Abstract:Research molecular component characteristics and characteristic ratios of n-alkanes, isoprenoid, Unresolved Complex Mixtures (UCM) and sterane of sediment core P7327 in the Chukchi Sea. Results show that component characteristics of n-alkanes at most sections are similar; bimodal pattern shows dual contribution of terrigenous and marine sources. High-carbon hydrocarbon/low-carbon hydrocarbon ratio (H/L) of n-alkanes in sediment core (1-121 cm) is 0.299 similar to 1.326, C-27/C-19 ratio is 1.392 similar to 7.565, lipoid ratio TAR and ACL are 1.015 similar to 5.531 and 0.930 similar to 7.610 respectively. These 4 parameters further show that, sources from terrigenous higher plants and marine sources (lower algae, fungi and submerged plants) coexist in modern sediments of the Chukchi Sea. Researches also show that Carbon Preference Index (CPI) of sediment core (7-184 cm) is 1.208 similar to 1.664, close to 1; pristane/phytane ratio (pr/ph) is low at most sections; a lot of Unresolved Complex Mixtures (UCM) prevail in the samples; U/R ratio is 2.2-4.3. These 3 parameters show that petroleum hydrocarbon with high maturity is input, and subject to biodegradation later. According to intact n-alkanes series and obvious UCM coexistence in sediment core P7327 of the Chukchi Sea (in particular, carbon chain length of n-alkanes in 182-184 cm sediment is obviously shorter than that of other sections), sterane isomerization parameter C(29)20S/(20S + 20R) and C-29 beta beta/(beta beta+alpha alpha) is 0.37-0.47 and 0.45-0.53 respectively, which reach or close to isomerization balance end point and belong to a mature range. Different from contemporary sediments, maturity of organic matters perhaps mean that, contemporary sediments of the Chukchi Sea may be mixed with petroleum source. These petroleum hydrocarbons may come from leaked oil and gas reservoirs in the deep sea (including pollution from human activities), and may be affected by microbial action of bacteria.
