Abstract:In this work, we report the formation of a novel, aqueous-based thermo-responsive, supramolecular gelling system prepared by a convenient and efficient self-assembly of a long-chain amino-amide and citric acid. To determine the viscosity behavior and to gain insights into the gelation mechanism, a complementary combination of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and sinusoidal oscillatory tests, were used. The supramolecular gelator exhibited remarkably reversible sol-gel transitions induced by temperature at 76 °C. At a concentration of 5 wt%, the zero-frequency viscosity of the supramolecular system increased by about four orders of magnitude (from 4.2 to 12 563 Pa s) by changing the temperature from 23 °C to 76 °C. The viscous nature of the supramolecular gel could be preserved up to 90 °C. The synergistic combination of the hydrogen bonding between amino and carboxylic acid groups and the electrostatic interactions arising from the protonation of the amino-group and the deprotonation of carboxylic acid groups enhanced at higher temperatures is presumably responsible for the thermo-responsive behavior. We anticipate that these supramolecular gelators can be beneficial in various applications such as hydrogel scaffolds for regenerative medicine, personal care products and cosmetics, and enhanced oil recovery as viscosity modifiers.

Abstract:A new type of dynamic covalent macrocycle with self-promoted supramolecular gelation behavior is developed. Under oxidative conditions, the dithiol compound containing a diamide alkyl linker with an odd number (7) of carbon chain and an appended crown ether shows a remarkable gelation ability in acetonitrile, without any template molecules. Due to the existence of crown ethers and disulfide bonds, the obtained gel shows a multiple stimuli-responsiveness behavior. The mechanical properties and reversibility of the gel are investigated. Computational modeling suggests that the peripheral chain for diamide hydrogen bonding is responsible for the gelation process.

Abstract:Through a good/poor solvent strategy, native folic acid (FA) which behaves as a super-gelator in DMSO-water system can be successfully employed to construct supramolecular gels. The system exhibited morphological evolution with the increase of FA concentration; various phases such as vesicles, fiber/vesicles, fiber/nanoparticles, nanoparticles were probed. In the self-assembly process, l-glutamic acid moiety induced the formation of helical 1-dimensional (1-D) fibers which further self-assembled into a gel. Stimuli like heat, stress, pH and light which affect the molecular structure of FA or solubility in the mixed solvents had a pronounced influence on the properties of the gels, such as mechanical properties or bulk phases. A time-dependent oscillatory stress scan indicated that the supramolecular gel had a self-healing property. Without tedious modification routes and addition of alkali metal ions, native FA which served as an efficient building block and super-gelator to build up multi-responsive and self-recovery material was investigated for the first time.

Abstract:4-(4'-Ethoxyphenyl)phenyl-beta-O-D-glucoside (1) was synthesized. A perfect crystal of I was obtained from all acetonitrile solution. In a mixture of water/1,4-dioxane (8/2, v/v), a gel formed at first and then collapsed into a needlelike crystal. The crystal and the gel were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis absorption, circular dichroism, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. It was found that the crystal formed from the gel had the same diffraction pattern Lis that of the single crystal from the acetonitrile solution, Suggesting identical molecular packing. In a monoclinic cell containing two molecules, molecules took a "T" arrangement with an antiparallel direction. In contrast, the diffraction pattern of xerogel from water/1,4-dioxane (8/2, v/v) displayed a d-spacing ratio of 1:1/2:1/3 (2.39, 1.18, and 0.78 nm), indicating an interdigitated bilayer structure. A molecular packing model from gel to crystal where molecular sheets would insert into each other with a glide movement was suggested, On the basis of the understanding of the deformation mechanism, ail additive was introduced to obtain a stable gel.

Abstract:Studies on supramolecular gel aggregates via supramolecular interactions are very fascinating and impressive. The interactions of gelator with solvent and inorganic salt can functionalize, activate, or control the properties of supramolecular gels. A lot of work on this area has been done, but all these contributions are only at an early stage. In this work, we tuned the gel formation conditions and properties by using low-molecular-weight gelator (LMWGs), amide-functionalized imidazolium-based surfactant, viz., N-cetyl-N'-acetamido imidazolium bromide ([N-C-16, N'-CONH2-Im]Br), in different solvents and with inorganic salt additives. Under chemical (Cu2+/H2O2) and physical (temperature) stimuli, gel-sol phase transition occurred in the gel formed from 2 wt% [N-C-16, N'-CONH2-Im]Br in the solvent formamide (FM). Accompanied with increased mechanical strength of the gels, morphology alternation from initial straight stripe-shaped structures to curly belt-like textures was observed in the addition of CuBr2. From Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements, bilayer units with interdigitated hydrocarbon tails of the gelator were testified to appear in the gels. Comparative experiments demonstrate that the It-It interaction, H-bonding, and hydrophobic interaction between the gelator molecules are the main driving forces for the gelation. The low-cost gelator, facile preparation, and coordination-driven assembly process make the robust gel a good candidate in various applications, such as material templates and drug deliveries. Abstract:A cross-linked supramolecular polymer network gel is designed and prepared, which shows reversible gel-sol transitions induced by changes in pH, temperature, cation concentration, and metal co-ordination. The gel pore size is controlled by the amount of cross-linker added to the system, and the material can be molded into shape-persistent, free-standing objects with elastic behavior. These features are all due to the dynamically reversible host-guest complexation and good mechanical properties of the cross-linked polymer network. No single organogel has previously been reported to possess all of these features, making this supramolecular gel an unprecedentedly intelligent soft material.

Abstract:Small molecule gels with different stimuli responsiveness are endowed with different characteristics. Due to the reversibility of non-covalent bond forces and the adjustability of the self-assembly process, small molecule gels are widely used as an intelligent soft material prospect. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel gelator, stigmasteryl glycinate ferrocenoylamide (SGF), which uses plant sterols as raw materials and has multi-stimulus response performance. The gelation behavior of SGF was investigated in different solvents. The properties and mechanism of self-assembly of gels were characterized by SEM, UV-VIS, FT-IR, CAT and XRD. The intermolecular hydrogen bond nature of the gel formation and the lamellar aggregation pattern of SGF gel are revealed. Interestingly, SGF/cyclohexane gel shows excellent responsiveness to a variety of external stimuli such as temperature, thixotropic force and redox. In particular, SGF has a specific recognition ability for methanol.

Abstract:A multi-responsive cyclodextrin-based organogel with a crystalline-like structure is first reported. An amount of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and lithium chloride (LiCl) was added into N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and the system obtained could transform instantly from a transparent solution into a gel state by introducing ethylene diamine (EDA), and then the gel could turn into another precipitate-like gel by undergoing a heating-cooling process. Among a series of aliphatic amines, only EDA was found to be able to induce the gel formation. Both the gels possess crystalline-like structures in their morphology with sheet-like layers, in a highly-ordered channel-type packing mode, which were proved by OM, SEM, XRD, and FT-IR measurements. Furthermore, the gel could respond to H(+) and Cu(2+) by transforming into an amorphous precipitate. This research may pave the way for the design of novel smart materials.

Abstract:Multi-stimuli responsive organogels based on low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) have attracted much attention due to their potential applications. Herein, the synthesis and the self-assembly behavior of a novel molecular gelator based on a tetrapeptide-dithienylcyclopentene conjugate is described. This gelator forms stable gels in THF, acetone and acetonitrile, in which the formation of anti-parallel beta-sheets of the biomimetic tetrapeptides is the key driving force. Further studies suggest that the organogel is multi-responsive to various external stimuli including temperature, light, chemicals, and mechanical force. Moreover, in the presence of catechol, this gelator forms a more robust organogel, accompanied by a dramatic change of the assembly manner and rheological properties. These prominent features of this conjugate make it an excellent smart soft material with potential applications in areas such as drug encapsulation and release systems.

Abstract:Self-assembly prevails in nature and learning from nature will lead to biofunctional materials. Inspired by the protein of elastin, we reported in this study on a supramolecular hydrogel bearing the elastin repeating peptide of VPGAG. The visco-elasticity property, morphology of the nanostructures, and aromatic stacking in the self-assembled nanostructure were characterized by a rheometry, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and fluorescence microscope, respectively. The biocompatibility of the gelator was also proved by an MTT assay. Though the supramolecular hydrogel failed to exhibit a high elasticity like elastin, the thixotropic hydrogel might have potentials for the applications in fields of cell culture, controlled-drug release, etc.

Abstract:A novel low-molecular-mass gelator containing a redox-active ferrocenyl group, cholesteryl glycinate ferrocenoylamide (CGF), was intentionally designed and prepared. It was demonstrated that the gelator gels 13 out of the 45 solvents tested. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements revealed that the gelator self-assembled into different supramolecular network structures in different gels. Chemical oxidation of the ferrocenyl residue resulted in phase transition of the gel from gel state to solution state. FTIR and (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies revealed that hydrogen bonding between the gelator molecules in the gel was one of the main driving forces for the formation of the gels.

Abstract:A supramolecular gel is obtained from the self-assembly of an ultralow-molecular-weight gelator (N-fluorenyl-9-methoxycarbonyl glutamic acid) in good and poor solvents. The gelators can self-assemble into a lamellar structure, which can further form twisted fibers and nanotubes in the gel phase. Rheological studies show that the gels are robust and rigid, and are able to rapidly self-recover to a gel after being destroyed by shear force. Fluorescence experiments reveal the aggregation-induced emission effects of the gel system; the fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced by gel formation. Graphene oxide (GO) is introduced into the system efficiently to give a hybrid material, and the interaction between gelators-GO sheets is studied. Rheological and fluorescent studies imply that the mechanical properties and the fluorescent emission of the hybrid materials can be fine-tuned by controlling the addition of GO.

Abstract:Gelation mechanism is of utmost importance to the rational design of supramolecular hydrogelators. Although both kinetic and thermodynamic controlled self-assembly processes have been widely studied in hydrogels, the formation relationship between crystalline and amorphous gel networks still remains ambiguous. Herein, a gelation transformation from a kinetic to a thermodynamic process was achieved by balancing the rigidity and flexibility of the inorganic-organic co-assemblies. By using polyoxometalates and zwitterionic amphiphiles, the transition morphologies between crystalline and amorphous hydrogel networks were evidenced for the first time, as ordered wormlike micelles. Given the versatile applications of hydrogels in biological systems and materials science, these findings may highlight the potential of inorganic-organic binary supramolecular hydrogelators and fill in the blank between kinetic and thermodynamic controlled gelation processes.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels and liquid crystals are two important organic soft materials in self-assembly systems. A series of new low-molecular-weight organic gels was synthesized by connecting two cholesterol molecules and two hydrophobic chains incorporating amide groups to a central tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (1a-l). Compounds 1a-l and their corresponding charge transfer complexes easily formed a stable supramolecular gel in various organic solvents and their self-assembly morphologies and structures were investigated. It was revealed that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction played important roles in the gelation process. More importantly, nearly half of the gelators exhibited liquid crystalline phases of type smectic A in a particular temperature region; there was no crystallization but there was vitrifying to form glassy mesogens during cooling from the isotropic melt. The effects of the linker chain length and terminal alkoxy chain on liquid crystals were studied. The liquid crystalline organogelator with TTF unit was first designed and synthesized. It was demonstrated that the gelators obtained from cyclohexane had a strong ability to adsorb the toxic dye Rhodamine B from water. This property of this series of compounds is considered to have potential utilization for the removal of toxic dye molecules from wastewater.

Abstract:As a new class of soft materials,smart gels have attracted much attention in recent years due to their unique stimuli responsive properties.Derived from a platform molecule 2,4-(3,4-dichloro) benzylidene methy-d-gluconate,two more compounds 3a and 3b were synthesized as novel Schiff-based gelators.The gelation behaviors of these compounds were studied in different solvents and the effects of mechanical force on these smart gelators were also investigated.It was shown that the gelation abilities of these compounds depended on the type of the solvents and the length of the alkyl chains of the gelators.The morphology of these gels were observed with atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) and showed three-dimensional fibrous network structure.More importantly,compound 3b,with a shorter alky chain,exhibited unique mechanochromic behaviors.This interesting phenomenon may due to the transformation of compound 3b between crystalline state and amorphous state,as indicated by the results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).
A Structure–gelation Ability Study in a Short Peptide-Based ‘super Hydrogelator’ System

Abstract:The development of small molecules that can efficiently gel water is of great interest for researchers in the field of self-assembly. We recently found that a short peptide-based molecule (Nap-GFFpY-OMe) could form hydrogels at a minimum gelation concentration of 0.01 wt% after enzymatic conversion, which was the most efficient small molecular hydrogelator reported up to now. In order to study the relationship between the chemical structure and the gelation ability for these short peptide-based gelators, we designed and synthesized a small library of compounds with similar chemical structures to Nap-GFFpY-OMe. They have different capping groups for the amine on glycine (G), different numbers of glycines, different numbers of phenylalanines (F), and different groups at the C-terminus of the peptides. Based on the results, we concluded that the compounds were 'super gelators' when their amine capping group was naphthalene, the number of G residues was odd (one and three), the number of F residues was two, and the C-terminus of the peptide was a methyl ester. We found that 10 compounds within the library could form hydrogels and the hydrogels were characterized by rheology, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity of all the precursors of the gelators were also evaluated by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and we found that three precursors possessed obviously bigger IC50 values than their corresponding minimum gelation concentrations (MGCs). This study not only suggests the potential applications of our gel system in biomedical fields, but also provides useful information for the molecular design of short peptide-based hydrogelators with excellent gelation abilities.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels exhibit potential applications in the areas of sensors, nanodevices, drug and catalyst carriers, and so on. To develop a novel organogel with a multiresponse, we designed a component molecule bearing a pyridyl group for metal coordination and an amide group for the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. A complex building block with a symmetrical structure was selectively constructed by the coordination of a silver cation to the organic component. The coordination existing in the complex and the hydrogen bonding existing between complexes were examined by IR, Raman, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The gel formation and phase transition were examined by viscosity and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The selection of metal ions for the formation of a gel has proved to be crucial as only the complex of a binary coordinated metal ion, Ag+, was found to form a gel structure. From the band shift of the L1 solution with different amounts of silver ion, the binding ratio of silver ion to L1 was estimated to be 1:2 and the calculated stability constant was 3.6 x 10(8) M-2. On the basis of the analysis of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results, we proposed a possible stacking structure of the complex in the fibrous aggregates. Of interest is that the organogel exhibits a 3-D network structure of a beltlike fiber composed of ordered lamellar arrangements of the coordinated complex and shows a rapid response to wide chemical stimulations such as anions I-, Br-, and Cl-, gases such as H2S and NH3, and a change of pH.
Glucose-Based Fluorescent Low-Molecular Mass Compounds: Creation Of Simple And Versatile Supramolecular Gelators

Abstract:Five novel glucose-based naphthalene derivatives with linkers containing hydrazine, ethylenediamine, 1,3-propanediamine, 1,4-butanediamine, and 1,6-hexanediamine, respectively (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) were designed and prepared. The gelation test revealed the following points: (1) within the 30 solvents tested, 1 gels water only: (2) in contrast, 2 gels not only water, but also 11 of the organic solvents tested, a typical "ambidextrous gelator": (3) 3, 4, and 5, however gel organic solvents only. and the numbers of solvents gelled arc 11, 11 and 13, respectively. Clearly, these compounds are effective low-molecular mass gelators. and show transitions from a low-molecular mass hydrogelator to an ambidextrous gelator and then to low-molecular mass organogelators with a slight increase in the length of the spacers. Interestingly, 5 is a super gelator to acetonitrile. or which the minimum gelation concentration is only 0.07%. w/v. The morphology, microstructure and molecular aggregation of the system strongly depend on the transition, as revealed by SEM, contact angle, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. and XRD measurements. More interestingly, an aggregation-induced enhanced emission was observed along with gelation. Furthermore, the system appeared its a supramolecular chiroptical switch in the sol gel process that is the chirality disappeared when the gel was heated to solution, whereas it reappeared when cooled to a gel.
