Abstract:In this paper we study the Hopf bifurcation for the Holling- Tanner model, a well-known predator-prey model in mathematical ecology. We show that for some parameter ranges, the Hopf bifurcation is subcritical and thus the system may have multiple limit cycles.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the bifurcation of a Holling-Tanner predator-prey model with strong Allee effect. We confirm that the degenerate equilibrium of system can be a cusp of codimension 2 or 3. As the values of parameters vary, we show that some bifurcations will appear in system. By calculating the Lyapunov number, the system undergoes a subcritical Hopf bifurcation, supercritical Hopf bifurcation or degenerate Hopf bifurcation. We show that there exists bistable phenomena and two limit cycles. By verifying the transversality condition, we also prove that the system undergoes a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 2 or 3. The main conclusions of this paper complement and improve the previous paper [30]. Moreover, numerical simulations are given to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we use a semi-discretization method to consider the predator–prey model of Leslie type with ratio-dependent simplified Holling type IV functional response. First, we discuss the existence and stability of the positive fixed point in total parameter space. Subsequently, through using the central manifold theorem and bifurcation theory, we obtain sufficient conditions for the flip bifurcation and Neimark–Sacker bifurcation of this system to occur. Finally, the numerical simulations illustrate the existence of Neimark–Sacker bifurcation and obtain some new dynamical phenomena of the system—the existence of a limit cycle. Corresponding biological meanings are also formulated.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce constant-yield prey harvesting into the Holling–Tanner model with generalist predator. We prove that the unique positive equilibrium is a cusp of codimension 4. As the parameter values change, the system exhibits degenerate Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension 4. Using the resultant elimination method, we show that the positive equilibrium is a weak focus of order 2, and the system undergoes degenerate Hopf bifurcation of codimension 2 and has two limit cycles. By numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the system exhibits homoclinic bifurcation and saddle–node bifurcation of limit cycles as the parameters are varied. The main results show that constant-yield prey harvesting and generalist predator can lead to complex dynamic behavior of the model.

Abstract:The Holling--Tanner model for predator-prey systems has two Hopf bifurcation points for certain parameters. The dependence of the environmental parameters on the underlying bifurcation structure is uncovered using two-timing. Emphasis is on how the bifurcation diagram changes as the Hopf bifurcation points separate. Two degenerate cases require a modification of conventional two-timing. When the two Hopf bifurcation points nearly coalesce, the two stable periodic solution branches are shown to be connected. As a ratio of linear growth rates varies, the Hopf bifurcation points separate further and one limit cycle becomes unstable. This situation can correspond to an outbreak in populations. The modified two-timing analysis analytically captures the unstable and stable limit cycles of the new branch.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a predator–prey mite model of Leslie type with generalized Holling IV functional response. The model is shown to have very rich bifurcation dynamics, including subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations, degenerate Hopf bifurcation, focus‐type and cusp‐type degenerate Bogdanov–Takens bifurcations of codimension 3, originating from a nilpotent focus or cusp of codimension 3 that acts as the organizing center for the bifurcation set. Coexistence of multiple steady states, multiple limit cycles, and homoclinic cycles is also found. Interestingly, the coexistence of two limit cycles is guaranteed by investigating generalized Hopf bifurcation and degenerate homoclinic bifurcation, and we also find that two generalized Hopf bifurcation points are connected by a saddle‐node bifurcation curve of limit cycles, which indicates the existence of global regime for two limit cycles. Our work extends some results in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a predator–prey system with the simplified Holling IV functional response and antipredator behavior such that the adult prey can attack vulnerable predators. The model has been investigated by Tang and Xiao, and the existence and stability of all possible equilibria are determined. In addition, they performed a bifurcation analysis and showed that the system undergoes a Codimension 2 Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation. In this paper, for the same model, we further show that the cusp‐type Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation can be of Codimension 3, which acts as an organizing center for the whole bifurcation set. In addition, we propose the existence of Hopf bifurcation of Codimension 2 and the coexistence of stable limit cycle and unstable limit cycle. In particular, we show that the antipredator behavior has great effect on the dynamics of the model, it may cause the predator population to extinct while the prey population will increase up to the carrying capacity. Numerical simulations including bifurcation diagrams and phase portraits are performed to illustrate and confirm the theoretical results. These results may enrich the dynamics of predator–prey systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the codimensions of Hopf bifurcation and Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of a predator–prey model with alternative prey and prey refuges, which was proposed by Chen et al. [ 2023 ]. The results show that the predator–prey model can undergo a supercritical Hopf bifurcation or a Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension two under certain parameter conditions. It means that there are some predator–prey models with an alternative prey and prey refuges which have a limit cycle or a homoclinic loop. Moreover, it is also shown that the codimension of Hopf bifurcation is at most one and codimension of Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation is at most two.

Abstract:In this work, an attempt is made to understand the dynamics of a modified Leslie–Gower model with nonlinear harvesting and Holling type-IV functional response. We study the model system using qualitative analysis, bifurcation theory and singular optimal control. We show that the interior equilibrium point is locally asymptotically stable and the system under goes a Hopf bifurcation with respect to the ratio of intrinsic growth of the predator and prey population as bifurcation parameter. The existence of bionomic equilibria is analyzed and the singular optimal control strategy is characterized using Pontryagin’s maximum principle. The existence of limit cycles appearing through local Hopf bifurcation and its stability is also examined and validated numerically by computing the first Lyapunov number. Optimal singular equilibrium points are obtained numerically for various discount rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a Leslie-type predator–prey model that incorporates prey harvesting and group defense, leading to a modified functional response. Our analysis focuses on the existence and stability of the system's equilibria, which are essential for the coexistence of predator and prey populations and the maintenance of ecological balance. We identify the maximum sustainable yield, a critical factor for achieving this balance. Through a thorough examination of positive equilibrium stability, we determine the conditions and initial values that promote the survival of both species. We delve into the system's dynamics by analyzing saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations, which are crucial for understanding the system transitions between various states. To evaluate the stability of the Hopf bifurcation, we calculate the first Lyapunov exponent and offer a quantitative assessment of the system's stability. Furthermore, we explore the Bogdanov–Takens (BT) bifurcation, a co-dimension 2 scenario, by employing a universal unfolding technique near the cusp point. This method simplifies the complex dynamics and reveals the conditions that trigger such bifurcations. To substantiate our theoretical findings, we conduct numerical simulations, which serve as a practical validation of the model predictions. These simulations not only confirm the theoretical results but also showcase the potential of the model for predicting real-world ecological scenarios. This in-depth analysis contributes to a nuanced understanding of the dynamics within predator–prey interactions and advances the field of ecological modeling.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the dynamical behavior of a two-species predator–prey model with Holling type IV functional response and nonlinear predator harvesting. The positivity and boundedness of the solutions of the model have been established. The considered system contains three kinds of equilibrium points. Those are the trivial equilibrium point, axial equilibrium point and the interior equilibrium points. The trivial equilibrium point is always saddle and stability of the axial equilibrium point depends on critical value of the conversion efficiency. The interior equilibrium point changes its stability through various parametric conditions. The considered system experiences different types of bifurcations such as Saddle-node bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation, Transcritical bifurcation and Bogdanov–Taken bifurcation. It is clear from the numerical analysis that the predator harvesting rate and the conversion efficiency play an important role in stability of the system.

Abstract:This work examines a discrete Leslie-Gower model of prey-predator dynamics with Holling type-IV functional response and harvesting effects. The study includes the existence and local stability analysis of all fixed points. Using center manifold theory, the codimension-1 bifurcations, viz. transcritical, Neimark–Sacker, fold, and period-doubling bifurcations, are determined for varying parameters. Moreover, the existence of codimension-2 Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation and Chenciner bifurcation is demonstrated, requiring two parameters to vary for the bifurcation to occur, and the non-degeneracy conditions for Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation are determined. An extensive numerical study is conducted to confirm the analytical findings. A wide range of dense, chaotic windows can be seen in the system, including period-2, 4, 8, and 16, period-doubling bifurcations, Neimark–Sacker bifurcations, and Chenciner and BT curves following two-parameters bifurcations. Further, it is also shown that the effect of harvesting parameter of the model for which the population dies out.

Abstract:We discuss the stability and bifurcation analysis for a predator-prey system with non-linear Michaelis-Menten prey harvesting. The existence and stability of possible equilibria are investigated. We provide rigorous mathematical proofs for the existence of Hopf and saddle node bifurcations. We prove that the system exhibits Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension two, calculating the normal form. We provide several numerical simulations to illustrate our theoretical findings.

Abstract:In this paper, the impact of the strong Allee effect and ratio-dependent Holling–Tanner functional response on the dynamical behaviors of a predator–prey system is investigated. First, the positivity and boundedness of solutions of the system are proved. Then, stability and bifurcation analysis on equilibria is provided, with explicit conditions obtained for Hopf bifurcation. Moreover, global dynamics of the system is discussed. In particular, the degenerate singular point at the origin is proved to be globally asymptotically stable under various conditions. Further, a detailed bifurcation analysis is presented to show that the system undergoes a codimension-[Formula: see text] Hopf bifurcation and a codimension-[Formula: see text] cusp Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation. Simulations are given to illustrate the theoretical predictions. The results obtained in this paper indicate that the strong Allee effect and proportional dependence coefficient have significant impact on the fundamental change of predator–prey dynamics and the species persistence.

Abstract:A strongly coupled predator–prey model in a spatially heterogeneous environment with a Holling type-II functional response and a nonlinear growth rate for the predator is considered. Using bifurcation theory and the Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction, we derived a bounded smooth curve formed by the positive solutions and obtained the structure of the bifurcation branches. We also proved that the bounded curve is monotone S-shaped or fish-hook-shaped (⊂-shaped), as the values of the parameters of the model vary; in the latter case, the model has multiple positive steady-state solutions caused by the spatial heterogeneity of the environment.

Abstract:A predator-prey model with predator-age structure and predator-prey reaction time delay τ1 is investigated. We consider the predator fertility function as a piecewise function related to predator development time τ2. Considering the complexity of the characteristic equation, we theoretically prove that a non-trivial periodic oscillation phenomena through Hopf bifurcation appears when parameter τ1=τ2:=τ passes through some critical values, by employing the integrated semigroup theory and Hopf bifurcation theory for semilinear equations with non-dense domain. We perform model calibration, data fitting and parameter estimation by utilizing real data, and analyze the rationality and deficiencies of our model. The corresponding theoretical results are certificated by numerical simulations. Additionally, when τ1 and τ2 take different values, we numerically analyze their influence on the model and conclude that the dynamic behavior of the system around the positive equilibrium changes between local asymptotic stability and sustained periodic oscillations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a diffusive Lotka–Volterra predator–prey system with spatial heterogeneity and two delays. We first show that there exists a nonconstant positive steady state when the diffusion rates of prey and predator are large. Then, we obtain the stability of the steady state and show the existence of a Hopf bifurcation. Moreover, some numerical simulations are provided to illustrate our theoretical results.

Abstract:A Leslie–Gower predator–prey model with nonlinear harvesting and a generalist predator is considered in this paper. It is shown that the degenerate positive equilibrium of the system is a cusp of codimension up to 4, and the system admits the cusp-type degenerate Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension 4. Moreover, the system has a weak focus of at least order 3 and can undergo degenerate Hopf bifurcation of codimension 3. We verify, through numerical simulations, that the system admits three different stable states, such as a stable fixed point and three limit cycles (the middle one is unstable), or two stable fixed points and two limit cycles. Our results reveal that nonlinear harvesting and a generalist predator can lead to richer dynamics and bifurcations (such as three limit cycles or tristability); specifically, harvesting can cause the extinction of prey, but a generalist predator provides some protection for the predator in the absence of prey.

Abstract:Abstract We study a fractional-order delayed predator-prey model with Holling–Tanner-type functional response. Mainly, by choosing the delay time $\tau $ as the bifurcation parameter, we show that Hopf bifurcation can occur as the delay time $\tau $ passes some critical values. The local stability of a positive equilibrium and the existence of the Hopf bifurcations are established, and numerical simulations for justifying the theoretical analysis are also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a Leslie–Gower predator–prey model with Allee effect on the prey and a linear functional response. Here the Allee effect impacts the birth rate of the prey, which is different from the common multiplicative and additive Allee effects. The model is well-posed, that is, all solutions are bounded. Applying the blow-up method indirectly, we prove that the origin which is not an equilibrium of the system is an attractor. Then we study the existence and stability of equilibria, which indicate that the system undergoes bifurcations. With the help of Sotomayor’s theorem, we show the occurrence of saddle-node bifurcation. Moreover, there is degenerate Hopf bifurcation of codimension at least three. By choosing two (three) parameters of the system as bifurcation parameters and calculating a versal unfolding near the cusp, we demonstrate that the system undergoes Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension two (three). These theoretical results are supported with numerical simulations.

Abstract:The slow–fast Leslie–Gower model with piecewise-smooth Holling type-I functional response and weak Allee effect is studied in this paper. It is shown that the model undergoes singular Hopf bifurcation and nonsmooth Hopf bifurcation as the parameters vary. The theoretical analysis implies that the predator’s food quality and Allee effect play an important role and lead to richer dynamical phenomena such as the globally stable equilibria, canard explosion phenomenon, a hyperbolically stable relaxation oscillation cycle enclosing almost two canard cycles with different stabilities and so on. Moreover, the predator and prey will coexist as multiple steady states or periodic oscillations for different positive initial populations and positive parameter values. Finally, we present some numerical simulations to illustrate the theoretical analysis such as the existence of one, two or three limit cycles.
