Abstract:Why are the product design of the Apple Inc. are so successful in the dog-eat-dog market? One of the most important reasons is that the mental imageries of product user experience design of Apple Inc. are close to the user's expectant material mental imageries.In this study, we want to gain the main mental imageries of information product materials user experience design of the target users(18-28 years old university students or the recent graduates in the east of China) in the near future of the next 1-2 years. We used Culture Scan, Contextual Inquiry, Semantic Differential Method, and the Coordinate of Mental Imagery to study. We discovered that the main mental imageries of information product materials user experience design of the target users in the near future of the next 1-2 years are high-technological and fashionable. We built a bridge from the the material mental imagery of the user to the material mental imagery of the designer. The actual demand of the consumers could be more easily understood by the company.

Abstract:The perception of education will influence the learning and teaching process and achievement. The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of the undergraduate industrial design core courses. First, 32 students and 9 instructors were interviewed to collect the qualitative data for formulating the framework. The framework consisted of seven scales, including Image, Motivation, Objectives, Activities, Resources, Evaluation, and Future Development. Then, the questionnaire was designed according to the framework. There were 406 students and 24 instructors participating in the survey. The Results demonstrated that students’ perceptions are similar to instructors. The major difference is the degree of perception. The main differences of the perceptions are on the learning process/method and career development.

Abstract:China’s design education has not developed as fast and well as the economy. Instead, problems such as blindly imitating foreign design education, failing to deeply develop students’ potential, and failing to develop students’ design thinking have emerged. Since the industrial revolution, design has been repeatedly defined and revised at different times. Similarly, design education needs to be constantly discussed in combination with the country, era, culture and population. Colleges and universities should not train “hand-drawn/modeling machines”, but let every student find himself and know human beings; Have empathy for others, insight into the environment, and confidence to use your strengths. Because design and education have to deal with people, it means that they don’t have to follow a process, summarize a method to get the truth. Teachers, students and designers have been involved in adjusting cognition to find more responsive answers to this era.

2020 Vision - The UK Design Industry Ten Years On

Abstract:‘2020 Vision’ was a research project funded by EPSRC/AHRC as part of the ‘Designing for the 21st Century Initiative,’ developing design research over a five-year period from 2005-2009. It investigated the threats and opportunities for the UK design industry over the next ten years, together with UK design industry body British Design Innovation. This book chapter, co-authored with Cooper and Evans of Lancaster University and Williams of Salford, disseminates the key findings of the project. It focuses on the distinctive needs of the UK design consultancy sector. The research was conducted in three stages: extensive literature review, preliminary focus groups; future scenarios developed in consultation with a panel of experts from different political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal fields; and interviews and workshops on the impact of the various scenarios with three sets of stakeholders – design practitioners and design consultancies, design buyers/clients (private and public sector), and government, design association and HE representatives. These sessions explored the threats and opportunities posed by each scenario, to identify new, more appropriate models of practice. The research was complemented by a survey of designers and subsequent cluster analysis of survey findings. The findings present a model of the business context for design that identifies the driving forces in the market. Aspects identified for further attention include: revising design education, a single professional body for accreditation, encouraging design companies to radically rethink their business models. The report has been widely referenced, e.g. Spencer et al. 2012 for UK Intellectual Property Office; Lalaounis et al. Design Journal 15(3); Alexiou et al. Embracing Complexity in Design, Routledge 2009. It led to industry and policy workshop with delegates from Design Council, NESTA, the RDAs and design commentators. Related work includes a conference paper for D2B2 Tsinghua International Design Management Symposium 2009, in Beijing, China.

Abstract:Purpose Previous research has evidenced that communication design students wish to engage further with sustainable practices but struggle to understand how (Newton and Ellis, HER conference 2023). Whereas other design disciplines (fashion, product, furniture) can often focus on a "physical" output, communication design embraces multiple outcomes, distributed throughout a range of platforms, representing an area of industry and study which can prove difficult to define. This study aims to add further clarity as to how students consider sustainability aligned to their practice. Design/methodology/approach Previous focus group research sought to uncover how communication design students implicitly consider "sustainability", uncovering that their knowledge is limited. Suggestions from participants emphasised that it was the role of the institution, not the student, to fully integrate sustainability into practice and to define methods they can deploy. This paper notes a subsequent workshop conducted with 33 Level 5 undergraduate students asking them to reflect on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12/13 in relation to meaningful practice and institutional responsibility. Findings Workshops demonstrated the need to engage with sustainable thinking throughout every stage of development. It is clear that students demand more from academic staff at programme level, and from the institution at large, to provide further solutions to sustainability concerns which are relevant to their specific practice. Originality/value Discussion surrounding pedagogical practice across communication design lacks interrogation, yet the discipline represents a significant aspect of both design and contemporary society. It is paramount that methods for reinforcing implicit engagement with sustainable best practice within students, their development and their future beyond university are therefore developed.

Abstract:The quality of course design has been a significant concern in the reform of higher education. The compe-tency of instructional designers played an important role in improving teaching efficacy and students’ achievements. However, empirical studies on college teachers’ instructional design competency are scarce. Based on theoretical ana-lyses and experts’ consultations, this project was to develop a questionnaire to explore college teachers’ instructional design competency. The questionnaire consists of five dimensions:designing instructional objectives;designing instruc-tional contents;instructional implementation;front-end analysis and instructional evaluation. In addition, the study also investigated college teachers’ instructional cognitive ability and knowledge system. The study intended to learn how much college teachers know about the instructional design competency and what potential factors influence the de-velopment of the instructional design expertise. The study was a random survey among the universities in Zhejiang and Shanghai. Total 192 valid responses are collected via electronic and printed questionnaires. Upon variance, relevance and regression analysis, the key finding is:To some extent, the overall level of college teachers’ instructional design competency is unsatisfactory. Although the competency of instructional implementation is sufficient, the competency of instructional evaluation need to be developed. The noticeable difference between the novices and experts are in areas of designing instructional contents and instructional objectives. College teachers’ instructional cognitive abilities have in-fluential impacts on their instructional design competency. In addition, college teachers’ knowledge system can par-tially predict their development of competency of instructional design. In conclusion, the study attempted to provide the following suggestions to teachers and educators. There is an im-balance in five defined areas of college teachers’ instructional design competency. Especially, teachers’ competency in instructional evaluations need to be strengthened urgently. The administration should emphasize customized profession-al development and targeted training based on teacher’ s experience and professional status. Professional development should incorporate a real-world environment for the instructional design training. Scaffolding in a supportive learning community might be an effective approach to the development of teachers’ instructional design competency as well.
Preliminary Study on Students’ Experiences in Design-Based Interdisciplinary Learning

Abstract:Design is a crucial component of enterprise innovation. Due to rapid changes in society, the economy, and science and technology, design problems are becoming increasingly complex, making it necessary to integrate professional knowledge and technology of different domains into design education. Hence, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate learning problems in design-based interdisciplinary education, examine the learning resources used by students to overcome learning problems, and identify the causes of those problems. In this study, 24 students participating in design-based interdisciplinary courses/activities engaged in focus group discussions. The data were transcribed, and we used Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software to conduct open coding and clustering according to grounded theory and to construct a model of interdisciplinary learning problems. This paper provides new insights into the learning process for multidisciplinary design. Moreover, it offers a reference to enable design teachers to plan interdisciplinary design courses and students to participate in interdisciplinary learning, thus improving teaching effectiveness in interdisciplinary design education and establishing a foundation for future related research.
Comparative study of industrial design undergraduate education in China and USA

Abstract:Abstract Industrial design (ID) undergraduate education in China is seen as a new rapidly growing discipline over the past 40 years. China’s ID education is not well known in the West due to several barriers: language, the Great Firewall of China which blocks out most of the Western websites and a 12-h time difference. All Chinese ID curriculum and program information are available in Mandarin. The Ministry of Education administers all Chinese design education as well as ID scholarships and faculty exchange grants and its website and documents require translation. The Great Firewall of China blocks 90% of Western websites including Google making it difficult for Western Scholars to access accurate information about the size and shape of the Chinese ID education landscape. China has a historical relationship between the ID schools in China and the United States. Chinese students are studying or alumni of every American ID program. China and USA share similar program types, dual-track admissions for art and design streams, and academic calendars. In this paper, a model was developed to clarify the features of ID undergraduate education in China and USA, and a survey of eight ID schools was processed. Four aspects were comparatively discussed: (1) types of ID education, (2) ranking, evaluation, and certification of ID schools and programs, (3) curriculum, credits, course features, and yearly schedules of schools, (4) influences coming from the culture and globalization process. Based on the analysis, the similarities and differences in ID undergraduate education between the two countries are discussed. Results show the dual-track modes in China and USA are different. It is mainly reflected in the management and enrollment, curriculum organization, and cultural environment. Implications for the localization, openness, and globalization to ID education are finally discussed together with several directions for future development. The findings are valuable to USA and Chinese ID departments and faculty, researchers, staff and visiting scholars. It is also useful for university administrative units such as registrars, admissions, international offices and exchanges to understand each other.

Abstract:Traditionally, design – and by extension design education – has focused on the creation of distinct outputs (forms, artefacts, and objects) that satisfy a specific purpose and need. Historically these needs – and often the designed outputs themselves – have been dictated not by the designer but by clients and also through established disciplinary practices. Design was broadly framed as a commercial industry, where a client needed something (a poster, a chair) and the designer provided the requested output. Design education practices grew out of a master‐apprentice approach, where students often learned by recreating idealized outputs repetitively. This didactic and skills‐acquisition approach was sufficient when design focused on distinct fields (e.g., graphic, industrial, or fashion design), specific outputs, and traditionally understood challenges. As the field of design has expanded – in the scope of practice, the complexity of challenges tackled, and the range of collaborators – there is a need to re‐examine our pedagogy. Traditional design education approaches are insufficient for the role that design needs to play in the 21st century. In this paper, I argue that a critical consideration of this re‐examination is the reframing of a central tenet of design education, which is the production of outputs. Instead, what is needed is a re‐focus considering the outcomes of design practice – the processes involved, and the effects of our design actions and artefacts. I identify seven principal and interconnected factors that drive the need for this shift in focus.

Abstract:Design as an overarching pedagogical framework has been regarded by some as the avenue to re-envision general education to develop capabilities required for twenty-first century citizens. However, despite the adoption of design thinking within other domains, generic design-based education for lifelong learning remains largely unexplored. A comprehensive review of literature on educating a workforce for the knowledge economy, and the role of design in business and educational innovation, has been conducted to create a new approach to building a culture of practice for design-led education, based on the theory of the Innovation Matrix. This study proposes ‘design-led educational innovation’ as a new area of research which requires a deeper understanding of the knowledge, skills and mindsets students require to thrive in the twenty-first century and beyond as lifelong learners in informal and formal education contexts. The findings provide an opportunity to explore dynamic theories and methodologies borrowed from within the field of design-led innovation in business that will broaden the horizons of design-led education, challenging existing practices to transform educational institutions as knowledge creation organisations. This is the first paper to introduce the Design-led Education Innovation Matrix, providing a prototype design-led framework to assist educators in developing and assessing twenty-first century knowledge, skills and mindsets. In addition, it identifies related future research areas for academia, thereby extending the reach and scope of this emerging research area.

Industrial Design education in Australia: a competence analysis across primary, secondary and tertiary education levels

Abstract:Industrial Design education is poorly understood by laypeople but is present in Australian curricula from primary through to tertiary education levels. Designers and design researchers have long recognised the value of the broad-ranging skills, knowledge fields, and personal qualities design education imparts, but this understanding is generally not shared by the wider community who may see design as surface decoration. This research identifies indicators of value and relevance taken from the twenty-first century competences literature, then measures their presence in four different Industrial Design education settings. Two studies were undertaken. First, Industrial Design educators from primary, secondary, and tertiary levels were surveyed. Then diverse Industrial Design education stakeholders from education and non-education settings were interviewed. The studies gathered both quantitative and qualitative data on the value and relevance of current Industrial Design education in Australia. The result is a comprehensive analysis of the twenty-first century competences present in Australian Industrial Design education, which concludes with recommendations for ways Industrial Design education can benefit twenty-first century learners, as well as ways it should evolve to remain relevant.

Abstract:Traditional and currently-prevalent pedagogies of design perpetuate ableist and exclusionary notions of what it means to be a designer. In this paper, we trace such historically exclusionary norms of design education, and highlight modern-day instances from our own experiences as design educators in such epistemologies. Towards imagining a more inclusive and sustainable future of design education, we present three case studies from our own experience as design educators in redesigning course experiences for blind and low-vision (BLV), deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students, and students with other disabilities. In documenting successful and unsuccessful practices, we imagine what a pedagogy of care in design education would look like.

Abstract:Social innovation leads to more diverse methods for design education, which helps design education response to social trends and needs. Social change has brought about the transformation of teaching objects for design education courses, which can provide the public with more opportunities to recognise and understand design. Through the introduction of the ADDIE (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation) model in teaching design pattern through social innovation, this paper explores the system design construction of a design education course. Using the teaching practice for the course “Three-dimensional Composition” in the product design major at Tianjin University of Technology as an example and relying on a process of analysing, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating, this paper launches a design plan for design education courses. Students’ learning satisfaction is used to measure the course design, and the latest course works of applied research results in 2020 will be displayed to show students’ self-confidence and satisfaction after class. The research described in this paper attempts to construct the teaching design of design courses based on the ADDIE model. It is intended to analyse the multi-dimensional connection of design education: meeting the expectations of college students seeking to acquire design knowledge and social experience, cultivating students’ interest, and enhancing their design achievement and confidence. Moreover, this paper seeks to shed light on ways to reform design course teaching so that the design education results are more in line with the needs and expectations of the times and society.

A study of industrial design students' employment preparation and choices in Taiwan

Abstract:This study surveys industrial design (ID) students' employment preparation in Taiwan, including career awareness, competency required, working attitudes and values and vocational choices. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were adopted and data were collected in three stages: literature review, in-depth interviews and questionnaire survey. The findings show that approximately 37 per cent of 904 participants decide not to enter the ID profession after graduation. ID students' career awareness is fairly good in terms of knowledge, values, preferences and self-concepts, but approximately one-fourth of the surveyed items received low mean ratings. The students' awareness of some of the job tasks and competencies required of industrial designers does not match the reality, and their perception of the lifestyle tends to be unrealistically negative, which is an observation not previously reported in the literature. The above, perhaps unrealistically negative, perception might be related to the high proportion of students rejecting an industrial design career after graduation. The authors discuss these results in the contexts of the national and international design employment markets. The findings could help design educators to understand what information needs to be provided to ID students, and help plan career guidance programmes.

Abstract:The article attempts to consider how key competencies are formed in the process of teaching design disciplines in the UK at each stage of education from kindergarten to higher education, taking into account the requirements of the labor market, as well as how the problems of introducing new competencies and developing basic educational standards for productive development are solved at the state and business level. The article examines step-by-step the processes of competence formation at different stages of training, as well as examines the difficulties and failures faced by design education in the UK and ways to solve the difficulties that can be adopted by Russian design education. Thus, the purpose of the study is to extract useful experience in the formation of key competencies in design education in the UK and bring Russian design education closer to practical, responding to the needs of modern society, since design is policy and strategy for managing industries that uses creativity and innovation as a way of designing the future. It is a methodology used to solve complex problems and find the desired solutions for customers by integrating innovations. Undoubtedly, the author is interested in conducting a comparative analysis of the implementation of design education in the EU countries and in economically developed America, which in the future will be a continuation of research in the field of design education in Russia in order to integrate the positive experience of training future designers abroad into the domestic education system.
A systematic literature review on co-design education and preparing future designers for their role in co-design

Abstract:As emphasised by various researchers, the role of designers is now less about 'designing for' and more about 'designing with' users and other stakeholders. The main reason behind this shift relates to the importance of the active involvement of 'people with lived experience' in co-design. Now, designers are also expected to facilitate the active participation of non-designers in co-design processes. However, it is noted that the importance of co-design and the role of designers in co-design have not been widely integrated into design education. Thus, a systematic literature review is conducted to find out the necessity and prevalence of co-design education in higher education programmes and its instructional methods. This paper presents the outcomes of the review of seventeen ( n = 17) studies, published between 2007 and 2021, analysed through thematic analysis via NVivo. The findings of this study shed light on the necessity, structure, and challenges of co-design education, as well as evaluation, gaps, and opportunities in this area. Specifically, the significance of motivating students to acquire the necessary mindset for co-designing, which can potentially initiate a meaningful co-design process through game-based approaches and self-learning, is underlined.
