Abstract:One-dimensional to three-dimensional lanthanide coordination polymers 1-8 based on benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid (H3BIDC) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at different pH values, generally formulated as {[Pr(HBIDC)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), [Yb(HBIDC)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)](n) (2), and [Ln(HBIDC)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(3)](n) [Ln = Ho (3), and Tb (4)] and {[Ln(H2BIDC)(HBIDC)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O}(n) [Ln = Tb (5), Sm (6), Dy (7), and Gd (8), H(2)ox = oxalic acid]. All coordination polymers have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural diversity, luminescence and thermal properties of all coordination polymers have been investigated. Coordination polymers 1-8 exhibit four different structural types: topological analysis has given the 3-D pcu network, with the point symbol of {4(12).6(3)} in coordination polymer 1. Coordination polymer 2 exhibits a 4-connected 4(4) topology, and coordination polymers 3-4 appear as 2-D (6,3)-connected hcb network topology. The 1-D helical infinite chain of coordination polymers 5-8 around the crystallographic 21 axis spread along the b axis direction, with different 1-D helical infinite chains forming 3-D supramolecular framework via hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions. The coordination polymers 4 and 5 could be triggered to have intense characteristic lanthanide-centered green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at room and liquid nitrogen temperature, or dispersed in CH2Cl2 at 77 K. In coordination polymers 4 and 5, the oxalic acid introduced into coordination polymer 4 as a second ligand further sensitized the trivalent terbium ion, and resulted in longer fluorescence lifetimes of coordination polymer 4 (1058.58 mu s at 298 K, 679.42 mu s at 77 K in the solid-state, 867.82 mu s in CH2Cl2 at 77 K) than coordination polymer 5 (595.06 mu s at 298 K, 583.19 mu s at 77 K in the solid-state, 584.38 mu s in CH2Cl2 at 77 K). In coordination polymers 6 and 7, we not only measured emission spectra in the visible region, but also detected the infrequent NIR emission spectra in the near infrared region of samarium and dysprosium ions. The singlet excited state (30 303 cm(-1)) and the lowest triplet state energy level (24 390 cm(-1)) of H3BIDC ligand were calculated based on the UV-vis absorbance edges of ligand and the phosphorescence spectrum of Gd(III) coordination polymer (8) at 77 K, showing that the effective extent of energy transfer from H3BIDC ligand to lanthanide ions follows the sequence of Tb3+, Dy3+ > Sm3+. Finally, thermal behaviors of all coordination polymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, which exhibited high thermal stability.

Abstract:A new divalent ytterbium complex, [{(L-Ph) Yb-II(Et2O)(thf)}(2)(mu KI)] {L-Ph = Ph2Si(NAr)(2), Ar = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)} (3), was synthesized by the reaction of [(LPh) (YbI)-I-III(thf)(2)] (2) and an excess of potassium. The bimetallic ytterbium(II) species with bulky diamido ligands are bridged by a KI molecule with cation-p interactions. These two complexes have been fully characterized, particularly by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:A single crystal X-ray analysis of the YbIII complex with diethylenetriaminepentaacetate acid (dtpa) has shown that the compound has a binuclear structure in contrast to the corresponding YbIII complex with other aminopolycarboxylic acids ligand that have a mononuclear structure. Five oxygen atoms and three nitrogen atoms from a ligand molecule construct a distorted square antiprism around YbIII ions. One of the square planes is capped by an oxygen atom from the adjacent dtpa ligand which result in the formation of a binuclear complex. The coordination polyhedron including this oxygen atom is described as a monocapped square antiprismatic structure.

Abstract:The N,N-bidentate ligand 2-{(N-2,6-diisopropylphenyl)iminomethyl)}pyrrole (L-1) and the N,N,P-tridentate ligand 2-{(N-2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)iminomethyl)}pyrrole (L-2) have been prepared. Their reactions with homoleptic yttrium tris(alkyl) compound Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) have been investigated. Treatment of Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) with 1 equiv of L-1 generated a THF-solvated bimetallic (pyrrolylaldiminato)yttrium mono(alkyl) complex (1) of central symmetry. In this process, L-1 is deprotonated by metal alkyl and its imino CN group is reduced to C-N by intramolecular alkylation, generating dianionic species that bridge two yttrium alkyl units in a unique eta(5)/eta(1):kappa(1) mode. The pyrrolyl ring behaves as a heterocyclopentadienyl ligand. Reaction of Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) with 2 equiv of L-1 afforded the monomeric bis(pyrrolylaldiminato)yttrium mono(alkyl) complex (2), selectively. Amination of 2 with 2,6-diisopropylaniline gave the corresponding yttrium amido complex (3). In 3 the pyrrolide ligand is monoanionic and bonds to the yttrium atom in a eta(1):kappa(1) mode. The homoleptic tris(eta(1):kappa(1)-pyrrolylaldiminato)yttrium complex (4) was isolated when the molar ratio of L-1 to Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) increases to 3:1. Reaction of L-2 with equimolar Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) afforded an asymmetric binuclear complex (5). The dianionic N,N,P tridentate moieties derived from L-2 coordinate to yttrium atoms in eta(5)/eta(1):kappa(2) modes, generating tetrahedron and trigonal/pyramidal geometry around the two metal centers, respectively. Both alkylation of the imino CN group of ligand L-2 and the pyrrole's ability to act similar to a heterocyclopentadienyl moiety were also found in complex 5. Complexes 1-3 and 5 initiated polymerizations of D,L-lactide to give atactic polylactides with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions.

Abstract:By the reaction of Cp3Ln (Cp = C5H5; Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb) with equimolar n-propyl alcohol in THF (tetrahydrofuran) at room temperature three new binuclear organolanthanide complexes, [CP2Ln(mu-OCH2CH2CH3)]2 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb), have been synthesized, as shown by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis for the complex [Cp2Yb(mu-OCH2CH2CH3)]2. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and MS spectra. The Yb2O2 unit is planar, and the ytterbium atom is coordinated by two Cp ring centroids and two oxygen atoms of two n-propyloxide ligands to form a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The average Yb-C (Cp) bond distance is 2.589(17) angstrom. The average Yb-O distance is 2.199(5) angstrom. The Yb-Yb separation [3.521(1) angstrom] indicates that no metal-metal interaction is present.

Abstract:The reaction of the yttrium dialkyls (C5H4- PPh2=N (C6H3Pr2)-Pr-i)Y(CH2SiMe3)(2)(thf) (1) with an excess of N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide gave the yttrium monoalkyl complex (C5H4-PPh2=N-(C6H3Pr2)-Pr-i)Y(CH2SiMe3)[(PrN)-Pr-i= C(CH2SiMe3)-(NPr)-Pr-i] (2). 2 subsequently reacted with 1 equiv of PhSiH3 to generate the CpPN/amidinate heteroleptic yttrium hydride [(C5H4-PPh2=N (C6H3Pr2)-Pr-i)Y(CH2SiMe3)(2)-(NPr)-Pr-i](mu-H)}(2) (3). Hydride 3 showed good reactivity toward various substrates containing unsaturated C C, C-N, and N-N bonds, such as azobenzene, p-tolyacetylene, 1,4-bis(trimethylsily1)-1,3-butanediyne, N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide, and 4-dimethylaminopyridine, affording the yttrium hydrazide complex 4 with a rare eta(2)-Cp bonding mode, yttrium terminal alkynyl complex 5, yttrium eta(3)-propargyl complex 6, yttrium amidinate complex 7, and yttrium 2-hydro-4-dimethylaminopyridyl product 8, respectively.

Abstract:The (NH4)(3) [Yb-III(ttha)]center dot 5H(2)O (I) (H(6)ttha = triethylenetetramine-N,N,N',N ",N"',N"'-hexaacetic acid) and (NH4)[Yb-III(pdta)(H2O)(2)]center dot 5H(2)O (II) (H(4)pdta = propylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid) complexes are synthesized by heat-refluxing and acidity-adjusting methods, and their structures are determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. These two complexes are all mononuclear structures. The complex I crystallizes in ttha monoclinic crystal system with the P2(1)/c space group. The central Yb-III ion is nine-coordinated only by one the ligand, and one non-coordinate carboxyl group is left. The crystal data are as follows: a = 10.321(4) angstrom, b = 12.744(5) angstrom, c = 23.203(9) angstrom, beta = 91.082(6)degrees, V = 3051(2) angstrom(3), Z = 4, D-c = 1.754 g/cm(3), mu = 3.150 mm(-1), F(000) = 1636, R = 0.0357, and wR = 0.0672 for 6203 observed reflections with I >= 2 sigma(I). The YbN4O5 part in the [Yb-III(ttha)](3-) complex anion forms a pseudo-monocapped square antiprismatic polyhedron. The complex II is coordinated with one pdta ligand and two water molecules, which form an eight-coordinate structure, and crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with the P (1) over bar space group. The YbN2O6 part in the [Yb-III(pdta)(H2O)(2)](-) complex anion makes a pseudo-square antiprismatic polyhedron. The crystal data are as follows: a = 9.8923(9) angstrom, b = 10.9627(10) angstrom, c = 12.2618(11) angstrom, alpha = 67.284(5)degrees, beta = 70.956(6)degrees, gamma = 68.741(5)degrees, V = 1115.97(18) angstrom(3), Z = 2, D-c = 1.843 g/cm(3), mu = 4.264 mm(-1), F(000) = 618, R = 0.0177, and wR = 0.0409 for 4036 observed reflections with I >= 2 sigma(I).
Selective Reaction Based on the Linked Diamido Ligands of Dinuclear Lanthanide Complexes

Abstract:The dinuclear ytterbium pyridyl diamido complexes [Cp(2)Yb(THF)](2)[mu-eta(1):eta(2)-(NH)(2)(C(5)H(3)N-2,6)] (1a) and [Cp(2)Yb(THF)](2)[mu-eta(1):eta(2)-(NH)(2)(C(5)H(3)N-2,3)] (1b) are easily prepared by protonolysis of Cp(3)Yb with 0.5 equiv of the corresponding diaminopyridine in accepted yields, respectively. Treatment of 1a with 2 equiv of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (CyN=C=NCy) in THF at low temperature leads to the isolation of the formal double N-H addition product (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-(CyN(CyNH)CN)(2)(C(5)H(3)N-2,6)] (2) in 42% yield. Compound 2 is unstable to heat and slowly isomerized to the mixed neutral/dianionic diguanidinate complex (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-(CyNH)(2)CN(C(5)H(3)N-2,6)NC(NCy)(2)](THF) (3) at room temperature. Similarly, treatment of 1b with 2 equiv of CyN=C=NCy gives the addition/ isomerization product (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2):eta(1)-(CyNH)(2)CN(C(5)H(3)N-2,3)NC(NCy)(2)] (4). Moreover, the reaction of various ytterbium aryl diamido complexes (prepared in situ from [Cp(2)YbMe](2) and aryldiamine, respectively) with CyN=C=NCy affords the corresponding addition products (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-{CyN(CyNH)CN}(2)(C(6)H(4)-1,4)] (5), (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-{CyN(CyNH)CN}(2)(C(6)H(4)-1,3)](6), and (Cp(2)Yb)(2)[mu-eta(2):eta(2)-{CyN(CyNH)CN}(2)(C(13)H(8)-2,7)] (7), respectively. In contrast to pyridyl-bridged bis(guanidinate monoanion) complexes, aryl-bridged bis(guanidinate monoanion) complexes 5-7 are stable even with prolonged heating at 110 degrees C. All the results not only demonstrate that the presence of the pyridyl bridge can impart the diamido complexes with a unique reactivity and initiate the unexpected reaction sequence but also indicate evidently that the number and distribution of negative charges of the diguanidinate ligand is tunable from double monoanionic units to mixed neutral/dianionic isomers. All the complexes are characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopies. The structures of complexes 1a, 3, 5, 6, and 7 are also determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract:Summary of main observation and conclusionDivalent ytterbium iodide [LYb(μ‐I)(THF)]2 (1; L = [MeC(NDIPP)CHC(Me)NCH2CH2NMe2]−, DIPP = 2,6‐(iPr)2C6H3) was synthesized and its reactivity was studied. Complex 1 was synthesized by salt metathesis of YbI2(THF)2 with the potassium salt of ligand (KL) in high yield. In the reactions with trimethylsilyl azide, azobenzene, sulfur and diphenyl disulfide, complex 1 acts as a 2e reductant. In the reaction with CO2, the central carbon atom of β‐diketiminato backbone in 1 nucleophilically attacks the CO2 molecule to give a divalent ytterbium carboxylate.

Abstract:The coordination of 1,5-bis-(1′-phenyl-3′-methyl-5′-pyrazolone-4′)-1,5-pentanedione (BPMPPD) and 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy) with lanthanide ions in water-alcohol solution has been studied. Binuclear complexes of the types : Ln2(BPMPPD)3(bipy)2·nH2O (n = 2 for Y, n = 4 for Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb); Ln2(BPMPPD)3bipy·nH2O (n = 10 for La, n = 3 for Pr, Nd, Sm and Tb) were formed. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, UV, 1H NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and fluorescence spectra.

X-ray single crystal investigation shows that complex (1) is a centrosymmetric tetrazolate-bridged dimer in which each yttrium(III) ion is coordinated by two cyclopentadienyl groups and three nitrogen atoms of the bridging Tz ligands in a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. The bridging unit Y2N6 is in a chair conformation, which is different from the planarity in the known isostructural complexes [(C5H4CH3)2Ln(μ-η1:η2-Tz)]2 (Ln = Yb, Dy, Gd).

Abstract:Two novel dinuclear complexes of terbium(III) with 1,5-bis(1'-phenyl-3'-methyl-5'-pyrazolone-4')-1,5-pentanedione (H(2)L), Tb(2)L(3).6H(2)), Tb(2)L(3).5DMF, have been synthesized. The crystal structure of Tb(2)L(3).5DMF was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Crystals are triclinic, space group P ($) over bar 1 with a = 16.957(5), b = 17.877(7), c = 18.269(2)Angstrom, alpha = 110.35(2), beta = 101.29(2), gamma = 111.00(2)degrees, V = 4511(6)Angstrom(3), Mr = 2010.76, Z = 2, Dx = 1.48 g cm(-3), mu = 16.45 cm(-1), F(000) = 2,052, R = 0.058 with 6574 reflections used in refinement. In the complex, L acts as a bridging ligand and bonds two terbium atoms with its two P-diketone groups. Each terbium ion bonds to two DMF solvent molecules. The coordination number of the two terbium ions is eight. The eight oxygen atoms around the terbium make a distorted square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron.

Abstract:The mixed mono- and dianionic beta-diketiminato yttrium complex [eta(2)-N,N-{N(2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)C(Me)}(2)CH]Y-[eta(2)-N,N-N (2, 6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i) C (Me) CH C (=CH2)N( C6H3-Pr-i(2)-2,6)] (1) was synthesized in almost quantitive yield by the metathesis reaction of beta-diketiminato potassium with YCl3 in a 3:1 molar ratio in THF at room temperature. Complex 1 reacted with 1 equiv of KCH2Ph under the same conditions to afford a linear dianionic beta-diketiminato-supported Y(III)/K(I) heterobimetallic polymer {Y[mu-eta(2):eta(1)-N,N-N(2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)C(Me)CHC(=CH2)N(C(6)H(2-)(i)Pr(2-)2,6)](2)-K(THF)(3)}(infinity) (2). Moreover, 2 can be transformed into the corresponding salt-type complexes [K([2.2.2]cryptand)](+){[eta(2)-N,N-N(2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)C(Me)-CH C (= CH2)N (C6H3-Pr-i(2)-2,6)] 2Y}(-) (3) and [(Bn4N)-Bn-n] {[eta(2)-N,N-N (2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)C(Me)CHC(=CH2)N(C6H3-Pr-i(2)-2,6)](2)Y}(-) (4) in high yields by the reactions of 2 with [2,2,2]-cryptand or (Bu4NCl)-Bu-n in THF, respectively. The reaction of 3 and 4 with 2 equiv of CS2 in THF at amibent temperature gave the anionic or neutral aryl-substituted dihydropyridinethione [K( [2.2.2] cryptand)](+)[2-S,4-N(Ar),6-MeC5H2N(Ar)](-)center dot[2-S,4-N(H)At,6-MeC5H2N(Ar)] (5) and 2-S,4-N(H)Ar,6-MeC5H2N-(Ar) (6) in moderate yields, accompanied by unidentified materials containing Y3+ ions, respectively. The formation of 5 and 6 revealed an intermolecular nudeophilic addition/cydization and some chemical bond transformations such as C-C and C-N formation, C=S deavage, and 1,3-hydrogen shift occurred in the above reactions. The molecular structures of all of these new complexes 1-6 have been determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Abstract:A new ligand, N,N'-Bis(6-methyl-2-pyridine-N-oxide)-1,3-propane (L), and some binary lanthanide complexes (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) were synthesized and characterized in detail. The composition of the binary complexes was determined as LnL(NO3)(3). They are 1: 1 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes have strong characteristic line fluorescence emission spectra, and it is also found that TbL(NO3)(3) complex has stronger luminescence intensity than EuL(NO3)(3) in solid state and in methanol.

Abstract:The title complex [K3Yb(TTHA)(H2O)5], where TTHA6− is triethylenetetraaminehexaacetic acid anion was synthesized in aqueous solution, and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. In the complex, the ytterbium ion is coordinated by four nitrogen atoms and five carboxyl oxygen atoms of the same TTHA6− anion. The coordination number of the ytterbium ion is 9, and its coordination polyhedron can be described as a distorted monocapped square antiprism. Each Yb(TTHA)3− is further connected by K+ ions through carboxyl groups of TTHA6− ion to form a three dimensional network structure.

Abstract:The structurally characterized Tp(Me2)-supported rare earth metal monoalkyl complex (Tp(Me2))CpYCH2Ph(THF) (1) was synthesized via the salt-metathesis reaction of (Tp(Me2))CpYCl(THF) with KCH2Ph in THF at room temperature. Treatment of 1 with 1 equiv of PhC CH under the same conditions afforded the corresponding alkynyl complex (Tp(Me2))CpYC CPh(THF) (2). Complex 1 exhibits high activity toward carbodiimides, isocyanate, isothiocyanate, and CS2; treatment of 1 with such substrates led to the formation of a series of the corresponding Y-C(benzyl) sigma-bond insertion products (Tp(Me2))CpY[(RN)(2)CCH2Ph] (R = Pr-i(3a), Cy(3b), 2,6-Pr-i-C6H3(3c)), (Tp(Me2))CpY[SC(CH2Ph)NPh] (4), (Tp(Me2))CpY[OC(CH2Ph)NPh] (5), and (Tp(Me2))CpY(S2CCH2Ph) (6) in 40-70% isolated yields. Carbodiimides and isothiocyanate can also insert into the Y-C(alkynyl) sigma bond of 2 to yield complexes (Tp(Me2))CpY[(RN)(2)CC CPh] (R = Pr-i(7a), Cy(7b)) and (Tp(Me2))CpY[SC(C CPh)NPh] (9). Further investigation results indicated that 1 can effectively catalyze the cross-coupling reactions of phenylacetylene with carbodiimides. However, treatment of o-allylaniline with a catalytic amount of 1 gave only the benzyl abstraction product (Tp(Me2))CpY(NHC6H4CH2CH=CH2-o)(THF) (10), without observation of the expected organic hydroamination/cyclization product. All of these new complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic properties, and their solid-state structures were also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract:The Schiff-base (2-aminoethyl)hydroxybenzoic acid (H(2)L) as a proligand was prepared in situ from 3-formylsalicylic acid and ethanolamine (ETA). The mononuclear {[Y(HL)(4)][ETAH]·H(2)O} (1) and {[Dy(HL)(4)] [ETAH]·3MeOH·H(2)O} (2) and tetranuclear {[Y(4)(HL)(2)(L)(4)(μ(3)-OH)(2)]·4MeOH·4H(2)O} (3), {[Dy4(HL)(2)(L)(4)(μ(3)-OH)(2)]·5(MeOH)(2)·7H(2)O (4), and {[Dy(4)(HL)(8)(L)(2)]·4MeOH·(2)H(2)O}(5) rare-earth metal complexes of this ligand could be obtained as single-crystalline materials by the treatment of H(2)L in the presence of the metal salts [Ln(NO(3))(3)·(H(2)O)m] (Ln = Y, Dy). In the solid state, the tetranuclear compounds 3 and 4 exhibit butterfly structures, whereas 5 adopts a rectangular arrangement. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry data of the ionic compounds 1 and 2 support single-crystal X-ray analysis. The yttrium compounds 1 and 3 show fluorescence with 11.5% and 13% quantum yield, respectively, whereas the quantum yield of the dysprosium complex 4 is low. Magnetic studies on the dysprosium compounds 4 and 5 suggest the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between neighboring metal centers. Compound 4 shows single-molecule-magnet behavior with two relaxation processes, one with the effective energy barrier U(eff) = 84 K and the preexponential factor τ(0) = 5.1 × 10(-9) s.

Abstract:The crystal and molecular structure of Yb(C5H5)2·(CH3COCHCOCH3) has been determined by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The crystal is triclinic with space group P1, a 8.694, b 9.298, c 19.948 Å, α 100.08, β 91.89, γ 102.36°, V 1475.9 Å3, and Z = 4 to give ρcalc 1.81 g cm−3. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to an R factor of 0.028 based on 3961 independent reflections. The results showed that the crystal consists of discrete molecules of Yb(C5H5)2·(CH3COCHCOCH3) and no direct interaction exists between Yb atoms. The YbO bond distances average 2.219 Å. The average YbC(η5) bond distance is 2.611 Å.

Abstract:The trivalent lanthanide metallocenes Cp(3)Ln (Cp=C5H5, Ln=Dy or Yb) react with thiols, HSR (R=CH2CH2CH3 or CH2CH2CH2CH3) to give the dimeric complexes [Cp(2)Ln(mu-SR)](2) (R=CH2CH2CH3; Ln=Dy (1) or Yb (2)) (R=CH2CH2CH2CH3; Ln=Dy (3) or Yb (4)) in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. They have been characterized by elemental analysis and mass spectroscopy or H-1 NMR spectra, indicating that they are dimers bridged through the sulphide atoms of thiolate ligands, Crystals of 4 are monoclinic, of space group P2(1)/a with a = 8.928(3), b = 17.620(7) and c = 9.208(4) Angstrom, beta = 103.94(3)degrees, V = 1405.8(9) Angstrom(3), Z = 2 and D-c = 1.85 g cm(3). The structure was refined by the full-matrix least-squares method to a conventional R factor of 0.039, for 1868 data with I > 3 sigma(1). The Yb2S2 unit is planar, and the geometry about the ytterbium atom is pseudotetratledral although Be geometry is pyramid at sulfur so that the n-butyl groups are anti relative to the Yb2S2 ring. The average Y-C(Cp) and Yb-S bond distances are 2.59(1) and 2.708(3) Angstrom respectively. It was found that these complexes are thermally unstable and tend to decompose into Cp(3)Ln species upon heating.
