Abstract:•Polyethylene filled with ytterbium trifluoromethanesulfonate was prepared.•A low Yb loading improved thermal stability of PE obviously by radical trapping.•Yb(OTf)3 is expected to be an efficient thermal stabilizer for the polymer.
