Abstract:The two-dimensional, time-dependent, reactive Navier–Stokes equations including the effects of viscosity, thermal conduction and molecular diffusion were solved to reveal the wave evolution and chemical dynamics involved in the re-initiation process. The computation was performed for hydrogen–oxygen–argon mixtures at the low initial pressure (8.00 kPa), using detailed chemical reaction model. The results show that, the decoupled leading shock reflects on the right wall of the vertical branch. High temperature and pressure behind the reflected shock induce the generation of hot spots and local explosion. Therefore, the re-initiation of gaseous detonation occurs. In the re-initiation area, there exist very high OH concentration and no H 2 concentration. However, in front of reflected shock, there exist relatively high H 2 concentration and no OH radicals. Additionally, the shock–flame interaction induces RM instability. This results in the fast mixing between hot reacted gas mixture and the relatively cold unreacted gas mixture and accelerates the chemical reactions. However, the shock–flame interaction contributes much less to the re-initiation, in contrast with shock reflection. The transition of leading shock from regular reflection to Mach reflection happens during the re-initiation. The computed evolution of wave structures involved in the re-initiation is qualitatively agreeable with that from the experimental schlieren images.
Numerical Investigation of Shock Wave Reflections Near the Head Ends of Rotating Detonation Engines

Abstract:The influence of various chamber geometries on shock wave reflections near the head end of rotating detonation engines was investigated. A hydrogen/air one-step chemical reaction model was used. The results demonstrated that the variation in flow field along the radial direction was not obvious when the chamber width was small, but became progressively more obvious as the chamber width increased. The thrust increased linearly, and the detonation height and the fuel-based gross specific impulse were almost constant as the chamber width increased. Near the head end, shock waves reflected repeatedly between the inner and outer walls. Both regular and Mach reflections were found near the head end. The length of the Mach stem increased as the chamber length increased. When the chamber width, chamber length and injection parameters were the same, the larger inner radius resulted in more shock wave reflections between the inner and outer walls. The greater the ratio of the chamber width to the inner radius, the weaker the shock wave reflection near the head end. The detonation height on the outer wall and the thrust, both increased correspondingly, while the specific impulse was almost constant as the inner radius of the chamber increased. The numerical shock wave reflection phenomena coincided qualitatively with the experimental results.

Abstract:Gaseous detonation wave reflection on the rough wedge was experimentally investigated by soot track measurements. Various wedge angles, step numbers and initial pressures were taken into account. The results show that the Mach reflection can form on the rough surface due to the three-dimensional structure of the cellular detonation wave or the pseudo triple-point configuration. The wedge angle is still a significant parameter to affect the Mach stem height and the triple-point trajectory. The Mach stem on the rough surface is weaker and the triple-point is easily deflected due to the triple-point disappearance from the Mach stem. The wedge with smaller step number leads to the triple-point trajectory starting in the downstream region, instead of its starting from the wedge apex. As the step number increases, the Mach stem height on the rough wedge gradually approaches the one on the smooth wedge. The initial pressure has a more significant effect on the Mach reflection on the rough surface compared to that on the smooth surface. Moreover, the Mach reflection on the rough wedge keeps localized self-similarity, and satisfies the frozen limit in the near field and the equilibrium limit in the far field. The critical wedge angle of the transition from regular reflection to Mach reflection is dependent on the step number.

Abstract:Mechanism of deflagration to detonation transition(DDT)of liquid octane/air mixture is studied by using theory of one-dimension reacting flow,particle-trajectory model and two-step reaction model,of which the numerical formulation is described on the S αγ,β scheme of gasdynamic step and a second-order accurate Adams method of chemical step in Lagrangian mass coordination system,based on which code-CPTD is developed.Basic properties of liquid-fueled detonation structure together with the effects of ignition energy and initial temperature of detonable mixtures on detonation structure and development are investigated in our current study.Based on the results obtained numerically,it's found that the increasing of both ignition energy and initial temperature of detonable mixtures in the tube will significantly enhance transition to detonation.Detonation intensity rises with ignition energy,but decreases as initial temperature increases.Our calculations show that the numerical results are in good agreement with experimental ones,which implies that a feasible numerical method has been provided here to simulate pulse detonation engine operation processes including DDT phenomena.
Gaseous Detonation Propagation in A Bifurcated Tube

Abstract:Gaseous detonation propagation in a bifurcated tube was experimentally and numerically studied for stoichiometric hydrogen and oxygen mixtures diluted with argon. Pressure detection, smoked foil recording and schlieren visualization were used in the experiments. Numerical simulation was carried out at low initial pressure (8.00kPa), based on the reactive Navier–Stokes equations in conjunction with a detailed chemical reaction model. The results show that the detonation wave is strongly disturbed by the wall geometry of the bifurcated tube and undergoes a successive process of attenuation, failure, re-initiation and the transition from regular reflection to Mach reflection. Detonation failure is attributed to the rarefaction waves from the left-hand corner by decoupling leading shock and reaction zones. Re-initiation is induced by the inert leading shock reflection on the right-hand wall in the vertical branch. The branched wall geometry has only a local effect on the detonation propagation. In the horizontal branch, the disturbed detonation wave recovers to a self-sustaining one earlier than that in the vertical branch. A critical case was found in the experiments where the disturbed detonation wave can be recovered to be self-sustaining downstream of the horizontal branch, but fails in the vertical branch, as the initial pressure drops to 2.00kPa. Numerical simulation also shows that complex vortex structures can be observed during detonation diffraction. The reflected shock breaks the vortices into pieces and its interaction with the unreacted recirculation region induces an embedded jet. In the vertical branch, owing to the strength difference at any point and the effect of chemical reactions, the Mach stem cannot be approximated as an arc. This is different from the case in non-reactive steady flow. Generally, numerical simulation qualitatively reproduces detonation attenuation, failure, re-initiation and the transition from regular reflection to Mach reflection observed in experiments.
On the role of transverse detonation waves in the re-establishment of attenuated detonations in methane-oxygen

Abstract:The problem of detonation attenuation in stoichiometric methane-oxygen and its re-establishment following its interaction with obstacles was investigated using high resolution numerical simulation. The main focus was on the role of the transverse detonation on the re-establishment of the detonation wave. We applied an efficient thermochemically derived four-step global combustion model using an Euler simulation framework to investigate the critical regimes present. While past attempts at using one- or two- step models have failed to capture transverse detonations, for this scenario, our simulations have demonstrated that the four-step combustion model is able to capture this feature. We suggest that to correctly model detonation re-initiation in characteristically unstable mixtures, an applied combustion model should contain at least an adequate description to permit the correct ignition and state variable response when changes in temperature and pressure occur. Our simulations reveal that there is a relationship between the critical outcomes possible and the mixture cell size, and while pockets of unburned gas may exist when a detonation re-initiates, it is not the direct rapid consumption of these pockets that gives rise to transverse detonations. Instead, the transverse detonations are initiated through pressure amplification of reaction zones at burned/unburned gas interfaces whose combustion rates have been enhanced through Richmyer-Meshkov instabilities associated with the passing of transverse shock waves, or by spontaneous ignition of hot spots, which can form into detonations through the Zel'dovich gradient mechanism. In both situations, non-uniform ignition delay times are found to play a role. Finally, we found that the transverse detonations are in fact Chapman-Jouguet detonations, but whose presence contributes to overdriving the re-initiated detonation along the Mach stem.

The critical conditions for the re-ignition and detonation formation from Mach reflections of curved decaying shocks

Abstract:The objective of this study is to determine the critical conditions for a detonation wave formation following a Mach reflection of two incident shocks. This problem is central to the propagation mechanism of cellular detonations, where such periodic reflections occur continuously. A new experimental technique is introduced that permits the isolation of this Mach reflection. The technique is inspired by that of White (1963) and uses a detonation passing through a bifurcated converging-diverging nozzle to reproducibly generate the desired shock reflection at its exit, where the two transmitted mis-aligned incident shocks interact. The collision process was monitored with high-speed Schlieren videos. The experiments were performed in mixtures of methane-oxygen and hydrogen-oxygen-argon. Three distinct regimes of transmission were identified: detonation formation, decaying Mach shock followed by a flame, and inert Mach shock with no re-ignition. The condition separating the re-ignition and no re-ignition was very well predicted by the critical decay rate ignition theory of Eckett et al. On the other hand, the transition between detonation formation and ignition was found to correlate much better with the critical curvature concept of quasi-steady curved detonations of Kasimov and Stewart. Both mixtures were found in excellent agreement with this criterion, established on the basis of experimental velocity-curvature data available in the literature for these mixtures. For the hydrogen detonations, this criterion was also in agreement with the critical curvature predicted by ZND theory. For the methane detonations, order of magnitude disagreement was observed with the ZND model prediction, further confirming the propensity of irregular cellular detonations to propagate under higher curvatures than predicted by laminar detonation theory.

Abstract:This experimental study addresses the re-initiation mechanism of detonation waves following the Mach reflection of a shock-flame complex. The detonation diffraction around a cylinder is used to reproducibly generate the shock-flame complex of interest. The experiments are performed in methane-oxygen. We use a novel experimental technique of coupling a two-in-line-spark flash system with a double-frame camera in order to obtain microsecond time resolution permitting accurate schlieren velocimetry. The first series of experiments compares the non-reactive sequence of shock reflections with the reflection over a rough wall under identical conditions. It was found that the hot reaction products generated along the rough wall are entrained by the wall jet into a large vortex structure behind the Mach stem. The second series of experiments performed in more sensitive mixtures addressed the sequence of events leading to the detonation establishment along the Mach and transverse waves. Following ignition and jet entrainment, a detonation first appears along the Mach stem while the transverse wave remains non-reactive. The structure of the unburned tongue however indicates local instabilities and hot spot formation, leading to the rapid reaction of this gas. Numerical simulations are also reported, confirming the sequence of ignition events obtained experimentally.

Abstract:Due to their high thermal cycle efficiency and compact combustor, oblique detonation engines hold great promise for hypersonic propulsion. Previous numerical simulations of oblique detonation waves have predominantly solved the Euler equations, disregarding the influence of viscosity and boundary layers. This work aims to study how the interaction between the oblique detonation wave and the boundary layer influences the detonation wave structures in confined spaces. Two-dimensional numerical simulations considering detailed chemistry are performed in a stoichiometric H 2 /air mixture. The results indicate that the wedge-induced oblique detonation wave generates a strong adverse pressure gradient upon impacting the upper wall, leading to boundary layer separation. The separation zone subsequently induces an oblique shock wave near the upper wall, and an increase in separation angle will cause the transition from an oblique shock wave to an oblique detonation wave. The formation of the separation zone reduces the actual flow area and may even lead to flow choking; its obstructive effect is similar to that of the Mach stem in inviscid flow. To establish a connection between the viscous recirculation zone and the inviscid Mach stem, we introduce a dimensionless parameter, η , based on the inviscid assumption. It is defined as the ratio of the inviscid Mach stem height to the channel entrance height. This parameter can be used to identify three wave systems in a viscous flow field: separation shock-dominated wave systems, separation detonation-dominated wave systems, and unstable Mach stem-dominated wave systems. Among these, the appearance of detonation Mach stems leads to flow choking, and the shock-detonation wave system continually moves upstream, ultimately causing the failure of the oblique detonation combustion. The findings of this study provide new insights into the investigation of the influence of viscosity on the flow structure of oblique detonation waves.

Abstract:This study determines the effect of the initial pressure on the propagation of a Chapman–Jouguet detonation wave from a stoichiometric C 3 H 8 /O 2 mixture (donor) to a stoichiometric C 3 H 8 /air mixture (acceptor). Depending on the initial pressure ratio in the donor and the acceptor, the result can be a smooth transmission, a re-initiated detonation wave, or a transmitted shock wave. When the donor is divided into a driver donor and a driven donor, the degree of overdrive in a driven donor varies with the donor pressure ratio. There must be a greater degree of overdrive in the driven donor for re-initiation of a detonation wave in the acceptor, particularly if the initial pressure in the driven donor is lower than the Chapman–Jouguet pressure in the acceptor. The bi-dimensional effect is also another major factor.

Abstract:In the present work, using a high-resolution three-dimensional numerical analysis, the initiation and propagation mechanism of a detonation wave is studied in a circular tube with a hot jet initiation. The reactive Euler equations with a one-step two-species chemistry model are solved based on the structured adaptive mesh refinement technique. Influences of both a single hot jet and impinging double hot jets on the formation of the detonation wave are studied. For each case, the objective is to investigate the role of the tube wall on the initiation and propagation of the detonation wave. The result for both cases shows that the hot jet-induced bow shock forms a complex reflection structure in the circular tube. The reflection effect of the circular wall strengthens the shock and facilitates the formation of the Mach stem, which leads to the formation of the detonation wave. However, when the hot jet condition and the total area of jet hole remain the same, for the case of initiation using double hot jets, the reflection strength of the bow shocks weakens when the diameters of the hot jets become smaller. When using a single hot jet, the initiated detonation is overdriven and propagates in the two-headed mode. In this initiation mode, by increasing the inflow Mach number, a four-headed mode detonation front is formed, while in the case of impinging double hot jets, a four-headed mode detonation front is initiated directly.

Abstract:<p>The influence of the viscous boundary layer on the oblique detonation wave structure has been simulated and analyzed by solving the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations containing the hydrogen/air elementary reaction model. It is found that the effect of the viscous boundary layer can be neglected in the smooth transition initiation structure, but not in the abrupt transition initiation structure. The interaction of the lateral shock wave and the viscous boundary layer results in the formation of a high-temperature recirculation zone near the wall of the initiation zone, a novel structure that does not appear in inviscid formulations. Within this structure, the chemical reaction is triggered to occur in advance, eventually leading to the equilibrium initiation position relocating upstream compared with the inviscid case. Nevertheless, the viscous boundary layer has a limited impact on the main flow region downstream of the oblique detonation. The shock wave structures and pressure distributions at various Mach numbers are obtained computationally and analyzed in detail.</p>

Abstract:Shock wave reflection on the wedge has garnered wide application. This paper investigated transition process of the Mach reflection of cellular detonation for premixed mixtures with different stability. Smoked foils were strategically placed at different positions to record the Mach reflection in three dimensions under varying wedge angles. The results indicated that the triple-point trajectory adheres to a transition process from the unreactive three-shock to the reactive three-shock when the Mach stem propagating along the wedge. There exists a critical Mach stem height corresponding to the transition process. For the stable premixed mixtures 2 H 2 +O 2 +3Ar at 10 kPa and C 2 H 2 +2.5O 2 +8.17Ar at 5 kPa, critical Mach stem heights are approximately 0.81 cm and 0.74 cm, respectively. As for unstable premixed mixtures C 2 H 2 +5N 2 O at 3 kPa and 5 kPa, they are about 0.99 cm and 0.71 cm, respectively. Moreover, the transition process of cellular structures on the wedge surface can be divided into three stages. The distance from the initial position of the wedge to the location where small cells first appear for unstable premixed mixtures is the shortest than that of stable premixed mixtures. This implies that the detonation instability (or mixture composition) does indeed have an impact on the transition process of the Mach reflection.

Abstract:<p>The origin and chaotic propagation of multiple detonative waves in the two-dimensional modelled rotating detonation combustor fueled by premixed hydrogen/air mixtures are numerically investigated with detailed chemical mechanism. The discrete reactants inlets are adopted, to mimic the spatial non-uniformity of the propellant in the practical Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) combustor. The emphasis is laid on the mechanism to induce the new detonation waves in the RDE and the influence of the reactant non-uniformity in RDE on the critical detonation combustion dynamics. The numerical experiments show that the stability and number of the rotating detonation wave are affected by the inlet total pressures and reactant equivalence ratios. The RDE with high inlet total pressure would experience chaotic instability before reaching stable propagation of detonation waves in near-stoichiometric mixtures, while for the RDE with low inlet total pressure, no chaotic propagation transient after the detonation initiation is observed. It is found that the chaotic propagation stage is responsible for the variation of the rotating detonative wave number and propagation direction. Frequent detonation extinction, re-ignition and re-orientation, irregular reactants refill zones, co-rotating and counter-rotating detonation waves are observed during chaotic stage. The explosive spots arising during this stage, which may initiate new detonation waves, result from the mutual enhancement between the travelling shock waves and the deflagrative fronts. Furthermore, the predictability of the chaotic detonation wave propagation is further confirmed in terms of the initial and boundary conditions, mesh and chemical mechanism. It is also found that the fuel equivalence ratio has a considerable impact on the number of the stabilized detonation wave and velocity deficit.</p>

Abstract:In experimental studies, single-wave mode and two counter-rotating wave mode are often observed in rotating detonation combustors. To investigate the mechanism behind different propagation modes, high-resolution numerical simulations of two-dimensional detonation in hydrogen/air mixtures are conducted by solving the reactive Navier–Stokes equations with a detailed chemical mechanism. The numerical results show that the occurrence of the dual-wave detonation propagation mode is positively influenced by an increase in both the channel width and the initial pressure. The dual-wave modes are observed when increasing the channel width, and it is found that the dual-wave modes are caused by increasing the residual premixed gas height near the inner wall. When increasing the initial pressure, the initial peak detonation heat release increases, which leads to the increase in the hot spot intensity formed, and it is found that the dual-wave modes are mainly caused by the interactions between the initial detonation wave and the inner wall. However, the initial equivalent ratio appears to have a relatively minor impact on the detonation propagation mode due to a relatively narrow range variation of physical properties. The peak heat release rate exerts a greater influence on the change of the propagation mode than the induction time does through a wider range test on rotating detonation engines' working condition. Moreover, the velocities and the cell sizes of detonation waves propagating in different directions with different channel widths are also analyzed, revealing that the characteristics of the detonation waves propagating in different directions are nearly the same.

Numerical study on re-initiation phenomenon of gaseous detonation induced by the coalescence of high temperature regions

Abstract:The re-initiation phenomenon of gaseous detonation in a heart-shape tube was numerically studied. The 2nd additive semi-implicit Runge-Kutta method and 5th order WENO scheme were used to solve two-dimensional reactive Euler equations. Detailed chemical reaction model was utilized to describe the heat release of detonation. The results show that, when gaseous detonation propagates in a heart-shape tube, influenced by the wall geometry, detonation fails and then re-initiates. Detonation re-initiation is induced by the coalescence of high temperature regions twice at the different place in the tube. Some complicated phenomena such as the formation of unreacted gas pockets and jets, Mach reflection, shock-flame interaction and the resultant flame instabilities exist in the current detonation flow field. The computed evolution of cellular pattern in the process of detonation re-initiation is qualitatively consistent with that from the experiments.

Abstract:The transition between Mach reflection (MR) and regular reflection (RR) of gaseous detonations in argon-diluted stoichiometric hydrogen–oxygen was investigated experimentally using a wedge with a concave–convex surface. The continuous MR triple-point trajectory was recorded using the smoked foil technique, from which the transition angles for transitions could be determined. Similar to the reflection of a non-reacting shock wave, the non-stationary hysteresis phenomenon was found for detonation reflection, i.e., the transition angle was much larger than that for transition. In addition, the transition angle on the convex surface was smaller than that for detonation reflection over a single half-cylinder. This is opposite to what is found for non-reacting shock wave reflection.

Abstract:As a detonation wave propagates from a confined tube to an unconfined space, it undergoes di↵raction, which is characterized by a change of geometry from a quasi-planar wave to a cylindrical or spherical wave [1–4]. Depending on the mixture composition, thermodynamic conditions, detonation velocity at the tube exit, the geometry of the area expansion and tube cross section, the detonation wave can be either extinguished (sub-critical regime) or re-initiated (super-critical regime) [2]. Detonation di↵raction has been extensively studied both experimentally and through numerical simulations. Since Zeldovich et al.’s pioneering work [5], numerous studies have been performed on detonation di↵raction using a variety of experimental geometry and techniques, as summarized by Schultz [4] in 2000. Since then, a number of investigations have been performed, for example by Khasainov et al. [6], Meredith et al. [7], and Nagura et al. [8]. The most advanced experimental investigation is the study of Pintgen [1, 2] who performed simultaneous imaging of the shock front and reaction zone, using schlieren and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF), as well as multi-exposure and stereoscopic chemiluminescence imaging. Jones et al. [10–13] and Oran et al. [14, 15] used numerical simulations to study the di↵raction of detonation and reignition process at an abrupt tube diameter increase (180 angle). Layered and uniform H2-O2(-Ar) mixtures were modeled. The chemical schemes were either 1-step or 2-step models. Arienti et al. [9] and Nagura et al. [8] performed simulations of detonation di↵raction from a tube to an unconfined volume (90 angle). Arienti used a 1-step reaction model characterized by di↵erent activation energies whereas Nagura employed a 2-step scheme to model a stoichiometric H2-air mixture. Khasainov et al. [6] studied the di↵raction of detonation from a tube to a cone. A stoichiometric C2H2-O2 mixture was considered using a 1-step pressure dependent reaction model. Deiterding [16] studied the failure and reignition of di↵racting detonations in a stoichiometric H2-O2 mixture diluted with 70% argon. High-resolution numerical simulations with mesh refinement were performed using Euler equations. The reactivity of the mixture was described using a detailed reaction model composed of 34 irreversible reactions and 9 species. From this literature review, we see that most numerical studies have been performed using an inviscid gas model (Euler equations) and global (1or 2-step) kinetic schemes. The present study aims at performing numerical simulation of detonation di↵raction using a viscous gas model (Navier-Stokes equations) and accurate chemical and thermodynamic models to allow for a more realistic comparison with the experimental data of Pintgen in terms of di↵racting detonation behaviour and structure.
Influences of viscosity and thermal conductivity on detonation waves

Abstract:One-dimensional and two-dimensional continuously rotating detonation waves are simulated using pre-mixed 2H2/O2 gas mixtures. The aim of the research is to study the influences of viscosity and thermal conductivity on the development and structure of detonation waves. Based on the Navier-Stokes (N-S) and Euler equations, two-step chemical reaction model is used in numerical simulations, 5-order MPWENO scheme is used for the solution of the flux terms and 3-order TVD Runge-Kutta method is used for time integration. For the viscosity terms, center difference scheme is used. Simulation results obtained show that viscosity and thermal conductivity have little influence on the basic structure of detonation flow-field. From the numerical values obtained, the influence values of viscosity and thermal conductivity are comparatively large at places where big changes of temperature or velocity happen, however, these values are all much smaller and can be neglected compared with that of detonation waves. Thus in one-dimensional and two-dimensional continuously rotating detonation waves, viscosity and thermal conductivity have little influence on the structure and values of detonation waves.

Abstract:A numerical method of single variable iteration by temperature for solving nonlinear equations of real gas model was developed.Theoretical analysis gives effect of different heat flux and deflection angles of gas on the angle of oblique detonation wave(ODW).For a given H_2-air mixture flow,the standing range of the oblique detonation wave predicted by the real gas model is larger than that by the calorically perfect gas model,this indicates that the thermal property should be considered when calculating an oblique detonation wave.With the equivalence ratio of hydrogen to air increasing,the standing range of the oblique detonation wave is changing small.With the Mach number of oncoming flow increasing,the standing range of the oblique detonation wave increases, and the minimum turning angles of Chapman-Jouguet states decrease.The increased temperature of oncoming flow is beneficial to promote the standing range of the oblique detonation wave.The standing ability of oblique detonation wave relates to the oncoming flow condition and the angle of wedge.
