Abstract:Flame extinction is an important phenomenon to consider when designing combustion devices with high levels of turbulence. In general, high turbulence increases the flame surface area and the rate of diffusive mixing, allowing for smaller combustion chambers and higher heat release rates. However, if mixing rates exceed chemical reaction rates, heat and important radicals can be transported away from the reaction zone resulting in local extinction [1]. The result of local extinction is the production of “flame holes”, which potentially allow unburned fuel to escape, increasing hydrocarbon emissions as well as decreasing combustion efficiency. If extinction rates are high enough, flame instabilities or even global extinction can occur, an undesirable situation for any combustion system. While gaseous flame extinction is already complex, the introduction of liquid fuel creates additional difficulties. As a result extinctions in spray flames have not been studied in the same detail as those in gaseous flames. An improved understanding of spray flame extinction is of prime importance to optimise performance of practical combustion devices and develop predictive spray combustion models.

Abstract:Using a counterflow burner and a stagnation flow burner with a water-cooled wall, theeffect of downstream heat loss on the extinction of a stretched premixed flame has been systematically investigated for lean and rich propane/air and methane/air mixtures. Based on results of the concentration limits and flame separation distances at extinction, it is demonstrated that, in accordance with theoretical predictions, extinction by stretch alone is possible only when the deficient reactant is the less mobile one. When it is the more mobile one, downstream heat loss or incomplete reaction is also needed to achieve extinction. A variety of non-steady, non-planar flame configurations, including cellular flames, starshapedflames, groove-shaped flames, and vibrating flames, have been observed. Their response to concentration and flow field variations has been mapped and the possible controlling mechanisms discussed. Minimum and maximum fuel concentration limits of extinction have also been identifiedand discussed on the basis of flammability limits.

Abstract:The response of near-flammability-limit, weakly burning, counterflow premixed flames as a function of stretch rate has been studied computationally with detailed chemistry and transport properties. The limit mechanisms and extinction phenomena are found to be strongly influenced by the combined effects of flame stretch, mixture non-equidiffusion, and radiative loss. For subunity Lewis number flames such as those of lean methane/air, the combined effects of mixture non-equidiffusion and positive stretch elevate the combustion intensity such that steady burning persists beyond the fundamental flammability limit defined for the one-dimensional planar flame. Furthermore, die flame response to stretch rate variations exhibits a dual-extinction turning-point behavior in that flame extinction occurs not only for sufficiently large stretch rates and minimal radiative heat loss, but also for sufficiently small stretch rates and relatively substantial heat loss. Consequently, for a given mixture strength, steady combustion is possible only within a finite range of the stretch rate. This range steadily diminishes with decreasing mixture strength such that there exists a critical equivalence ratio, the extended flammability limit, beyond which steady burning for the stretch-enhanced flame also ceases to be possible. For lean propane/air flames. however er, the mixture Lewis numbers are greater than unity such that the combined stretch and non-equidiffusion effects always diminish the burning intensity. Consequently, the transition from stretch-dominated extinction to loss-dominated extinction is monotonic in terms of the equivalence ratio, and the fundamental flammability limit is the proper flammability limit. The present results agree well with the recent experimental observations of near-limit, lean methane/air and propane/air flames, obtained under microgravity conditions needed to eliminate the influence of buoyancy, which could severely affect the response of these weakly burning flames. Implications of the present understanding on the experimental determination of flammability; limits using the counterflow flame technique are also discussed.

Abstract:The extinction of laminar premixed flames by stretch and radiative loss is studied for the model problem of counterflow opposed-jet combustion by using the matched asymptotic expansion technique for the highly temperature sensitive processes of radiative heat loss and large-activation-energy reaction kinetics. Explicit expressions for the critical Damköhler number at extinction are derived and the influence of upstream vs downstream heat losses assessed. Results show that stretch exerts a much stronger influence than radiative loss on flame extinction.

Abstract:By using the symmetrical counterflow flame configuration and LDV mapping of the velocity profile, we have accurately determined for methane/air and propane/air mixtures their flame speeds as a function of the equivalence ratio and stretch, as well as the stretch rates and the associated flame speeds at the state of extinction. These data are expected to be quantitatively useful for the modeling of more complex flame and combustor phenomena. Results further show that for these mixtures the flame speed mostly increases linearly with increasing stretch, that the flame speed is finite at the state of extinction, and that the extinction limits for nearly adiabatic, stretchless, and planar flames appear to correspond to the flammability limits of the respective mixtures. Implications of the present results on the concept of flammability limits are also discussed.

Abstract:The extinction limit of laminar lean premixed stretched H-2-CO-air flames was investigated with particular attention to the chemical kinetic characteristics under near-limit conditions. The extinction stretch rates were determined by the digital particle image velocimetry measurement using the Counterflow Twin-Flame method. Corresponding numerical simulations were conducted using CHEMKIN II with detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms. The simulation results generally agreed well with the experimental data. It was found that increasing H-2 ratio restrained the flame from being extinguished, and this restraining effect was more profound low H-2 ratios. Further analyses of the flame speed, temperature and elementary reaction sensitivities revealed that H-2 addition played a crucial role in flame extinction by changing the competition between chain branching and termination reactions. To quantitatively measure the kinetic effect of H-2 addition, a dimensionless extinction exponent (beta) defined as the ratio between the relative sensitivities of termination (omega(T)) and branching (omega(B)) reaction rates, i.e., beta = partial derivative ln omega(T)/partial derivative ln omega(B), was proposed. For a given syngas, beta rapidly increased to a certain constant, defined as the critical extinction exponent, when the flame extinction was approached, despite variations in the stretch rate and changes in the loss mechanism. The chemical kinetic characteristics and loss mechanism jointly determined the extinction limit of lean premixed H-2-CO-air flames. (C) 2016 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:Recent advances in the understanding of the structure, propagation, and extinction of laminar flames under the influence of stretch, as manifested by the existence of flame curvature, flow nonuniformity, and flame motion, are reviewed. The emphasis is on premixed flames because of the richness and subtlety of the phenomena involved. The review distinguishes the influences of the tangential and normal velocity gradients on the flame response, both at the hydrodynamic scale and within the flame structure, and emphasizes the importance of the preferential diffusion nature of heat and mass transport, as well as the extent to which the flame can freely adjust its location in response to stretch in order to achieve complete reaction. It is then demonstrated that stretch has only minimal effect on an adiabatic, unrestrained, diffusionally-neutral flame with complete reaction in that the temperature, propagation rate, and thickness of the flame are invariant to stretch, and that stretch alone cannot extinguish such a flame. In the presence of preferential diffusion and/or when the flame movement is restrained, the response of the flame to stretch becomes more sensitive and extinction is also possible. The concept of flame stretch is applied to interpret such practical flame phenomena as flame stabilization and flame-front instability, determination of laminar flame speeds and flammability limits, concentration and temperature modifications in flame chemistry, and modeling of turbulent flames. The properties of stretched diffusion flames are then briefly discussed. The review closes with suggestions for further research.

Abstract:The extinction stretch/strain rate is an important global parameter for validating kinetics and modeling laminar and turbulent flame extinctions. Here, we propose a generalized approach to extrapolate the ex-tinction stretch rate from spherically expanding flames, based on the nonlinear relation between the flame speed and the stretch rate applicable to general Lewis numbers (Le's). Results show that the extinction events for Le < 1, lean hydrogen/air flames can only be obtained by considering finite flame thickness, indicating the importance of finite, incomplete reaction in the extinction of such flames. On the other hand, both the previous nonlinear formulation with complete reaction and the present finite flame thickness descriptions can predict extinction for the Le > 1, rich hydrogen/air flames, for which the extinction mechanism is that of preferential diffusion. The effects of equivalence ratio and pressure have also been examined and explained, which highlight the essential role of proper definitions in explaining the extinction stretch rate responses. The present generalized description is particularly useful for the investigations of flame extinction and chemistry at elevated pressures within internal combustion engines.& COPY; 2022 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:In order to further understand the general structure and extinction characteristics of diffusion and premixed flames in the presence of heat loss, and their dependence on the relative rates of reaction, transport, and loss, the heterogeneous combustion with surface radiative heat loss from either a bipropellant in an oxidizing counterflow or a monopropellant in an inert counterflow have been studied via activation energy asymptotics. The analysis yields solutions for the flame temperature, mass burning rate, and flamefront standoff distance. The structure equations for the reaction zone of both the diffusion flame and the premixed flame with subadiabatic downstream boundary are, respectively, found to be canonically identical to the near-equilibrium and premixed flame regimes of Linan's generalized analysis of the diffusion flame structure. The actual flame response to stretch rate variations, however, exhibits a dual extinction turning point behavior in that flame extinction occurs not only for sufficiently large stretch rates and minimal radiative heat loss, but also for sufficiently small stretch rates and extensive heat loss. Consequently, there exist systems for which steady combustion is not possible for all stretch rates. For the premixed flame with adiabatic downstream boundary, extinction occurs only for situations with small stretch rates and extensive heat loss.

Abstract:The nonlinear response of stretched premixed dames was studied analytically and computationally, with emphasis on the turning point behavior associated with flame extinction. Extending our previous study of the weakly stretched flames exhibiting linear responses, expressions for the nonlinear flame response were derived by using an integral method. For adiabatic flames, the extinction stretch rates were determined by using the global flame parameters extracted from the linear flame response. The predicted flame responses were then compared with computed results for counterflow and inwardly propagating spherical flames, and reasonably good agreements were obtained. The agreement was further improved by taking into account the increase of the effective activation energy with decreasing flame temperature as the flame approaches the extinction state. For nonadiabatic flames, the effect of volumetric heat loss was investigated via the one-dimensional planar flame subject to radiation loss, while the effect of conductive loss was studied via the counterflow flame against an isothermal wall. The formulation holds potential utility in predicting quantitatively accurate flame responses and in its implementation in the modeling of turbulent combustion. (C) 2000 by The Combustion Institute.

Abstract:Flame configurations, flame-front cellular instability, and extinction of propane/air mixtures in the stagnation-point flow are experimentally studied for their dependence on downstream heat loss, preferential diffusion, and flame stretch. Boundaries for lean- and rich-limit extinction, stabilization of corrugated flames, and local extinction caused by sharp curvatures are mapped for varying propane concentrations and freestream velocities. Flame location and temperature at extinction are determined as functions of stagnation surface temperature, extent of preheating, propane concentration, and freestream velocity.
Extinction Of Inwardly-Propagating Spherical Flames

Abstract:The extinction mechanism of negatively-stretched flames was investigated via a computational study on the inwardly-propagating spherical flame. Two sets of calculation were performed for lean and rich H-2/air with detailed chemistry and transport properties. The first set simulates flame propagation in the flame coordinate, which has been often adopted in theoretical analysis because it allows for the assumption of quasi-steadiness, The second set is in the laboratory coordinate, for which the transient nature of flame propagation is retained. Our results show that for lean H-2/air (Le < 1) flames, the burning intensity is progressively decreased as the flame propagates inward, and the flame is eventually extinguished at a certain finite radius. The extinction is therefore stretch-induce. For rich H-2/air flames (Le > 1), the burning intensity is enhanced by stretch and the eventual extinction is caused by reactant depletion. Regarding the simulations on the two different coordinate systems, it is shown that the burning intensity obtained from the flame coordinate calculation agrees quite well with those from the laboratory coordinate when the flame radius is large, indicating the adequacy of quasi-steady assumption in the case of mild flame curvature. However, it gives lower burning intensities for small flame radii, especially when the flame is near extinction. Accordingly, it yields higher extinction radius for a Le < 1 flame.

Abstract:Premixed counterflow flames with thermally sensitive intermediate kinetics and radiation heat loss are analysed within the framework of large activation energy. Unlike previous studies considering one-step global reaction, two-step chemistry consisting of a chain branching reaction and a recombination reaction is considered here. The correlation between the flame front location and stretch rate is derived. Based on this correlation, the extinction limit and bifurcation characteristics of the strained premixed flame are studied, and the effects of fuel and radical Lewis numbers as well as radiation heat loss are examined. Different flame regimes and their extinction characteristics can be predicted by the present theory. It is found that fuel Lewis number affects the flame bifurcation qualitatively and quantitatively, whereas radical Lewis number only has a quantitative influence. Stretch rates at the stretch and radiation extinction limits respectively decrease and increase with fuel Lewis number before the flammability limit is reached, while the radical Lewis number shows the opposite tendency. In addition, the relation between the standard flammability limit and the limit derived from the strained near stagnation flame is affected by the fuel Lewis number, but not by the radical Lewis number. Meanwhile, the flammability limit increases with decreased fuel Lewis number, but with increased radical Lewis number. Radical behaviours at flame front corresponding to flame bifurcation and extinction are also analysed in this work. It is shown that radical concentration at the flame front, under extinction stretch rate condition, increases with radical Lewis number but decreases with fuel Lewis number. It decreases with increased radiation loss.

Abstract:Extinction studies of weakly-stretched near-limit lean premixed syngas/air flames were conducted in a twin-flame counterflow configuration. Experiments showed that buoyancy-induced natural convection at normal gravity strongly disturbed these flames. In order to validate the simulation, accurate extinction data was obtained at micro-gravity. Experimental data obtained from the 3.6 s micro-gravity drop tower showed that the extinction equivalence ratio increased with the increasing global stretch rate and decreased with the increasing H2 mole fraction in the fuel. Numerical simulation was conducted with CHEMKIN software using GRI 3.0 and USC-Mech II mechanisms. The predicted extinction limit trend was in agreement with the micro-gravity experimental data. Sensitivity analyses showed that the competition between the main branching reaction H + O2 ⇔ O + OH and the main termination reaction H + O2 + M ⇔ HO2 + M in the H2/O2 chemistry determined the extinction limits of the flames. The dominant species for syngas/air flame extinction was the H radical. The key exothermal reaction changed from OH + CO ⇔ H + CO2 to OH + H2 ⇔ H + H2O with the increasing H2 mole fraction in the fuel. Also, the mass diffusion played a more important role than chemical kinetics in the flame extinction. When the H2 mass diffusion was suppressed, the reaction zone was pushed to the stagnation plane and the flame became weaker; while H mass diffusion is suppressed, the reaction zone slightly shifted towards the upstream and the flame was slightly strengthened.

Abstract:The combined effects of flame curvature, radiation, and stretch on the extinction of premixed tubular flames are investigated by using the large-activation-energy asymptotic method with a non-linear radiation model. A general expression for flame speed, flame temperature and extinction limits is obtained and it is used to study the radiation and flame curvature coupling at different Lewis numbers. The results show that the coupling between radiation and flame curvature leads to multiple flame bifurcations and extinction limits. Furthermore, both the stretch and radiation extinction limits are found to be greatly affected by flame curvature.

Abstract:Based on literature analytical and computational results that Le >1 premixed flames are susceptible to exhibit pulsating instability, and that such propensity is promoted with increasing positive stretch, experiments were conducted on counterflow twin flames of lean and rich mixtures of methane in 15% O 2 /(O 2 +He) such that the mixture Lewis number uniformly exceeds unity. Experimental results on the flame luminosity and position showed that these Le >1 flames do exhibit pulsating instability as the strain rate is increased beyond a critical value, that pulsation develops for sufficiently off-stoichiometric (≤0.80 and ≥1.30) flames while steady burning and extinction are associated with near-stoichiometric flames, and that the amplitude of the oscillatory flames increases with increasing strain rate until the flame extinguishes. Computations with detailed chemistry and transport showed qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experimental results, including the oscillation frequency. The calculation further reveals that during the course of largeamplitude oscillation, when the instantaneous flame temperature falls below its value at the steady-state extinction limit, the flame cannot revive itself and extinction occurs.

Abstract:The dynamics of radiative, near-limit, stretched premixed flames was investigated analytically and numerically, with emphasis on pulsating stability for sub-unity Lewis numbers. The analysis includes both flame stretch and order-unity heat loss, and yields a dispersion equation for the stability of radiative stretched flames subjected to symmetrical and asymmetrical perturbations. The dispersion equation reduces to that of the classical thermo-diffusional stability analysis of Sivashinsky in the limit of small heat loss, small stretch rate, and infinite flame separation distance. Results show that sub-limit flames are stable near both radiation and stretch extinction limits, and that oscillation occurs only at moderate flame stretch rates. The unstable regime and the stability diagram were obtained. Numerical simulation with detailed chemical kinetics and transport models yielded results that are in good agreement with theory. The present work also provides a satisfactory explanation of the experimental results obtained in microgravity.

Abstract:A set of nonlinear, coupled, algebraic conservation relations have been used to describe the bulk response of nonadiabatic stretched premixed flames in terms of the flame temperature, the characteristic thicknesses of the preheat and mass diffusion zones ahead of the flame, and the mass fluxes at the upstream and downstream boundaries of these zones. Specific cases studied include adiabatic stretched flames, nonadiabatic unstretched flames with distributed conductive and radiative heat losses, and stretched flames with conductive heat loss; these cases encompass and extend practically all previous theoretical models on this class of nonlinear premixed flame phenomena. Solutions exhibit the characteristic extinction turning-point behavior, while the predicted extinction states also agree well with those asymptotic results that have been derived. The study also examines and distinguishes the various possible definitions of flame stretch and discusses the relation of the flammability limit with radiative heat loss.

Abstract:The interaction and extinction dynamics of a partially-premixed flame ensemble, consisting of a premixed flame and a nonpremixed flame, are theoretically and experimentally studied for the counter-flow configuration generated by a premixed fuel/oxidizer/inert stream and a fuel/inert stream. Separate asymptotic analyses are performed for the structure and extinction of a single merged flame, a binary premixed-nonpremixed flame and a binary premixed-premixed flame; in the last case it is recognized that under certain situations a nonpremixed flame can exhibit the characteristics of a premixed flame. Theoretical results show that the extinction of a binary flame always occurs in a single stage, with the individual flames separated. The extent of separateness can be further modified by the preferential diffusion nature of the mixture. These predictions are completely substantiated by experimental results obtained by using mixtures consisting of methane, ethane or propane as the fuel and O2/N2 as the oxidizer.

Abstract:We examine the extinction characteristics of premixed methane-air flames subject to volumetric heat loss with a reduced reaction mechanism. A combination of rate-ratio and large activation energy asymptotics is employed to resolve the multi-layered flame structure, and an expression for the non-adiabatic burning rate is obtained. Extinction turning points are reproduced acid extinction conditions are found explicitly as a function of the various kinetic parameters. In particular the flame is found to extinguish when the burning rate (scaled by its adiabatic value) is reduced to a nearly constant value, roughly 0.6, over the entire range of system parameters, in agreement with previous asymptotic and numerical studies. The reduction in flame temperature at extinction is found to be less than that predicted by one-step models.
