Abstract:A UV laser ablation microprobe coupled to an ICPMS has been used to determine trace element concentrations in solids with a spatial resolution of 50 microns and detection limits ranging from 2 μg/g for Ni to 50 ng/g for the REE, The, and U. Experiments designed to optimize laser operating conditions show that pulse rates of 4 Hz produce a steady state signal with less inter‐element fractionation per unit time than higher pulse rates (10–20 Hz). Comparisons of laser microprobe analyses of garnets and pyroxenes using the NIST 610 and 612 glasses as calibration standards, with proton microprobe, solution ICPMS, INAA and XRF data show no significant matrix effects. Laser microprobe analyses of the NIST 610 and 612 glasses have a precision and accuracy of 2–5%, and error analysis shows that counting statistics and the precision on the internal standard concentration accounts for the analytical uncertainty. The NIST glasses appear to be useful calibration materials for trace element analysis of geological materials by laser microprobe.

Abstract:Increasing the spatial resolution of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a challenge in microanalysis of geological samples. Smaller sizes for the laser beam will allow for (1) high resolution determination of trace element compositions, (2) accurate estimation of crystal/melt partition coefficients, (3) detailed characterization of diffusion profiles, and (4) analysis of fine volcanic glasses. Here, we report about the figures of merit for LA-ICP Quadrupole MS down to a spatial resolution of 5 {\mu}m. This study highlights the possibility to achieve suitable limits of detection, accuracy and precision for geological samples even at spatial resolutions of the order of 5 {\mu}m. At a beam size of 15 {\mu}m precision (measured as one sigma) and accuracy (expressed as relative deviation from the reference value) are of the order of 10%. At a smaller beam size of 8um, precision decreases to 15% for concentration above 1.7 {\mu}g g-1. As the beam size is decreased to ~5 {\mu}m, precision declines to about 15% and 20% for concentrations above 10 {\mu}g g-1 using 42Ca and 29Si as internal standard, respectively. Accuracy is better or equal to 10% and 13 % at beam sizes of 15 and 10 {\mu}m respectively. When the spatial resolution is increased to 8 {\mu}m, accuracy remains better than 15% and 20% for 42Ca and 29Si as internal standard, respectively. We employed such high-resolution techniques to volcanic glasses in ash particles of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Our results are well consistent with the previously reported data obtained at lower spatial resolution, supporting the reliability of the method.

Abstract:A method was developed for the rapid in situ analysis of major and trace elements and Pb isotopes in silicate glass samples that combines laser ablation quadrupole and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-Q-ICP-MS/MC-ICP-MS). Major, trace elements, and Pb isotope ratio compositions were clearly affected by laser conditions. Using a laser spot size of 160 μm, a laser ablation frequency of 15 Hz, an energy density 18 J/cm2, and a 1: 9 ratio of laser ablation aerosol to the corresponding makeup gas, we obtained accurate major and trace element contents and Pb isotope ratios. Using Ca as the internal standard element, and GSE-1G and NIST 610 as the external standards for calibration, element contents generally matched the preferred values within 15%. Higher relative errors for some elements (e.g., Cr, Ga, Ge) may have been caused by lower than recommended values in some standards. The exponential law correction method for Tl normalization, with optimum adjusted Tl ratio, was utilized to obtain Pb isotopic data with good precision and accuracy. Pb isotopic ratios of the glass reference materials were in good agreement with the reference or published values to within 2 s measurement uncertainties, and the analytical precision was better than 0.17% (e.g., 208Pb/206Pb). The developed method is a simple, reliable, and accurate technique for determining major, trace elements, and Pb isotope compositions of silicate glasses and minerals within a single ablation event.
Contrasting Matrix Induced Elemental Fractionation in NIST SRM and Rock Glasses During Laser Ablation ICP-MS Analysis at High Spatial Resolution

Abstract:The greatest strength of the LA-ICP-MS technique is its application to microsampling in which extremely small pits are obtained. The results of this study highlight some significant different laser-induced fractionations between widely used external reference materials NIST SRM 610–614 and natural silicate reference materials (e.g., USGS reference glasses (GSE-1G, GSD-1G), MPI-DING glasses, USGS basalt glasses and zircon reference material GJ-1) at high spatial resolution analysis. For the sample matrices and analytical conditions used in this study, the laser-induced elemental fractionations for 63 selected isotopes are negligible at the spot sizes of 160–44 µm. However, the laser-induced elemental fractionations of Li, Na, Si, K, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rb, Cs and U (with respect to Ca) increase significantly with decreasing spot sizes from 44 µm to 32 µm, 24 µm and 16 µm in these natural silicate reference materials. Unlike in these sample matrices, laser-induced elemental fractionations of these elements in NIST SRM 610–614 are unique in that they are almost not affected by the change of spot sizes from 44 to 32 to 24 µm, with only slight increase at the spot sizes of 16 µm. The much less significant laser-induced elemental fractionation in NIST SRM 61X in comparison with other natural silicate materials makes them not ideal as external reference materials at high spatial resolution analysis. Alternatively, this NIST SRM 61X-specific matrix effect for Li, Na, K, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rb, Cs and U can be minimized by using Si for internal standardization. U and Pb in zircon GJ-1 are exceptions, which are zircon-specific.
Analysis of 42 Major and Trace Elements in Glass Standard Reference Materials by 193nm LA-ICPMS.

Abstract:Four major elements (Na, Mg, Ti and Mn) and thirty-eight trace elements covering nearly the entire mass range from Li-7 to U-238 in four USGS (United State Geological Survey) glass standard reference materials BCR-2G, BHVO-2G, BIR-1G and AGV-2G, and three NIST (National Institute of Standard and Technology) synthetic silicate glass standard reference materials NIST610, NIST612 and NIST614 are analyzed by ICP-MS coupled with a 193nm ArF excimer laser ablation system. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) and relative deviations (RDs) of obtained average concentrations from the reference values are mostly less than 10% for all these USGS and NIST glasses except AGV-2G. Significant exceptions occur for elements with very low concentrations. The RSDs of REEs suggest that these glasses are homogeneous on a scale of 60mum except AGV-2G. Our study demonstrates the suitability of this technique for quantitative major, minor and trace element analysis up to at least several weight percent due to a wide linear dynamic range of 10(8)cps (counts per second) in ICP-MS.

Abstract:Rationale In situ trace element analysis of melt inclusions by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) provides important geochemistry information. However, the precision and accuracy of this technique are affected by many factors, such as matrix effect, laser conditions, and calibration method. In addition, many previous LA-ICP-MS studies ablated entire melt inclusions along with their host minerals and obtained trace element composition by deconvoluting the mixed ablation signal, which may induce much uncertainty. Methods A 193 nm ArF laser ablation system combined with inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SF-MS) was used to investigate matrix effect, laser conditions, choice of external calibration standards, and data reduction strategy for in situ analysis of 36 major and trace elements in six common silicate reference glasses. The validity of the protocol presented here was demonstrated by measuring trace elements in olivine-hosted melt inclusions. Instead of ablating entire melt inclusions along with their host minerals, melt inclusions were polished to the surface to avoid laser ablating the mineral host. Results The calibration lines calculated from the calibration standards should cross the coordinate origin, especially for low-concentration elements (<10 ppm). As the laser crater size increased from 17 to 33 mu m, the precision was improved from <20% to <8% (2RSD), and accuracy was improved from +/- 20% to better than +/- 10%. Most measured trace elements in Dali melt inclusions are consistent with those in their host rocks. For mobile elements (Ba, Sr, Pb), melt inclusions display much smaller variations than their host rocks. Conclusions A simple but accurate approach for in situ analysis of trace elements in melt inclusions by LA-ICP-SF-MS has been established, which should greatly facilitate the wider application of in situ trace element geochemistry to melt inclusion studies.

Abstract:Many geological, environmental and industrial applications can be enhanced through integrated microbeam and bulk geochemical determinations of major and trace element concentrations, Advantages of in situ microanalysis include minimal sample preparation, low blanks, information about the spatial distribution of compositional characteristics and the ability to avoid microscopic inclusions of foreign material, In this paper we compare trace element data obtained by laser ablation ICP-MS, solution ICP-MS, electron microprobe analysis and proton microprobe analysis for a variety of silicate glasses and minerals, New determinations for 36 trace elements in BCR-2G, a microbeam glass standard, are presented. Results obtained by the various microbeam and solution methods agree well for concentrations ranging over several orders of magnitude. Replicate analyses of BCR-2G demonstrate an analytical precision of 2-8% relative (1 sigma) for all elements by laser ablation ICP-MS and less than or equal to 3% by solution ICP-MS, except for Li (5%), These data emphasize the utility of laser ablation ICP-MS as a quantitative microbeam technique capable of rapid, precise determinations of sub-ppm trace element abundances in a variety of targets.
The Uncertainty Budget of the Multi-Element Analysis of Glasses Using La-Icp-Ms

Abstract:A first attempt was made to estimate an uncertainty budget for the multi-element analysis of glasses using LA-ICP-MS, in accordance with the "Bottom-up'' approach of the EURACHEM/CITAC-Guide.(1) Analyses of NIST SRM 612, 614 and USGS glasses BCR-2G and BIR-1G were carried out using a 193 nm excimer LA-ICP-MS under routine conditions. Calibration was performed using NIST 610 with internal standardisation using Ca. The uncertainty budgets for the analytes Co, La and Th were studied. Instrumental drift and uncertainties from working values of NIST 610, as reported by Pearce et al.,(2) are the dominant sources of uncertainty for a typical individual analysis of NIST 612 and BCR-2G/BIR-1G with mass contents of Co, La and Th ranging from 6 to 52 mu g g(-1). In contrast, the uncertainty contributions from Poisson counting statistics prevail for those of NIST 614 and BIR-1G with the three elements having a lower range between 0.029 and 0.75 mu g g(-1). La was an exception. Its combined uncertainties were consistently dominated by its uncertainty from the working value of NIST 610(2) at all mass content ranges investigated, suggesting that more accurate reference values for the analyte in NIST 610,(2) and for all analytes with large uncertainties, are needed. Additionally, a z-score assessment was carried out using procedures similar to those used in the International Proficiency Test for Analytical Microprobe Geochemistry Laboratories. The z-scores in this study were in the range -2 < z < 2, indicating that there were no significant unsuspected influences in the analytical system. This suggests that the uncertainty budget reported here contains all the significant parameters.

Abstract:A method was developed for the in situ analysis of magnesium isotopes by femtosecond laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fsLA-MC-ICP-MS). Concentration matching experiment revealed that the Mg isotopic composition could be measured accurately when Mg concentration difference between sample and standard were in the range of 0.4–3.0. The Mg isotopic composition was affected by the femtosecond laser conditions, including laser spot size and scanning speed, due to mass discrimination changing which was caused by different mass loading into mass spectrometer. The amount of ablated aerosol was correlated with laser frequency, laser ablation spot size, and scanning speed. However, the laser energy density showed negligible effect on the accuracy of Mg isotope measurement due to the high energy output of femtosecond laser which was higher than the ablation threshold. To obtain reliable Mg isotopic compositions, the laser ablation spot size, laser frequency and scanning speed should be consistent during one analytical section and the difference of Mg concentration between standard and samples should be in 3 times. The results of two reference materials agreed well with the published values within 2 s analytical uncertainties. The developed method is simple, reliable and accurate, and can be used for the Mg isotope analysis of volcanic glasses and silicate minerals.
Simultaneous in Situ Determination of Pb Isotope Ratios and Trace Element Concentrations in Melt Inclusions by LASS‐ICP‐MS

Abstract:Abstract Melt inclusions provide unique insights into magmatic sources and processes. This study presents a method for simultaneously measuring Pb isotopes and trace elements in melt inclusions using a 193 nm excimer laser ablation system coupled to a multiple‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometer (MC‐ICP‐MS) and a sector‐field ICP‐MS (SF‐ICP‐MS). The ablated aerosol was split with a Y‐shaped connector into two gas streams, which were simultaneously transported into two mass spectrometers. Lead isotopes were measured on the MC‐ICP‐MS, while trace element concentrations were determined on the SF‐ICP‐MS. Little analytical bias was observed when the aerosol is divided into variable proportions (5:5, 6:4, 7:3, 8:2–9:1) to the two instruments. The precision and accuracy of this method were evaluated by analyzing five geological reference glasses with two laser spot diameters (33, and 45 μm). All the 33 measured trace element concentrations are consistent with the reference values (±10%) and have precisions less than 15% (2RSD). The precisions of the 208Pb/206Pb, and 207Pb/206Pb ratios correlate with Pb concentrations. From BHVO‐2G (Pb = 1.6 ppm) to TB‐1G (Pb = 16.1 ppm), the precision on these ratios improve from about 0.4%–0.2% with a 33 μm laser spot diameter. The mean Pb isotope ratios for the five reference glasses are within 0.15% of the reference values. Using our new method, Pb isotope ratios and trace element contents of plagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions in a mid‐ocean ridge basalt from the Indian Ocean were measured.

Combined use of multiple external and internal standards in LA-ICP-MS analysis of bulk geological samples using lithium borate fused glass

Abstract:We describe a method for LA-ICP-MS elemental analysis of geological materials using low-dilution Li-borate fused glass WDXRF pellets, with samples, drift monitor, and 18 reference materials (RMs) identically prepared. After analysis for 46 elements by WDXRF, LA-ICP-MS intensities from samples and RMs are collected, and background corrected with Iolite software. HALite , a new software application, was developed to derive the elemental compositions from the LA-ICP-MS net signals. In HALite , elements are drift corrected using polynomial functions, and flux-fused RM element sensitivities are calculated from known mass fractions. Multiple internal standard (IS) elements are used to model each sample's laser response. Analyte mass fractions in unknowns are determined using the calibrated sensitivity correlation models for multiple IS elements. Either the WDXRF mass fractions or the initial round of calculated LA-ICP-MS mass fractions are used to calculate weighted mean sensitivities. Validation experiments with flux-fused RMs run as unknowns yield results with less than 5-10% total relative uncertainty for most analytes. We derive equations which allow calculation of the precision and total uncertainty as a function of mass fraction for each analyte element. Critical assessment of the elemental composition of Corning archeological reference glasses by LA-ICP-MS

Abstract:Corning archeological reference glasses A, B, C, and D have been made to simulate different historic technologies of glass production and are used as standards in historic glass investigations. In this work, nanoseconds (193, 266 nm) and femtosecond (800 nm) laser ablation were used to study the elemental composition of Corning glasses using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The determined concentrations of 26 oxides (Li2O, B2O3, Na2O, MgO, Al2O3, SiO2, P2O5, K2O, CaO, TiO2, V2O5, Cr2O3, MnO, Fe2O3, CoO, NiO, CuO, ZnO, Rb2O, SrO, ZrO2, SnO2, Sb2O5, BaO, PbO, Bi2O3) are compared with values reported in the literature. Results show variable discrepancies between the data, with the largest differences found for Cr2O3 in Corning A; Li2O, B2O3, and Cr2O3 in Corning B; and MnO, Sb2O5, Cr2O3, and Bi2O3 in Corning C. The best agreement between the measured and literature values was found for Corning D. Determination of Lead Isotope Compositions of Geological Samples Using Femtosecond Laser Ablation MC-ICPMS

Abstract:Lead isotopic compositions of international silicate glasses, feldspar and copper-based samples are obtained using femtosecond laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fLA-MC-ICPMS). Some international glass standards for the microanalysis are applied to evaluate the method reported here. The Pb isotopic composition of these NIST glasses (SRM 610, 612, 614), USGS (BHVO-2G, BCR-2G, BIR-1G and GSD-1G) and MPI-DING glasses (GOR132-G, KL2-G, T1-G, StHs60/80-G) agree well with recommended values in 2 s error. One of 15 copper-based metals is found to have homogenized Pb isotope data and can be used as an external calibration standard and quality control sample for chalcopyrite, ancient coins, etc., to trace the genesis of metal deposit and culture exchange among different dynasties (GBW02137, 208Pb/204Pb = 37.9661 ± 0.0005 (2 s), 207Pb/204Pb = 15.5770 ± 0.0002 (2 s), 206Pb/204Pb = 17.7462 ± 0.0002 (2 s)). We also prepared a feldspar glass to serve as the external calibration standard/QC for Pb isotope analysis using fLA-MC-ICPMS.

Abstract:We report micromodification of Eu element distribution in a silicate glass with femtosecond laser irradiation. Elemental analysis shows that the content of Eu decreased at the focal point and increased in a ring-shaped region around the focal point, which indicates migration of Eu ions has been induced by the femtosecond laser irradiation. Confocal fluorescence spectra demonstrate that the fluorescence intensity of Eu(3+) ions increased by 20% in the laser-induced, Eu-enriched, ring-shaped region compared with that for nonirradiated glass. The mechanism for the laser induced change in fluorescence properties of Eu(3+) has been investigated.

Precise and Accurate in Situ Determination of Lead Isotope Ratios in NIST, USGS, MPI‐DING and CGSG Glass Reference Materials Using Femtosecond Laser Ablation MC‐ICP‐MS

Abstract:Lead isotope ratio data were obtained with good precision and accuracy using a 266 nm femtosecond laser ablation (fLA) system connected to a multi‐collector ICP‐MS (MC‐ICP‐MS) and through careful control of analytical procedures. The mass fractionation coefficient induced by 266 nm femtosecond laser ablation was approximately 28% lower than that by 193 nm excimer laser ablation (eLA) with helium carrier gas. The exponential law correction method for Tl normalisation with optimum adjusted Tl ratio was utilised to obtain Pb isotopic data with good precision and accuracy. The Pb isotopic ratios of the glass reference materials NIST SRM 610, 612, 614; USGS BHVO‐2G, BCR‐2G, GSD‐1G, BIR‐1G; and MPI‐DING GOR132‐G, KL2‐G, T1‐G, StHs60/80‐G, ATHO‐G and ML3B‐G were determined using fLA‐MC‐ICP‐MS. The measured Pb isotopic ratios were in good agreement with the reference or published values within 2s measurement uncertainties. We also present the first high‐precision Pb isotopic data for GSE‐1G, GSC‐1G, GSA‐1G and CGSG‐1, CGSG‐2, CGSG‐4 and CGSG‐5 glass reference materials obtained using the femtosecond laser ablation MC‐ICP‐MS analysis technique.

Abstract:Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser ablation (LA) are widely used to study the trace element composition of minerals, including silicates; nevertheless, methodological activities in this area aimed at increasing the sensitivity and locality and reducing composition error, remain relevant. The paper describes methodological approaches for studying the trace element composition of a number of silicate minerals using NexION 300S quadrupole ICP-MS with an NWR 213 LA attachment, obtained on standard synthetic glasses NIST SRM 612 and 610, as well as a number of interlaboratory zircon standards Mud Tank, GJ-1, 91500, Plesovice, Temora-2 and clinopyroxene samples 1636 and 1780 from clinopyroxenite of the Nizhniy Tagil massif (Urals). Presented here are the metrological characteristics of the analysis technique (the accuracy in the determination of elements from Li to U) and variations in sensitivity for different elements, obtained with a crater diameter of 13, 20, 25, 50 and 100 microns. The MS sensitivity drift analysis has been performed through an 8-hour analytical session; a comparison has been made between the results obtained and the literature data; a satisfactory agreement of the results has been observed. The analytical errors allow the use of methods for conducting research in solving various geochemical problems.
Precision of in Situ Isotope Ratio Measurements by Lam-Mc-Icpms

Abstract:The coupling of a laser ablation microprobe (LAM) to a multi-collector ICP-MS has enabled the development of highprecision in situ isotope ratio analysis. Like other microanalytical techniques, laser ablation MC-ICPMS provides the benefit of high spatial resolution and produces data that can be integrated with microstructural and other geochemical datasets. Despite the advances in recent years there remains a perception that the accuracy and precision of the in situ measurements suffer in comparison to solution measurements because of matrix effects and isobaric interferences. In addition to corrections for mass bias and isobaric/molecular interferences the precision of an individual measurement is primarily a function of the number of ions counted and therefore depends on the concentration of the element in the mineral, the size of the laser pit, the sensitivity of the mass spectrometer and the counting time. Signals produced by laser ablation are transient, but operating conditions for the laser can be chosen to achieve near steadystate signals. Frequency, laser fluence and spot size settings all contribute to signal stability and intensity. Instrument sensitivity is not a problem for isotopic systems where the element is a major constituent of the mineral (e.g. Mg in olivine, Fe in pyrite). Significant limitations remain in the measurement of isotopic ratios of trace elements in common minerals and in many cases the best precision has been obtained at the expense of spatial resolution (effectively using the laser as a solid sampling tool) or limited to minerals with very low parent/daughter ratios. Ablation time and hence counting time can be limited by the size of the mineral grain and the calculation of the precision of individual measurements should take this into account. The use of ion counters in combination with Faraday detectors or multipleion counting systems can extend the measurements to smaller ion beam intensities, thereby making it possible to use smaller spot sizes or measure lower concentrations. Although the precision of individual measurements using ion counters can approach the theoretical precision, external reproducibility is dependent on long-term detector stability and gain calibration. Abstract:The direct analysis of GBW07123,garnet and petrified wood were investigated using the homemade laser ablation and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer(LAI-TOFMS).Samples were analyzed in pressed pellet forms.Parametric studies were conducted on the mass spectrometer with respect to laser power density,pressure of the buffer gas and repelling modes of the pulse.The tentative methods used to determine elemental concentration and relative elemental concentration of samples were also discussed.In the research,Mn was chosen as the referenced element.In LAI-TOFMS,elemental concentration was calculated by RSCs(relative sensitivity coefficient) and the concentration of Mn,while relative elemental concentration was related to the mass of the measured element and its intensity in the spectrum.In ICP-MS and XRF,relative elemental concentration was the ratio of concentration of measured elements to that of Mn.Analytical process and results of LAI-TOFMS,ICP-MS and XRF were compared.The results presented by LAI-TOFMS are in relatively good agreement with that obtained from ICP-MS and XRF.Moreover,LAI-TOFMS allows for rapid elemental analysis due to its simple sample preparation,almost no contamination to sample and little sample consumption.Ultimately,LAI-TOFMS offers the capability of semi-quantitative mineral direct analysis.
