS:Among 269 cases of maxillofacial AciCC, there were 108 males and 161 females, male: female = 1:1.49, aged from 4 to 89 years, with a mean age of (45.95±17.33) years. 84.4% (227/269) were located in the parotid gland. On MRI images, 78.9% (15/19) had well-defined margin, 57.9% (11/19) were round or oval, and 36.8% (7/19) were lobed nodules. One case had irregular morphology and peripheral invasion. The range of maximum diameter was 6-56 mm, averaging (24.8±15.3) mm. Internal composition showed 57.9% (11/19) were cystic solid, 42.1% (8/19) were solid, 31.6% (6/19) had bleeding. T2-weighted MRI showed 52.6% (10/19) with envelope structure, 15.8% (3/19) with low signal separation inside, 38.9%(7/18) had uniform enhancement, and 61.1%(11/18) had uneven enhancement. Functional imaging showed the mean ADC value of tumor was (1.026±0.194)×10-3 mm2/s(n=17). 86.7%(13/15) TIC was type Ⅱ.CONCLUSIONS:Most maxillofacial AciCC are located in the parotid gland. It is difficult to distinguish AciCC from benign tumors with conventional MRI in morphology. The ADC value of AciCC is lower than that of benign tumors, and the type of TIC curve is mostly type Ⅱ. Combination of morphology and functional imaging can improve the diagnostic accuracy of this disease.
Pleomorphic Adenoma of Parotid Gland: MR Imaging Findings

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the diagnostic value of MR imaging and conventional contrast -enhanced MR imaging appearance in pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the parotid gland.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed pre- and post-contrast MR images of pleomorphic adenoma with pathologic correlation in 17 cases (6 men and 11 women; median age, 50 years; range, 27-70 years) collected between 2005 and 2011 from our pathologic and radiologic database.RESULTS:All of the tumors showed well-defined margins, and 12 patients with lobulations. The tumors in 16 patients had capsules. The average maximal diameter was 2.6cm (ranged from 1.0 to 6.3cm). Cystic changes were seen in 6 cases and calcification in 2 cases. On T1-weighted images (T1WI), all tumors showed homogeneously SI equal or lower to normal muscle. On fat-suppressed T2-weighted images (T2WI), all of them showed marked higher SI. On gadolinium-enhanced T1WI, all tumors demonstrated marked enhancement. The tumor showed homogenous enhancement in 4 cases and inhomogeneous in the remaining 13 cases. The enhancement pattern showed low wash-in.CONCLUSIONS:PA of the parotid gland tends to be an isolated and well-defined mass with lobulations, capsules and cystic and/or calcification changes on MR imaging. PA of the parotid gland had characteristics in delayed enhancement patterns.
Clinical and MRI Analysis of Adenolymphoma in the Parotid Gland

Abstract:Objective:The clinical characters,MR images and pathology results of adenolymphomas in the parotid glands were reviewed.Methods:A retrospective review of 26 cases.Results:The age of 26 cases ranged from 45 to 82,with a mean of 54.5.Twenty-three cases had smoking history (88.5%).The ratio of male to female was 5.5:1.Synchronous adenolymphomas in bilateral parotids were found in 30.8% (16 lesions in 8 cases).Thirty-one lesions among 26 cases (34 lesions in all) were located in the posterior and inferior quadrant (91.2%).Thirty-one focus demonstrated low signal intensity on T1WI.Twenty-nine focus showed hypointensity on T2WI.All 34 focus displayed inhomogeneous enhancement,the signal intensity higher than that of parotid gland.Conclusion:Adenolymphoma predominately occurred in the male patient over 50 years of age.Most of them were located in the posterior and inferior quadrant,with the characteristics of multiple synchronous lesions in bilateral parotids.Dynamic MRI is recommended as an effective diagnostic method for adenolymphoma.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the CT ,ultrasonic and clinical features of basal cell adenoma (BCA) of the parotid gland .Methods Demographics of patients with BCA were evaluated ,and lesion characteristics of CT (n=18) and sonog-raphy (n =14) were reviewed .The CT and ultrasound characteristics of 18 cases (19 lesions) and 14 cases (15 lesions) of BCA ,confirmed by pathology ,were studied retrospectively .The gender ,age ,clinical manifestation ,tumor localization , size ,number ,shape ,CT value and enhanced pattern ,ultrasonic echoes and blood distribution were analyzed .Results 19 lesions were found in 18 cases ,among which only 2 lesions located in the same side .The size of all tumors were within 6~31 mm with mean (19 .1 ± 6 .5) mm .18 lesions were oval .18 lesions were locate at the superficial lobe ,and 9 tumors each at the superficial region and deeper region of superficial lobe with mean size (17 .2 ± 5 .2) mm and (23.0 ± 5 .4) mm , respectively .Cystic regions were found in 11 lesions on CT imaging ,and marked enhancement on 6 lesions and mild en-hancement on 3 after contrast enhancement .On ultrasound images ,enhanced posterior echo was shown in 13 lesions ,fluid area and blood flow signal in each 6 lesions .Conclusion The BCA of the parotid gland has certain clinical and imaging fea-tures ,which is helpful to the qualitative diagnosis of basal cell adenoma .Ultrasound can display the outline and the inter-nal cystic area of the tumor more clearly than CT plain scan .
22 Cases with Pathologic Correlation Adenoma of the Parotid Gland: A Report of CT and Ultrasound Features of Basal Cell

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parotid gland BCA is a rare benign tumor. Only a few studies describing the imaging features of BCA have been published. This study investigated CT and sonography characteristics of BCA of the parotid gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographics of patients with BCA were evaluated, and lesion characteristics of CT ( n (cid:1) 22) and sonography ( n (cid:1) 20) were reviewed. These cases were grouped into 3 types: type 1 tumors, located at the superficial region of superficial lobe of the parotid gland; type 2 tumors, located at the deeper region of superficial lobe; and type 3 tumors, located in the deep lobe. Imaging findings were correlated with pathology. RESULTS: Sixteen patients (73%) were female and 6 (27%) were male. The mean age was 51.5 years (SD 10.2; range 32–73). The size of the tumors was less than 30 mm. The sizes of type 1, type 2, and type 3 tumors were 11.4 (cid:2) 3.29 mm, 19.3 (cid:2) 5.44 mm, and 26 (cid:2) 3.6 mm, respectively. The CT attenuation increase was 64.5 (cid:2) 19 HU on contrast CT. The type 1 tumors were solid (11/11), showed homogeneous or slightly heterogeneous enhancement on CT, and were homogeneously or slightly heterogeneously hypoechoic on sonography. Cystic changes tended to occur in type 2 (7/8) or type 3 (2/3) tumors, which showed obvious heterogeneous attenuation on CT and anechoic on sonography. CONCLUSIONS: The BCA tends to be small and shows early intense enhancement. The solid tumor is common in the superficial region of the parotid gland, and cystic lesions occur mostly in the deeper parts of the superficial lobe or in the deep lobe. ABBREVIATIONS

Diagnostic value of MR imaging for parathyroid adenoma

Abstract:Objective To investigate the MRI findings of parathyroid adenoma and to evaluate their significance in the qualitative and localized diagnosis together with review of the literature.Methods Five patients(3 men,2 women;aged 21-39 years)with surgically and pathologically proved parathyroid adenoma underwent MR imaging of the parathyroid glands before the operation.All procedures were performed by using a SIEMENS sonata 1.5 T superconductive MR system.Results All lesions of parathyriod adenoma in 5 patients were located in the esophagotracheal resses of thyroid inferiority.The lesions in 4 cases were slightly hypointense signals on T1WI and hyperintense signals on T2WI.In the remaining one case,the lesion was heterogeneous intensity associated with partial necrosis which was cofirmed by pathology.On MR images,the border of lesions was clear and their size ranged from 1.2×1.0×1.6(cm)to 2.2×3.1×4.1(cm).Conclusion MR imaging can accurately reveal the size,shape,location of parathyroid adenoma and its relationship with neighbor tissue structures,thus it is effective means for diagnosing parathyroid adenoma and planning its treatment protocol.
Value of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Displaying the Parotid Gland Segments of the Facial Nerve

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in displaying the parotid gland segments of the facial nerve.METHODS:Sixteen volunteers (9 males and 7 females) and 132 surgically confirmed patients with parotid tumors locating in the deep or shallow lobe of the parotid gland (including 89 with benign and 43 with malignant tumors) underwent MRI using T1WI and T2WI. The transverse images were obtained with the plane tilted 35 degrees to the foot, and the coronal images were acquired using conventional scanning.RESULTS:On transverse T1WI, the parotid gland segments of the facial nerve displayed low signal with arc-shaped curve in the cross-section, showing a symmetrical dot-like low signal in the coronal plane. The facial nerve in 63% of the patients with parotid tumors in the cross-section could be displayed, but in the coronal plane the proportion reached 83%. MRI could accurately reveal the position of the parotid tumors in the deep or shallow lobe of the parotid gland.CONCLUSION:MRI can show the major portion of the parotid gland segments of the facial nerve and has important value in locating the parotid tumors and displaying the relationship between the tumor and facial nerve.
Findings of rare focal lesions in the salivary glands by high frequency ultrasound

Abstract:Objective To investigate the findings for rare focal lesions of the salivary glands by ultrasound.Methods The ultrasound images of 20 rare focal lesions in the parotid and submandibular glands included in 20 cases with pathological confirmation were retrospectively reviewed.Results Most of 14 benign lesions(including 4 basal cell adenomas,3 hemangiomas,5 benign lymphoepithelial lesions,myoepthelioma and an oncocytoma)appeared round or oval(78.6%,11/14),hypoechogenic(74.1%,10/14)and well-circumscribed(78.6%,11/14).The CDFI of 14 lesions showed no-(n=1),rare-(n=4),or rich-blood flow(n=9).The 6 malignant tumors(including 2 mucoepidermoid carcinomas,1 adenoid cystic carcinoma,1 cystadenocarcinoma,1 adenocarcinoma,and 1 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma)were irregular(n=2,33.3%)or oval(n=4,66.7%).Most of them were heterogeneously echoic(83.8%,5/6),ill-circumscribed(66.7%,4/6),and 3(50.0%)showed intralesional fine calcification.The CDFI of 5 lesions showed no-(n=1),rare-(n=1),or rich-blood flow(n=3).Conclusions The rare focal lesions in the salivary glands is helpful for diagnosis of salivary gland lesions by ultrasound,but ultrasonic appearances may be overlapped and misdiagnosed.
