Abstract:•We mapped the spatial distribution of Beijing's carbon metabolism processes.•We analyzed the evolution of the pattern and the expansion of built-up areas.•Carbon emission decreased and sequestration increased from the center outwards.•Expansion of the core built-up area changed the carbon metabolism's distribution.•The distribution of the city's components affected its carbon metabolism.
