Abstract:The theories of mass transfer and reaction in porous medium were applied to investigate the gasification of graphite by water vapor in reactor. Based on several logical assumptions, the gasification of graphite by water vapor was investigated. Different shapes of graphite were analysed: semi-infinite blocks, planks and cylinders. Analysis reveals that the reaction rate varies with the location, which can explain the intense gasification that occurs at upstream during experiments. The temperature dependence of the reaction rate expressed different ranges. At low temperatures, the reaction rates depend greatly on the reaction temperature, and the influence of shape is more pronounced. At high temperatures, the dependence weakens due to the limit of gas transfer, and the influence of shape disappears. The water vapor pressure at exterior surface decreases with temperature, but the pressure gradients (both inside and outside of porous media) increases with temperature. For the platelike and cylindrical porous media, the reaction rate decreases with the thickness or radius because of the increase in specific surface. When the penetrating depth of water vapor is larger than the half-thickness or radius of porous media, the water vapor would cumulate in porous media so that the pressure of reacting gas increases.
Investigation on Linear Description of the Char Conversion for the Process of Supercritical Water Gasification of Yimin Lignite

Abstract:Lignite gasification in supercritical water has been proved an efficient and clean utilization because of high gas yields. Char conversion process is the rate-determining step for lignite gasification in supercritical water, therefore, the accurate description of the conversion process is of great importance for the reaction optimization. Special attention was paid on the progress of char conversion in the process of lignite gasification. Quartz tube reactor was employed to avoid undesired catalytic effect of the reactor wall and Yimin lignite was choose as feedstock. The experiments were conducted with the operating range of temperature 650-850 degrees C with 5%-25% concentration. To improve accuracy of kinetic models, volatile and fixed carbon conversion was treated individually. Lignite conversion was simulated by random pore model, non-reacted core model and homogeneous model respectively and volatile process was expressed as a modification based on the data obtained by thermogravimetric analysis. The calculation results showed that the model with non-reacted core model fit coal gasification in supercritical water best and the average error was 3.18%. (C) 2016 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Influence of Torrefaction on Biomass Gasification Performance in A High-Temperature Entrained-Flow Reactor

Abstract:In the present work, the gasification performances of two pairs of raw and torrefied biomasses, including raw forest residue and torrefied forest residue, and raw spruce and torrefied spruce in a high-temperature entrained-flow reactor, are numerically examined and compared to each other using a Eulerian-Lagrangian CFD model developed based on OpenFOAM. Moreover, the sensitivities of three important operating parameters (excess air ratio, steam/carbon molar ratio, and biomass particle diameter), which vary in the range of practical significance, are also tested. The calculated results are analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively by five indicators: isothermal profiles, char consumption rate, gas compositions, species yield, and carbon conversion along the reactor length. The obtained results show that torrefied biomass can increase the maximum temperature in the reactor as compared to its raw parent fuel. During gasification, CO, H-2, and CO2 are the major species in the product gas and CH4 accounts for only a very small fraction of the syngas at such a high operating temperature of 1400 degrees C. As expected, the higher the excess air ratio, the lower the H-2 yield and higher CO2 production and carbon conversion; a rise in the steam/carbon molar ratio promotes the H-2 yield but reduces the CO production; and both the H-2 and CO yields and carbon conversion decrease with increasing particle diameter. In addition, three reaction zones can be recognized from the carbon conversion along the reactor length, and such information is useful for optimal reactor design. In all cases, torrefaction consistently reduces both the H-2 production and carbon conversion as compared to its raw biomass under the same operating conditions, which suggests that torrefied biomass requires a bigger length entrained-flow gasifier or longer particle residence time to achieve the same level of conversion as that for its raw biomass.

Abstract:This study focuses on determining intrinsic kinetic parameters and interpreting and simulating the rate profile. First, reactivity of coal char prepared at different temperatures was analyzed. Results showed that when coal pyrolysis temperature increases, coal char reactivity decreases; however, activation energy for coal char conversion does not always increase. Next, the weight loss process in non-isothermal conversion was discussed, and results illustrated that the weight loss mechanisms differ in each stage. The weight loss at the second stage was slightly influenced by residual volatile matter and gas diffusion, and the activation energy at this stage was close to an intrinsic value. Meanwhile, discussions on the effects of kinetic analysis methods in determining activation energy showed that Friedman and advanced isoconversional methods can obtain a true activation energy profile, whereas the Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose method was unsuitable. The rate profiles of isothermal conversion were then studied. The results demonstrated that occurrence of a maximum was an inherent feature but the "gas change" operation could shift or even cover up the true position of the maximum. Moreover, an increase in particle temperature could intensify the maximum value but slightly shift its position. Finally, an intrinsic reaction model that combines random pore model and the derived intrinsic kinetic parameters properly reproduced the rate profile of isothermal conversion (e.g., maximal conversion deviation was less than 5%).

Abstract:The coal gasification reactivity in the syngas (H2O, CO2, H2andCO) was carried out in a fixed-bed tube reactor at atmospheric pressure. The effect of reaction temperature, raw gas composition and coal amount on gaseous products composition and carbon conversion rate was studied. The experimental results indicated that the CO flow rate increased significantly, while H2flow rate increased a little under the experimental conditions. The reaction between CO2 and coal char was inhibited significantly. The effective gas (CO+H2) concentration of syngas was able to increase through the reaction and its largest increase was 3.3% in the experimental conditions. The inhibition effect of CO and H2 and the competitive effect between H2O and CO2were obvious. The maximum coal reaction rate in the mixture gas was only 49% and 69% of the maximum coal reaction rate in pure gasification agent (H2O, CO2) in 1100℃ and 1300℃, respectively. The effect of diffusion and adsorption in the pore on the gasification reaction was obvious in the syngas. The random pore model was suitable for the experimental conditions. However, the volumetric reaction model and core shrinking model were poor in fitting of data.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification of coal (SCWGC) has great potential for converting coal into CO2 and H2 effectively and environmentally. For a better technological competitiveness, the conversion mechanism of carbon structure needs to be investigated in depth to achieve 100% carbon conversion for SCWGC under mild conditions. Ningxia anthracite (NX), Hongliulin bituminous coal (HLL) and Zhundong lignite (ZD) were selected as feedstock to investigate the carbon microstructure evolution for different ranks of coal gasification in supercritical water (SCW). Raman and XRD spectra were employed to investigate the carbon microstructure information of solid residues. The experimental results illustrated that coal rank had slight effect on the evolution law of carbon microstructure in coal. The process of SCWGC included three stages depending on the characteristic reactions. Inhibiting the condensation of aromatic rings under 550–750 °C in the third stage was the key to effectively control the ordered conversion and achieve complete conversion of carbon in the coal. Besides, the Raman and XRD spectral parameters had close relationship with carbon gasification efficiency, respectively.

Abstract:The structural characteristics and reactivity of char derived from lignite were studied to explore the mechanism of char gasification and existence of a maximum reaction rate under an atmosphere of CO2 and H2O in a pressured thermogravimetric analyzer system. Gasification was carried out at temperatures of 1123, 1173, and 1223 K. When the temperature was below 1173 K, the mechanism of char gasification in the mixture of H2O and CO2 proceeded through the separate active sites assumption, whereas if the temperature was higher than 1173 K, it favored common active sites. The reaction rate increased and then decreased during the remaining time, which was in agreement with the total surface area. The existence of a maximum reaction rate depended highly on the surface area: a larger surface area resulted in a higher reaction rate. The total surface in H2O was the largest and the addition of CO2 inhibited the formation of pores. The reaction of char with CO2 mainly took place on the microporous surface first, and then took place on a mesoporous surface, and the reaction of char with H2O took place on both the micro- and mesoporous surfaces simultaneously.

Abstract:The optimization of multiple factors for gasification performance using a 3D CFD model with advanced sub-models for single-stage drop tube coal gasification was compared with experimental results. A single-stage down-drop gasifier with multiple coal injectors and a single oxygen injector at the top of the gasifier was investigated at different temperatures and O2/coal ratios. A finite rate/eddy dissipation (FR/ED) model was employed to define the chemical reactions. Kinetic data for the various reactions were taken from previous work. The realizable k–ε turbulent model and Euler–Lagrangian framework were adopted to solve the turbulence equations and solid–gas interaction. First, various preliminary reactions were simulated to validate the reaction model with experimental data. Furthermore, various cases were simulated at various O/C ratios and wall temperatures to analyze the syngas species, temperature profile in the whole gasifier, exit temperature, carbon conversion, turbulent intensity, and velocity profile. The maximum CO was found to be 75.06% with an oxygen/coal ratio of 0.9 at 1800 °C. The minimum and maximum carbon conversions were found to be 97.5% and 99.8% at O/C 0.9 at 1200 °C and O/C 1.1 at 1800 °C, respectively.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification technology has bright prospects because it can convert biomass into hydrogen-rich gaseous products in an effective and clean way. The devolatilization process is relatively fast, and char conversion is the rate-determining step in the whole gasification process. To discuss the kinetic model of char gasification in supercritical water, the quartz tube reactor was adopted as the reactor to omit the undesired catalytic effect of the reactor wall and bamboo charcoal was selected as typical char as a result of the low volatile content. The experiments were investigated within the operating range of temperatures of 700-900 degrees C and residence times of 5-20 mm. The experimental results were analyzed within the framework of homogeneous, non-reacted core, and random pore models. Dependences of the carbon gasification rate, residence time, and temperature were described in an assumption of the first-order reaction and the Arrhenius dependence. The calculation results showed that the random pore model fit the char gasification process in supercritical water best and the activation energy was 125.43 kJ/mol.
Gasification Reactivity of Rapid and Slow Pyrolyzed Shenfu Chars with CO2 at High Carbon Conversions and Elevated Temperatures

Abstract:The gasification reaction characteristics of coal chars with CO_2 at high carbon conversion were investigated by means of an isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis at ambient pressure and at temperatures from(1200℃) to 1400℃.The effects of gasification temperatures, heating rate and pyrolysis temperature on the gasification reactivity of coal chars were examined.The gasification reactivity of rapid pyrolyzed chars is found to be higher than that of slow pyrolyzed chars,and the general gasification reactivity of chars increases with gasification temperature.The gasification rate of rapid pyrolyzed chars is almost the same at gasification temperatures from 1300℃ to 1400℃.In addition,the ranges of the average apparent activation energies of slow and rapid pyrolyzed chars at the carbon conversion between 90% and 98% are 59.64kJ/mol～105.92kJ/mol and(34.47kJ/mol～40.87kJ/mol),respectively,which indicates that the gasification reactions have been controlled by gas diffusion.
Analysis of Gasification Performance of a Texaco Gasifier Based on Presumed PDF Model

Abstract:Based on CFD software Fluent, a 3-d simulation was conducted on a Texaco gasifier with boundary fitted coordinate system. Pre PDF model was use to predict species profile with β function. A UDF (user defined function) function was introduced to simulate heterogeneous reactions between char and O2, H2O, CO2 and H2. Effects of some industrial operation parameters, such as coal slurry oxygen, [C]/[O] and particle diameters, et al, on the gasification performance were analyzed. The coal conversion rate (CC) is 32% during coal combustion with O2 process, while the total CC is 95%, which shows that heterogeneous reactions of char with H2O, CO2 and H2 plays an important role in the whole gasification. CC is inverse proportional to the particle size. The CC is only 72% when the particle diameter is 175μm. Operation temperature is the most important parameters that affects gasification process. As the slurry concentration increases, the mole fraction of CO increases quickly while the mole fraction of H2O and CO2 drops sharply, H2 mole fraction drops a little at the same time. When [O]/[C] atom ratio increases, H2 mole fraction decreases sharply while CO and CO2 mole fraction almost doesn't change. Both outlet temperature and CC are proportional to coal slurry concentration and [O]/[C] ratio. Cold gas efficiency is proportional to coal slurry concentration. The peak value of cold gas efficiency appears when the [O]/[C] ratio is 1 to 1.05.

Abstract:The isothermal gasification kinetics of bituminous coal char was investigated within 1173-1373 K range. Also, the impacts of gasification temperature, gas composition, and gasification time on gasification process were analyzed. As the results of experiments suggest, there is a significant rise for the carbon conversion degree of bituminous coal char when gasification temperature and gasification time increase, but also when ratios of CO2/H2O decrease. Kinetic studies were also carried out. It is concluded that the gasification of bituminous coal char is controlled by internal chemical reaction in the early stage and diffusion in the later stage. Moreover, we studied the activation energy of various gas atmosphere and stages of gasification. Finally, our research shows that that reaction rate constant rises when the ratio of CO2/H2O rises. It is proposed that the diffusion-control step is significantly shortened with the decrease of CO2/H2O ratio. As SEM results suggest, bituminous coal char gasified in H2O atmosphere has numerous inner pores (0-10 mu m). Therefore, in the process of gasification, the inner bore provides a gas channel, which reduces the gas diffusion resistance and thus shortens the diffusion control step. These results can serve as a reference to the industrialized application of the technology of coal gasification-direct reduction iron.
Experimental Analysis of the Evolution of Soot Structure During CO2 Gasification

Abstract:The morphology and nanostructure evolution during gasification was examined for a coal-derived soot and, to permit comparisons to other research, two carbon black samples. The investigation examined four different conversion extents at 1273 and 1473 K. The primary particle diameter decreased significantly during the initial stage and then changed slowly. The gasification behavior varied with the initial nanostructure and treatment temperature. At 1273 K the consumption behavior followed a hybrid mode comprised of shrinking core and homogeneous reaction models. However, at 1473 K, a previously unobserved gasification behavior occurred with the soot forming concentric spheres. Here the gasification progressed by initially forming micropores, followed by insufficient permeation of oxidant with the subsequent consumption of the core, ultimately forming hollow particles. Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns indicated there was a transformation from initially ordered to less well-ordered structure. Partial gasification induced disordering to different extents, accompanied by a slight maturing associated with thermal annealing. The crystallites were preferentially consumed along the graphitic edges for coal-derived soot. At the start of gasification, the density of the soot increased but subsequently declined. Abundant micropores with multimodal distributions were newly generated and continually developed during gasification.
Experimental study on optimizing reaction path for promoting the gasification of coal in supercritical water

Abstract:Coal gasification in supercritical water (SCW) has great potential in industrial application for converting coal into hydrogen-rich gas in a clean and efficient manner. However, when the reaction conditions are improperly coupled with reaction path, undesirable side reactions would take place, which is prone to reduce the efficiency of converting coal into hydrogen-rich gas. It is revealed that the condensation of aromatic structures and the formation of aromatic ether (C-ar-O) groups are the restrained reactions according to the reaction path obtained by studying the variation of gas-liquid-solid products during supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of coal. Methanol, Fe2O3 and Ni(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O are added to inhibit the restrained reactions. It is found that these all facilitate the cracking and gasification of aromatic structures. Fe2O3 and Ni(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O except methanol, reduce the formation of C-ar-O groups effectively. The optimal concentration of these corresponding to the greatest promotion is 7.5 wt% (methanol), 2.5 wt% (Fe2O3) and 2.5 wt% (Ni(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O), respectively. Ni (CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (2.5 wt%) has the highest promotion on the production of H2 and CO, as well as the cracking and gasification of aromatic structures. The corresponding maximum yields of H-2 and CO increase by 0.29 and 1.85 times, respectively. Fe2O3 (2.5 wt%) has the greatest promotion on the decomposition of C-ar-O groups, and the relative content of C-ar-O groups decreases by 80.86%. This research provides the theoretical basis for regulating the ordered conversion of coal into hydrogen-rich gas during SCWG of coal.
Effect of particle size on gasification of char with different coal ranks

Abstract:Eight coal chars of different coal ranks were prepared to investigate the effects of coal rank, reaction temperature and particle size on char-CO2 gasification using a thermogravimetric analyzer ( TGA) . The variation of char-CO2 gasification rate with carbon conversion was studied, especially at high conversion stage. As a result, the crystalline structures of higher rank chars are more orderly, resulting in a lower gasification rate. For high rank coals like anthracite, the CO2 gasification rate of char with 40μm size is about 7 times higher than that with 300μm size to reach 95% conversion at 1300℃. For low rank coals, particle size has little effect on the gasification rate. The results indicate that the effect of particle size on char-CO2 gasification is dependent on coal rank. The specific surface area of high rank coals is much smaller than that of low rank coals, which contributes to the significant effect of particle size on high rank coal gasification. The effect of gasification temperature and particle size on gasification rate for high rank coals is more significant than that for low rank coals.
Experimental Investigation on the Influence of the Pyrolysis Operating Parameters Upon the Char Reaction Activity in Supercritical Water Gasification

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification of coal is a clean and efficient method for coal utilization which can convert coal into H-2 and CO2. In order to further reduce costs, a novel two-step cascade utilization method was proposed in this study: conducting traditional pyrolysis first and then gasifying the pyrolysis char in supercritical water. The influences of different pyrolysis operating parameters on gaseous products and char gasification in supercritical water were investigated. Quartz tube reactors were used to ensure the complete collection of gaseous products in pyrolysis process. The experimental results showed that both carbon and hydrogen conversion efficiency increased with temperature, and the increasing trend became not obvious after reaction for 5 min. The thermogravimetric curves showed that volatilization removal process was completed at the pyrolysis time of 5 min and higher pyrolysis temperatures were beneficial to the subsequent gasification process. The result also showed that residual weight was 15%-20% of the initial weight. Hydroxyl radicals kept stable during pyrolysis process with the absorption peak intensity increasing first and then decreasing, and mineral substance disintegrated gradually as time increased. As pyrolysis temperature increased, the peak of C-C double bonds decreased, turning into stable functional groups and carbonyl group increased. Dispersive pores occurred at the surface of coal as residence time increased with particle size decreasing, specific surface area and reactivity increasing. Abstract:Lignite and coffee char-CO2 gasification had been studied via thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) at the heating rate of 15–25 K/min and the CO2 partial pressure range of 0.02–0.08 MPa. The relationship between gas partial pressure and reaction rate was explored in non-isothermal gasification. The results showed that there was a certain reaction order relationship between different CO2 partial pressures and reaction rate at a constant heating rate in non-isothermal gasification. When the heating rate was 15–25 K/min, the reaction order of coffee grounds char (CGC) was 0.14–0.36 in the char conversion range of 0.3–0.8. The reaction order of the lignite char (LC) was basically the same in the range of char conversion of 0.3–0.8, about 0.15±0.01.

This study used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to systematically evaluate the reaction path of steam gasification. The research results indicate that a graphite model edge without active cites is more suitable for use as an initial model for steam gasification. The aromaticity of the graphite model edge and the desorption of CO are linearly related. H atoms from H2O are transferred to the graphite model edge, destroying the aromaticity of the edge carbon structure and facilitating the subsequent desorption process, which may be the cause of the higher reactivity of steam compared to CO2 gasification. From a thermodynamic perspective, hydrogen transfer may be the rate-determining step of the overall reaction. The results of this paper can explain the kinetic differences in previous experiments that used water with varying isotopes of H (H2O vs D2O) and graphite in the gasification reaction (Yates and McKee, 1981; Mims and Pabst, 1987; Fletcher and Thomas, 2007). Our results provide new insights into the H transfer mechanism in steam gasification.
Gasification Kinetics of Bituminous Coal Char in the Mixture of CO2, H2O, CO, and H-2

Abstract:The gasification kinetics of bituminous coal char was investigated in a mixture of CO2, H2O, CO, H2, and N2 under isothermal conditions. In addition, the impacts of gasification temperature, gasification time, and gas composition on the gasification process were analyzed. As the experimental results suggest, there is a significant increase of the carbon conversion degree of bituminous coal char not just when gasification temperature and time increase, but also when H2 and CO concentration decreases. The kinetics of bituminous coal char in the gasification process was successfully modeled as a shrinking unreacted core. It is concluded that the gasification of bituminous coal char is controlled by an internal chemical reaction in the early stage and diffusion in the later stage. The activation energies of bituminous coal char gasification for different stages were studied. Moreover, it is proposed for the first time, to our knowledge, that the diffusion-control step is significantly shortened with the decrease of the CO2/H2O ratio. As scanning-electron-microscopy results suggest, bituminous coal char gasified in CO2/H2O = 1/3 atmosphere has numerous inner pores (0–5 m). Therefore, in the process of gasification, the inner pores provide a gas channel that reduces the gas diffusion resistance and thus shortens the diffusion-control step. These results can serve as a reference for industrialized application of the technology of coal gasification direct reduced iron.

Abstract:In the computational particle fluid dynamics method, a numerical model of a three-dimensional circulating fluidized bed (CFB) air-water vapor mixture was established. This model facilitated an investigation of the characteristics of the biomass gasification process in a CFB gasifier. This study systematically examined the impact of variables such as fluidized gas velocity, gasification temperature, air equivalent ratio, and water vapor ratio on the spatial distribution characteristics of the gasification products. The results indicated that the increase in the fluidized gas velocity was correlated with a gradual reduction in the combustible gas concentration at the gasifier outlet. The increase in gasification temperature led to a decrease in CH 4 content at both the furnace and gasifier outlets. Meanwhile, the CO and H 2 content increased at these locations. A more balanced component distribution was observed at a gasification temperature of 1073.15 K. Moreover, increasing the air equivalent ratio resulted in a decrease in the flammable gas content at the furnace and gasifier outlet, enhancing a more uniform component distribution at an air equivalent ratio of 0.26.
