Abstract:•A clear distribution of water quality along an urban-to-rural gradient was identified in Shanghai.•All land uses and hydrological variables explained more than 50% of the variation of water quality.•The urban and industrial land uses had determinant impact on water quality.•The urban affected water quality at larger scale but the industrial only showed impact at riparian zone.
