Abstract:The environmental behaviours of actinides and fission products have been highly concerned due to their potential risks to human beings after entering the body through inhalation or food chains. The chemical reactions of actinides and fission products at mineral-water interface are the most important factors influencing the sorption, diffusion, migration and other processes of actinides and fission products in natural environments. Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate the chemical behaviours of these radioactive elements or nuclides in terms of environmental safety, especially in the area of safety assessment for geological disposal of high level radioactive wastes. However, the chemical behaviours of nuclides at mineral-water interface are complex and the investigations at a molecular level are challenging. To understand the chemical behaviours of trivalent actinides An(III) in depth, non-radioactive Eu(III) is used as an analogue of An(III) due to their similar ionic sizes and chemical characteristics. In this study, batch sorption experiments and spectroscopic characterization methods were used to study the surface sorption species of Eu(III) on montmorillonite and possible sorption mechanisms. We studied the effects of solid-liquid ratio, contacting time, ionic strength, pH, carbonate and phosphate on Eu(III) sorption on montmorillonite. Our results indicated that the sorption percentage of Eu(III) on montmorillonite was low in the range of pH 3.0 to 6.0, and much higher in the range of pH 7.0 to 10.0. The increase of ionic strength inhibited the sorption of Eu(III) at low pH values, suggesting that the sorption of Eu(III) on montmorillonite was mainly outer-sphere complexation in low pH conditions. Based on the results of fluorescence analysis, we can conclude that the sorption of Eu(III) on montmorillonite is mainly outer-sphere complexation in low pH conditions, inner-sphere complexation in neutral pH conditions and surface induced precipitations in high pH conditions. Furthermore, we studied the sorption behaviours of Eu(III) not only in montmorillonite/Eu(III) binary system but also in montmorillonite/Eu(III)/anion ternary system. Our results indicated that carbonate and phosphate could also influence the sorption of Eu(III). Carbonate did not have an obvious influence on the sorption amount of Eu(III), but it helped to change the surface sorption species of Eu(III) on montmorillonite in high pH conditions. As for phosphate, although the sorption of phosphate onto montmorillonite was very weak, it could significantly enhance the sorption of Eu(III) on montmorillonite. Because there were no reference data about fluorescence lifetime of Eu(III)-phosphate species, we did XPS measurements and phosphate sorption experiments to find out the reason for phosphate enhancing effect. Our results proved that Eu(III) precipitated as EuPO4 on the surface of montmorillonite resulting in the enhancement of Eu(III) sorption. This work is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the chemical behaviours of trivalent actinides An(III) at mineral-water interface and predict the migration of An(III) in the environment.

Abstract:Using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as a molecular modifier, a novel macroporous silica-based 4,4',(5')-di-(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6) polymeric composite (DtBuCH18C6+TBP/SiO2-P) was synthesized. It was done by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and TBP molecules into the pores of SiO2-P particles utilizing an advanced vacuum sucking technique. The adsorption of 10 fission and non-fission products Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III), Mo(VI), Na(I), K(I), Pd(II), La(III), Cs(I), and Y(III) onto (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P was investigated by examining the influence of contact time and the HNO3 concentration in a range of 0.1-5.0M at 298 K. It was found that at the optimum concentration of 2.0M HNO3 (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P exhibited strong adsorption ability and high selectivity for Sr(II) over all of the tested elements, which showed very weak or almost no adsorption except Ba(II). Moreover, the quantity of DtBuCH18C6 leaked from (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P in 2.0M HNO3, 326.2 ppm, was obviously lower than 658.4 ppm that leaked from DtBuCH18C6/SiO2-P. This was ascribed to the effective association of DtBuCH18C6 and TBP through intermolecular interaction, i.e., hydrogen bonding. The significant reduction of DtBuCH18C6 leakage by molecular modification with TBP was achieved. It was of great benefit to application of the (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P polymeric composite in chromatographic partitioning of Sr(II), one of the main heat generators, from high level liquid waste (HLLW) in reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel in MAREC process developed recently.

Abstract:Adsorption of Th4+ on peat by batch method was studied.Effects of solution pH value,ionic strength and Th4+ concentration on adsorption were examined.The results showed that adsorption of Th4+ on peat was strongly affected by pH values and weakly depended on ionic strength.The kinetic process of adsorption could be described by the Langmuir equation excellently.Adorption of Th4+ was mainly dominated by surface complexation.

Abstract:Due to the similar chemical properties of actinides An(III) and lanthanides Ln(III), their separation in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing is extremely challenging. A 1,10-phenanthroline dipicolinamide-based ligand (PhenBHPPA) has been identified to possess a selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) and could potentially be used for group actinide extraction. In this study, quasi-relativistic density functional theoretical calculations have been used to disclose the interaction mechanisms of Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with PhenBHPPA. The electronic structures, bonding nature, QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) analyses and thermodynamic behaviors of the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with PhenBHPPA have been explored in detail. According to the Wiberg bond indices (WBIs) and QTAIM analyses, interactions between the ligand and metal cations (Am(III) and Eu(III)) exhibit a weakly covalent character. Thermodynamic analyses show that the charged complexes [ML(NO3)(2)](+) appear to be the most stable species in the complexation processes. Moreover, it is more energetically favorable for PhenBHPPA to bind to Am(III) compared to Eu(III). Our study could render new insights into understanding the selectivity of the ligand towards minor actinides and the separation of An(III) from Ln(III) via liquid-liquid extraction.
Competitive adsorption of uranium(VI) and thorium(IV) ions from aqueous solution using triphosphate-crosslinked magnetic chitosan resins

Abstract:The triphosphate-crosslinked magnetic chitosan resins (TPP-MCR) with a diameter range of 200–350 nm were synthesized for the adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption experiments were conducted in both mono-component systems with pure actinide solution and bi-component systems with different U/Th mass ratios. The maximum adsorption capacities in mono-component systems determined by Langmuir model were 169.5 and 146.8 mg g −1 for U(VI) and Th(IV), respectively. In bi-component systems, U(VI) and Th(IV) adsorption capacities were reduced significantly, and the combined sorption capacities were substantially lower (almost halved) compared to those obtained by the addition of sorption capacities using mono-component solutions, indicating that U(VI) and Th(IV) compete for the same sorption sites. Adsorption–desorption experiments for five cycles illustrated the feasibility of the repeated use of TPP-MCR for the adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) ions.

Abstract:The complexation of Ln(III) with tributyl phosphate (TBP) in the presence of dibutyl phosphate (HDBP) is of importance for the smooth operation of the plutonium uranium refining extraction (PUREX) process. The Lime resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) and extraction experiments were employed to study the complexation of Eu(III) with TBP or HDBP and their mixture. The emphasis was on the inner-sphere hydration numbers and emission spectra of the Eu(III) extracted complexes. The results show that the HNO3 loading in the organic phase influences not only the distribution ratio but also the emission spectra, as well as the hydration numbers of the complexes. For the Eu-TBP complexes, one water molecule remained at low HNO3 loading in the organic phase, and it would be removed at enhanced HNO3 loading. For the Eu-HDBP complexes, one water molecule remained at low or high HNO3 loading. For the Eu-HDBP/TBP or Eu-HDBP/30%TBP, more than one species formed and third phase with different chemical form appeared at low HNO3 loading. The possible species of Eu(III) complexes formed under various conditions were proposed and discussed.

Abstract:The triethylene-tetramine modified magnetic chitosan sorbents (TETA-MCS) were synthesized for the adsorption of Th(IV) ions from aqueous solution. FTIR analysis indicated that the amine and hydroxyl groups of TETA-MCS were involved in the adsorption process for the formation of O, N–Th(IV) complex. Th(IV) adsorption was pH dependent and the maximum adsorption was observed at pH 4.0. The adsorption kinetic data could be interpreted by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data were correlated with the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was 133.3 mg Th(IV)/g at 25 °C. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the feasibility, spontaneity and endothermic nature of adsorption. The sorbents were successfully regenerated using 0.2 M HNO3−0.1 M EDTA and exhibited good reusability.

Abstract:The structure of the extraction complexes of light lanthanides (La(III), Nd(III), Eu(III)) with bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid (HBTMPDTP) have been characterized with extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), IR, and MS; the IR spectrum of the extraction complex of (241)Am with HBTMPDTP has been studied too. The molecular formula of the extraction complexes of lanthanides is deduced to be HML(4).H(2)O (M = La, Nd, Eu; L = anion of HBTMPDTP). The coordination number of Ln(III) in the complexes is 8; the coordinated donor atoms are 7 sulfur atoms from 4 HBTMDTP molecules and 1 O atom from a hydrated water molecule. With the increase of the atomic number of Ln, the coordination bond lengths of Ln-O and Ln-S decrease in the complexes. For La(III), Nd(III), and Eu(III), the coordination bond lengths of Ln-O are 2.70, 2.56, and 2.50, respectively, the coordination bond lengths of Ln-S are 3.01, 2.91, and 2.84, respectively, and the average distances between Ln and P atoms are 3.60, 3.53, and 3.46, respectively. The structure of the extraction complexes of Ln(III) with HBTMDTP is different from that of the Am(III) extraction complex. The results of IR show that there is no water coordinated with Am in the extraction complex. The molecular formula of the complex of Am(III) is deduced as being HAmL(4), and there are 8 S atoms from 4 HBTMPDTP molecules coordinated with Am. Composition and structure differences of the extraction complexes may be one of the most most important factors affecting the excellent selectivity of HBTMPDTP for Am(III) over Ln(III).
Tremendous impact of substituent group on the extraction and selectivity to Am(III) over Eu(III) by diaryldithiophosphinic acids: experimental and DFT analysis

Abstract:Comparative extraction of Am 3+ over Eu 3+ from nitric acid media by three dithiophosphinic acids (L) bearing different substituent aryl groups was studied. Within the experimental pH range, the distribution ratio of Am 3+ and Eu 3+ increases with the increase of pH due to deprotonation of the acidic extractant. Both the extraction and separation ability toward Am 3+ /Eu 3+ by these extractants were affected drastically by the substituent aryl groups. The bis-phenyl substituted extractant shows almost no ability to extract and separate Am 3+ from Eu 3+ , while bis( ortho -trifluoromethylphenyl) dithiophosphinic acid has the optimum extraction and separation capabilities. To help reveal the complexation and extraction behavior, the structure and bonding characters of neutral ML 3 (M = Am or Eu) complexes as well as the biphasic extraction reaction were studied by density functional theory (DFT). The conduct-like screening model implicit solvation model was used to simulate the extraction reaction in the aqueous-toluene biphasic system. The calculated sequence of the Gibbs free energy difference of extraction (ΔΔG ext Am/Eu ) is consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:Knowledge of the geochemical behavior of europium is important for the safe disposal of radioactive wastes. Complexing inorganic anions are ubiquitous in repository environments and can affect europium adsorption behaviors significantly. This work comprehensively studied the Eu(III) adsorption on rutile in the presence of complexing inorganic anions. Our results indicated that sulfate and carbonate had a negligible impact on Eu(III) adsorption, while phosphate could strongly enhance the adsorption. The spectral results suggested that phosphate would enhance Eu(III) adsorption by forming a phosphate-bridged complex on rutile surface under acidic conditions, while promoting adsorption by surface precipitation under alkaline conditions.

Abstract:In the present work, the titanate nanotubes (TNTs) were synthesized via the hydrothermal approach and the phytic acid decorated TNTs (PA/TNTs) were prepared by using the one-pot method. Batch technique was adopted to explore the removal performance of TNTs and PA/TNTs towards Eu(III) under various environmental conditions. At pH4.0 and 5.5, the sorption of Eu(III) on TNTs decreased with increasing NaNO3 concentration, while the removal of Eu(III) by PA/TNTs was independent of ionic strength. The saturated Eu(III) sorption capacities of TNTs and PA/TNTs were calculated to be 9.52×10−4 and 9.57×10−4mol/g at pH5.5 and 298K, being higher than a variety of previously reported adsorbents. PA/TNTs also exhibited high selectivity for capturing Eu(III) from a simulated wastewater containing multiple competing metal ions. According to the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), solid fluorescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the predominant removal mechanisms of TNTs and PA/TNTs towards Eu(III) at pH5.5 were ion exchange/outer-sphere surface complexation and inner-sphere surface complexation, respectively. These experimental findings demonstrated the wide application prospects of TNTs and PA/TNTs for the highly efficient purification of Eu(III)-bearing wastewater.
Theoretical Study of Am(III) and Eu(III) Separation by a Bipyridyl Phosphate Ligand

Abstract:Actinide An(III) and lanthanide Ln(III) are known to exhibit similar chemical properties; thus, it is difficult to distinguish them in the separation of highly radioactive waste liquids. One potential method to efficiently separate actinides and lanthanides involves the design and development of phosphorus-oxygen-bonded ligands with solvent extraction separation. Here, a bipyridine phosphate ligand with two isopropyl and phosphate groups is introduced to selectively extract actinides. The electronic structure, bonding properties, thermodynamic behavior, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) of Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with the bipyridine phosphate ligands were analyzed by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The analysis demonstrates that the Am-N bond exhibits stronger covalent characteristics than the Eu-N bond, indicating that the bipyridine phosphate ligand had better selectivity for Am(III) than for Eu(III) in terms of binding affinity. The thermodynamic analysis established the complex [ML(NO3)2(H2O)2]+ as the most stable species during the complexation process. The results indicate great potential for utilizing the bipyridine phosphate ligand for the effective separation of An(III)/Ln(III) in spent fuel reprocessing experiments.

Abstract:To minimize the long-term radiological risk and improve the accuracy of radioactive analysis, isolation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides is very necessary and much more challenging due to their similar chemical properties. Herein, the adsorption performance and mechanism of a novel porous BCPDTPA/SiO 2 -P extraction resin towards trivalent actinides (Am) and lanthanides (Eu) was investigated. The effects of adsorption parameters such as contact time, HNO 3 concentration, temperature, and Eu concentration on the adsorption were conducted by batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption mechanism of Am(III) and Eu(III) by BCPDTPA/SiO 2 -P resin was elucidated based on kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms analysis. The results showed that BCPDTPA/SiO 2 -P resin has a high affinity for Am(III) compared to Eu(III) within the range of experimental conditions. Kinetic studies revealed that the resin was in accordance with the pseudo-second order equation by chemisorption as the rate-limiting step of the adsorption process. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic process. The adsorption isotherm followed the Freundlich isotherm model. As a result, the use of BCPDTPA/SiO 2 -P resin as a stationary phase for chromatographic separation of actinides(III)/lanthanides(III) can be expected due to its clear adsorption mechanism and selectivity.

Abstract:The extraction of tracer amount of Am~(3+) and Eu~(3+) from different aqueous media by bis(2,4,4-trimethyl) dithio phosphinic acid(HBTMPDTP)/n-dodecane was studied.The results show that in the solutions of LiNO_(3),NaNO_(3) or KNO_(3),the different cations show no remarkable effect on the extraction of Am~(3+) and Eu~(3+);in the aqueous solutions containing NaNO_(3),Na_(2)SO_(4),NaClO_(4),NaCl or NaBr,the different anions affect the extraction of Am~(3+) from Eu~(3+) and their separation to some extent.In the solutions of LiNO_(3),NaNO_(3),KNO_(3),NaCl or NaBr,HBTMPDTP has a good ability to separate Am~(3+) from Eu~(3+) with a separation factor that is more than 10~3.Lower separation factor of about 50 and 500 are obtained in Na_(2)SO_(4) and NaClO_(4) aqueous solutions,respectively.

Abstract:Separation of trivalent actinides (An(III)) from trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) is a challenging task because of the nearly identical chemical properties of these groups. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA), a key reagent used in the TALSPEAK process that effectively separates An(III) from Ln(III), is believed to play a critical role in the An(III)/Ln(III) separation. However, the underlying principles for the separation based on the difference in the complexation of DTPA with An(III) and Ln(III) remain unclear. In this work, the complexation of DTPA with Cm(III) at 10-70 degrees C was investigated by spectrophotometry, luminescence spectroscopy, and microcalorimetry, in conjunction with computational methods. The binding strength, the enthalpy of complexation, the coordination modes, and the luminescence properties are compared between the Cm(III)-DTPA and Eu(III)-DTPA systems. The experimental and computational data demonstrated that the difference between Cm(III) and Eu(III) in the binding strength with DTPA can be attributed to the stronger covalence bonding between Cm(III) and the nitrogen donors of DTPA.

Abstract:Pillared montmorillonite (P-MMT), organic montmorillonite (O-MMT), layered double hydroxide (LDH) and layered double oxide (LDO) were prepared. Their adsorption performance on Cr (VI) was measured. The result shows that adsorbent capability (AC) of P-MMT and O-MMT is 8.9 and 3.7 mg/g respectively; both of them can be attributed to physical adsorption. Their surface characters, i.e., hydrophilic P-MMT versus hydrophobic O-MMT, are quite possibly responsible for the difference in AC. LDO's AC on Cr (VI) is 73 mg/g at room temperature, much higher than that of the other materials. After the adsorption, LDO's XRD pattern changes apparently, similar to the one of LDH. This demonstrates that LDO took anions from the solution to recover the crystal structure of LDH, and that the adsorption is chemical one. Theoretical AC of LDO on Cr (VI) calculated from the reaction formation is 152 mg/g. pH variation during the adsorption was observed. pH of the solution increased rapidly at the first few minutes, slowly from 5 to 180 minute, decreased a bit after that. The first two phases indicate the adsorbing progress, and the last one is quite possibly related with the interference of dissolved CO2. There are two ways to restrain the activity Of CO2, increasing Cr (VI) content and/or decreasing CO2 content. In the solution being boiled and isolated from air, LDO's AC on Cr-.(VI) can be as high as 157.1 mg/g. The part above the theoretical AC can regard as the contribution of physical adsorption.

Abstract:A bio-adsorbent (DAWP-PEI-β-CD) was facilely prepared by introducing polyethylenimine (PEI) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) into dialdehyde waste paper (DAWP) via a facile two-step method. The structures, morphologies and compositions of the as-prepared adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Results showed that the pH values, adsorption temperature and contact time played a vital role in uptake of Eu(III) and Au(III). Meanwhile, the adsorption behavior of Eu(III) and Au(III) could be fitted felicitously with the Langmuir and the pseudo-second-order models, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Eu(III) (pH = 6.0) and Au(III) (pH = 2.0) onto DAWP-PEI-β-CD were 424.2 and 241.3 mg/g, respectively. Further advanced spectroscopy analysis revealed that the elimination of Eu(III) was attributed to host-guest inclusion and surface complexation interaction, while adsorption of Au(III) might stem from a combination of electrostatic attraction, chelation, host-guest inclusion and redox interaction. This study demonstrated that DAWP-PEI-β-CD was a promising environmental functional material to separation and enrichment of Eu(III) and Au(III) from contaminated water.

Abstract:The Cu 3 (BTC) 2 (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) was synthesized by water/solvent heat method. The Cu 3 (BTC) 2 was characterized by SEM/EDS, Zeta potential and XRD. Batch static adsorption experiments investigated the various factors affecting the adsorption of Th(IV) in aqueous solution such as pH, solid–liquid ratio, contact time, initial concentration and temperature, and the adsorption mechanism is also discussed. The adsorption process was in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. At the same time, compared with other adsorbents. The results showed that Cu 3 (BTC) 2 had good adsorption for Th(IV) with a maximum adsorption of 757.58 mg g −1 .

Abstract:Knowledge of geochemical behaviors of Eu(III) in natural system is necessary for long-term safety assessment of deep radioactive waste repositories. The mobility or retention of the Eu(III) depends on its adsorption reaction at the mineral/water interface. Here, we studied the Eu(III) adsorption on rutile with batch experiments, zeta-potential analysis and time-resolved fluorescence spectra (TRFS). The results indicate that Eu(III) adsorption is controlled by outer-sphere interaction under acidic conditions, and transforms to inner-sphere interaction under neutral and alkaline conditions. A surface complexation model (SCM) from Rossendorf Expert System for Surface and Sorption Thermodynamics (RES3T) is successfully applied to describe the adsorption behavior of Eu(III) at the rutile/water interface with CHEMSPEC code. The good predictions indicate that the current SCM from RES3T could indeed be used for the estimation of Eu(III) adsorption on rutile surface, though it is not sensitive to the Eu(III) loadings. Overall, this work may provide valuable information on adsorption mechanism of Eu(III) at the rutile/water interface and help us understand the geochemical behaviors of Eu(III) in natural environments.

Abstract:The sorption and desorption of Eu (III) on H‐APC activated carbon using a batch technique has been studied as a function of carbon type, shaking time, initial pH solution, temperature, particle size of carbon, and concentration of the adsorbent and the adsorbate. The influence of different anions and cations on adsorption has been examined. The experimental data have been analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin sorption isotherm models and the adsorption data for Eu (III) onto activated carbon were better correlated to the Temkin isotherm and the maximum absorption capacities obtained was 46.5 mg g−1. Anions of phosphate, carbonate, oxalate, and acetate were found to increase the adsorption of Eu (III), whereas nitrate, chloride and all studied cations, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and aluminum have a negative effect on the adsorption capacity. More than 99% europium adsorbed on H‐APC eluted with 0.5 M HCl solution. The activated carbon prepared from apricot stone using 70% H3PO4 could be considered as an adsorbent that has a commercial potential for Eu (III) treatment.
