Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:A characteristic for a complex Randers metric to be a complex Berwald metric is obtained. The formula of the holomorphic curvature for complex Randers metrics is given. It is shown that a complex Berwald Randers metric with isotropic holomorphic curvature must be either usually Kählerian or locally Minkowskian. The Deicke and Brickell theorems in complex Finsler geometry are also proved.

Abstract:A Finsler metric F is said to be spherically symmetric if the orthogonal group O(n) acts as isometries of F. In this paper, we show that every spherically symmetric Finsler metric of isotropic Berwald curvature is a Randers metric. We also construct explicitly a lot of new isotropic Berwald spherically symmetric Finsler metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Finsler metrics of constant S-curvature. First we produce infinitely many Randers metrics with non-zero (constant) S-curvature which have vanishing H-curvature. They are counterexamples to Theorem 1.2 in [20]. Then we show that the existence of (alpha, beta)-metrics with arbitrary constant S-curvature in each dimension which is not Randers type by extending Li-Shen' construction.

Abstract:We derive the integral inequality of a Randers metric with isotropic S-curvature in terms of its navigation representation. Using the obtained inequality we give some rigidity results under the condition of Ricci curvature. In particular, we show the following result: Assume that an n-dimensional compact Randers manifold (M, F) has constant S-curvature c. Then (M, F) must be Riemannian if its Ricci curvature satisfies that Ric < −(n − 1)c 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Randers metrics of weakly isotropic scalar curvature. We prove that a Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature must be of isotropic $S$-curvature. Further, we prove that a conformally flat Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature is either Minkowskian or Riemannian.

Abstract:The conformai properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We first give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformai Kahler. By considering the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes, we then study the variational properties of Kahler Finsler metrics. By studying the spectral properties of two average metrics, the stabilities of critical Kähler Finsler metrics are verified. Finally, a Yamabe type problem for mean holomorphic Ricci curvature is considered, and a partial existence result is obtained.

Abstract:One important problem in Finsler geometry is that of classifying Finsler metrics of scalar curvature. By investigating the second-order differential equation for a class of Randers metrics with isotropic S-curvature, we give a global classification of these metrics of scalar curvature, generalizing a theorem previously only known in the case of locally projectively flat Randers metrics.

Abstract:Spherically symmetric metrics and Randers metrics form two rich classes of Finsler metrics. In this paper, we find an equation that characterizes pointwise projectively related spherically symmetric metrics. Some applications are given. In particular, by using known spherically symmetric metrics, we produce a lot of Randers metrics of quadratic Weyl curvature which are non-trivial in the sense that they are not of Weyl type.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a global rigidity theorem for negatively curved Finsler metrics on a compact manifold of dimension it greater than or equal to 3. We show that for such a Finsler manifold, if the flag curvature is a scalar function on the tangent bundle, then the Finsler metric is of Randers type. We also study the case when the Finsler metric is locally projectively flat.

Abstract:The Weyl curvature of a Finsler metric is investigated. This curvature constructed from Riemannain curvature. It is an important projective invariant of Finsler metrics. The author gives the necessary conditions on Weyl curvature for a Finsler metric to be Randers metric and presents examples of Randers metrics with non-scalar curvature. A global rigidity theorem for compact Finsler manifolds satisfying such conditions is proved. It is showed that for such a Finsler manifold, if Ricci scalar is negative, then Finsler metric is of Randers type.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Landsberg curvature of a Finsler metric via conformal navigation problem. We show that the Landsberg curvature of F is proportional to its Cartan torsion where F is the Finsler metric produced from a Landsberg metric and its closed vector field in terms of the conformal navigation problem generalizing results previously known in the cases when F is a Randers metric or the Funk metric on a strongly convex domain. We also prove that the Killing navigation problem has the Landsberg curvature preserving property for a closed vector field.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove two rigidity results for non-positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. Our first main result yields an extension of Hu-Deng's well-known result proven for the Randers metrics. Indeed, we prove that every connected homogeneous Finsler space with non-positive flag curvature and isotropic S-curvature is Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We extend the Szabó's rigidity theorem for Berwald surfaces and show that homogeneous isotropic Berwald metrics with non-positive flag curvature are Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We prove that a homogeneous $(\alpha, \beta)$-metrics has isotropic mean Berwald curvature if and only if it has vanishing mean Berwald curvature generalizing result previously only known in the case of Randers metrics. Our second main result is to show that every homogeneous $(\alpha,\beta)$-metric with non-positive flag curvature and almost isotropic S-curvature is Riemannian or locally Minkowskian.

The Geometric Meaning of Randers Metrics With Isotropic S-curvature

Abstract:The Zermelo navigation on Riemannian manifolds provides a succinct and geometric description of Randers metrics. With this description, D. Bao, C. Robles and Z. Shen have completely classified Randers metrics of constant flag curvature. In this paper, I study Randers metrics under the navigation description and discover two sufficient and necessary conditions for Randers metrics of special curvature properties, which are more geometrically meaningful than the traditional description. And several propositions and examples resulted from these conditions are included. Furthermore, I investigate thoroughly with Randers metrics of Berwald type under the navigation description.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study the Randers metric on two-spheres of revolution in order to obtain new families of Finsler of Randers type metrics with simple cut locus. We determine the geodesics behavior, conjugate and cut loci of some families of Finsler metrics of Randers type whose navigation data is not a Killing field and without sectional or flag curvature restrictions. Several examples of Randers metrics whose cut locus is simple are shown.
