Abstract:With the ever increasing availability of computing power, attention is being turned to large eddy simulation as a design tool at the component level. To maintain integration with pre-existing design processes based on solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, legacy RANS codes are being pressed into service with minimal adaptation to perform large eddy simulations. Often, these legacy RANS solvers are based around the approximate Riemann solver of Roe. It is shown here that the Roe scheme is not ideally suited to large eddy simulations, and may require excessive user care to extract worthwhile information — a process not always possible within design timeframes. A different discretisation scheme, which is shown to conserve kinetic energy, but which also shares some of the favourable structural behaviour of Roe’s is implemented, and is then tested on a range of geometries, both canonical and industrial. One of the advantages of this approach is its ability to eliminate the smoothing terms which have a strong deleterious affect on the LES performance of Roe. This allows explicit subgrid models to be sensibly applied. The new scheme, with explicit turbulence modelling, is found to outperform the Roe scheme for LES in all of the test cases.
Large Eddy Simulation and CDNS Investigation of T106C Low-Pressure Turbine

Abstract:This study investigates the aerodynamic performance of a low-pressure turbine, namely the T106C, by large eddy simulation (LES) and coarse grid direct numerical simulation (CDNS) at a Reynolds number of 100,000. Existing experimental data were used to validate the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool. The effects of subgrid scale (SGS) models, mesh densities, computational domains and boundary conditions on the CFD predictions are studied. On the blade suction surface, a separation zone starts at a location of about 55% along the suction surface. The prediction of flow separation on the turbine blade is always found to be difficult and is one of the focuses of this work. The ability of Smagorinsky and wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE) model in predicting the flow separation is compared. WALE model produces better predictions than the Smagorinsky model. CDNS produces very similar predictions to WALE model. With a finer mesh, the difference due to SGS models becomes smaller. The size of the computational domain is also important. At blade midspan, three-dimensional (3D) features of the separated flow have an effect on the downstream flows, especially for the area near the reattachment. By further considering the effects of endwall secondary flows, a better prediction of the flow separation near the blade midspan can be achieved. The effect of the endwall secondary flow on the blade suction surface separation at the midspan is explained with the analytical method based on the Biot–Savart Law.
All-speed Roe Scheme for the Large Eddy Simulation of Homogeneous Decaying Turbulence

Abstract:ABSTRACT As a type of shock-capturing scheme, the traditional Roe scheme fails in large eddy simulation (LES) because it cannot reproduce important turbulent characteristics, such as the famous k−5/3 spectral law, as a consequence of the large numerical dissipation. In this work, the Roe scheme is divided into five parts, namely, ξ, δUp, δpp, δUu, and δpu, which denote basic upwind dissipation, pressure difference-driven modification of interface fluxes, pressure difference-driven modification of pressure, velocity difference-driven modification of interface fluxes, and velocity difference-driven modification of pressure, respectively. Then, the role of each part in the LES of homogeneous decaying turbulence with a low Mach number is investigated. Results show that the parts δUu, δpp, and δUp have little effect on LES. Such minimal effect is integral to computational stability, especially for δUp. The large numerical dissipation is due to ξ and δpu, each of which features a larger dissipation than the sub-grid scale model. On the basis of these conditions, an improved all-speed Roe scheme for LES is proposed. This scheme can provide satisfactory LES results even for coarse grid resolutions with usually adopted second-order reconstructions for the finite volume method.
An Overset Grid Method for Large Eddy Simulation of Turbomachinery Stages.

Abstract:A coupling method based on the overset grid approach has been successfully developed to couple multi-copies of a massively-parallel unstructured compressible LES solver AVBP for turbomachinery applications. As proper LES predictions require minimizing artificial dissipation as well as dispersion of turbulent structures, the numerical treatment of the moving interface between stationary and rotating components has been thoroughly tested on cases involving acoustical wave propagation, vortex propagation through a translating interface and a cylinder wake through a rotating interface. Convergence and stability of the coupled schemes show that a minimum number of overlapping points are required for a given scheme. The current accuracy limitation is locally given by the interpolation scheme at the interface, but with a limited and localized error. For rotor–stator type applications, the moving interface only introduces a spurious weak tone at the rotational frequency provided the latter is correctly sampled. The approach has then been applied to the QinetiQ MT1 high-pressure transonic experimental turbine to illustrate the potential of rotor/stator LES in complex, high Reynolds-number industrial turbomachinery configurations. Both wave propagation and generation are considered. Mean LES statistics agree well with experimental data and bring improvement over previous RANS or URANS results.

Abstract:The context of integrated numerical simulations of gas turbine engines by use of high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) tools recently emerged as a promising path to improve engines design and understanding. Relying on massively parallel super-computing such propositions still have to prove feasibility to efficiently take advantage of the ever increasing computing power made available worldwide. Although Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has recently proven its superiority in the context of the combustion chamber of gas turbine, methodologies need to be developed and start addressing the problem of the turbomachinery stages, if integrated simulations based on LES are to be foreseen. In the proposed work an in-house code and strategy, called TurboAVBP, is developed for turbomachinery), LES thanks to the coupling of multi-copies of the unstructured compressible reacting LES solver AVBP, designed to run efficiently on high performance massively parallel architectures. Aside from the specificity of such wall bounded flows, rotor/stator LES type simulations require specific attention and the interface should not interfere with the numeric scheme to preserve proper representation of the unsteady physics crossing this interface. A tentative LES compliant solution based on moving overset grids method is proposed and evaluated in this work for high-fidelity simulation of the rotor/stator interactions. Simple test cases of increasing difficulty with reference numerical are detailed and prove the solution in handling acoustics, vortices and turbulence. The approach is then applied to the QinetiQ MT1 high-pressure transonic turbine for comparison with experimental data. Two configurations are computed: the first one is composed of 1 scaled stator section and 2 rotors while the second computation considers the geometrically accurate periodic quarter of the machine, i.e. 8 stators and 15 rotors to test scalability issues of such applications. Although under-resolved, the LES pressure profiles on the stator and rotor blades appear to be in good agreement with experimental data and are quite competitive compared to the traditional (Unsteady) Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS or URANS) modeling approach. Unsteady features inherently present in these LES underline the complexity of the flow in a turbine stage and clearly demand additional diagnostics to be properly validated.
Large Eddy Simulations for 3D Turbine Blades Using a High Order Flux Reconstruction Method

Abstract:During the last decades, the improvements of both computational ability and numerical schemes have stimulated increasing industrial interest in the use of Large Eddy Simulations (LES) for practical engineering flow problems. However, almost all current approches cannot treat complex geometries at affordable cost to enable LES of industrial problems. A robust, parallel and efficient solver using a general unstructured grid & based on high order flux reconstruction formulation, which uses local reconstruction, is compact and written in differential form without a mass matrix, was developed and has proved the ability to get accurate LES results but using RANS scale meshes. This work is aimed at using flux reconstruction method to perform Large Eddy Simulations for complex geometries in more robust and highly efficient way. Both explicit Runge-Kutta method and implicit LU-SGS method are implemented with improvements as solvers for better performance on boundary layer meshes including large aspect ratio cells. The current solver is ported to GPU architectures and speed up ratios of different order accuracy are presented in this work. A local reconstruction method is introduced to generate high order curved boundary from readily available first order meshes. The large eddy simulations for low pressure turbine blade and low pressure turbine blade with endwall are presented in this work, resolved with total number of degree of freedoms up to 34 million to chieve fourth order accuracy using limited computational resource. The results show that this approach has the potential to obtain LES results of real-geometry problems with affordable computational costs.
Preconditioning Method and Engineering Application of Large Eddy Simulation

Abstract:On applying large eddy simulation (LES) to engineering interest, one of the keys is to obtain two-order low-dissipation shock-capturing schemes adapted to LES. Therefore, the preconditioning method for all speed flows is adopted. However, the accuracy of preconditioned schemes is not satisfactory because of the poor performance of stability of preconditioning techniques especially in viscous flows. The reason of unstability is attributed to the unstability structure in the preconditioned eigenvalue matrix. Based on Roe scheme and two assumptions for low-Mach-Number flows, the new scheme named Low-Speed-Roe scheme is deduced for removing the unstability structure. Numerical experiments show that this scheme has the reasonable computational stability. For general-precision problems, Low-Speed-Roe scheme has similar behavior as the classical preconditioned Roe scheme. For simulations of high-accuracy requirement such as LES, Low-Speed-Roe scheme can obtain better results of complex flows, such as the laminar separation bubble on the suction surface of the high-loaded turbine blade T106.

Abstract:The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools for integrated simulations of gas turbine components has emerged as a promising way to predict undesired component interactions thereby giving access to potentially better engine designs and higher efficiency. In this context, the ever-increasing computational power available. worldwide makes it possible to envision integrated massively parallel combustion chamber-turbomachinery simulations based on Large-Eddy Simulations (LES). While LES have proven their superiority for combustor simulations, few studies have employed this approach in complete turbomachinery stages. The main reason for this is the known weaknesses Of near wall flow modeling in CFD. Two approaches exist: the wall-modeled LES, where wall flow physics is modeled by a law-of-the-wall, and the wall-resolved LES where all the relevant near wall physics is to be captured by the grid leading to massive computational cost increases. This work investigates the sensitivity of wall-modeled LES of a high-pressure turbine stage. The code employed, called TurboAVBP, is an in-house LES code capable of handling turbomachinery configurations. This is possible through an LES-compatible approach with the rotor/stator interface treated based on an overset moving grids method. It is designed to avoid any interference with the numerical scheme, allow the proper representation of turbulent structures crossing it and run on massively parallel platforms. The simulations focus on the engine-representative MT1 transonic high-pressure turbine, tested by QinetiQ. To control the computational cost, the configuration employed is composed of I scaled stator section and 2 rotors. The main issues investigated are the effect of mesh resolution and the effect of sub-grid scale models in conjunction with wall modeling. The pressure profiles across the stator and rotor blades are in good agreement with the experimental data for all cases. Radial profiles at the rotor exit (in the near and far field) show improvement over RANS predictions. Unsteady flow features, inherently present in LES, are, however, found to be affected by the modeling parameters as evidenced by the obtained shock strengths and structures or turbulence content of the different simulations.
Numerical Dissipation Effects on Detached Eddy Simulation of Turbomachinery Flows

Abstract:Detached eddy simulation (DES) is a high-resolution method for predicting complex unsteady flows in turbomachinery. Recent researches have shown that in DES the numerical dissipation from the spatial discretization scheme should be limited to a reasonable extent. Through the test-case of decaying isotropic turbulence, the impact of the Roe scheme is assessed with three reconstruction approaches: the 3rd-order MUSCL, the 5th-order WENO, and the 4th-order minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation (MDCD) scheme. From the results, however, even with the least dissipative 4th-order MDCD scheme, the Roe scheme possesses high numerical damping for the small-scale turbulent structures. To further decrease the dissipation, the Roe scheme is modified via an adaptive factor. This adaptive scheme has small dissipation in the LES region to capture multiscale turbulent structures and returns to the original Roe scheme near shock waves to suppress numerical oscillations. The scheme with adaptive dissipation is also used to calculate flows in a centrifugal compressor. The resolution of small vortex structures, such as the tip leakage vortices and the wake vortices, is well improved.
FAST HIGH ORDER LARGE EDDY SIMULATIONS ON MANY CORE COMPUTING SYSTEMS FOR TURBOMACHINERY

Abstract:The overall aim of our research is to enable overnight high fidelity LES for realistic industry problems on affordable computing resource. We have adopted a "3E" approach: high spatial discretization Efficiency on general unstructured meshes, high Efficiency accurate time integration and high computing Efficiency on modern low cost HPC hardware. Our approach is centered on high order Flux Reconstruction with local time stepping the STEFR algorithm [1]. In this paper, an offload-mode version of this code is described targeted at a heterogeneous many-core computing system based on low cost commodity hardware - Intel PHI cards. Three key techniques are introduced to achieve high FLOP rates - and optimal usage of non-equilibrium memory of both CPU and the many core co-processor - with three levels of parallelization, multi-level non equilibrium mesh partition and an asynchronous computing structure. A series of high order LES runs for a high lift low pressure turbine blade and a transonic turbine blade, with different order of accuracy, both fully wall-resolved and wall modelled, were performed, analyzed and presented. This work demonstrates that the high order STEFR method has the potential to support over-night LES for realistic industrial problems on affordable computing resource.
Analysis of Solid Particle Ingestion and Dynamics in a Turbomachine Using Large-Eddy Simulation

Abstract:Abstract Erosion of compressor and turbine blades operating in extreme environment fouled with sand particles, ash or soot is a serious problem for gas turbine manufacturers and users. Indeed, operation of a gas turbine engine in such hostile conditions leads to drastic degradation of the aerodynamic performance of the components, mostly through surface roughness modification, tip clearance height increase or blunting of blade leading edges. To evaluate associated risks, the computation of particle trajectories and impacts through multiple turbomachinery stages by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) seems a decent path but remains a challenge. The numerical prediction of complex turbulent flows in compressors and turbines is however necessary in such a context and validations are still required. Recently, Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) has shown promising results for compressor and turbine configurations for a wide range of operating conditions at an acceptable cost. With this in mind, this article presents the assessment of a LES solver able to treat turbomachine configurations to predict solid particle motion. To do so, the governing equations of particle dynamics are introduced using the Lagrangian formalism and are solved to compute locations and conditions of impact, namely particle velocity, angle and radius. The fully unsteady and coupled strategy is applied to blade geometries for studying the main areas and conditions of impacts obtained with LES. For comparison, a one-way coupling computation based on a mean steady flow field where only the Lagrangian particles are advanced in time is performed to evaluate the gain and drawbacks of both methods.

Abstract:Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) is recognized as a promising method for high-fidelity flow predictions in turbomachinery applications. The presented approach consists of the coupling of several instances of the same LES unstructured solver through an overset grid method. A high-order interpolation, implemented within this coupling method, is introduced and evaluated on several test cases. It is shown to be third order accurate, to preserve the accuracy of various second and third order convective schemes and to ensure the continuity of diffusive fluxes and subgrid scale tensors even in detrimental interface configurations. In this analysis, three types of spurious waves generated at the interface are identified. They are significantly reduced by the high-order interpolation at the interface. The latter having the same cost as the original lower order method, the high-order overset grid method appears as a promising alternative to be used in all the applications.
On The Implicit Large Eddy Simulation of Turbomachinery Flows Using The Flux Reconstruction Method

Abstract:A high-order flux reconstruction solver has been developed and validated to perform implicit large-eddy simulations of industrially representative turbomachinery flows. The T106c low-pressure turbine and VKI LS89 high-pressure turbine cases are studied. The solver uses the Rusanov Riemann solver to compute the inviscid fluxes on the wall boundaries, and HLLC or Roe to evaluate inviscid fluxes for internal faces. The impact of Riemann solvers is demonstrated in terms of accuracy and non-linear stability for turbomachinery flows. It is found that HLLC is more robust than Roe, but both Riemann solvers produce very similar results if stable solutions can be obtained. For non-linear stabilization, a local modal filter, which combines a smooth indicator and a modal filter, is used to stabilize the solution. This approach requires a tuning parameter for the smoothness criterion. Detailed analysis has been provided to guide the selection of a suitable value for different spatial orders of accuracy. This local-modal filter is also compared with the recent positivity-preserving entropy filter in terms of accuracy and stability for the LS89 turbine case. The entropy filter could stabilize the computation but is more dissipative than the local modal filter. Regarding the spanwise spacing of the grid, the case of the LS89 turbine shows that a $z^+$ of approximately $45 - 60$ is suitable for obtaining a satisfactory prediction of the heat transfer coefficient of the mean flow. This would allow for a coarse grid spacing in the spanwise direction and a cost-effective ILES aerothermal simulation for turbomachinery flows.

Abstract:A high accurate finite volume method of non-uniform meshes for large eddy simulation(LES) is presented in order to precisely predict complex incompressible turbulent flows.The filtered Navier-Stokes equation is solved numerically on non-staggered grids with a finite volume fourth-order-accurate compact scheme for spatial discretization and fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration for time advancement.The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the momentum interpolation method with a fourth-order-accurate compact scheme.The numerical simulations of a curved channel flow,a flow around a wing of NACA0012 section and a flow passage of a reversible pump-turbine runner are performed successfully by LES with a dynamic Smagroinsky model for subgrid stress and with immersed boundary method for nonslip boundray condition.The results are in good agreement with data in literatures.It is concluded that the proposed method has significant interests in application of LES in fluid machinery engineering.
Efficient and affordable high order, high fidelity Large Eddy Simulations for industrial level applications

For several years we have been developing a fast, high fidelity, high order Large Eddy Simulation system targeted at cheap, commodity, small scale, many-core computing clusters. Our objective is to deliver efficient & affordable application of LES to complex, multi-scale, real geometry, industrial class problems. Our technical approach is based on an innovative space time extention of a high order Flux Reconstruction method (STEFR) which allows time-accurate local time stepping. In this paper, two numerical investigations are presented: a transonic high Reynolds number NASA acoustic reference nozzle and a real geometry aircraft nose landing gear used in the BANC Workshops. These are presented together with computer resource statistics, aerodynamic and acoustic noise comparisions with experimental data and power spectrum density (PSD) plots. The Fflowcs William-Hawkings (FWH) integration is used for acoustic post-processing for the transonic nozzle case on a virtual structured surface mesh around jet flow. Additionally, this paper presents an innovative Hierarchical Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (HPOD) method which has been developed for data analysis in parallel, on-the-fly, and which extracts the most energetic modes by performing a two-level orthogonal projection as a Reduced Order Method. This has the potential to save post-processing memory requirement significantly for analysis of massive “big data” high order transient results.

Abstract:In this study, we aim to develop a robust and accurate Riemann solver to resolve strong shock waves with compact stencil information by applying the rotated hybrid concept to the RoeM scheme. The original RoeM scheme offers good robustness from the perspective of avoiding shock instability, also called the carbuncle phenomenon, in hypersonic flows by introducing Mach-number-based functions. These functions rely on multi-dimensional shock discontinuity sensing terms to capture grid-aligned shock waves, thus necessitating sharing of values of cells adjacent to each vertex. Consequently, constructing a data structure that can handle such a wide stencil is necessary, particularly for implementations on unstructured grids. Moreover, communication of this stencil information on parallel computation can increase computational costs. To overcome these complexities, the rotated hybrid concept is applied to the RoeM scheme, to replace the multi-dimensional terms while still resolving the grid-aligned shock instability. In addition, a Mach-number-based weighting function is introduced to distinguish between the flow around the boundary layer and the onset of shock instability. The damping characteristic of the proposed scheme is compared to that of the original RoeM scheme by conducting a linear perturbation analysis. The findings reveal that the proposed scheme effectively controls spurious oscillations across strong shock waves. Numerous test cases are presented to demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed approach. Notably, the proposed scheme successfully resolves thermal boundary layers and accurately predicts the heat transfer rate around stagnation points in hypersonic flows.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a computational method focused on the prediction of unsteady aerodynamics, adequate for industrial turbomachinery. Here we focus on a single rotor device selected from a new family of large tunnel ventilation axial flow fans. The flow field in the fan was simulated using the open source code OpenFOAM, with a large-eddy simulation (LES) approach. The sub-grid scale (SGS) closure relied on a one-equation model, that requires us to solve a differential transport equation for the modeled SGS turbulent kinetic energy. The use of such closure was here considered as a remedial strategy in LES of high-Reynolds industrial flows, being able to tackle the otherwise insufficient resolution of turbulence spectrum. The results show that LES of the fan allows to predict the pressure rise capability of the fan and to reproduce the most relevant flow features, such as three-dimensional separation and secondary flows.
Large-Eddy Simulation of Transitional Flows on a Compressor Blade

Abstract:Intricate turbulence physics is embedded in the compressor blade flows. It can include laminar separation at the leading edge, turbulence transition afterward and probably turbulent separation near the trailing edge when the blade is highly loaded. In this paper, large eddy simulation is performed on a typical CDA (controlled diffusion aerofoil) compressor blade at a positive incidence near the stall. An in-house LES solver using kinetic energy preserving scheme, named KEPLES, is employed and validated on the homogeneous decaying turbulence and cylinder flows at Re=3900 to show the capability of the low dissipative numerics and the subgrid stress(SGS) model for reliable eddy-resolving simulations. Then based on the validated methodology, the large eddy simulation is evaluated on the compressor blade flow predictions. The laminar-separation-induced transition is reasonably reproduced and the turbulent separation can be quantified by the eddy resolved simulation. Essential understandings are also obtained on the turbulence development around the blade. It will serve as a basic database for the improvement of both the blade profile and low-order prediction models in the future.

Abstract:Large-eddy simulations on unstructured meshes can be used to analyze complex turbulent flows in complex geometries such as in turbomachinery. The numerical dissipation must be reduced to enhance the simulation accuracy and fidelity. This paper describes a low-dissipation numerical scheme developed based on kinetic energy conservation that greatly enhances the numerical stability. Non-reflective boundary condition was developed as well. Simulations of five fundamental flows using this method show the clear advantages of this method over the upwind method in terms of numerical dissipation and computational efficiency.
