Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a strongly quasi-local version of the coarse Novikov conjecture, which states that certain assembly map from the coarse K-homology of a metric space to the K-theory of its strongly quasi-local algebra is injective. We prove that the conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry which can be coarsely embedded into Banach spaces with Property (H), introduced by Kasparov and Yu. Besides, we also generalise the notion of strong quasi-locality to proper metric spaces and provide a (strongly) quasi-local picture for K-homology.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the equivariant coarse Novikov conjectures for spaces that equivariantly and coarsely embed into admissible Hilbert-Hadamard spaces, which are a type of infinite-dimensional nonpositively curved spaces. The paper is split into two parts. We prove in the first part that for any metric space $X$ with bounded geometry and with a proper isometric action $\alpha$ by a countable discrete group $\Gamma$, if $X$ admits an equivariant coarse embedding into an admissible Hilbert-Hadamard space and $\Gamma$ is torsion-free, then the equivariant coarse strong Novikov conjecture holds rationally for $(X, \Gamma, \alpha)$. In the second part, we drop the torsion-free assumption for $\Gamma$ in the first part. We introduce a Miscenko-Kasparov assembly map for a proper $\Gamma$-space $X$ with equivariant bounded geometry, which leads to a new Novikov-type conjecture that we call the analytic equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture. We show that for a proper $\Gamma$-space $X$ with equivariant bounded geometry, the rational analytic equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture holds for $(X,\Gamma,\alpha)$ if $X$ admits an equivariant coarse embedding into an admissible Hilbert-Hadamard space, i.e., the Miscenko-Kasparov assembly map is a rational injection.

Abstract:Let X=⨆n=1∞Xn be the coarse disjoint union of a sequence of finite metric spaces with uniform bounded geometry. In this paper, we show that the coarse Novikov conjecture holds for X, if X admits a fibred coarse embedding into a simply connected complete Riemannian manifold of non-positive sectional curvature. This includes a large class of expander graphs with geometric property (T).

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the strong relative Novikov conjecture for any pair of groups that are coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space. As an application, we show that the relative Novikov conjecture on the homotopy invariance of relative higher signatures holds for manifolds with boundary, provided the fundamental groups of the manifolds and their boundary are coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space.

Abstract:We study an operator norm localization property and its applications to the coarse Novikov conjecture in operator K-theory. In particular, we introduce a sufficient geometric condition (called metric sparsification) for the operator norm localization property. This is used to give many examples of finitely generated groups with infinite asymptotic dimension and the operator norm localization property. We also show that a sequence of expanding graphs does not possess the operator norm localization property.

Abstract:The notions of operator norm localization property and finite decomposition complexity were recently introduced in metric geometry to study the coarse Novikov conjecture and the stable Borel conjecture. In this paper we show that a metric space X has weak finite decomposition complexity with respect to the operator norm localization property if and only if X itself has the operator norm localization property. It follows that any metric space with finite decomposition complexity has the operator norm localization property. In particular, we obtain an alternative way to prove a very recent result by E. Guentner, R. Tessera and G. Yu that all countable linear groups have the operator norm localization property.

Abstract:. We introduce an asymptotic coarse structure on proper metric spaces and study the associated C * -algebras and assembly maps. We establish an asymptotic Lipschitz homotopy invariance theorem for the K -theory of these C * -algebras and the K -homology of the metric space, and show that the assembly map is an isomorphism over an asymptotically scaleable space.

Abstract:We introduce a new notion of embeddability between Banach spaces. By studying the classical Mazur map, we show that it is strictly weaker than the notion of coarse embeddability. We use the techniques from metric cotype introduced by M. Mendel and A. Naor to prove results about cotype preservation and complete our study of embeddability between $\ell_p$ spaces. We confront our notion with nonlinear invariants introduced by N. Kalton, which are defined in terms of concentration properties for Lipschitz maps defined on countably branching Hamming or interlaced graphs. Finally, we address the problem of the embeddability into $\ell_\infty$.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the embeddability of subspaces of the Gromov-Hausdorff space, which consists of isometry classes of compact metric spaces endowed with the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, into Hilbert spaces. These embeddings are particularly valuable for applications to topological data analysis. We prove that its subspace consisting of metric spaces with at most n points has asymptotic dimension $n(n-1)/2$. Thus, there exists a coarse embedding of that space into a Hilbert space. On the contrary, if the number of points is not bounded, then the subspace cannot be coarsely embedded into any uniformly convex Banach space and so, in particular, into any Hilbert space. Furthermore, we prove that, even if we restrict to finite metric spaces whose diameter is bounded by some constant, the subspace still cannot be bi-Lipschitz embedded into any finite-dimensional Hilbert space. We obtain both non-embeddability results by finding obstructions to coarse and bi-Lipschitz embeddings in families of isometry classes of finite subsets of the real line endowed with the Euclidean-Hausdorff distance.

Abstract:Inspired by the quantitative $K$-theory, in this paper, we introduce the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with filtered coefficients which generalizes the original conjecture. The are two advantages for the conjecture with filtered coefficients. Firstly, the routes toward the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture also work for the conjecture with filtered coefficients. Secondly, the class of metric spaces that satisfy the conjecture with filtered coefficients is closed under products and yet it is not known for the original conjecture. As an application, we show some new examples of product metric spaces for the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that for a metric space $X$ and a finite group $G$ acting on $X$ by isometries, if $X$ coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space, then so does the quotient $X/G$. A crucial step towards our main result is to show that for any integer $k > 0$ the space of unordered $k$-tuples of points in Hilbert space, with the $1$-Wasserstein distance, itself coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. Our proof relies on establishing bounds on the sliced Wasserstein distance between empirical measures in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of equivariant coarse cohomology of the complement of a subspace in a metric space. We use this cohomology to define a notion of coarse cohomology of the configuration space of a metric space and develop tools to compute this cohomology under certain conditions. As an application of this theory, we show that certain classes in the coarse cohomology of configuration space obstruct coarse embedding between two metric spaces.

Abstract:Inspired by group cohomology, we define several coarse topological invariants of metric spaces. We define the coarse cohomological dimension of a metric space, and demonstrate that if G is a countable group, then the coarse cohomological dimension of G as a metric space coincides with the cohomological dimension of $G$ as a group whenever the latter is finite. Extending a result of Sauer, it is shown that coarse cohomological dimension is monotone under coarse embeddings, and hence is invariant under coarse equivalence. We characterise unbounded quasi-trees as quasi-geodesic metric spaces of coarse cohomological dimension one. A classical theorem of Hopf and Freudenthal states that if G is a finitely generated group, then the number of ends of G is either 0, 1, 2 or $\infty$. We prove a higher-dimensional analogue of this result, showing that if F is a field, G is countable, and $H^k(G,FG)=0$ for k<n, then $\dim H^n(G,FG)$=0,1 or $\infty$, significantly extending a result of Farrell from 1975. Moreover, in the case $\dim H^n(G,FG)=1$, then G must be a coarse Poincaré duality group. We prove an analogous result for metric spaces.

Abstract:The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. In particular, we disprove the conjecture that the separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. The rigidity result follows from a new concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the infinite Hamming graphs and taking values in $T^*$, and from the embeddability of the infinite Hamming graphs into Banach spaces that admit spreading models not isomorphic to $c_0$. Also, a purely metric characterization of finite dimensionality is obtained.

Abstract:We define for families of finite metric spaces quantitative assembly map estimates that take into account propagation phenomena for pseudo-differential calculus. We relate these estimates to the Novikov conjecture and we show that they fit nicely under coarse decompositions. As an application, we provide a geometric proof of Novikov conjecture for groups with finite decomposition complexity.

Abstract:In this paper we study two properties viz. property-$U$ and property-$SU$ of a subspace $Y$ of a Banach space which correspond to the uniqueness of the Hahn-Banach extension of each linear functional in $Y^*$ and in addition to that this association forms a linear operator of norm-1 from $Y^*$ to $X^*$. It is proved that, under certain geometric assumptions on $X, Y, Z$ these properties are stable with respect to the injective tensor product; $Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $Z$ if and only if $X\otimes_\e^\vee Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X\otimes_\e^\vee Z$. We prove that when $X^*$ has the Radon-Nikod$\acute{y}$m Property for $1<p< \infty$, $L_p(\mu, Y)$ has property-$U$ (property-$SU$) in $L_p(\mu, X)$ if and only if $Y$ is so in $X$. We show that if $Z\subseteq Y\subseteq X$, where $Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X$ then $Y/Z$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X/Z$. On the other hand $Y$ has property-$SU$ in $X$ if $Y/Z$ has property-$SU$ in $X/Z$ and $Z (\subseteq Y)$ is an M-ideal in $X$. It is observed that a smooth Banach space of dimension $>3$ is a Hilbert space if and only if for any two subspaces $Y, Z$ with property-$SU$ in $X$, $Y+Z$ has property-$SU$ in $X$ whenever $Y+Z$ is closed. We characterize all hyperplanes in $c_0$ which have property-$SU$.

Coarse entropy of metric spaces

Abstract:Coarse geometry studies metric spaces on the large scale. The recently introduced notion of coarse entropy is a tool to study dynamics from the coarse point of view. We prove that all isometries of a given metric space have the same coarse entropy and that this value is a coarse invariant. We call this value the coarse entropy of the space and investigate its connections with other properties of the space. We prove that it can only be either zero or infinity, and although for many spaces this dichotomy coincides with the subexponential--exponential growth dichotomy, there is no relation between coarse entropy and volume growth more generally. We completely characterise this dichotomy for spaces with bounded geometry and for quasi-geodesic spaces. As an application, we provide an example where coarse entropy yields an obstruction for a coarse embedding, where such an embedding is not precluded by considerations of volume growth.
