Abstract:In the paper, we provide an effective criterion for the Lipschitz equivalence of two-branch Cantor sets and three-branch Cantor sets by studying the irreducibility of polynomials. We also find that any two Cantor sets are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if their contraction vectors are equivalent provided one of the contraction vectors is homogeneous.

Abstract:We offer a new approach to the classical topological disk theorem of Reifenberg in the codimension-1 case. Our proof, using 1/2-level sets of the smoothing of the characteristic function of the domain Omega as approximating surfaces of partial derivative Omega, is much simpler than Reifenberg's original one (1960). We also extend the result to parabolic space.
A note on nonseparable Lipschitz-free spaces

Abstract:We prove that several classical Banach space properties are equivalent to separability for the class of Lipschitz-free spaces, including Corson's property ($\mathcal{C}$), Talponen's Countable Separation Property, or being a Gâteaux differentiability space. On the other hand, we single out more general properties where this equivalence fails. In particular, the question whether the duals of non-separable Lipschitz-free spaces have a weak$^*$ sequentially compact ball is undecidable in ZFC. Finally, we provide an example of a nonseparable dual Lipschitz-free space that fails the Radon-Nikodým property.

Abstract:This work introduces operator space analogues of the Separable Extension Property (SEP) for Banach spaces; the Complete Separable Extension Property (CSEP) and the Complete Separable Complemention Property (CSCP). The results use the technique of a new proof of Sobczyk's Theorem, which also yields new results for the SEP in the non-separable situation, e.g., $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty Z_n)_{c_0}$ has the $(2+\ep)$-SEP for all $\ep>0$ if $Z_1,Z_2,...$ have the 1-SEP; in particular, $c_0 (\ell^\infty)$ has the SEP. It is proved that e.g., $c_0(\bR\oplus\bC)$ has the CSEP (where $\bR$, $\bC$ denote Row, Column space respectively) as a consequence of the general principle: if $Z_1,Z_2,...$ is a uniformly exact sequence of injective operator spaces, then $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty Z_n)_{c_0}$ has the CSEP. Similarly, e.g., $\bK_0 \defeq (\oplus_{n=1}^\infty M_n)_{c_0}$ has the CSCP, due to the general principle: $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty Z_n)_{c_0}$ has the CSCP if $Z_1,Z_2,...$ are injective separable operator spaces. Further structural results are obtained for these properties, and several open problems and conjectures are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that a non-locally compact paratopological group G has a remainder which is a p-space if and only if G is either a Lindelof p-space or a sigma-compact space. We show that if G is a non-locally compact paratopological group with a compactification bG such that the remainder bG \ G is locally metrizable, then both G and bG are separable and metrizable. It is proved that if G is a cosmic paratopological group with a paracompact remainder, then G is separable and metrizable.

Abstract:In this paper, we firstly discuss the question: Is $l_{2}^{\infty}$ homeomorphic to a rectifiable space or a paratopological group? And then, we mainly discuss locally compact rectifiable spaces, and show that a locally compact and separable rectifiable space is $\sigma$-compact, which gives an affirmative answer to A.V. Arhangel'skiǐ and M.M. Choban's question [On remainders of rectifiable spaces, Topology Appl., 157(2010), 789-799]. Next, we show that a rectifiable space $X$ is strongly Fr$\acute{e}$chet-Urysohn if and only if $X$ is an $\alpha_{4}$-sequential space. Moreover, we discuss the metrizabilities of rectifiable spaces, which gives a partial answer for a question posed in \cite{LFC2009}. Finally, we consider the remainders of rectifiable spaces, which improve some results in \cite{A2005, A2007, A2009, Liu2009}.

Abstract:A space $X$ is sequentially separable if there is a countable $S\subset X$ such that every point of $X$ is the limit of a sequence of points from $S$. In 2004, N.V. Velichko defined and investigated concepts close to sequentially separability: $\sigma$-separability and $F$-separability. The aim of this paper is to study $\sigma$-separability and $F$-separability (and their hereditary variants) of the space $C_p(X)$ of all real-valued continuous functions, defined on a Tychonoff space $X$, endowed with the pointwise convergence topology. In particular, we proved that $\sigma$-separability coincides with sequential separability. Hereditary variants (hereditarily $\sigma$-separablity and hereditarily $F$-separablity) coincides with Frechet-Urysohn property in the class of cosmic spaces.

Abstract:For a Hausdorff space $Y$, a topological space $X$ and a map $g:X\to Y$, we present a connection between the relative sectional number of the first coordinate projection $\pi_{2,1}^Y:F(Y,2)\to Y$ with respect to $g$, and the coincidence property (CP) for $(X,Y;g)$, where $(X,Y;g)$ has the coincidence property (CP) if, for every map $f:X\to Y$, there is a point $x$ of $X$ such that $f(x)=g(x)$. Explicitly, we demonstrate that $(X,Y;g)$ has the CP if and only if 2 is the minimal cardinality of open covers $\{U_i\}$ of $X$ such that each $U_i$ admits a local lifting for $g$ with respect to $\pi_{2,1}^Y$. This characterisation connects a standard problem in coincidence theory to current research trends in sectional category and topological robotics. Motivated by this connection, we introduce the notion of relative topological complexity of a map.

Separation properties for positive-definite functions on locally compact quantum groups and for associated von Neumann algebras

Abstract:Using Godement mean on the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact quantum group we obtain strong separation results for quantum positive-definite functions associated to a subclass of representations, strengthening for example the known relationship between amenability of a discrete quantum group and existence of a net of finitely supported quantum positive-definite functions converging pointwise to $I$. We apply these results to show that von Neumann algebras of unimodular discrete quantum groups enjoy a strong form of non-$w^*$-CPAP, which we call the matrix $\epsilon$-separation property.

Abstract:In this paper,we show that if a rectifiable space G is a locally Lindel(o)f ∑-space,then G is strongly paracompact,which improves a result given by Lin-Zhang-Zhang [Topology Appl.,2015,193:182-191].We prove that if a rectifiable space G has a compactification bG such that bG \ G is a locally σ-space,then G is either locally compact or separable and metrizable,which generalizes a result obtained by Arhangel'skii-Choban [Topology Appl.,2010,157(4):789-799].We also show that if a non-locally compact k-gentle paratopological group G has a compactification bG such that bG \ G has locally a Gδ-diagonal,then either G is a σcompact cosmic space,or bG is separable and metrizable,which generalizes two results given by Arhangel'skii [Topology Appl.,2007,154(6):1084-1088] and Liu [Topology Appl.,2009,156(5):849-854].
Lipschitz decompositions of domains with bilaterally flat boundaries

Abstract:We study classes of domains in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1},\ d \geq 2$ with sufficiently flat boundaries which admit a decomposition or covering of bounded overlap by Lipschitz graph domains with controlled total surface area. This study is motivated by the following result proved by Peter Jones as a piece of his proof of the Analyst's Traveling Salesman Theorem in the complex plane: Any simply connected domain $\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{C}$ with finite boundary length $\mathcal{H}^1(\partial\Omega)$ can be decomposed into Lipschitz graph domains with total boundary length bounded above by $M\mathcal{H}^1(\partial\Omega)$ for some $M$ independent of $\Omega$. In this paper, we prove an analogous Lipschitz decomposition result in higher dimensions for domains with Reifenberg flat boundaries satisfying a uniform beta-squared sum bound. We use similar techniques to show that domains with general Reifenberg flat or uniformly rectifiable boundaries admit similar Lipschitz decompositions while allowing the constituent domains to have bounded overlaps rather than be disjoint.

Abstract:Let $X=G/H$ be a reductive homogeneous space with $H$ noncompact, endowed with a $G$-invariant pseudo-Riemannian structure. Let $L$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$ acting properly on $X$ and $\Gamma$ a torsion-free discrete subgroup of $L$. Under the assumption that the complexification $X_{\mathbb C}$ is $L_{\mathbb C}$-spherical, we prove an explicit correspondence between spectral analysis on the standard locally homogeneous space $X_{\Gamma}=\Gamma\backslash X$ and on $\Gamma\backslash L$ via branching laws for the restriction to $L$ of irreducible representations of $G$. In particular, we prove that the pseudo-Riemannian Laplacian on $X_{\Gamma}$ is essentially self-adjoint, and that it admits an infinite point spectrum when $X_{\Gamma}$ is compact or $\Gamma\subset L$ is arithmetic. The proof builds on structural results for invariant differential operators on spherical homogeneous spaces with overgroups.

Abstract:A problem of Erdős (Amer. Math. Monthly 52: 494-498, 1945) and a theorem of Fejes Tóth and Fejes Tóth (Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hungar. 24: 229-232, 1973) initiated the study of non-separable arrangements of convex bodies and the investigation of totally separable packings of convex bodies with both topics analyzing the concept of separability from the point view of discrete geometry. This article surveys the progress made on these and some closely related problems and highlights the relevant questions that have been left open.

Abstract:We answer the question asked by Louder, McReynolds and Patel, and prove the following statement. Let L be a RAAG, H a word quasiconvex subgroup of L, then there is a finite dimensional representation of L that separates the subgroup H in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate H in L. This implies the same statement for a virtually special group L and, in particular, a fundamental groups of a hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:We study a variant of extremal disconnectedness in frames, defined by requiring that any two disjoint open sublocales should be separable by disjoint open sublocales each of which is the interior of some zero-sublocale. In spaces, this notion was recently introduced in [1] in order to study some properties of frames of z -ideals of rings of continuous functions. The point-free approach adopted here brings to the fore some topological results not considered in [1], such as that a dense z -embedded subspace of a Tychonoff space has this property if and only if the space containing it has the property. In [1], this was proved only for the embedding X ⊆ βX . We give a ring-theoretic characterization by defining a property of f -rings in a transparent manner which shows why the property should be defined the way we do. The property is that if two annihilator ideals meet trivially, then the annihilator of each of the annihilator ideals contains a positive element such that the sum of the two elements is a non-zerodivisor.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a directed set and $X$ a space. A collection $\mathcal{C}$ of subsets of $X$ is \emph{$P$-locally finite} if $\mathcal{C}=\bigcup \{ \mathcal{C}_p : p \in P\}$ where (i) if $p \le p'$ then $\mathcal{C}_p \subseteq \mathcal{C}_{p'}$ and (ii) each $\mathcal{C}_p$ is locally finite. Then $X$ is \emph{$P$-paracompact} if every open cover has a $P$-locally finite open refinement. Further, $X$ is \emph{$P$-metrizable} if it has a $(P \times \mathbb{N})$-locally finite base. This work provides the first detailed study of $P$-paracompact and $P$-metrizable spaces, particularly in the case when $P$ is a $\mathcal{K}(M)$, the set of all compact subsets of a separable metrizable space $M$ ordered by set inclusion.

Abstract:We show that the existing generalized separation statements including the conventional extremal principle and its extensions differ {in the ways norms on product spaces are defined}. We prove a general separation statement with arbitrary product norms covering the existing results of this kind. The proof is divided into a series of claims and exposes the key steps and arguments used when proving generalized separation statements. As an application, we prove dual necessary (sufficient) conditions for an abstract product norm extension of the approximate stationarity (transversality) property.
