Abstract:Hierarchical Lignocellulosic fibres, whose surfaces were covered by cellulose microfibrils or their aggregates, were prepared from individual sisal fibre by microfibrillation. The influence of microfibrillation on the morphology, specific surface area, zero-span tensile strength was investigated and the mechanical properties of the fibre-reinforced composites were investigated. The tensile strength of the hierarchical fibre showed little difference when microfibrillation was limited to the first layer (Si) or the outer layer of S2 (secondary layer) of the fibre cell wall. However, the tensile strength of composites increased due to the improvement in fibre/phenolic resin interfacial adhesion and stronger interactions among fibres. Damage to the S2 layer led to deterioration in the tensile strength of the hierarchical sisal fibres and shorter fibre length, and thus the tensile strength of composites decreased.
