Abstract:The paper highlights the translation works and the prominent figures of the Jesuit mission in the two-century period which is divided into five sub-periods indicated by symbolic events rather than the transition from one dynasty to another.In 1687 the first contingent of French Jesuits arrived in China,marking a watershed in the Jesuit mission in China between the 16 th and 18 th century.From that year on,the French Jesuits began to play a domineering role in the scientific translation and dissemination in China,which had a profound impact on the cultural and scientific exchanges between China and the West.

Abstract:In 1900, as the Boxer Uprising raged in China, two Chinese translations of the work Histoire de l'Eglise de Corée (Gaoli zhiming shilüe and Gaoli zhuzheng) were published to encourage Chinese Catholics, given the difficult history of persecutions faced by Korean Catholics. A close examination of these translations, along with the translator of Gaoli zhiming shilüe's earlier work on the history of Korean martyrs, reveals that they relied on different Korean source texts and even embellished the original narrative in places. These modifications, in turn, demonstrate the complex chain of translation and information within East Asian missions, working between several languages and incorporating a variety of sources for information. In particular, a study of these texts highlights connections between the Catholic mission in Shanghai and Korea throughout a period when both faced intense opposition and the latter outright suppression. Abstract:By the early 18th Century, the “Rites Controversy” among the missionaries themselves has evolved into a culture conflict between the Qing Empire and Europe. To make the European missionaries in China follow the rites of Matteo Ricci, Emperor Kangxi had French Jesuit missionaries Joachim Bouvet and Jean Francoise Foucquet study the Book of Changes in his royal palace and had further conversions with the European missionaries based on their researches. Not only did this cultural conversation reveal the Figurist’s tendencies, as represented by Bouvet, and the interior conflict among the missionaries themselves after the “Rites controversy,” but also showed Kangxi’s policies towards the missionaries, as well as his attitude towards Western culture and religion.

Abstract:In modern China, with the signing of a series of unequal treaties, there were constant disputes between Catholicism and Protestantism in order to fight for missionary authority, missionary regions and discourse power. As a modern Catholic Chinese Jesuit, Li Wenyu(1840-1911) had written many works on the relationship between the two denominations to defend for Catholicism. In the terms of the content, most of the works are the continuation of the sectarian argument triggered by the Reformation, concentrating mainly on the discussion of doctrines, rituals, the Bible and so on. However, few researches are concerned about new missionary issues such as Missionary cases or a type of inseparable connection between missionaries and Western Powers and they are just a kind of passive response to other people's queries. In the way of Apologetics methods, he once used traditional Chinese culture to explain the doctrines of Catholicism whereas it only occupied a little part. On most occasions, he interpreted doctrines through the Bible directly. By reviewing the relevant works of him, it can be seen that the modern Chinese Catholicism represented by Li Wenyu paid more attention to the enmities caused by differences in beliefs or doctrines instead of new problems arose in missionary work.

Abstract:The article analyzes the role of authority in the Jesuit modus operandi in China in the early modern period as it can be deduced from the works of Tomasz Szpot Dunin SJ (1644–1713), in particular from his Historiae Sinarum Imperii (ARSI, Jap. Sin 102; Jap. Sin. 103) and Collectanea Historiae Sinensis (ARSI, Jap. Sin 104; Jap. Sin. 105 I; Jap. Sin. 105 II). The manuscripts contain a detailed description of the Jesuit method of working in a very challenging cultural and political environment in which the question of authority played a predominant role. For Matteo Ricci and his followers, the goal of their missionary work was to plant Christianity in China, but it could have been done only by everyday efforts to win the acceptance of the court and of the wider circles of the Chinese society. The article enumerates and discusses the seven dimensions of Jesuit authority which are broadly divided into two types, namely, the secular authority (auctoritas profana) and the sacred authority (auctoritas sacra). The former found its expression primarily in a proper dress code and grooming, dignified posture, solemn facial expression and impeccable social manners. These were combined with limited use of physical force for self-defence and willingness to offer their military expertise when deemed necessary to promote the missionary goals. Furthermore, the Jesuits lived a virtuous life combined with charity manifested towards the poor, especially in time of natural disasters and social unrest. However, the authority they exercised among the Confucian mandarinate was based on their distinguished literary skills, remarkable command of Chinese and practical understanding of international diplomacy which enabled them to serve as cultural and political brokers. Finally, the Jesuit exercised the form of authority which was divinely mandated as they were the teachers of the Divine Law (Magistri Legis Divinae), which, for the Chinese Emperors, who were regarded as the Sons of Heaven (Tianzi or Huangdi) was tantamount to the knowledge of astronomy.

Abstract:In 1605,a Kaifeng Jew,Ai Tian met with Ricci in Beijing,and Ricci sent a messenger to Kaifeng for research.Subsequently the Jesuits Giulio Aleni and Niccolo Longobardi followed,they were convinced in the naturalization of Jews in Kaifeng.The very person that accomplished the long-cherished wish of the naturalization of Jews in Kaifeng was an Italian Jesuit Francois Sambiasi,succeeded by the Portuguese Jesuit Rodrigo de Figueiredo and the Austrian Jesuit Christian Herdtricht and so on.The Portuguese Jesuit Jean-Paul Gozani,France Jesuit Jean Domenge and Antoine Gaubil were the ones that completed the systematic investigation about ancient Judaism and classics of Kaifeng Jews and wrote the most valuable writings in the early Qing Dynasty.The pursuit of the Jesuits to find the ancient Judaism and classics of Kaifeng Jews in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties was their missionary activities in China to find ways to improve their own authoritative basis.

Abstract:The encounter between Jesuits and Chinese literati was decisive for the cultural evolution of China and Europe. What happened at that time can be valuable for contemporary cultural and spiritual encounters. Therefore, the archaeology of sinology helps us to explore reflectively how our current research efforts fit into the dialogical construction of a global community. In the history of Sinology, the dialogue between Jesuits and Chinese literati is a major historical milestone and the dialogical effort established during this first formative period of Sinology can inspire new dialogues in various communities. Dialogue appears within, but also, and most importantly, defines a community environment; it allows for connecting different environments in a new space of conversation through the continual transformation of their linguistic rules.

Abstract:This article clarifies the often overlooked facts attributed to European missionaries in Asia, especially Jesuits, who acted as catalysts of a kind of nuanced acculturation named Accommodatio (adaptation). To a great extent, they became harbingers of culture and science more than faith itself to the dismay of many, including the Roman Church. Such cultural and scientific transference was actually two-pronged, for simultaneously they presented in Europe unique findings related to language, e.g., the Chinese characters (considered to be the sole natural language), geography, cosmology and even governance. Here we try to prove that such procedure contributed positively to the modern scientific notions of sustainability and to provide the kind of accoutrements that model the modern world as we know it. However, in the process, many Jesuits clearly became sinified and eventually acculturated.

The introduced contents had not only exerted far-reaching influences in the fields of ideas, science, technology and education, but also started the second tide of "Western Science into Oriental World" in late Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:This article explores the interactions between the Taizhou school and Jesuit missionaries during the late Ming dynasty. It reveals the intellectual exchanges between these influential groups in fields such as philosophy and religion and their significance in spreading Western knowledge to the East. The article begins by introducing the complete process of exchanges between Taizhou school representatives like Jiao Hong, Li Zhi, Zhu Shilu, Tang Xianzu, Xu Guangqi, and Jesuit missionaries including Matteo Ricci. It delves into how these interactions influenced the development of their respective thoughts and academic theories. The exchange between the two groups was not a perfect fusion and was filled with contradictions, conflicts, and struggles, particularly on issues such as human nature and cosmology. By studying this process of exchange, we can understand how the intellectual elite of late Ming China accepted and reflected upon Western thought. It also reveals how Western intellectuals used this exchange to comprehend and appreciate Chinese philosophy and culture.

Abstract:In 1927, the Jesuit-run Bureau of Sinology was founded in Shanghai to assist missionaries in their apostolic work via education and publications. The bureau's establishment was part of a longstanding effort to resume the Jesuit tradition of developing intellectual apostolate and pursuing Sinological studies. However, the bureau was soon beset by internal crises that limited its functionality. The bureau also competed with the Synodal Commission, which Celso Costantini (1876–1958), the first apostolic delegate to China, had established in the same year and with a similar objective. The ecclesiastical hierarchy and overlapping purposes of the two institutes disadvantaged the bureau in its early development and escalated tensions between the Jesuits in China and the delegate. Abstract:This historiographical study examines the Russian Orthodox Mission in Beijing from 1715 to 1956, revealing its historical impact on Christianity in China and Sino–Russian cultural exchanges. The research explores how the Mission functioned not only as a religious entity but also influenced diplomatic ties and scholarly pursuits, as documented in both Chinese and Russian historiographies. This study utilizes contemporary sources, exploring Chinese narratives to re-evaluate historical perspectives, and portrays the Mission as a critical mediator in Sino–Russian relations. An examination of the historical context shows that the Mission has undergone a transformation over time. It has evolved from an influential ecclesiastical presence to a cultural and diplomatic agency unobtrusively entered into Chinese society. From the mid-18th to the early 20th century, the Mission adapted to the local environment by combining the transmission of religious doctrine with engagement in China's political and cultural contexts. The article proposes a holistic interpretation of the Mission's function, encompassing not only evangelism but also diplomatic engagements, and adding to the multifaceted discourse within Chinese cultural heritage. In summary, the article recommends exploring the enduring impact and historical complexities of the Russian Orthodox Mission as it is grounded in a broader framework of global movements. The research suggests that it may be beneficial to broaden the scope of historiographic narratives to encompass a diverse range of interdisciplinary studies that reflect the complexity of the Mission's enduring impact and its role in shaping a shared global history.

Abstract:In the 19th century,most missionaries in China held an uncompromising stance with regard to Chinese culture,intending to replace local beliefs,ethics and values with Christian civilization,i.e.to make a cultural conquest of China.However,from the early 20th century on,under the impact of the conflict of rationalism and nationalism and of World War I,mainstream missionary organizations began to promote cultural cooperation and show a deep respect for and appreciation of Chinese culture.They put forward a series of important ideas,including the idea that Christianity should work together with other religions "in joint pursuit of the truth" and that the Chinese cultural heritage should be used to complement and enrich Christian tradition.This intellectual change transformed the missionary movement.

Abstract:With the publication and circulation of The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven by Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) since the late Ming Dynasty, related criticisms abound. On the whole, the accusations against this book are no more than three: invoking backward medieval theosophy and science, misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the indigenous Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and a missionary hermeneutics in the style of "for my own use". This article is a response to Prof. XIE Wenyu's article on The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven. The article responds to each of the points in Prof. Xie Wenyu's article from ten aspects. The article argues that Matteo Ricci and The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven played a positive role in the cultural exchanges between China and the West and the development of Confucianism in the late Ming Dynasty. If this role is not considered to be significant, the reason lies not in Matteo Ricci himself, but in Confucianism itself.

Abstract:The Confucius Sinarum Philosophus (1687) resulted from Jesuit research into Chinese classical texts. Upon its publication, the work conformed to the Jesuits' accommodationist policy, facing challenges over its orthodoxy from both China and the West. The Latin translation and commentary on Analects 2.16 mirror these challenges and the Jesuit rebuttal. Compared to earlier translations, this version adheres more closely to traditional Chinese exegesis and participates actively in historical debates over orthodoxy. The annotations also delineate the heterodox teachings of the Yang (楊), Mo (墨), Daoist, and Buddhist schools, juxtaposing them with Confucianism, which they portray as a natural law to be perfected. The inclusion of these four heterodoxies introduces a novel aspect to Christian heresiology, while the portrayal of Confucianism assimilates it into the Christian orthodox framework. This article contends that the translation and commentary exemplify the Jesuits' efforts to establish orthodoxy within both Chinese and Western contexts.

Abstract:The Jesuits introduced European sciences to China from 1580. At the time, China was an autarkic civilization whose intelligentsia was dominated by Confucian literati. By making use of this knowledge supply shock, this paper examines the importance of knowledge diffusion in the production of new knowledge. Based on prefecture-level data on the distribution of the Jesuits and of Chinese scientific publications, this paper documents that the Jesuits stimulated scientific publications by Confucian literati. But this effect shrank after the Jesuits were expelled by the emperor of China in 1723.

Abstract:Abstract French Jesuit Joseph Prémare, a missionary to Qing Dynasty China, had completed by the end of 1728 the draft of a book entitled Notitia linguæ sinicæ, intended to assist aspiring Catholic missionaries from Europe in learning the Chinese language. One of the original manuscripts sent from Canton to Paris, now held in the Bibliothæque nationale de France in Paris, was rediscovered in the 1810s by the French sinologist Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat, and became the source for some manuscript copies, made mostly before the work’s eventual publication in 1831. This paper examines two of these manuscript copies dated between 1825 and 1830, held respectively in the Archive of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and the the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, both important in their own ways, and both somewhat misunderstood and largely neglected by recent studies.
